Alico was born in a favela, or slum, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The son of a distant and irresponsible alcoholic father, he learned to take care of himself at an early age. The favela where Alico lived was controlled by drug dealers and criminals, and even his elementary school was a violent place. Wanting to escape and seek a better life, Alico’s mother and aunt begged one of the drug dealers for a risky loan, even though the women had no intention of repaying the money. They, along with Alico and his sisters, fled to the U.S., but life in America offered little improvement. It became routine for Alico to witness relatives constantly scheming and fighting, and crime in his new neighborhood of Queens rivaled that of the favela. Alico continued to grow stronger with each new obstacle, slowly learning to navigate a world defined by deception, struggle and violence.
“I was very unhappy in Brazil and looked forward to coming to a new country,” says Alico. “Only after I got here did I learn the price that I would pay for my escape.”
Always living a life on the run, Alico was told to keep his past a secret, never divulging his origins or the world from which he escaped. Having kept his previous life a mystery for many years, Alico was inspired to write “The Favela Kid” as a way of opening up and sharing the lessons he has learned. Although his story is not a traditional memoir with a happy ending, Alico hopes that it can at least let others who are struggling know that they are not alone in what they are experiencing.
