Author Bio:
Brooke Skipstone is a multi-award winning author who lives in Alaska where she watches the mountains change colors with the seasons from her balcony. Where she feels the constant rush toward winter as the sunlight wanes for six months of the year, seven minutes each day, bringing crushing cold that lingers even as the sun climbs again. Where the burst of life during summer is urgent under twenty-four-hour daylight, lush and decadent. Where fish swim hundreds of miles up rivers past bear claws and nets and wheels and lines of rubber-clad combat fishers, arriving humped and ragged, dying as they spawn. Where danger from the land and its animals exhilarates the senses, forcing her to appreciate the difference between life and death. Where the edge between is sometimes too alluring.

Some Laneys Died is her second novel. Her first was Someone To Kiss My Scars, also available in French (Embrasser Mes Blessures) and Spanish (Alguien Que Bese Mis Heridas).

Moonlight Kisses and MugShots by Lorelei Confer

About Moonlight Kisses and MugShots by Lorelei Confer

Ronnie Travis has a decision to make. Should she move from the only home she’s known in Miami, FL to Saddle Creek, WY; leave her LEO job, and family, to manage the Travis B&B her Aunt Sally bequeathed to her with the contingency she lives there for one year? After one year she’ll receive two and a half million dollars; nothing to scoff at. She can pay off the two morgages her parents are struggling to keep up with and have a nice little nest egg for herself.
She qualifies for a Sheriff’s Deputy position, so she accepts the position and makes the move. Unknowingly, she meets the Sheriff, her boss and Mr. Handsome at the shooting range the night before her first person to person interview with the Sheriff. They are immediately attracted to each other. Surprised to see each other at her interview, she meets the Sheriff’s dog, a golden retriever named MugShot, Mugsy for short, is all over her and she has to eventually accept her fear of large dogs when she finds out Mugsy is really her aunt’s dog and lives at the B&B and is used to sleeping in her aunt’s bed where Ronnie sleeps now. She accepts the job and she and her housekeeper, Marie celebrate.
Suspicious by nature she’s surprised at how opulent the B&B is when there are very few paying guests and then she finds the Sheriff, Mr. Handsome in his boxers raiding her fridge during the night. He is a non-paying guest and had a special agreement with Aunt Sally. She’s not sure she can afford any non-paying guests and wonders how Sally kept the place open.
Ronnie searches the office at the B&B and finds a hidden compartment in the bottom of a desk drawer. It contains a letter to her from her aunt along with a second set of books showing large deposits and payments to vendors, but the income is much more than the outgo. The letter alludes to clandestine activities, none of which she can picture her aunt doing, i.e. selling drugs, renting rooms to prostitutes, she’s to follow the money to Rosie’s Diner.
Marie invites her son, Carter and his new girlfriend to Sunday dinner and during dinner, the doorbell rings. Ronnie answers the door and her sister, Victoria (Tory) is there claiming she had nowhere else to go, she’s in trouble. Ronnie invites her to dinner and she and Carter have a great conversation at dinner. Carter volunteers, with Janelle’s help to clean up after dinner, while Marie gets fresh towels for Tory and Ronnie and Tory have a conversation in Ronnie’s bedroom. Tory reveals she’s about four months pregnant and her longtime boyfriend, Larry isn’t ready to have a baby. She doesn’t know what to do; she’s not ready either but can’t imagine not having what’s become a part of her and him. They decide to sleep on it.
When Ronnie arrives home from work the next day, she’s surprised to find Larry there holding Tory’s hand. He vows to love Tory and their baby and get married as soon as they can. He realized that once Tory was gone he wasn’t ready to go on without her and their baby. He loves them both. Their flight back to Florida leaves later that evening.
A squeaky stair step gives away someone coming and going on the back stairs; usually the Sheriff, to raid the fridge. But one night, MugShot is whining and clawing at the step. Ronnie pulls off the top board, falls backwards, and then she finds money bags and envelopes filled with one hundred-dollar bills, along with a cell phone attached to a charging cord under the step. Jumping for joy she returns to her room and listens to the cell phone has two recordings; one of a man and her aunt requesting thirty percent off the top or she takes the cell to the feds. The man finally acquiesces.
The other recording on the cell is short with two men; one of the voices is the same man on the recording and the other one sounds familiar, but she can’t place it. The new man wants a ten percent cut in lieu of police protection so he must be a lawman, possibly another deputy.
Ronnie visits Rosie’s for lunch, finds out the new proprietor’s name is Parker Cavendish. None of the waitresses know anything about him, they’re afraid of him and he’s always paying them late. He’s in and out at odd times. She goes back to the Sheriff’s office and searches on the National Police Database (NPD) and finds a residential address for him as well as his car year, make and model. She visits his house, no cars in the drive and no lights on. She goes to the Diner and finds a car parked in back matching the data she received from DMV. A man from inside the Diner comes out and gets in the car and shortly another man arrives in an unknown car. The driver goes to the first vehicle and gets in the passenger side. They sit for a minute or so and the strange man gets out, enters his own car and drives away. The first man who came out of the Diner goes back into the Diner.
