In his other life, the author is well-known science fiction/fantasy writer K. W. Jeter, the person who coined the term “Steampunk” and author of the acclaimed “Infernal Devices” and the technothriller “Farewell Horizontal.” The Kim Oh books are really different from the ones he has written before — they’re faster, funnier, and with lots more action, but with surprising depths to them as well.
In a lot of ways, the heroine Kim is sort of a psychological self-portrait, even though she’s very different from K. W., as well. Fallen Palm is my first novel. It’s loosely based on several short stories I wrote in the ’80s but never published. At my wife’s and a couple of friend’s prodding, I took up writing again in the spring of 2013 and this novel is the result. It’s set in one of my favorite places in all the world, the Florida Keys. I lived down there for a while and actually lived on a boat for a short while. I hope I was able to convey the ambiance of life in these little islands, the only tropical location you can actually drive to. But, take a boat. You’ll want to slow down.
