Alec Mustafayev is a self published author from Rhode Island. He published his first book, Rebellious, at the age of 15. He has said that the struggles faced by characters in his books are usually expressions of his own frustrations in life. He was inspired to write his own books by authors like J.K Rowling, among others.

Life: Alec was born on August 6th, 2002 to Aydin and Natalie Mustafayev. He initially attended a private Christian school, but was kicked out after frequently misbehaving. He became an Atheist later in life. In his early years, he was diagnosed with ADHD. This led to him receiving a 504 plan in middle school. Alec says that this is what inspired his character Ms. Garcia. While in middle school, he preformed in many school plays, and at one point wanted to be an actor. During his first year of high school, he wrote a first draft of Rebellious, which eventually led him to changing his goals and becoming a writer. He currently attends Classical high school in Providence, Rhode Island. After being questioned, Alec confirmed that the abusive parents depicted in Rebellious were not based on his real life.

“We all have family problems, but my parents and Parker’s parents couldn’t be more different. I just thought ‘What could be worse than bullies at school? Bullies at home!’ and wrote that into the story.”

Rebellious is the first book written by Alec Mustafayev. It follows Parker, a teenager who attends the fictional Johnson high school in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The name of the school caused some confusion, as there is a similarly named Johnston high school also located in Pawtucket. Although the location of Johnson high school is never explicitly mentioned in the book, the names of the streets it is located nearby in the story imply that it is in place of Charles E Shea high school.
The book describes Johnson high school as being considered “the worst high school in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.” Parker is forced to go to this school by his parents after going to a protest against police brutality behind their backs. His parents lie to the school that Parker has a mental disorder as punishment. Due to this lie, Parker is given special help from Ms. Garcia, causing bullying from other students.
The book caused some shock for its depiction of minors in dangerous situations, such as fighting, using guns, police brutality, drug dealing, and addiction to the fictional drug megalómano. Alec has said that the political issues depicted in his book are not meant to reflect any similar issues in real life. This was likely said to stop any speculation that the police protests in his book are based on Black Lives Matter.
