SJ Davis is the daughter of an ex-patriate British mother and a Southern Baptist ex-CIA father. As a child, she spoke in silly accents and recounted outlandish tales of fantasy over afternoon tea and to this day it remains her favorite activity. Born in Long Island, NY, she was raised in the suburbs of Washington DC and went to school for a very long time (University of Virginia and George Mason University), married an all-around wonderful man, had two kids (smart, funny, full of opinions), moved from Virginia to New Jersey to Philadelphia to Chicago to Detroit, and began her writing career. Jessie’s journey began in Sway and Compass. As we continue to follow her in Destiny, she stumbles across a revelation that could change everything and finds herself standing on the precipice of life.
From the very beginning we watch Jessie as she tries to find her place in the community. She does a lot of soul searching, trying to find ways to fit into a society that has trouble accepting her. In Sway, we begin to see her change and make interesting decisions based on what happens to her. Gradually, her path in life begins to shift and goes towards a new direction in Compass. She becomes more aware of who she is as a young person. My parents took me to see The Empire Strikes Back when I was four. I believe that profound experience started all this. I still remember the Hoth battle, the way my young mind saw it then, and that ending. The power of it. Does a story get any better than that? Since then filmmakers and authors have given me such intense, exciting, wonderful escapes from reality that I was compelled to create my own worlds and hope to do for others what has been done for me. For a long time I wanted to make movies. I graduated from the Los Angeles Film School with a major in directing and it was there that I honed my storytelling. After a few of life’s speed bumps, I decided to turn my short story and movie ideas into fiction. What I write doesn’t require a 100 million dollar budget, only my time, and I get to do what I love: create a story from beginning to end, anticipate when it’s published, and then receive feedback from those who have read it. I mostly write novellas and I think it’s a result of reading experiences where I found a great book within a bloated and overwritten one. That’s not what I do, I write brisk, lean and mean stories that can be quite dark in tone. I learned long ago that the only way for me to be at my best was to not hold back, like many I admire.
