Your Child, Your Mirror: A Book For Brave Parents

your-child-your-mirrorAbout Your Child, Your Mirror: A Book For Brave Parents:

Parents project onto our children our own expectations of life, our frustrations, our stages of childhood or adolescence where we left unresolved conflicts, and our own unmet needs, unconsciously hoping that they become an extension of us same and close our unfinished business. Behind most of the problems between parents and children is the shadow of those unconscious projections and while we do not see. The realization helps transform feelings of rejection, anger and consequent guilt, which can be devastating, facilitating the transition to the only feeling healthy, unites and transforms: love.

In the first eleven of the twelve chapters that make up this book , I discuss each of the different facets of these projections, supporting with cases that clarify the above.

In the last chapter I propose alternatives and tools that will serve as a guide for everyone to start their own exploration and its own change process , if you choose to. We live in a world with many problems and substance of them there is a huge lack of love. If you want to contribute something important to society, let us offer beloved children, we will be offering honest, productive happy people.

Meet the family who, over the course of forty-four charming stories, will warm your heart and leave you laughing out loud.
In his joyful debut A Walk Back Home, award winning artist Gil Garcia writes of his early life as seen through the eyes of a child growing up in his 1940s south central Los Angeles neighborhood.
Gil’s parents, his warring brothers, two sisters, a Dutch priest, and a English Sheep dog make up the cast characters in this entertaining collection. It’s Gil’s parents’ love for one another that shields this family through tragedy and the hardest of times. Memories fade, then blend into the next, and a delightful narrative begins to emerge that reminds the audiences of exuberance of youth. So descriptively and beautifully written, if put to canvas they would rival a Norman Rockwell painting.

The Law of Nature and Nature;s God

Natures-Law-CoverAbout The Law of Nature and Nature;s God:

I began writing for the Juneau Empire newspaper because I became very much concerned about the way our governments were drifting from the fundamental principles the Founding Fathers of this great nation had established for us. Even though the paper, in my opinion, is somewhat liberal, the Managing Editor thought I had something to offer—especially since I was Alaska Native. I had studied the U.S. Constitution when I was at Brigham Young University and was heavily involved in Alaska Native politics from 1993-2006. In my writings, I emphasized that “Native Americans,” and all Americans for that matter, should be concerned with modern day political issues. After all we are Americans and live under the banner of the U.S. Constitution—the very instrument that was designed to protect us from the injustices of government. These commentaries arose from my writings in a monthly column called Kadashan’s Corner that I wrote for the Empire, The Tundra Times, a website called Free of State and other periodicals

Author Bio:
Kadashan was born in Sitka, Alaska. His grandmother named him after her father, John Kadashan. The elder Kadashan was known by historians as Chief Kadashan, however in his later years he was regarded as a “peace-maker.” When he was only six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. His mother decided to move back to her hometown of Yakutat, where she married his step-father. After his elementary school years in Yakutat he went “outside” to Holland High School in Holland Michigan and later to Mount Edgecumbe Boarding School near Sitka in Alaska. Kadashan did not start looking into writing before attending a creative writing class at Sheldon Jackson College. And even then, it wasn’t until during his time at Brigham Young that he learned the real discipline of writing. In 1992 he self-published a collection of short stories. For six years he worked as a columnist for the Juneau Empire and statewide Native newspaper, the Tundra Times.

He learned a lot about tribal issues when he worked as the Tribal President of the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe. He drew from his experiences to write about politics for the Empire.

Kadashan is a contemporary author who draws his inspiration from the oral traditions of his Tlingit people. Of course, because of his Tlingit heritage, he is strongly influenced by traditional oral narratives, which stem from his education at Sheldon Jackson College and Brigham Young University, his work also reflects influences from Western Culture. Kadashan should not be regarded as an author torn between two poles, but rather as a mediator and like his great grandfather Kadashan is, through his writings, a “peace maker”.

Yaakwdaat Aya, /This is Yakutat

DSCF2717About Yaakwdaat Aya, /This is Yakutat:

Bertrand J. Adams Sr., who writes under his Tlingit name, Kadashan, offers one of the first and few glimpses into the daily lives of the Tlingit Indians. His stories describe the Tlingit as they live today in Southeastern Alaska. The Tlingit have been in contact with Westerners for over 250 years. The pervasive thinking is that they have completely abandoned their traditional culture and values in favor of western ways. While his writings were not specifically designed to counter this popular supposition, Kadashan successfully describes, in a simple manner, the ways in which the Tlingit have incorporated traditional beliefs and values into their daily lives.

He shows his greatest strength when he writes of the common, ordinary events in village life. A trip to the store is filled with the subtle nuances and thoughts of individuals reared in both the Tlingit and western cultures. Hunting and fishing trips illustrate the challenges facing the participants as well as the simple pleasures of these ventures. Additionally, Kadashan aptly reveals the knowledge villagers possess of their environment. The author also deals with the conflicts and tensions faced by Tlingit youth whose world is challenged by new ways. In this collection, the author also offers his own thinking of the institutions which act as a buffer between the Tlingit and Western societies and on the laws that impact Tlingit culture.

