The Fine Art of Holding Your Breath

Fine-Art_blueAbout The Fine Art of Holding Your Breath:

Secrets–like war–have their own casualties

MacKenna’s mother died when she was a baby, a casualty of the first Gulf War. Now seventeen, MacKenna has spent her life navigating the minefield of her dad’s moods, certain of one thing: she is destined to follow in her mother’s combat boots. But when she pursues an ROTC scholarship, she finds herself at war before even enlisting.

Her father forbids her from joining the military, inexplicable considering he’d raised her to be a “warrior princess.” MacKenna turns to her grandmother–who arms her with an ammo crate containing her mother’s personal effects from the war. Hidden in the crate’s false bottom is a journal, one her mom stashed there hours before her death.

While MacKenna untangles the secrets of her parents’ tragic love story, her own life unravels. Dad’s behavior becomes erratic, her best friend grows distant and even hostile, and a boy from her past returns–with a life-threatening secret of his own.

If ever a girl needed her mother, it’s now.

The pen might be mightier than the sword, but are a mother’s words strong enough to slice through years of hidden pain? Can those words reach through the battlefields of the past to change MacKenna’s future?

Well, what can I say, I write fiction sometimes

but I cant say all of my fiction is really fiction

I leave a little bit of myself in the stories I write

I tell about stuff that’s happened to me in the tales I tell

sometimes the fiction is a more accurate depiction

of life then if I say I did this or that over the course of my life.

Andrew Murray Destined to Serve: A biographical Novel by Olea Nel

Andrew-Murray-Cover-150About Andrew Murray Destined to Serve: A biographical Novel by Olea Nel:

For lovers of historical fiction about Christian heroes of the faith

A boyish and fun-loving Andrew Murray arrives back in South Africa after being ordained at the Hague on his twentieth birthday. He soon discovers that his preaching lacks the power displayed by his heroes of the faith. He therefore decides to embark on a quest to become a powerful preacher filled with the Holy Spirit.

But not long after his appointment as pastor to the Dutch emigrants beyond the borders of the Cape, he finds that he is being shunted off course by a frenetic round of preaching tours that sap his energy and leave him little time to spend with God. He also finds himself having to cope with an overly demanding church council, as well as walk a tightrope between the Boer farmers and the British Settler community who are bent on land speculation to the detriment of neighboring tribes.

Feeling overwhelmed by the task, and knowing that he was pressed into taking it, he starts to doubt his calling. It does not take him long to realize that he has to either man-up or bow out.

Historically accurate, and based upon Andrew Murray’s letters and early biographies, this is a compelling story that makes well-known historical characters come to life.

WALK with Andrew Murray as he negotiates his first year of ministry to the Voortrekkers in the Orange River Sovereignty and the Transvaal between the years 1849 and 1850.

PLACE yourself with him in the wilds of Africa teaming with game, lions and African wolves.

THROW into this mix the British, who at the Battle of Boomplaats in 1848 have just taken over the land between the Orange and Vaal Rivers.

IMMERSE yourself in a world where the Boer is forever ready to rebel against their British overlords, and where Paramount Chief Moshesh of the Basuto is constantly threatening war against the British and neighboring tribes.

OBSERVE how Andrew Murray at twenty-one is able to straddle the divide between Boer and Brit and grow into his role as lone pastor, eager to serve his far-flung congregation of over 20 000 souls.

Will be $1.99 between 28 and 30 January

Pulse by Robert Cook

front-coverAbout Pulse by Robert Cook:

Pulse is the third in the cooch series of national security thrillers.

Iran has completed its first nuclear weapon and plans to attack Israel soon with it. The United States is considering a surprise, massive attack against Iran to keep it from destroying Israel and thus destabilizing the Middle East.

Alex Cuchulain (COOCH) is a key human element in the US strategic plan. Cooch is a legendary former CIA commando and now an Oxford trained Islamic scholar, well accepted in Islamic scholarly circles. He is a Sunni Muslim living in Tangier and the owner, through inheritance, of a large and powerful Middle Eastern trading organization.

Cooch and his team of five are tasked by the President to consider how gain the trust of Iran, following a US pre-emptive attack on them. Cooch is to convince Iran of the futility of resisting further attack.

The female protagonist, Dr. CAITLIN O’CONNOR has developed a computerized intelligence product named Emilie. It predicted completion of the Iranian nuke while operating under contract to the National Security Agency. O’Connor is a CalTech trained physicist who won a MacArthur fellowship at age twenty three. She has been developing Emilie since then, largely on the government’s dollar. Emilie is formidable, as is her author. O’Connor claims to be the smartest person in the room– any room.

