The Paths They Walked by Tony Varnis

About The Paths They Walked by Tony Varnis

A fable of life in the “Age of Aquarius”. Graduating from High School two friends, one male and one female, face life in the late 1960s. While Susan rushes forward moving to New York City, embracing the world eagerly, Dan, indecisive and unsure of himself, stays in their hometown where he sullenly muddles his way forward with no plan. The paths they head down outwardly appear completely divergent, but in reality, there is a strangely vague parallel to them. The difference is within themselves and how they react to the events in their lives. The two separately make their ways through that socially turbulent time, never noticing how each decision they make affects the courses that their lives take in an era of Vietnam, “sex, drugs, rock and roll”’ and “tune in, turn on, drop out”. Neither one seems to be able to recognize the opportunities to change their direction when they see them as they head towards the climactic moments of their lives.

Author Bio:
A lifelong member of the working class, Vietnam veteran, bookbinder, warehouseman, retail worker, and laborer with a passion for good times, laughter, old cars, cold beer, Nordic skiing, and nature.
I am most at home with the ordinary people of this world. The ones that interest me are the ones who have taken a few hard knocks and come up laughing. They are the ones who don’t run from the rain, accepting that they are going to get wet and feel it’s all a part of the journey; in other words, the common clay that is the foundation of this world they are the people I love and choose to write about.

Author Bio:
Born and raised in New Castle Delaware, I attended William Penn high school where I participated in JROTC and played Lacrosse. During my high school days I earned three JROTC national awards and two lacrosse honors before graduating and attending the University of Delaware. As a UD student I wrote for my school’s sketch comedy show, and also joined the university’s Tae Kwon Do team, where I earned my black belt and received twenty-one competition medals. During my sophomore and junior years (2010 and 2011) I participated in the Mr. Delaware pageant, winning the “Best Body” competition both years and coming in second place in 2011. I graduated from the University of Delaware in 2013 with a B.A. in psychology and was hired by a mental health facility I interned for while in college.

Not being satisfied with where I was working, I sought out a career in law enforcement. However, I wasn’t considered after applying multiple times due to being a recreational marijuana smoker. I continued working for the mental health facility until I finally parted ways in 2014, and worked for two different temp agencies. In 2016 I parted ways with the temp agencies and began working for Uber and Lyft. While participating in a Spartan race in 2017 I was recruited by a Homeland Security agent, and was hired by Homeland Security in 2018 as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer.

In 2015 I signed a contract with a publishing company named Desert Breeze. I was contracted to have my manuscript “Chaos Company” published by them. Unfortunately in 2017 my contract was terminated due to Desert Breeze closing down. With the rights to my work reverted back to me I decided to self-publish my work in 2017, and published another action/adventure novel titled “Gargoyle” in 2018.
