Dorothy was right. There’s no place like home. 8. All of the numerous bottles in my shower must be lined up with their labels facing out. It makes me feel a little like Julia Roberts’ mean husband from the movie ‘Sleeping with the Enemy,’ but I can’t seem to control this particular quirk. 9. I love, love, love finding a great bargain. 10. Did I mention that I hate whipped cream? It makes my stomach churn to look at it, touch it, smell it, or even think about it. Let me tell you a little about my life beginning in my early years of childhood. From the start, I was the baby of six children and I weighed a whopping 11 pounds and 12 ounces at birth. When I was growing up I would forever hear my siblings say how Mommy gave birth to a baby elephant. Although they would say it with the intent of me being cute, my mind would capture the impression of a baby elephant. The image I carried of myself was too much to bear.

Back then there was very little talk about eating the right portions and there was very little information about the dangers of fast food and poor diets.

So carrying extra weight was pretty much normal to me. I remember being at school and most of the time I was quiet and kept to myself. One of the ways I found to express my feelings was through my love for art. I loved drawing and painting cartoon characters for my baby nephews and nieces when taking care of them.

It was there I found peace and protection from being bullied from kids in the outside world. When I would look at the finished piece of art on their walls, they would make me feel happy and good about myself.

In elementary school I was constantly being laughed at as my weight just kept getting higher as I grew older. Looking at myself in the mirror became more of a practice to me as boys grew more noticeable. At age 11 clothes shopping was extremely embarrass-ing because finding clothes to fit a 4’8″ youngster weighing 180 pounds was nearly impossible. Mom had to buy size 20 in adult clothes and then alter them on a sewing machine to shorten the length.

One thing I loved about school was art class. I could be off in my own little corner creating from feelings I would bury. I was so deeply sad and embarrassed when at school I wouldn’t eat lunch and went home starving at the end of the day. I was carrying so much pain that in the midst of opening the refrigerator door I would burst out crying and fall to the kitchen floor. My Mom found me crying several times and would ask me what was wrong. When I would tell her, not knowing what to do to help me, she would just say, “Well if you’re hungry, eat”. I was feeling so lost, confused and embarrassed. I just felt like ending my life.

I was very shy in public and had difficulty making eye contact. It was common for me to hear shouts of ridicule, like, “Mama Cass, and “Hey Tiny”, when walking down the sidewalk. To shake off some of the pain, I would make jokes about myself to my friends so I could laugh with them. As my problem grew more serious Mom realized I needed help.

My Mom took me to an Over Eaters Anonymous meeting to see if that would help. I was willing to find out what it was all about, so I went with her.

I remember walking into the room of a large group of adults perhaps 50 or more. For a brief second I felt like this was going to be very weird….