Meanwhile, Ronnie decides to turn all of Sally’s evidence over to the Mitch, the Sheriff, she knows blackmail is a federal offense and all of it has to go to the FBI but Mitch wants more concrete evidence. Ronnie decides to have dinner at Rosie’s and the waitress, Dottie, takes her order, goes to the kitchen and never returns. When she investigates, she finds Dottie knocked out lying on the floor, the kitchen empty and the office torn apart. An ambulance takes Dot to the hospital with instructions to call them when she’s awake and able to talk.
Mitch and Ronnie secure the crime scene, and after Deputy Adam gets search warrants for both the Diner and Parker’s home; they search the torn apart office and find another set of books. After a call from Deputy Damien Sykes informs them Dottie is awake, Mitch calls a locksmith while Ronnie heads to the hospital to question Dottie. Dot’s belligerent but remembers almost everything. She leads Ronnie to believe Deputy Damien Sykes is her husband, but her husband didn’t hit her.
That night Ronnie takes a drive out to Parker’s house and parks behind some bushes and large trees. With night vision goggles she surveils his house when suddenly Damien taps on her door scaring her. He drags her out and she pulls away, her weapon drawn. She tells him to put his gun down, he refuses, and she shoots the ground. He gets in his car and heads toward Parker’s. Ronnie follows him on foot. She looks in the windows with lights on and sees Damien shoot a man, she assumes is Parker, who is packing a suitcase on the bed. Parker falls to the floor, shot in cold blood before her very eyes; Damien leaves and Ronnie hightails it back to her car.
When she arrives there, she finds the Sheriff and Deputy Adam followed her. Adam tails Damien while Mitch and Ronnie head up the lane expecting to find Parker’s body, but the house is empty; the suitcase is gone. Damien arrives back at the house, Sheriff left Ronnie sitting in the car, but she ran into the nearby woods when Damien arrived. He leaves and Mitch and Ronnie go to Ronnie’s car. As a convoy they head back to the jail. Sheriff wants Damien to arrest him for the murder of Parker, but no one can identify Parker except Ronnie.
Since Ronnie’s the only one who’s seen Parker, she looks through mugshot after mugshot but no luck. They call it a day and head home.
During the night, Ronnie hears the creaky step and investigates. An unfamiliar man is breaking into the Sheriff’s room. Ronnie gets him in handcuffs and interrogates him. Richard Wilson is a neighbor of the Sheriff’s parents and he’s come to tell the Sheriff that Damien kidnapped his parents and they are at a place that only Mitch and his closest friends know about. Ronnie calls Mitch, who goes ape shit, and tells Ronnie to wait for him. Of course, Ronnie takes Richard with her as a guide and they get to the old fort where Mitch and his friends Chase, Elliott and Dillon used as a
modern-day man cave and wouldn’t let Richard be part of their group.
They park at a turnout and hike the remaining half mile. The moon lights the way and they’re ahead of Mitch. He hears a shot and takes off running.
Ronnie finds the Sheriffs’ parents tied up and gagged sitting behind a tree, then catches Damien unaware and orders Damien to drop his weapon. “Do it now!” she bellows. When he doesn’t comply, she shoots the gun out of his hand, he falls to his knees and fiddles with his boot; she thinks for a weapon. She thrusts a booted foot on his chest knocking him backward but not before he pulls out a small gun and aims it at her. She’s about to shoot again when Mitch jumps on Damien; wrestles the gun away and handcuffs him.
In the meantime, Mitch thanks Richard for letting him know via Ronnie and thanks her for helping his parents. They hear thundering hoof beats and Chase arrives riding his black stallion, Midnight, bareback to make sure Mitch was okay. He heads back to his ranch to get the quad to take Mitch’s parents to his home and deliver them to their house in his truck. The remaining crew hikes back to their cars and heads to the jail.
With an eyewitness, Damien is arrested for murder of Parker but without a body can’t prove anything. Ronnie recognizes Damien’s voice as one of the men on the last cell recording. Ronnie keeps going through the Mugshot notebook.
Exhausted from the last few days with little sleep, she heads home for a quick shower and a nap. Mitch follows her; he’s upset to see and face the danger she was in and wants to check on her and make sure she’s okay. He goes to her room, gets in bed with her and holds her all night; both safe and secure. He leaves in the morning before she awakes.
Mugshot after mugshot, Ronnie continues to turn the pages until one man looks similar to Parker, except this man has a beard, wears glasses and his name is Albert Morrow. Once she’s at the office she researches Albert Morrow in all the databases she has at her disposal and finds nothing.
FBI Agent Joe Fritz is notified by his tech team that someone has searched for both Albert Morrow and Parker Cavendish. He calls Ronnie and wants to see her in an hour.
