Dutch Curridge by Tim Bryant

Dutch-Curridge-Behooven-Press-smallAbout Dutch Curridge by Tim Bryant:

Part TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and part UGETSU, Bryant’s DUTCH CURRIDGE examines the life of early 1950s Fort Worth from the bottom up.

Alvis Curridge is an ex-employee of the Fort Worth Sheriff’s Department. When he isn’t found at Peechie Keen’s Bar & Kanteen, drinking and swapping stories with buddies, he is busy trying to keep things in line around Cowtown. Even if that means occasionally tangling with his former boss.

In his spare time, he enjoys taking in the local music scene. He likes western swing and jazz music almost as much as he likes Ruthie Nell, the spunky writer for the Fort Worth Press.

Things are all going smoothly until Dutch– his friends all call him that, even if he isn’t thrilled about it– is contacted by an old friend to help locate her missing son.

Hard boiled crime and mystery meets good old fashioned ghost story as Dutch, who knows a great deal about the ways of the world, learns a little about himself and how he fits into the scheme of things.

Fly by Night

FLY-BY-NIGHT-CorrectedAbout Fly by Night:

Murder, mayhem, and a liberal dose of humor are part of this third Gracie Andersen mystery.

Environmental concerns ignite an ugly controversy in Gracie Andersen’s hometown. Add in the mysterious lights seen hovering in the night skies and it’s no wonder the folks of Deer Creek are on edge. Politicians and environmentalists, steeped in questionable motives, are converging and facing off in the small village. After violence erupts at a protest event, the local UFO fanatic discovers a body on his property. The killer can’t be an alien, but there are plenty of earthly suspects on kennel owner, Gracie Andersen’s list.

Haley, Gracie’s Labrador sniffs out some evidence that seems to lead to a dead end and Gracie’s annoying cousin unintentionally helps out in gathering up the suspect pool. What’s the real motive for murder? Is it politics? Money? Personal? Or all of the above?

Author Bio:
Growing up in rural Western New York where cows outnumber people fostered a love for the great outdoors and the magical world of books. A good book for me usually had a horse or a dog as the main character, or even better, a mystery to unravel. These books inspired writing my own tales of adventure in notebooks stashed under my bed.

Once marriage, raising two daughters, and a career in administration became priorities, writing faded into the distance. As a paralegal, administrative assistant, and manager, writing skills were honed on legal pleadings, policies, and all manner of business documents. Then an opportunity to finish my BS at Houghton College, NY came along in 1999. The research and term papers surprisingly got me excited about writing again.

Once our nest was empty, my husband, David and I left New York for sunnier skies and warmer weather in southeast Arizona. The high desert with its beautiful mountain views and independent spirit seemed to encourage risk taking. Since 2005, I’ve been writing for magazines and websites on a variety of topics. Throwing caution to the wind, the real fun began when the Gracie Andersen mystery series was conceived.

Gracie is a new kennel owner, attempting to reinvent herself after the death of her husband. She struggles socially and emotionally to find solid footing for her new life. Her hometown of Deer Creek is inhabited by some colorful characters who keep life interesting. Haley, Gracie’s Labrador supplies plenty of canine antics as the pair insert themselves into murder investigations and a few dangerous situations. Humor, a mystery, and a little romance are in each book.

Two other books were written in the midst of the Gracie series, a Christian novel following the lives of three estranged sisters, and a devotional book focused on gardening Scriptures.

Now that I’ve retired from the day job, more escapades with Gracie are planned, and a new suspense series which I hope to introduce soon.

I am a member of Sisters in Crime (national), Sisters in Crime – Tucson, Upper San Pedro Writers Group, and John 3:16 Author Network. I am a grateful recipient of two Poets and Writers grants. (2013 and 2015)

Her career paths have varied. She’s been a librarian, a classical clarinetist, recording studio engineer, broadcast electronics repairman, and now she architects software programs. Flexible Demons by Kevin Gorman

flexsAbout Flexible Demons by Kevin Gorman:

There are those of us who toil endlessly in obscurity for year upon year. Some will break out of their everyday doldrums and achieve a level of enormity reserved for a very special few. Still, others will fight until they have little left to offer. They strive on, convinced that the ride justifies their fate – however bleak. For Francis Kramer, the true cost of the chase may prove too much to handle.

While dealing with the steadfast ghosts of a troubled past, Kramer’s mind conspires to pull greatness from deep within the darker recesses of his soul. In the process, Frank soon finds that others have taken an interest in his work, however mysterious they may be.

A torturous, darkly humorous tale of mental anguish and the unyielding pull of addiction; the story tests the limits man will go to exercise the demons that may exist largely within our own hearts and subconscious minds.

My Trip to the A&P: A Timeless Tale by R. Andrew Johnson

zTXeXLRec1About My Trip to the A&P: A Timeless Tale by R. Andrew Johnson:

Some say were just organic beings who are born, live, and die. Or is there more to us than meets the eye? Could our lives go beyond the grave and the ashes we leave?

