Hello, and thank you for checking out my book, Training Wheels for Teachers. Five years ago, I was inspired by a friend to write this book. I’d been guest-speaking in his classroom management class for aspiring teachers. Seventeen years ago, when I received my credential, these classes didn’t exist. New teachers were grossly unprepared for the rigors of the classroom. You either swam or sank, and survival largely depended on the ability to control student behavior.
My book is full of practical ideas that new teachers can begin implementing right away. Not only will you learn about classroom management techniques (the overarching theme of the book), but you’ll learn how to set up the classroom, create partnerships with parents, and assign meaningful classwork and homework. There are also chapters devoted to writing and teaching lesson plans, how to get the most out of student-led groups, and how to effectively use technology during instructional time. My book is semi-biographical in nature and full of anecdotal and entertaining stories as it chronicles my journey from tragedy to triumph. I’m hopeful that new teachers can learn from the boot camp experiences I’ve been through, so they’ll be better prepared and their future students will get the best education possible.