In the meantime, the Sheriff interrogates Damien who now is talking. He tells them Parker planned the whole thing; to fake his death so he could get away and Parker’s been a fugitive for years. Sheriff requests Dottie be brought in for questioning to find out what she knows about Parker.
Agent Fritz arrives, he and Mitch go way back, and explains that he and Albert Morrow were partners until Albert went bad and has been on the run; really good at hiding. Fritz has been searching for him for over six years and has a Denver drug cartel under surveillance; they’ve seen the money drops at Rosie’s, etc.
Mitch explains that Damien admitted to Parker/Albert faked his death and is, once again on the run; Joe’s not surprised. Dottie arrives. She gives up and squeals, telling them everything and especially that her real name is Dorothy Morrow. The front door opens and a man steps in looking for Sheriff Mitch. Dottie hears his voice and runs to him, her husband. Mitch and Ronnie recognize the man’s voice as the one man on both recordings. And when three people blackmailed him; he decided to settle down by buying a Diner and making a go of it. But his wife, Dottie gets greedy and involved with the drug cartel when they’re in Denver, before moving to Saddle Creek. The diner is the perfect place to launder money.
Joe and Albert talk, Albert turns himself in, and Joe arranges transport for both husband and wife, as well as, Damien, for conspiracy. Mitch turns all of Sally’s evidence over to Joe as part of their case.
Late in the night, Mitch and Ronnie meet at the breakfast table and over pie and a glass of milk, Ronnie confesses she can’t keep the B&B and will have to sell it. She’s used all her resources and can no longer meet the mortgage payments. She cries and Mitch comforts her but later he has a stroke of genius.
In the morning he heads to the bank, uses his savings for most of his adult life and pays off the B&B ‘s mortgage. He presents the deed and paid-in-full bank paperwork to Ronnie who promises to pay every penny back to him.
A few days later, when Ronnie stops by the B&B for lunch, quite a few black SUV’s are parked at the curb. When she enters the house, it’s turned upside down and Marie is crying. “I couldn’t stop them,” she blubbers. “They came in, showed her papers.” Ronnie wants to talk to whoever is in charge. Agent Joe Fritz pops his head around the corner.
He apologizes; he should have done this earlier; nothing personal just business. Since the illegal money was used to pay for the renovations on the building the entire property and contents will be searched and seized. They cannot get their personal belongings until the search is completed. It will remain a property of the court until their investigation is complete.
Later that afternoon, Ronnie gets a call from Joe; they can get their things now and a locksmith will be here in an hour to change the locks. She notifies Mitch and they meet at the B&B and pack their bags. Marie will stay with her son in his mother-in-law suite, Mitch at his parents and after a quick call to Dillon, Ronnie will stay with Avri and Dillon. Their house is adjacent to the B&B and Ronnie already met Avri while out for a walk.
They go their separate ways and thanks to Attorney Avri’s connections she’s able to expedite the release of the property, especially since Ronnie had the deed free and clear. She sets up a repayment plan.
A couple weeks later, thanks to Avri they can finally move back into the B&B. While cleaning up the place and unpacking, a certified letter arrives for Ronnie; it’s from Aunt Sally’s attorney in Miami. When she opens it, she pulls out a check for two and a half million dollars; the proceeds from Sally’s life insurance. Elated she can finally pay off the feds as well as help her parents, they all head to bed after an exhausting and exciting day.
Mitch can’t sleep; can’t be in the same house with Ronnie and not be with her. He wants to hold her in his arms, so he sneaks down to her room and slips into bed with her. She welcomes him with open arms. They have sex and sleep in each other’s arms until morning.
Mitch wakes and slides out of bed in the morning, trying not to disturb Ronnie, she needs the rest. He goes to work. Ronnie is aghast at Mitch’s snake slithering attitude of leaving her bed without a word. She’s furious; she’s not his whore or his prostitute. He has to go. She packs up his things in his room and piles the boxes on the front porch. Mitch returns to go back to bed with her when she throws another box out the door and almost creams him. He wants to know what’s going on and she tells him she’s cleaning house. He has to leave and can’t come back. He loads the boxes and stores them at his parents. Then spends the night on an uncomfortable cot in a jail cell. The following morning, still really pissed and unsure what to do he finds himself at Chase’s ranch with Dillon. They sit on the front porch and drink coffee and Mitch finally admits and accepts that he loves her. His close friends convince him to tell her, show her, and don’t back down.
He goes to the B&B, Marie made spaghetti and Ronnie invites him to dinner knowing they have to clear the air. He eats with them and then asks Ronnie to step outside on the deck. They need to talk. She gets a jacket and follows. The moon is bright when Mitch tells her he’s tired of pretending he doesn’t love her when every inch of his body tells him otherwise; he wants her, wants to sleep with her, wake up with her every morning, grow old together and watch their children catch lightning bugs in the yard and build a snowman.
She loves him too. He kisses her in the moonlight.

