Author Bio:
Hi, I am Jyotsna, the HomeEntrepreneur™ (stay-at-home mom + entrepreneur). My journey towards freedom began when I decided never to be an employee ever again. I tried out various businesses to support my decision- started a staff recruitment agency, became a franchisee of a chocolate brand, did freelance web designing, etc. The arrival of my daughter Advika was the turning point in my life. I realized during my maternity break that none of my businesses were generating income if I was not actively working. I was actually self-employed, I was not a business owner. I had not built in the right systems to automate my businesses. I understood that in order to enjoy true freedom I needed to create passive income streams. The best way to do that was to start online businesses. I now run a book publishing company called Awesome Life Resources and coach people on how they too can convert their passion into an online business. Through my books and blog I share all the tools and strategies that have helped me transform myself from an employee to an entrepreneur, which I’m sure will help you too.

Yaakwdaat Aya, This is Yakutat

2014_1224Italio0006About Yaakwdaat Aya, This is Yakutat:

Bertrand J. Adams Sr., who writes under his Tlingit name, Kadashan, offers one of the first and few glimpses into the daily lives of the Tlingit Indians. His stories describe the Tlingit as they live today in Southeastern Alaska. The Tlingit have been in contact with Westerners for over 250 years. The pervasive thinking is that they have completely abandoned their traditional culture and values in favor of western ways. While his writings were not specifically designed to counter this popular supposition, Kadashan successfully describes, in a simple manner, the ways in which the Tlingit have incorporated traditional beliefs and values into their daily lives.
He shows his greatest strength when he writes of the common, ordinary events in village life. A trip to the store is filled with the subtle nuances and thoughts of individuals reared in both the Tlingit and western cultures. Hunting and fishing trips illustrate the challenges facing the participants as well as the simple pleasures of these ventures. Additionally, Kadashan aptly reveals the knowledge villagers possess of their environment. The author also deals with the conflicts and tensions faced by Tlingit youth whose world is challenged by new ways. In this collection, the author also offers his own thinking of the institutions which act as a buffer between the Tlingit and Western societies and on the laws that impact Tlingit culture.
Kadashan’s stories reveal an intimate knowledge as well as love of village life. His enthusiasm carries over to readers. When his stories were first published in the Alaska Native Magazine, they were instantly popular. This collection should receive the same warm welcome.

Author Bio:
Even though he might have a smidgen of Swedish in him, Kadashan is a Tlingit Indian to the core.
He is my father.
Even though he now lives in Yakutat, Kadashan has roots that come from other parts of Southeast Alaska as well, particularly from Sitka and Wrangell. His grandmother, Elizabeth Kadashan, who married a man from Sitka, named him after her father, John Kadashan, whose roots comes from Wrangell. It was he and another young man by the name of Sitka Charlie with their leader Toyotta who guided John Muir through the inside passage of Southeast Alaska into Glacier Bay. Of course historians know that Muir is credited for discovering Glacier Bay, but when my father tells the story he always concludes by saying, “Now you know who took him there.”
He was born in Sitka. That’s where his mother, Stella Johnson, met his father, John J. James, while they were attending Sheldon Jackson Boarding School. After his mother graduated from high school in 1936 they eloped.
She actually had lofty goals for herself. She wanted to be the first Alaskan Native women doctor. However they did not plan on having any children until after this all happened. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class, and had a scholarship to attend Gonzaga University. Even after he was born this did not discourage her from going for her dreams. It was when he was six months old that his father drowned in a hunting accident. About a year later she remarried, however the marriage did not last. About a year later his mother moved to her home town of Yakutat. Here she married his step father, John J. Adams.
The name Kadashan was given to him by his paternal grandmother. She named him after her father, John Kadashan who, later in his life, was the chief of a Kiksadi group from Wrangell. Kadashan means man the elder.
Kadashan’s first formal education was received in Yakutat. His high school years were split between Holland High School in Holland, Michigan, and Mount Edgecumbe High School, a boarding school established by the federal government for Native Alaskans near Sitka. His undergraduate work was obtained from Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, and later at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
As a youngster Kadashan learned from a Tlingit Indian friend, Peter Harry, how to express himself with oil colors. From that point on he taught himself how to be an artist. “He started me with oils,” he explains. “When I was in high school I started experimenting with water colors.” His short stories have been published in the Alaska Native Magazine (ANM) and the Horizons Magazine. The ANM has used his water colors to illustrate his stories. The second printing of these stories, printed by Xlibris, is reproductions in black and white of his water and acrylic paintings. He has also written for the Alaska Magazine and the Alaskan Southeaster Magazine and for about six years wrote a monthly column for the Juneau Empire, the major newspaper for the Capital City of Alaska.
His stories are local color. He takes a slice of life from the lifestyle, culture, history and tradition of the Tlingit people from his community, and attempts to develop a plot which will keep the interest of the reader. To inform and entertain are the objectives for his writings, however, particularly about the culture, history and tradition of his people, the Tlingit Indians of Yakutat.
He is a retired commercial fisherman by thereby has more time write more stories, and is presently working on two novels. Needless to say, there is a wealth of information and things to write about in Yakutat, however, he intends to expand his interest eventually to all parts of this great state of Alaska.
The poem in the beginning of this book was written by his mother when she was a teenager attending Sheldon Jackson Boarding School. She wrote many poems during those years but this one, with three others, was found after her death. He remembers vividly how she used to recite some of her poems to him and his brother, Walter. She never, however, made attempts to write any poems since she graduated from high school. Kadashan’s mother passed away in May of 1989. She was 73 years old. This poem was found among her possessions. It was scribbled in a small note book. The Alaska State Flower was made into a post card a year before she died.
The first printing of This Is Yakutat was self-published in 1992. The second printing has four new stories added to the collection, Pinch Me, In Between Season, Lifeblood and Toby.
There are a few things Kadashan learned while trying to become a writer he wishes young aspiring writers to understand.
Number one is to read a lot. Read everything so you can overflow the filing cabinet of your mind with a variety of information.
Second is to read creatively. A writer deliberately leaves things out of his work so the reader can fill in the blanks.
Thirdly (this goes along with reading creatively but needs to be said) learn to get more out of a book than what is really in it.
Finally, all writers look for truth. It is through the process of reading a lot, reading creatively, and getting more out of a book than is really in it that writers come to an understanding of what truth might be. Once he or she discovers truth then they have an obligation to share it with the world. Kadashan is no exception.
In fact my father takes this obligation very seriously.