Cooch’s team meets with the President at Camp David to discuss the Iran situation. The President questions Emilie’s accuracy concerning Iran’s intentions and Dr. O’Connor’s abilities to create such an apparently prescient system. She convinces him that she is the smartest person in the room.

A third team member, BROOKS F.T. ELLIOT IV, is a former Navy SEAL and Rhodes Scholar. Elliot and Cooch are best friends from days in combat. Elliot is politically connected and the philosophical thought leader of the team. He authored the team’s long -term plan to transform the Middle East via technology enhanced education. He gives arguments in the Iran matter for a course of action by the President.

The President questions Cooch’s qualifications to act as an emissary from the US tasked to facilitate an Iranian civil war following a surprise attack by the Great Satan. Action stories are told by Elliot and others to establish Cooch’s credibility to act well under stress.

Cooch travels to Iran as a Sunni Islamic scholar to lecture at Tehran University on societal issues in Islam. His host, Jahan Ghorbani, a Shiite Islamic scholar, has arranged for Cooch to stay with him as a guest in his residence. Cooch’s host invites his brother Dahir, an Iranian army colonel, to a dinner among the three of them. The colonel is known to be unhappy with Iran’s religious leadership. Dahir and Cooch meet, first in the small dinner and then again with a larger group of senior Iranian officers. Cooch raises the possibility with them that, after the US attacks, the US will support a Saudi led, Sunni invasion of Shiite Iran, supported by US military technology and firepower. Cooch mentions the vast numbers of Sunni Muslims in the Middle East compared to Shiites. The question of initiating new negotiations with the US is raised by the Iranian officers, but rejected by Cooch as too little, too late.

A fourth team member, JEROME MASTERSON, Cooch’s long time partner in the CIA’s commando unit travels from Tangier to Rome to meet with an Israeli Mossad representative. Jerome provides Israel with news of Iran’s nuclear plans against them. They discuss responses, actions and tactics

America then initiates the surprise attack on Iran using a new weapon, a non nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse, EMP, to destroy all copper wiring and silicon in the hundreds of targets across Iran. Trucks stall, cars fail to start, pumps no longer pump. Computers are dark and there is no Internet service anywhere in Iran. In hospitals, ventilators stop ventilating and surgeons feel their way from darkened operating theaters, leaving their patients behind to die. The US Navy and Air Force follow the EMP attack with bombs and missiles along the six hundred mile length of the East Coast of the Persian Gulf and on the many armed islands, such as Bandar Abbas. Three modern Iranian submarines that threaten the US fleet are destroyed. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, drones, are everywhere; some are armed, and some loaded only with surveillance gear. For seven hours, a deafening roar of exploding ordnance denies conversation and even effective thought in and near the targets. ‘Shock and Awe’ has been redefined.

At the same time, in Northern Iran, stealthy US Air Force B2 bombers open the attack there. Known nuclear enrichment facilities are destroyed first, then Internet facilities and the city of Qom are attacked. Across Iran, headquarters and troop concentration of radical forces are attacked with bombs and missiles.

In Tehran, Cooch and Dahir team up to rescue Dahir’s family from the clutches of the radical Iranian forces. Negotiations between the Us and Iran’s nascent leadership are begun in the midst of war.

The radical forces of Iran retaliate against the US attack with a fast boat strike utilizing modern Russian-built torpedoes. A guided missile destroyer, the Dewey, is lost and the nuclear carrier George H. W. Bush is badly damaged. The US responds with more targeted devastation across Iran.

Cooch acts as a facilitator to arrange peace and an alliance between the United States and the new leadership of Iran. The war is over after three days of fighting.

The Thirteenth Hour

cover-low-resAbout The Thirteenth Hour:

This is a story for everyone who has been told to get their head out of the clouds and stop daydreaming.

It’s a story with some of the usual fantasy fixings – castles, dark sorcery, dragons, elves, faeries, and muscle-bound men in leopard-skinned underwear. But it also features a flying ironing board, some bumbling wizards, a backflipping protagonist, and a narcissistic, obsessive ruler hell-bent on living forever.

The tale begins when a young boy falls asleep during school one day. His dream transports him to another world, where he witnesses the tale of Logan, a young man, and Aurora, his childhood friend, who grow up in an orphanage in a remote, sleepy hunting and farming village. When Logan turns 18, he must leave for a new life as a soldier in King Darian IV’s Imperial Army, and when he is picked as one of eight men to be specially trained for a mysterious mission, he discovers there is more to himself than he realizes. During his adventure, Logan is reunited with Aurora, and together, the two travel to the four corners of the Earth and encounter many exotic creatures, situations, and perils in a quest to find the secret to eternal life.