Epilogue:

Next summer

Her wedding day: the day Ronnie’s dreamed of her entire life; an evening wedding. Her parents fly in from FL; the back yard is decorated in hanging lanterns and bouquets of daisies and baby’s breath. Chase walks the maid of honor, her sister, down the aisle. Ronnie follows, her hand on her father’s arm, and once her eyes meet Mitch’s eyes, they are mesmerized; her father hands her over to Mitch, who kisses her hand. They recite their vows and when the minister says, “I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the lanterns are extinguished, and they kiss in the moonlight.

Lorelei Confer

I live on a densely populated peninsula in the mid west coast of Florida with my husband, (my high school sweetheart), and AJ, my long-haired Chihuahua. With the help of my husband, we raised two grown respectable and responsible sons, who have given me two daughters-in law and three grandchildren. I’ve trekked all over the country, including Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, California, and Montana, which are some of my favorite settings for my books.

I wrote my first story in the fourth grade in the form of a play—something about getting a shot at the doctor—it actually was produced by my teacher for parents and students in a Friday afternoon assembly. When I was older, I spilled my guts in a journal every night and wrote long newsy love letters to Viet Nam to my now husband of 50 years. I majored in English in college and worked in the finance arena as a CFO for thirty-five years.
I am a multi published author of Romantic Suspense; two series, the Deadly series with six books, and the Saddle Creek series of four books but a Christmas trilogy. I have also written and published a compilation of four short Christmas stories: Christmas Awakenings. I am a mentor to others helping them write, complete and polish their books for submission.
After six years as a copy editor for The Wild Rose Press, and two years as an editor I decided to devote more time to my family and my own writing career.
An author of romantic suspense, I love reading almost as much as writing. I have filled my book shelves with my favorites, i.e. Harlan Coben, Eliza March, Johanna Lindsey, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Desiree Holt, Catherine Bybee, Kendra Elliott, Shirley Jump, BJ Daniels, Andrew Gross, and Bobbi Smith, just to mention a few, as well as all the classics.