The thought that our journey goes beyond our earthly lives is one humans have considered since we first walked upon the Earth.

My novel, one man’s journey in life, considers this question and more. The venture begins when Mr. Ray John heads to the A&P in his classic Edsel to purchase some items at the grocery store for a family barbecue. Before leaving, he opens the car door and invites you to come, too. There, he meets an unusual being who offers him a train ticket that could lead to the journey of a lifetime. His instructions are to go to an abandon railroad depot and be there by 4:00 P.M. that day. He must decide to stay or go.

Author Bio:
The author of My Trip to the A&P: A Timeless Tale, R Andrew Johnson, is an earthly time traveler just like you. As he moves through his life, he seeks answers to why were here and what’s our purpose. His journey began with his birth in El Paso, Texas many years ago. There were numerous steps, stops, and changes in his life along the way. His dad was in the military and it felt like he had castors on his feet, but his family roots are in Pennsylvania.

By the time he reached the eighth grade, he decided he wanted to be a teacher. He wished to impact youth in a positive way to improve the human condition. Today, he still embraces these ideals, but in a more realistic way. He now, as an aspiring writer, wants to write compelling novels and essays to move people, despite their heartaches, mistakes, and challenges, by reaching their hearts and minds so they can embrace their self-worth and find a worthy path in life filled with justice, dignity, and hope.

Mr. Johnson’s journey reached an impactful crescendo when an African American missionary knocked on his door, identified himself, and asked for donations for an orphanage in Mexico; and one more thing, an umbrella in case it rained. Befuddled by his second request, but moved by his genuineness, Andrew gave him what little cash he had and began to search for an umbrella with the help of his five-year old daughter. With regret, he told him he couldn’t find an umbrella. The man thanked him, turned and left, and stopped at the patio door and looked over his shoulder to give him a special message.

It never rained that day, but the three words he left this writer changed his life and the course of the novel he was writing.

Today, the author lives in Southern California where some say it never rains and the sun always shines. He lives with his wife Marianne and cat Mindy, has two daughters, Lindsay and Katherine, and a grandson Zachary who’s an avid t-ball player and loves to fish.

Mr. Johnson is a retired teacher who earned a master’s degree and taught in the public schools for 24 years.

Epic Achievements Against Incredible Odds by Steve McCurdy

INCREDIBLE_ODDS_Gold_31About Epic Achievements Against Incredible Odds by Steve McCurdy:

This is the fascinating the story of how a few great Americans, between 1930 and 1952, overcame incredible challenges to build some of the world’s most remarkable architectural wonders.

Drawing upon his impressive knowledge of American history, the author chronicles the country’s emergence in the Roaring Twenties as the world’s pre-eminent builder of great dams, bridges, and skyscrapers. He skillfully combines little-known back stories with vintage photographs to show how America’s architects, engineers and contractors, working with arcane technologies and slide rules, used innovation, ingenuity, and inspiration to build some of the world’s most extraordinary structures faster and better than they have been built before or since.

Mr. McCurdy’s narrative includes:

• Hoover Dam

In the depths of the Great Depression, a man from Maine named Frank Crowe assembled a rag-tag army of 5,000 unemployed men in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Working in conditions that were sometimes brutal, without the benefit of modern technologies, Crowe and his men not only built the world’s greatest dam, but they finished it under budget two years ahead of schedule.

• The Golden Gate Bridge

In his account of the building of this celebrated bridge, McCurdy tells the little-known back story of Charles Ellis. Fired by a boss jealous of his engineering genius, Ellis worked tirelessly behind the scenes, without pay or acknowledgement, to write the bid specifications for every single component of the bridge. Although he is now regarded as the father of the bridge, Ellis received no recognition during his lifetime.

• The Empire State Building

Paul Starrett was an organizational genius, and is often referred to as the father of the American skyscraper. McCurdy tells the remarkable story of how, in 1931, Starrett built the Empire State Building from ribbon cutting to completion in the astonishing time of 391 days, a record which has never been challenged and which amazes structural engineers to this day.

• The Pentagon

Prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, 40,000 War Department personnel in Washington DC were spread out among 22 separate buildings. One man was given the task of bringing them all together under one roof. Less than eight months after he broke ground, Brehon Burke Somervell was moving employees into the world’s largest building, the 6.6 million square foot Pentagon.

• The SS United States

When he was eight years old, William Francis Gibbs began dreaming of building the world’s greatest ocean liner. Fifty-eight years later, on May 14, 1952, Gibbs guided his thousand foot long dream ship into open waters. With the greatest power to weight ratio ever achieved in any passenger vessel, the SS United States broke the transatlantic crossing speed record by 10 hours on her maiden voyage.

In the second half of Epic Achievements Against Incredible Odds, the author carefully traces the country’s post-war decline as the world’s great builder, and identifies and analyzes the causes of its slide. McCurdy ends his book with a frank and compelling assessment of how, when and whether, the United States will ever bounce back and re-establish its supremacy as the world’s master builder of architectural icons.
