Island Of The Gods by C.M. KANE

Island Of The Gods by C.M.KANE

it’s been over nine hundred years since the gods of antiquity returned to Earth, and much has changed. We are no longer masters of our own world.
Tae Rames, a precocious seventeen-year-old downloads a vid she knows she shouldn’t, never realizing the powerful forces that she is about to release. She inadvertently discovers a deadly secret, a secret that someone very dangerous has gone to great lengths to keep hidden. The dead god Loki, may in fact, still be alive and simply trapped. Despite a desperate attempt at trying to erase the evidence of her snooping, her new enemies track the leak and mistakenly blame her twin brother, kidnapping both him and Tae’s mother to find out what they know. Desperate, and unsure of whom she can trust, Tae decides her only option is to free Loki and plead for his help. But Loki is in the one place no one ever wants to go—the Island—a place where all Earth’s criminals are sent to fight and die, a place from which there is no escape. Worse still, unbeknownst to Tae, an enemy with a twisted hatred of his own has begun to stalk her. Can the intervention of Zeus help when, thanks to a kindly priest, he discovers that something untoward is happening on his least favorite planet. Or will serious complications arise when he is followed by some of the other gods, all of who are curious to find out exactly what their leader is up to.

I was born in Central Victoria – Australia, and apart from travelling around my own country, I’ve had a couple of wonderful holidays in Rarotonga -beautiful- and New Zealand -gobsmackingly stunning, but I’ve always come back home. I’m a hopeless animal lover and own three old cats. I also look after a couple of strays -strays seem to sense my cataholism and seek me out. Like so many in the world I love reading. I adore entering new worlds and meeting new people, and that’s ultimately what lead me to writing down some of the stories poking around in my head. My main hope is that people have a little fun with them, and that I can entertain them, for at least a small portion of their day.

Between Cancer and Capricorn

About Between Cancer and Capricorn

Between Cancer and Capricorn’
A synopsis

Robert and Harry Bowen tread the narrow margins between love and lust, guilt and redemption-life and death, as the levelling dust of fate appears to dictate the course their lives will take. Inspired, in part, by poet James Shirley’s premise that there is no armour against fate, faint shadows from my own past flit across the pages of this book.

Born into post second world war England, the three Bowen brothers appear to be at the mercy of fate. The two youngest, Robert and David, become orphans when their brother, Harry, a soldier home on embarkation leave, accidentally kills their mother while threatening his father with a shotgun.
Their father, George Bowen, who has an undiagnosed, depressive illness, shields Harry from the law by taking the blame for the death before committing suicide.
This tragedy is compounded when David dies in a fire at an orphanage.

After countryman, Bert Croker, persuades him to do so, the traumatized, quixotic, Robert Bowen, makes his way to London, where he secures employment as a skivvy in a hotel kitchen. He remains unaware that it was Harry who killed their mother.
While pursuing his ambition to become a successful writer, he meets beautiful Barbara Meadows. They fall in love.

Harry, and his ‘old sweat’ friend, Jim Feltham, to whom he has confessed that he has accidentally killed his own mother, are taken prisoner during the Korean War. Careless of his own life, Harry manages to contrive a reckless escape.
Later, while acting as a driver for a high-ranking officer in Hong Kong, the vulnerable, guilt-ridden Harry is easy prey for treacherous, Linda Yeung., seducing him in an attempt to persuade him to commit an act of treason.
Linda Yeung and her co-conspirators are killed in a horrifying car crash while being pursued by Harry.
As a result of his actions he is coerced into joining a sinister branch of MI6, known as ‘Gordon’s Ghosts’

When Barbara is ‘discovered’ by professional photographer, Jeep Allan, and becomes a fashion magazine’s ‘Coronation Year Girl’ a series of minor misunderstandings lead Robert to believe that Barbara has abandoned him. He becomes a steward on a passenger liner and promptly falls foul of the ship’s bully, Geordie Brighouse. With the help of two gay crew members, Hildy and Little Mo, Robert succeeds in getting the better of him.

After saving a sergeant from being murdered by vengeful IRA man, Brian Mayhew, in the Aden Protectorate, Harry meets and falls in love with Jane Hazell, the nurse who had tended to him while he was recovering from the injuries he had received in Korea.