Personal Interest: I love scrapbooking and genealogy, connecting stories with pictures. I’ve sewn, quilted and have machine embroidered but my interests have changed as I’ve grown older. (I’m not really that old.) Now, I really enjoy writing stories, many times using my real life experiences, to tell the tale.

I have always loved to read. I still remember my first day of kindergarten. I waited for that special day for what seemed like years. I wanted to read so bad and so I could be big like my older brother and sister. Imagine my disappointment when the teacher spent her time getting to know us and getting us settled. When I got home, Mom asked me how I liked school so far. I told her it was dumb because nobody taught me to read! I am happiest when I have a book in my hand and a glass of wine at my elbow!

Stalingrad: A Captivating Guide to the Battle of Stalingrad and Its Impact on World War II

About Stalingrad: A Captivating Guide to the Battle of Stalingrad and Its Impact on World War II

If you want to discover the captivating history of Stalingrad, then keep reading…
The Battle of Stalingrad is rightfully known as the “turning point” of the Second World War. Before the battle, which took place from August 1942 until the beginning of February 1943, the Germans were victorious everywhere, despite some localized setbacks (for example, at Moscow in 1941). After Stalingrad, the Germans were constantly pushed back, with some notable examples being Kursk in the summer of 1943 and the Bulge in 1944.
During WWII, the Soviet Union suffered somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty million dead. For those of you reading in the United States and the United Kingdom, the death toll for those nations in the war was around 415,000 and 483,000, respectively. In the approximate six months of the Battle of Stalingrad, the Germans, their Hungarian, Romanian, and Italian allies, and the Soviets lost an estimated one million men.

His Reckless Heart

About His Reckless Heart

He was the one that got away. Or rather, ran away.
One of seven brothers, all of them hot enough to need a cold shower and a blast of AC.
We were supposed to get married, but he ran away without a goodbye. Something about needing to join the military and serve.
Good luck, buddy. Hope it is all you wanted it to be.
And here he is back again in Green Valley. A wounded warrior.
Every cell in my body woke up the moment I saw him again.
But I don’t trust him as far as I can throw up.
I ain’t interested in building a future in my head that could get yanked away again. Unfortunately, it isn’t my mind that gets to make the decision on where things go with this second chance at my first love.
It’s my reckless heart.

Strength at the Broken Places by C. Greg Long

About Strength at the Broken Places by C. Greg Long

Strength at the Broken Places is a memoir about hope and healing arising from failure and loss.

Passionate and joyful, forceful and tender, humorous and heart-breaking, Strength at the Broken Places is both an intimate memoir and an empowering guide to hope and a new beginning.

Greg grew up during the economic prosperity and optimism of the baby boomer generation when the virtues of apple-pie American life were extolled. It was also the generation when divorce became more prevalent, leaving the first generation of latch-key kids home alone. In this unforgettable memoir, Greg takes you on a journey from his latch-key childhood in southern Georgia to the heights of career success as a pastor, professor, and publishing executive, only to succumb to failure in both his career and family.

Greg finds the answer to failure in the most unexpected places. He embraces and overcomes the past, confronts his mistakes, and explores a transcendent path to new life and restoration. His story helps us discover why failure is never fatal, how we can make peace with others whom we have disappointed and hurt, how we can embrace and overcome anger and loss, and out of our wounds how we become wounded healers for others.

Life is not about us; it’s about how we care for those around us. From a failed journey of outward personal success to the purposeful and heart-felt ministry of serving others, Greg found the secret to a fulfilled life—an awareness that it is easier to succeed than to fail.

Strength at the Broken Places will lead you on a journey to discover:
• How true and lasting change occurs
• How failure does not define us
• How authentic identity is not determined by what you do or to whom you are related
• How success comes from intention rather than effort
• How to answer the four critical questions that every person must answer

This is an unforgettable memoir of hope and transformation—a book that will change the way you view your life, others, and the world.

Greg Long captures both the fleeting bliss of dreams, the harsh reality of choices, and, most important of all, the unstoppable power of God’s love.
