I cannot believe it myself, but at age 6, I told my family I planned to be a writer. Why they nodded in agreement I’ll never know.

I grew up in Toronto when it was a much smaller city. Then, I moved to Los Angeles, and New York and a few other places to get new experiences. Now I’m back and live North of Toronto with my husband and with visits from our two children and their partners.

The first story I ever read was a book I found in our basement. My grandfather had been a book peddler and there was a weathered green trunk full of classic literature. The first one I read was The Picture of Dorian Gray. I have never forgotten it. Who would?

My desk is an immense white wooden slab door anchored by a two-drawer filing cabinet on each end. On it there is a postcard of Michael Angelo’s statue of David, leaning on the tree stump for spiritual support. Beside that is a picture by the famous photographer, Ansel Adams, which he presented to the Japanese people interned during WWII. It inspired them to have courage. And the usual mess of file folders, pens and pencils, notes to self, a desk phone, and a box of Kleenex.

When I’m not writing, I do volunteer work, teaching various skills like time management, or money management for the desperate. When I’m not doing that, I’m at the library getting audio books, or planning a trip, somewhere, sometime.

My favorite authors? I love Louise Penny, a brilliant mystery writer with a laser insight into human nature. Her detective fiction far outstrips the genre, going into psychological thriller more often. Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, John Grisham, Michael Connelly, and several others. To discover books to read, I listen to the CBC radio interviews with authors.

I am inspired every morning. If I’m in the middle of plotting a novel, that will do it. But, if not, breakfast excites me. Some days it’s a frozen mango shake with protein powder. More often it’s a simple egg with toast. I’m curious about most things, most of the time.
