Between 2006 and 2015, my husband Steve and I, lived through all the above in one form or another, along with a host of other interesting experiences. It asks the question, Is the Grass Greener? Not only in regard to moving to another country, but in our newly formed relationship.

There are many reflective anecdotes, which provide background to the story. We make the leap from singing on the circuits of club land in the UK, to singing under the stars on a Maltese island only 3.5 miles square. We move away from the stresses of the rat race in England to a gentler, more peaceful way of life among the welcoming people of Gozo. We experience highs and lows as we adjust to our new life, making good friends along the way.

Through my writing my husband Steve shares his painful struggle with depression and I reflect on my unexpected role of carer. On a lighter note, you can read about many of the unique and often humorous experiences we had day to day which left us smiling and saying, “Only in Gozo”.
Gozo has seen a marked rise in visits from tourists, some more famous than others. The tiny bay of Mgarr Ix Xini, which was one of our favourite haunts, was, at the time of writing, used as a film set for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s latest movie. If you have never been to this jewel of an island, it is my sincere hope that in reading this book, you may decide to see it for yourself.

Freya Barrington is the pen name I use for writing my books. My debut novel, Known to Social Services, was the #1 social work book on Amazon UK.

Gozo Is the Grass Greener? Is my 2nd novel and is all about our experiences in moving from the UK to the small Mediterranean island of Gozo.

I grew up in Lancashire, England with an overriding passion for animals, specifically horses. After attending a girl’s grammar school, where English was my strongest subject, the only desire I held was to work with my beloved horses. To the dismay of my parents, I went to work in a racing yard.

Realising that this was not a passing phase, my parents eventually encouraged me in my chosen career and I went on to work with event horses, show jumpers and hunters, gaining several British Horse Society qualifications along the way – namely, the BHSAI, BHSII and BHSI (SM). All this enabled me to work as a riding instructress and trainer, which I did on a freelance basis. I continued working in the equestrian field for many years, eventually running my own yard.

A chance conversation with a friend, however, brought about a change of career and I moved away from my life with horses, into the unknown world of residential childcare. To my surprise, I found that I enjoyed this line of work and progressed to being a full-time foster carer for the local authority. It was during this time that I first put pen to paper in a creative way, writing poems about the children with whom I came into contact. A short book of poetry was published and the proceeds were used to raise money for a local youth group.

It was also during my time as a foster carer that I came into contact with social workers. Their dedication and expertise inspired me to train as a social worker, gaining the Diploma in Social Work in 2001 from the University of Derby with an award for excellence in practice. I also gained the Post-Qualifying Award in 2007. I am a registered member in good standing with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

In 2010, I moved with my husband, Steve, to the island of Gozo in the Maltese Islands. The move brought about the idea for my 2nd novel, Gozo Is the Grass Greener? When it comes to books about living in other countries, Gozo is seriously underrepresented and I have sought to address that with my new book, which provides readers with humour while also looking at some of life’s more serious questions and how they are lived out on that island.

While in Gozo, we made many lovely friends, both locals and ex pats. Our time on that island was a magical and special one. During our 4 years there, we worked as entertainers, singing in many of the local hotels and other venues. We loved the slower pace of life, the easy laid back day to day routine, the weather and the stunning scenery.

Steve and I now live in the South of France where I am continuing with my writing, but Gozo will always have a special place in our hearts.

If I have any spare time, I enjoy riding horses, singing, bird watching, listening to music, watching movies, walking and cooking. Oh, and I make all my own bread!