Kadashan’s stories reveal an intimate knowledge as well as love of village life. His enthusiasm carries over to readers. When his stories were first published in the Alaska Native Magazine, they were instantly popular. This collection should receive the same warm welcome.

Even though he might have a smidgen of Swedish in him my father, Kadashan, is a Tlingit Indian to the core.

Even though he now lives in Yakutat, Kadashan has roots that come from Sitka and Wrangell. His grandmother named him after her father, John Kadashan, from Wrangell. He was born in Sitka. That’s where his mother met his father while they were attending Sheldon Jackson Boarding School.

When he was six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. About a year later she remarried, however the marriage did not last; it was through this union that I was born. About a year later, his mother moved to Yakutat. Here she married our step-father.

The name Kadashan was given to him by his paternal grandmother. She named him after her father, John Kadashan, who later in his life, was a clan chief from Wrangell. Kadashan means “red tide coming.”

Kadashan’s formal education was received in Yakutat. His high school years were split between Holland High School in Holland, Michigan, and Mount Edgecumbe High School, a boarding school for Native Alaskans near Sitka. His undergraduate work was obtained from Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, and later at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

As a youngster Kadashan learned from a Tlingit Indian friend, Peter Harry, how to express himself with oil colors. “He started me with oils,” he explains. “When I was in high school I started water colors.” His short stories have been published in the Alaska Native Magazine (ANM) and the Horizons Magazine. The ANM has used his water colors to illustrate his stories. The second printing of these stories are reproductions in black and white of his paintings. He has also written for the Alaska Magazine and the Alaskan Southeaster Magazine, and for about six years wrote a monthly column for the Juneau Empire.

His stories are local color. He takes a slice of life from the lifestyle, culture, history and tradition of the Tlingit people from his community, develops a plot and composites of characters from the village. To inform and entertain are the objectives for his writings and about the Tlingit Indians of Yakutat.

He is a retired commercial fisherman and is presently working on more books.

The poem in the beginning of this book was written by our mother when she was a teenager. She wrote many poems during those years. This poem, along with three others, was found among her possessions after her death; they were scribbled in a small, faded, note book.

The first printing of This Is Yakutat was published in 1992.

There are a few things Kadashan learned while trying to become a writer:

Number one is to read a lot. Read everything so you can overflow the filing cabinet of your mind with a myriad of information.

Second is to read creatively. He believes a writer deliberately leaves things out of his work so the reader can fill in the blanks.

Third, learn to get more out of a book than what is really in it.

Finally, all writers look for truth. It is through the process of reading a lot, reading creatively, and getting more out of a book than is really in it that writers come to an understanding of what truth might be. Once he or she discovers truth then, he believes, they have an obligation to share it with the world.

My father is no exception.

Jewish Identity: A psychological study using Jewish sources

Jewish-IdentityAbout Jewish Identity: A psychological study using Jewish sources:

Jewish identity can be seen using the imagery of a three level structure: bottom, middle, and top. The psychodynamic school of psychology focused on the bottom level of the human soul through the “light” of instincts, impulses, and passions; the cognitive school focused on the middle level through the light of the intellect, consciousness, and thinking; and the top level with the upper light – the spiritualmoral dimension, on which this book focuses. The power of this light will enlighten the other levels and the entire structure. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to identify the unique components of Jewish identity, those that form the top level – the spiritual realm – in the new structure, and to highlight a different aspect of this identity, in addition to the faces illuminated by the classical theories.

This is a very fine book which elucidates basic theoretical concepts as well as practical issues. The author, professor Rafi Vaaknin has done a superb job in synthesizing Judaic principals and psychological knowledge. He uses his knowledge and understanding in creative ways which constitutes a major contribution to psychology and education. Professor Aharon Rabinowitz, Bar Ilan University

This book provides a significant contribution to contemporary Jewish education, clearly and scientifically presenting its main objectives and goals, while establishing an impeccable psychological basis. The book discusses the stages of human development from the “maternal experience” to the completion of adolescence, exploring the dimensions of Jewish identity by reviewing the various approaches prevalent today, while emphasizing parents’ responsibility in forming their children’s identity.

“If we get 400 followers, John Hobson will solve that nasty wolf-murder case for free! Fight the thing himself if he has to! #HobsonVsWolf!”

Angelina Choi was only trying to drum up some Twitter followers and make a good impression on her first day interning at John Hobson’s one-man detective agency.

But the campaign went viral and now they have a murder to solve, no money coming in, and an unwilling Hobson faced with battling some enormous beast.

With both follower and body counts rising, can they crack the case without offending everyone or being eaten by a huge dog?