Reconciled with Barbara, and on the brink of success as a writer, fate ensures that Robert encounters Jim Feltham in Mombasa. Discharged from the army and mourning the recent death of his wife, Feltham inadvertently reveals to Robert that it was Harry who killed their mother.

With the help of BBC broadcaster, Vernon Farrell, the traumatized Robert discovers that Harry is stationed at the Atomic Research Centre in Woomera, South Australia.
Unaware that he intends to exact deadly revenge on Harry, Farrell allows the mentally unbalanced Robert to accompany him to Woomera, where he is due to make a ‘two-way’ Christmas radio broadcast.

Before Robert can meet his brother he suffers a nervous breakdown and is evacuated from Woomera on a ‘plane carrying two leading physicists. Harry, having learned of Robert’s presence, inveigles himself aboard the aircraft.

The pilot, in the pay of Chinese mercenaries, led by Fat San, brings the aircraft down on the desolate Nullarbor Plain, where they are waiting to kidnap the scientists. Avoiding capture, Robert and Harry are thrown together in a desperate fight for survival, during the course of which, they become somewhat reconciled; ‘blood of my blood, flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone’.

When it is over, Harry escapes into the desert with a large sum of money appropriated from Fat San’s body.
Robert’s ordeal in the desert has the affect of restoring him to health and he retuns to England with a full understanding of the torment his brother has been suffering. He marries Barbara, and having received a cryptic note from Harry, the newly-weds embark on a journey to where he is living with Jane Hazell, on an island ‘somewhere between Cancer and Capricorn.’

Author Bio:
In an attempt to escape from dire, Dickensian poverty, I had, thanks to school and mobile libraries, become an avid reader before, like some sort of latter-day David Copperfield, leaving home in order to make my own way in a world that has long since disappeared [see my autobiography ‘AS FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER’] Inspired by the likes of RL Stevenson, JB Priestley, Henry Williamson, Rudyard Kipling and many other great authors, I continued to write a plethora of naïve stories and poems.
The next thing I knew, I was in the army and being shot at by rebellious tribesmen in the wilds of the Aden Protectorate! Then, after service in Hong Kong [see my latest novel ‘BETWEEN CANCER AND CAPRICORN’] I volunteered for and was accepted into the elite, swashbuckling force, the Trucial Oman Scouts. To quote Joe Gargery, ‘What larks, Pip, old chap!’
Years later, it was my privilege to form the Trucial Oman Scouts Association and be its chairman for twenty-six years [see ‘ARE YOU THE MAN?’ a unique collection of memoirs and extremely rare photographs illustrating our life in the Seven Sheikhdoms].
World travel, love and marriage, two talented sons and three, equally talented grandchildren-a couple of medals, two ‘creative writing’ prizes and some awards for not poisoning too many people when I worked as a chef, in fact- riches galore!
Eventually, I was able to take early retirement from my position as a university’s Head of Hospitality Services, write my books and have them self- published. I saw no point in approaching publishers; you know, those types who, over the years, have rejected everything from ‘Animal Farm’ to ‘Zen and the Art of Motor-cycle Maintenance’.
My sequel to ‘Oliver Twist’, ‘Jack Dawkins-being the further adventures of the Artful Dodger’, has gained five star reviews from readers and critics all over the world. American author, Anthony Avina, has stated that ‘it is a breath-taking and beautiful story that every reader will want to have this story in their lives.’ Go to it, then!

The Searching by Kevin Farran

About The Searching by Kevin Farran

How do we define home? Who are our true friends? What is allegiance to country, to love? There is only one way to find out… fight for it.

Arriving from Japan as a ten-year-old, Kenichi Sugano grew up consumed by comic book superheroes, baseball and camaraderie. Kenichi was a rough and tumble kid like any in America. When he was twenty that all changed, with the attack on Pearl Harbor.

World War Two paranoia gripped the American populace. Fueled by speculation, fear, retribution, and even greed, Japanese Americans were dispossessed, herded into internment camps, and treated lower than common criminals. Without any form of due process or legal protection their lives were torn asunder. Kenichi’s family, being recent immigrants, were thrust into the spartan, brutal Tule Lake Interment Center. Unable to endure the repression of the camp, Kenichi sets out to prove himself to his family, his lover, his country and himself.

