5. I produce my driver’s license for proof, careful to cover my picture so as not to be recognized and therefore mobbed by crazed fans.
6. My neighbor threatens to call the police.
7. My dog insists we leave, and I lower my baseball cap because I do not wish to be recognized and…etc.
8. I hear police sirens and while hiding below my basement trap door my dog decides to move out.
9. While perusing a book chock full of fun survival techniques, it occurs to me I don’t own a dog.

Vegan, minimalist, musician and writer of five novels, I am always thinking about life and how everyone has a story. I have a love of science and history and I find it satisfying to combine these into my novels. As a great reader of science I make sure I use factual context in my work. It makes the settings real for me and I can imagine my characters in well documented worlds.

I have an Earth Science degree, which sadly I have never used in the real world. I was determined to share my love of science and the natural world and decided to write a novel based on Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand’s central North Island. That’s how I started writing. The research was fascinating and I have never looked back.

I struggle to accurately describe the genre I write in: it’s suspenseful, romantic, historic. I use real events to place my characters and although I have written only two pure historical fiction novels, the others are chock full of real history.

The interesting thing about writing novels is that sometimes the character can do something I don’t expect. Suddenly a situation occurs that I hadn’t planned and a character acts in a way that is completely comfortable for that character but which was unforeseen. It can turn the book on its head. But that’s okay because that’s life isn’t it. We deal with all sorts of personalities and being around people modifies our behaviour.

I am part way through walking the length of New Zealand.
