Hi There! Cheri Jensen here, wife and mother, who raised two wonderful sons, and currently living on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada. The idea for Paintball came after the loss of my youngest son, Jason, who passed away at the age of 17, a few days after complications from a car accident in 2003.

A few months before the accident that took Jay away from us, he and I had been having breakfast at my home with his best friend, Daniel. I suddenly told the boys that if something ever happened to me that would cause MY passing, Jay was to go down to the local pet store that he and I would go to often, where we played with the animals and birds. I said I believed in a continuance after death, of some sort, and that I would try and come back as a parrot (talking ability of course!) and that Jay could come find me and bring me home, to continue our life and adventures together.

Well, both of them laughed hysterically! I think I caught Jay in mid gulp of his glass of milk, which spurted back out thru his nose, he was laughing so hard. I was serious and these guys thought I was nuts! I told Jay the code word to know it was me at the pet store was “Paintball”, as we both had enjoyed the game together on the weekends for years. “Mother and Son war-games with paint…..gotta love it!”

As fate would have it, we lost him a few months after that breakfast conversation. In the natural order of things, it should have been me. However, as many of us know, life is not fair, and these things happen.

So, in the last few years, I began tossing about the idea of bringing my original thought to life, in a wonderful attempt to keep his memory and our life together, alive. Hence, Paintball, the feisty little parrot that is the reincarnation of me, and what would have happened, if I had gone before him.
I hope you enjoy the adventures of Jay and Paintball, as much as I enjoy writing them in his memory!

As Toby Noonan prepares to throw his first pitch at Bo Zaweski, he taunts , “I’ll take it easy on you, grandpa.”

After all, Noonan figures, the batter is an old geezer. Easy out.

Big mistake.

This 67-year–old geezer is the hottest hitter in the amateur league, with a special fondness for home runs. In short order Bo blasts the ball over the park fence, 350 feet away. And that’s just the beginning of a bad afternoon for Noonan’s team. In the end, Bo and his team trounce them 17 to 3.

He is the best hitter Noonan ever saw. He tells the slugger he could be famous playing professional ball for the city’s double-A team.

He has a bad knee, Bo says to Noonan, and no pro team is going to hire a geezer, anyway. As for fame, Bo says, “I never in my life wanted to be famous, so don’t get all upset if I tell you I think your idea is pure crap.”

Noonan won’t give up, and talks Bo into demonstrating his batting talents for C.B. Dollenberg, tight-fisted owner of the team as well as the local baseball stadium. It’s just for a lark, Noonan insists.

Impressed by Bo’s mind-blowing batting performance, Dollenberg offers him a place on the team at a miserly salary, on the condition that his batting average stays over .350. Desperate to fill empty seats in his ballpark, Dollenberg believes having a geezer who’s a first-rate slugger on his failing team will draw more fans to the games.

Noonan persuades Dollenberg to pay Bo a $25,000 bonus if he can break the batting average record of baseball legend Ted Williams, who batted .406 for the Red Sox in 1941. Dollenberg is certain no old geezer can have a better season than Williams in his prime, and doubles the bonus offer to $50,000, knowing he’ll never have to pay it.

Manipulated by Noonan, Bo impulsively leaves his job of 33 years, and signs on with Dollenberg, for the life of a minor league baseball player. It’s a wild season of cheering fans, home runs, and knee troubles, as Bo chases the batting average that makes him famous — and just might win him the impossible $50,000.