But in the end, The Thirteenth Hour is less about questing after lost secrets, saving kingdoms, remaining pure of heart, and other fairy tale essentials, and more about what we experience while living, loving, dying, and becoming older.

Fans who enjoyed books such as The Princess Bride, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy or 1980s fantasy films such as The Neverending Story and Labyrinth may find a nostalgic respite inside the pages of this tale. Because, as the characters inside find out, even if becoming an adult means leaving behind the trappings of adolescence, in that mysterious place between dreams and life, there is still magic left in the world.

Author Bio:
A child of the 80s, Joshua Blum, like many other people, remembers wishing he had Marty McFly’s hoverboard from “Back to the Future 2″ to ride to and from school. For awhile, he wanted to be an American Indian hunter and spent many a misspent day making bows and arrows out of tree branches, ultimately leading to a love of archery which continues to this day. After entering that penal colony known as middle school, he decided that he ought to learn to defend himself, leading to the wide world of martial arts and lots and lots of push-ups, both of which he enjoys to this day.

All of these elements were inspirations for aspects of “The Thirteenth Hour,” which he wrote after finishing high school and edited little by little until the present day – in effect growing up with the characters. During this time, he was educated at Princeton and Penn State Universities. In total, he estimates having spent 23 years of his life in school (give or take). Despite that rap sheet, he still enjoys learning new things. He credits his mother for instilling in him a love of literature, music, and yard sales. He credits his father for teaching him to do, you know, manly things, like hit a baseball, ride a bike without falling over, and most importantly, never give up on the important things in life. He credits his younger brother for helping him stay young at heart.

He currently enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter. Although not surprising given the decade in which he grew up, he still enjoys breakdancing, though he will admit the bruises take longer to go away now that he can no longer consider himself a young adult. He hopes to forever avoid corporate middle management and is currently at work on a graphic novel for adolescents as well as a sequel to “The Thirteenth Hour.” He hopes it does not take sixteen years to finish.

*****

“…another winner. I highly recommend it to any lover of suspense, mystery, romance, or thriller. You’ll not only race through this book, but clamor for more works by this talented and polished author. Aaron Paul Lazar, author of Healey’s Cave

“…The mystery and suspense in this novel is outstanding, truly top notch, in the vein of Mary Higgins Clark, but—dare I say—even better? – In the Library

“…intricately plotted and will surprise even the most devoted mystery and susense reader. I challenge any reader to stop on page 190 of this 255 page book, to tell me who is the real serial murderer. The answer will surely blow you away. It did me. Gripping Suspense!” Sandy Heptinstall – Whispering Winds Reviews

“…Danger shimmers throughout the novel. You walk down the darkened streets with Caroline, afraid for her. You wake up in the middle of the night when she does, hearing the same faint noises she hears, afraid for her… She cannot seem to escape danger no matter how careful she is.

And you cannot stop reading…” Beth Anderson, author of Raven Talks Back

Biography

I’ve always been drawn to the dark side of the human psyche, and devoured everything from Edgar Allan Poe to Shirley Jackson growing up. It is no surprise to me I turned out to be a writer of psychological suspense, often with threads of paranormal, mystery and romance.

I like to write about ordinary women who are at a difficult time in their lives, and are suddenly faced with an external evil force. Women who are stronger than they think they are. I didn’t think a whole lot about theme until I had written a couple of books, but I realized with the writing of my third novel ‘Chill Waters’ that my books generally have to do with betrayal and abandonment in some form, and learning to trust again. And more important, learning to trust oneself. Almost any good book will tell you something about the author herself. (Or himself.) You can’t avoid it. But first and foremost I want to give readers a roller-coaster ride, one that keeps them on the edge of that proverbial seats and resonates in the imagination long after the last page is read.

In addition to my critically aclaimed and award-winning novels, my articles and short stories have appeared in any many publications including The Toronto Star, Atlantic Advocate, Seek, Home Life Magazine, Mystery Scene. My short story Dark Reunion was anthologized in investigating Women, Published by Simon & Pierre.

I’ve held workshops and given talks at various schools and libraries, including New Brunswick Community College, and the University of New Brunswick. I am also a tutor with Winghill School, a distance education school in Ottawa for aspiring writers.

I’m a member of the Writer’s Federation of New Brunswick, past regional Vice-President of Crime Writers of Canada and International Thriller Writers.
