I lived in Polynesia for almost a decade so I know the sea really is purple and the dancing really is joyous. I know too that hurricanes visit regularly and sometimes cause utter devastation and villagers come together to rebuild for everyone. Polynesians are remarkably generous and expect similar generosity from visitors – not so easy if a villager wants to share a precious family ring!
During the years I was in Polynesia I became more and more intrigued about what it was like for those few 1800’s traders and missionaries who decided to keep their children with them rather than send them back to school. This theme is present in nearly all my Southern Seas Series. Ro my own observations I’ve added stories I was told and stories I made up.
Whether true or false it was clear that the clash of cultures would have been enormous, especially when the “visitor” was so very far from home.