Defying his father’s wishes Kenichi volunteers to fight for his family’s captors. Kenichi’s journey, beginning with the 442 squadron, spans from the blood-drenched bogs of Europe to the smoking, staggering corpse that was Tokyo in the final days of the war.

Through societies saturated with mutually flammable propaganda, and manipulated by the rampant hubris of military madmen, Kenichi valiantly serves his country and struggles for his identity. Nurtured by the true hearts of brave women and the steaming bloody hearts of dying friends, Kenichi stumbles to find a culture, and a love he can call his own.

One Japanese American’s search for self, in a time when humanity seemed intent on
self-destruction.

Naomi sees her first corpse in a Colorado Springs grocery store, but it won’t be her last. With devastating speed, a plague sweeps first the city, then the state, then the world, leaving less than 1% of the population to go on. Naomi, a gentle and sheltered housewife, finds herself fighting for survival in a world populated by desperate people, where might-makes-right, and mercy and compassion are in short supply. Fellow survivors Jack, a youth minister from Woodland Park; Grace, a 17-year-old high school student from Limon; and Naomi’s daughter Piper, a student at the University of Northern Colorado, all find themselves searching for a safe path forward…because it’s not just the world that has changed.

The plague that decimates the human race also pushes mankind into evolutionary change. Those who survive are different, profoundly so, in ways they are just beginning to comprehend. As Naomi struggles to protect and reunite what’s left of her family, she must also learn to understand and accept the changes in herself. In this strange new world, her survival, and the survival of those she loves, depends on it.

Quest For The Scepter

About Quest For The Scepter

A STOLEN SCEPTER, A WORLD IN PERIL

When the arch druid Faolukan stole the Scepter of Elyon, he plunged the medieval Celtic world called Erde into a Dark Age. But the prince who was prophesied to steal it back has been killed, and now nothing can stop the coming darkness.

ONLY ONE CAN BRING IT BACK

Orphaned Tristan slaves at his uncle’s forge and longs to erase the dishonor his wastrel father and harlot mother bequeathed him. When a squire discovers that Tristan is the prince’s exact double, the fate of Erde weighs heavily upon him. Reluctantly, Tristan agrees to masquerade as the savior prince, lead a chosen Company of nobles, and seek the Scepter across the sea.

Before riding from his forest village, Tristan tells his life-long friend Caitir she must stay behind. But this intrepid lass has other ideas. She stows aboard the departing ship.

AHEAD — A DANGEROUS TREK

Cryptic texts hint that the Scepter lies hidden beyond the Fell Bogs, haunt of mesmerizing marsh spirits. It’s even more distant than the oppressive dark forest of the Waldreich, reign of misshapen wolves and the treacherous, treetop-dwelling Naz. Into such dangers, Tristan’s Company must follow a trail of ancient clues.

ONE LAD AGAINST A POWERFUL SORCERER

In service to the Deamhan Lord, Faolukan pledges to stop the group with all the magic, sorcery, and monsters at his command, including Tristan’s worst fear—a dark, subterranean cavern where stalks the creature of shadows, the barghest whose name is Thrag.

But how can a mere blacksmith’s nephew and a cooper’s daughter ever hope to defeat the most powerful sorcerer the world has ever known? How can anyone stop the coming darkness?

IN THE GREAT HIGH FANTASY TRADITION

The Scepter and Tower Trilogy strives to continue the epic high fantasy tradition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings, David Farland’s The Rune Lords, and Robert Jordan’s The Wheel Of Time series.

This book is being offered for $0.99.

Mark wrote his first twelve pages at the age of ten, complete with drawings of a prairie fire, Indians, and a stampede. He is the author of The Scepter and Tower Trilogy, an epic high fantasy adventure series for young adults (and adults) set in a Celtic world that’s not quite a mirror of earth. Through Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, he’s also published two novels of Christian historical fiction set in ancient Celtic Ireland at the time of St. Patrick.

At various times, Mark has welded rails for the railroad, inspected glass in a glass factory, given aid checks to welfare clients, and programmed micro-code for IBM. He recently helped plant a church where he still volunteers. He and his wife enjoy traveling with recent visits to Japan, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Ireland, France, Italy, and Switzerland. And sometimes, during his travels, story ideas will seek him out.

Mark spends most of his time at his desk writing, or following his miniature Australian shepherd around the neighborhood.
