False Fathers (Waxwood Series: Book 2)

About False Fathers (Waxwood Series: Book 2)

Sometimes no father is better than a false father.

In 1898 California, Jake Alderdice comes of age as a shy and contemplative youth who is passionate about art. On vacation in Waxwood, now a fashionable resort town, he meets Harland Stevens, who takes an interest in the young man’s artistic ambitions. Stevens seizes upon the fatherless young man to counsel him toward a path to manhood inspired by Teddy Roosevelt and Thoreau. He introduces Jake to The Order of Actaeon, a secret society built upon Roosevelt’s ideals of masculine virility and virtue.

But the path to maturity is a complex thing in the Gilded Age. Will his journey free him from the Alderdice family illusions, half-truths, and lies that have kept him a child? Or will it lead him into the world of Actaeon, where the hunter becomes the hunted?

A Grave Misunderstanding: A Simon Grave Mystery

About A Grave Misunderstanding: A Simon Grave Mystery

Murder has come once more to the seaside town of Crab Cove, testing the mettle of “almost handsome” Detective Simon Grave and his “nearly invisible” partner, Sergeant Barry Blunt, who investigate a locked-room mystery with a significant twist: the prime suspects are in the locked room, not the victim, a logic-defying situation.

I was born in a hospital that has since been torn down, grew up on a street that has since changed its name, in a house that has since changed its number. Everywhere around me my life seems to be erasing itself. Before the eraser wears out and rips through the paper of my life, I spend my days writing furiously against the darkness.

As grim as that sounds, my books tend toward the humorous. In fact, not reading my books could put you seriously out of touch with frivolity.

My latest book, A Grave Misunderstanding, was a 1st PLACE WINNER in the 2018 PenCraft Awards for Literary Excellence (Humor) and an AWARD FINALIST in the 2018 American Fiction Awards (humor/comedy/satire).

Writing has become more than a hobby for me, and much less than a job.

I grew up in a small West Texas town and began writing years before I started in the journalism program at my high school. When I became the editor for my junior year, the joke about me was that I couldn’t sign my name in less than 300 words. Nothing has really changed decades later.

Blood of Like Souls, my first novel, took about 16 years from its humble few pages to getting a cover. The second in the series, Tears of Like Souls, took about eight months. Promises of Like Souls took about four months. Secrets of Like Souls took 60 days. It was so much easier now that I had such a feel for the characters. I’m currently working on the fifth in the series, so we’ll see how that is going, but it will be about a year I suspect.

I love writing. Surviving American Healthcare was also released, and it is what I wish every one of my patients knew about their own health, the healthcare system, and how to prepare themselves for changes as they age. You can find it on a similar Author Page for Valerie Conrad. Go take a peek.

Leviathan

About Leviathan

Leviathan, a collection of poetry by Kent C Schroer, is a thrilling mixture of old and new: it both embodies the struggles of the author’s past, and the present wisdom of a man with lived experience. One thing that makes this collection so special is its origin. In between his first book, Pillars of Sand, and his second, the since unreleased version of Leviathan, an event took place that almost cost him his life- hence, this book, and this version, would never have seen the light of day were it not for some wonderful people- friends, family, and strangers included. Where Pillars of Sand saw the poet in turmoil, Leviathan is a book dealing more with resolution, finding peace in oneself, and keeping demons at bay. In it, you will find themes of religion and myth, nature, and personal events that have offered, in many ways, strength and healing. Ultimately, this book is an exercise in reflection: it is a peek into the past of someone battling with mental illness, drugs and dark ideations, while keeping a hopeful eye on the future. Kent has picked only the best poems from the first collection, and the best from the second, and with a writing finesse that has grown with age, distilled them down to their purest, most impactful forms. This is the perfect collection for any lover of poetry, and above all for those who feel the universal struggles of being a human.

Author Bio:
Kent Schroer was born in Orange County at the turn of the 90's, and grew up in Corona for the first, few years of his life- from there, he spent another 15 years living in the San Bernardino mountains, a place he would call his home from 3rd all the way up to 12th grade and beyond. It was here, surrounded by a mountain rife with all the seasons, the notable extremes being heavy snow and smoldering fire, that he began his writing career. The extremes of these seasons would also go on to reflect how he began to see the world: often there was no grey area when it came to effort- either it was done to its fullest, or not done at all. It was at age 15 that he began his writing career, starting, interestingly enough, with a poem about his older brother, who had since gone off the war. From there he honed his skills, until, at the age of 16, he was published in his first collection of poetry, Alabaster & Mercury, Vol. I, named after a Myspace group of the same name. Kent Schroer has been challenging the norms of poetry since he was a young writer, betraying the traditional for themes and ideas more compelling. A long-time writer, he has carved his own path, relying on the concept that less is often more, and that poetry should find a happy medium between appealing to the layman, as well as those with more sensitive tastes. Over the years, with new life experiences and thus sources to draw upon, he wanted to write a collection of poems that would serve as both a reflection and looking glass into his inner world. First it was Pillars of Sand, a book wrought from turmoil, and now, it is Leviathan, a book dealing more with resolution and reminiscence. Since he was sixteen, he has been published in a number of collections; he studied at UC Riverside, where he was taught under such notable poets as Juan Felipe Herrera and Chris Abani, and received his degree in Creative Writing. From there on, he has been striving to hone his craft and find his own niche in the poetry world, drawing upon such writers as Dylan Thomas, Jane Hirshfield and W.S Merwin, notably his earlier works.
