I have been writing for a number of years but only made the decision to write and publish my first novel in 2018. The idea for my second novel, The Devil’s Hunger, came to me while working in a maximum security prison unit. I was watching a notorious serial killer go about his day to day routine and began wondering what would happen if he could break out and kill again, but then get back into jail undetected. It made for a very interesting story and I am looking forward to it’s sequel later this year.
I also love the thrill of roller coasters and adrenalin-fueled activities, as well as photography when I want to escape the hustle and bustle. Welcome to my story! When I was 16, I found out I have a form of Turner syndrome. Learning about
that diagnosis was like embarking on a journey that I never expected. At that point, I not only had to
continue navigating through high school but, needed to make some big decisions for myself.

I didn’t know what to expect and experienced a wide range of emotions. It was difficult to see how anything positive was going to come out of the new journey I was faced with. Twelve years after learning I have Turner syndrome, I saw some incredible growth within myself. Events that took place in my life starting in December 2017 inspired me to write everything down. My writing project quickly took off and the more it developed, the more I realized my story had a purpose.

I truly have been on a journey to empowerment and am ready to share my story with others. The journey has not always been easy but, through everything, I have become a stronger person and learned a lot. I’m extremely excited to finally be sharing this story. After all, it is time that it is told and: This is me! Don’t forget, life is a journey, not a destination.

Kelsey Smith was born in Englewood, Colorado on January 10, 1990. She is grateful to call the beautiful state of Colorado her home. MARIS maintains a tense-college relationship with SEBASTIAN in Virginia, often turning inward and neglecting his lover for the sake of his poetry and his pursuit to have it published. After long neglect and after Maris takes in a stray rabbit, Sebastian has had enough and confronts his abuser.

Sebastian must have a partner in this world, he relies on other’s for his well-being, so while scolding Maris for his neglect and disaffection, he demands that they adopt a child. He cannot rely solely on Maris any longer. Maris, furious, states his intention to perfect his work and his disgust with the notion of progeny: he resolves to probe into better psychiatric medication to improve his output; Sebastian withdrawals from the argument, resentful of having butted heads on an issue so central to his person.

After the explosive back-and-forth, Sebastian concocts a scheme to fulfill himself and his wish for a supportive underling: he plots to have Maris poisoned with a high dosage of psychiatric drugs and sell his poetry to fund his life with the deferred child, reveling in its irony and self-service. He convinces his uncle, Maris’ doctor, to increase his dosage by three.

Maris, however, does not die from the increased dosage: he begins suffering a rash of hallucinations. He envisions his poetry wilting into disinterest and the home he’d wanted to share with Sebastian, across the country in Los Angeles, being sold at auction. Frantic and disillusioned, he snatches up his belongings and the stray rabbit, now-named MARLOW, who, in his delusional state, converses with him and acts as a living projection of Maris’ circumstance and perspective, and flees, heading toward California.

After making several stops and shifting from one psychotic state to another, Maris and Marlow come to a rest at a hotel in Oklahoma. While resting, Maris begins to see Sebastian standing in the doorway, he seduces him and speaks with him about his regrets of fleeing, but Sebastian harbors on the notions of having a child and while he is asleep, in a fit of desperation, Maris bashes Sebastian’s covered head until blood runs. He escapes and comes to further regret fleeing and the suffering that it has caused.

In an act of repent and seeming redemption, Maris begins mutilating Marlow: shaving him, dressing him, Maris tries to turn Marlow into a child, in an attempt to right the wrong of denying Sebastian his child and of killing him. Marlow dies, and Maris resigns himself to an asylum, where he experiences electro-shock therapy repeatedly.

On discovery that Maris has been poisoned by his prescription, a callous doctor and his assistant, avoiding all chance of incrimination due to their own misdeeds, refill Maris’ prescription and release him to his closest guardian: Sebastian.

Seeing Sebastian and realizing that he hadn’t killed Sebastian, though unsure of who he had injured, Maris finds solemn relief.

They spend a day at a Californian beach, inspecting one another. Sebastian, seeing Maris in such poor shape and hysterical, expresses empathy for Maris having fled; Maris, in reaction to this kindness, is increasingly distraught knowing that he had been willing to kill the man that he loved for his work. Sebastian resolves to provoke Maris to commit suicide, to end his misery and to begin his new life with a child; Maris decides to kill himself out of pity and of love for Sebastian.

***MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!***

Maris crashes his vehicle into a guard-rail, deeply wounding himself. He hovels to the bent rail and opens his undersides on it shape edge. He crawls back to the vehicle to retrieve the manuscript of his work to offer him some comfort in his last moments. Sebastian, instead, retrieves them, having rode behind Maris out of fear of injury to the manuscript.

Maris dies, hallucinating that he may resurrect and avenge this wrongdoing.
Sebastian opens the manuscript and begins reading it. The poetry and prose begins with indescribable beauty and slowly fades into muttering gibberish as Maris had progressed into insanity; Sebastian hears sirens as aid comes to Maris, who he knows is already dead. Knowing he will be punished and that his child’s life has been aborted, he cuts his arms open and begins bleeding to death. He fades softly, reconciling his body with that of Maris’ and his child’s.
