About The Food Bondage: Making a Case for the Human Diet

I normally trust experts. I go to the mechanic to fix my car and the doctor for medical advice. Why don’t I feel the same way about nutritionists? Because each will point me—with the same authority—to different diets. You reach a breaking point going from one diet to another, taking vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in different quantities, when you realize that none of it works. Then you say, Enough! I’m out! I had received my last super-nutrient order by mail, and I wouldn’t be ordering more. However, I must admit that I did stay on that crazy dietary treadmill for a while, until I realized that I was standing still.

Like many of us do, I continued searching for something that worked for much longer. When I’d had enough, I started imagining what kind of diet would be optimal for me. Of course, that would be the diet we’ve all evolved to consume. I figured that being as close as possible to that natural regime would provide me with peace of mind. While on it, I could tell myself this: If I get ill or still feel lousy while eating according to my natural diet, then it’s not my fault; it’s just the way it has to be. But, at least theoretically, I should function and feel my best while eating according to my evolutionary blueprint.

Now, look at all the diets out there. They are arbitrary. They tell you to eat according to a predetermined protein/fat/carbohydrate ratio or to avoid certain foods. I can’t imagine our Stone Age ancestors eating selectively. Unlike us, with our massive selection of foods, they were limited only to what was available, and when they found something nutritious enough to be eaten, it didn’t matter how much fat/protein/carbohydrate it contained.

Some alternative diets do claim to bring us closer to our early human nutrition; for example, regimes like paleo, carnivore, keto all have this claim made about them. However, again, they are restrictive. They are the result of simplistic thinking about the way we should be eating.

After this realization, I started looking closer at our ancestors’ environment and learned for myself the structure of their/our diet. When I finally did this, all of my dietary confusion instantly cleared up. Even the variety of eating regimes and the claims that they worked for some people some of the time made perfect sense. It was not these new diets that worked for them. It was the change itself that made them feel better. This explains the reason why none of them were working as well long term. When I tried to name the diet, I couldn’t come up with anything other than to call it what it truly is—the Human Diet.

Of course, my quest for the perfect diet is over. All my nutrients, superfoods, and even multi-vitamins are in the garbage. The only vitamin I take is vitamin D, and I will tell you why in the book.

I know that our nutritional standard is a mix of tradition and availability. However, I am still perplexed by the fact that something as simple as the natural human diet is not our gold standard.

In the book, I will convince you with logic and basic nutritional concepts that what I have found is indeed the optimal way of eating—the one and only Human Diet.

Gregory Stypko was born in Gdansk, Poland, and was privileged to witness firsthand the birth of the Solidarity movement in the city in 1980, led by Lech Wałęsa. During that period, Gregory was interned by the communist authorities as an untrustworthy citizen.
Following graduation from the Technical University of Gdansk with an MSEE degree, Gregory emigrated to the United States. There, he has worked as a hardware and software engineer for startups and established corporations in various engineering and managerial roles.
