A Little about the Author and How Virgil’s Story Came About

When I was nine years old I moved with my family from New Jersey to the foothills of the San Fernando Valley town of Chatsworth, California. There were three things that were magical to me: mountains, orange groves, and horses. I immediately traded in my ballet slippers for riding boots.

We lived near a private road, and on that private road there were ranches and horses. I started riding at a couple of rental places. I wanted a horse so bad I could taste it, but my father told me to get on my bicycle and ride up the private road, knock on doors and see if someone would let me exercise their horse. Believe it or not, I actually found someone that would let me ride their horse. I met a girl who kept her horse at the West Hills Hunt Club, and that’s how I got involved with fox hunting. The next 10 years I was up at the hunt club exercising horses and helping train and exercise the hounds.

Hold everything! I have to stop here and tell you how I feel about fox hunting now. I have been a vegetarian for 25 years and a vegan for the last 10 years. I am against any kind of hunting, any kind of animal testing, and anything that even slightly smacks of animal cruelty. That includes circuses, marine parks, and zoos. Honestly, it was NOT the hunting of the poor fox that I enjoyed. Actually, in California there are no foxes, so they hunt coyotes. In fact, I was only on a hunt twice, in the ten years I rode with them, that there was a kill. But for the few times that happened, it didn’t outweigh the rest of what fox hunting consisted of, although it does now, and it is absolutely wrong. It was everything that you are going to read about in Virgil the Hound, and what the rider in the story learns from Virgil.

Things change in a decade. I graduated from high school and got my first car which, as was appropriate, my father’s Mustang. I went to college and graduated from UCLA with a degree in English. I hold a teaching credential in English and Social Science. With my new freedom of having a car, I was lured to Thoroughbred horse racing.

About a year after we moved to California, my grandparents came out from New Jersey to visit. My father took us to Santa Anita Park. It was 1963, the year that Candy Spots won the Santa Derby, and I actually picked him to win! He also won the Preakness that year. I was entranced by the horses at the track. I vowed that I would one day be one of the pony-people that rode the saddle horse, which takes the thoroughbred and their jockey to the gate. I never really thought about it much after I started riding at the hunt club, but somehow I was lured back to the races and since I had a car, I would cut school and go to Santa Anita. I ended up surpassing my wildest dreams of being a pony-girl and became an exercise rider, exercising the racehorses at Santa Anita. I also became a racing journalist.

My life on the racetrack is another story. Another long story.

Getting back to Virgil, I actually wrote the poem “Virgil the Hound” when I was nine-years-old. In the years between then and now I have edited the poem, as well as edited the way I think.

Virgil’s story has become my way of life.
“…but enough about me.
Now let us begin our fabled story.

Back in time, we will travel for the start.
To the beginning, the logical part.”

Author Bio:
I loved storytelling and creating elaborate fiction in my head as a child. And I always dreamed of sharing these stories with people that I met. I just didn’t have the patience or the motivation to write it down.

That changed when I realized sitting in front of a computer, in a quiet space with nothing but your thoughts was addictive. I started writing and couldn’t stop. My fingers couldn’t keep up with my mind.

It took me years but now I realize writing is one of my passions.

A bit about me.

Canadian born, grew up in Toronto and went to York University for English Literature. Graduated then did a postgraduate in Public Relations. I realized I hadn’t seen the world and decided to move to Japan.
I have been living and working in Japan on and off for more than 10 years. Currently, I am an English teacher at Elementary and Junior High schools near Tokyo.
I have a dog and cat both named Maple( my cat is Kaede which is maple in Japanese) and I spend most of my time creating videos on YouTube, singing karaoke and sitting in my favorite cafe writing stories.

Author Bio:
Kathryn was originally a painter in oils but quickly changed to accounting and international finance after she discovered the artistic path of painting leads to a starving artist existence. To cement her ability to earn a living, she became a CPA and a CMA and worked for a multinational corporation, Johnson and Johnson, where she traveled extensively for two decades. After jetting to over 90 countries, her travels gave her the opportunity to fulfill another passion – to write fiction. Now she writes stories and novels inspired by Latin American cultures she experienced firsthand during her career as an international finance executive.

Author Bio:
Erol Rashit was born in London. He studied ecology at the University of Liverpool and obtained a PhD from the University of London for research into the effects of environmental fluctuations on species diversity. During a period as a photographic artist, he had several one-man shows, but these generated little in the way of income. Eventually, he resorted to paid employment, qualified as an accountant and for several years held the post of Chief Accountant at Imperial College. Having made enough money to fund his future (modest) requirements, he has withdrawn from the ‘rat race’ in order to concentrate on his main interest: techniques for examining the illusion of ‘the ghost in the machine’ and for tracing consciousness back to its true source.

I’m a storyteller. An overabundance of imagination and curiosity created a writer.

I have a degree in advertising design but after a few years being poor and overworked, I enjoyed a 25-year career in public relations for government and corporations. Born in a small town in Colorado, my ever-evolving and demanding career allowed me to live in and travel to many parts of this country, working for unique employers, meeting interesting, famous and diverse personalities. Now settled in West Texas, besides writing, I enjoy painting, photography and working on my ancestral history.

As Hemmingway said, “Any man’s life told truly, is a novel.” So, after a life filled with varied experiences, both career and personal, my writings are often more truth than fiction. Much of what is in my stories I went through and survived. Today, my desire as a fiction author is to share my stories with you, letting you too escape from reality and dare to dream. My books are about the human drama of life and death, desire and love, anger and loss. I take ordinary people and put them in extraordinary circumstances. Then I watch to see how they respond. I focus on how my characters learn to overcome the obstacles that life throws at them while going through personal changes and growth. I have learned what we expected our lives to be is not necessarily how they turn out. That’s not a bad thing. Life is full of more twists than a roller coaster, love is risky, death unexpected, and testing is hard, but we somehow make it through with hope, faith, love and lots of laughter to season the stew. David Gillespie moved to Hawaii as a teenager, where he attended public schools and graduated with a BBA and MBA from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Gillespie’s has had a varied career in Hawaii’s business community. As a consultant with a University of Hawaii program, he travelled to many Pacific Island nations.