Warrior Patient: A Memoir About Survival, Hope, Love & Laughter by Temple Emmet Williams

BookCoverRevise02aAbout Warrior Patient: A Memoir About Survival, Hope, Love & Laughter by Temple Emmet Williams:

“Warrior Patient” is about a person who uses laughter, love, good doctors and guts to completely recover from cancer, kidney failure, dialysis, deadly infections, partial blindness, shingles, large open wounds, a hernia and a little amputation. It takes almost three years to accomplish, but the patient now plays tennis seven days a week (weather permitting), walks, bikes and works out in the gym. Almost miraculously, he is “back to normal.” He laughs a lot. How did he do it?

* * * * * * * * * *

The world we live in has the best doctors and the most advanced medical system that our civilization has ever known.

Yet 100,000 patients die and nine million suffer injury every year. If medical mistakes were a disease, it would be the sixth leading cause of deaths in America.

In this extraordinary age of medical miracles, patients continue to sink into the quicksand of “going to the hospital.” Who has not heard about someone who checked into a facility for “normal” surgery … leading to their death?

A cartoon makes a joke out of it. It shows a doctor in a laboratory, surrounded by white lab rats. “We don’t need better medicine,” he announces to his colleagues, “we need stronger lab rats.”

As you read Warrior Patient you become one of the nine million who suffer injury every year. You take an extraordinary, often amusing journey into the quicksand of modern medicine. In the midst of a long list of life-threatening illnesses, you learn to laugh and you learn how to become a much stronger lab rat, a “Warrior Patient.”

You take advantage of America’s modern medical system. You are not taken advantage of by that system.

The story unfolds with humor and anecdotes that capture characters, times and places, from good doctors to bad ones, from childhood to old age, from Africa to Sweden. In the end, you completely recover. You live again. You have a life.

Enjoy the trip.

THE BOOK HAS BEEN WELL REVIEWED. HERE’S ONE, THE Kirkus Reviews:

In his humorous debut memoir, Williams envisions his shambolic prostate cancer saga as the education of a “medical dope” into “healthy hope.”

A Pulitzer Prize–nominated journalist and editor based in Boca Raton, Florida, Williams embarked on an unwelcome medical odyssey after a biopsy revealed he had prostate cancer. Unfortunately, that was just the beginning of a three-year comedy of errors

The radical robotic prostatectomy went well, but it was followed by hernias, MRSA, kidney failure, shingles, and eye troubles. Doctors failed him with a “prescription fiasco” and a canceled surgery. This might all have made for an overwhelmingly depressing litany of suffering were it not for Williams’ winning second-person, present-tense narration.

By recounting his journey like a set of instructions to a hapless new patient, he involves readers on an intimate level and gains wry perspective on his own circumstances. Along the way, he gives readable accounts of bodily processes and treatment history, such as a description of early dialysis.

In one memorable chapter, he also recalls four previous occasions when he faced down death ….

“Humor is the best doctor you will ever know,” Williams insists, and he follows his own advice by finding the funny side of every situation. That doctor who caused a prescription snafu—which gave Williams blisters all over his groin and legs—attended “the 10,623rd best medical school in the world.”

Even catheterization and erectile dysfunction offer a few laughs …. There are serious warnings here, too, often delivered in short “Warrior Patient rule” aphorisms at the end of each chapter. For instance, “If you need help, get it. Bravery is for dead people.”

Equally sardonic and informative—definitely not your average cancer memoir. — Kirkus Reviews
