Q: Who is MedSci Missions aimed at?

A: It wasn’t aimed at anyone, it’s a live missile that will land where it will. There are a lot of big words, but no graphic violence or explicit sexual content. In a nutshell, I’d rate it PG, especially good for adults and teens who enjoy a bit of technobabble and brain work or who don’t mind skimming over it to get to the story .

Q: Earth and Beyond is called #1; is the novel a cliff-hanger?

A: No, the immediate conflicts and dangers in the novel are resolved. There is a long-term goal to cure Earth’s pandemic, and some mysteries and character threads that go on for a long time, but each novel or story will have a sense of completion.

Q: Why are there pictures in the book? Don’t pictures in a book mean it’s for a young audience?

A: Basically, I love the pictures and I had them available because this property was conceived of as a film project. So, I added them into the novel as a bonus, expecting lovers of space exploration shows and comics to appreciate them. Formatting them for the eBook was a headache, so I hope I’m correct.

Q: If this was supposed to be in film format, why is it a novel?

A: It still might be a film project. When the company shopping the existing script went down, I put a film version on hold and got back to novel writing. It seemed the most expedient way of getting the material that was developed over a decade out there. Plus, I love novel-writing format. Now that additions and changes have been made for the novel, the script needs to be revamped before decisions can be made about what to do with it.

Q: If you love novel writing why did you make a film/tv script?

A: I was happily working on a bio-tech spy thriller novel when I got up-in-arms over the pending cancellation of Star Trek: Enterprise. I joined “Save Enterprise,” and that led me to peruse the forum of “Sci-Fi Studios.com” I put out an idea stemming from my passion for both medical thrillers such as those by Dr. Robin Cook, and space dramas, hoping someone would make the scenario and character profiles I posted into a show. People seemed to expect me to develop and write the idea, so I did, with happy input from inventive Trek fans.

Q: So is this a Star Trek clone?

A: No. While I have a passion for that universe and others, I wanted to do something different. There is an obvious similarity; a spaceship having a mission beyond Earth. From there, things diverge. Trek ships explore all over space, for many different reasons. The Medship Chiron will spend a lot of time near one particular planet, and we will get to know the inhabitants of it very well as the long-term plot progresses. The atmosphere on-board is different. The Captain is in charge of the crew, but not the mission specialists. The Ambassador in charge of the mission scoured the Earth for the top civilian scientist to carry it out. The geniuses who can solve the problem must be protected at all cost and their work facilitated. The motive for making alien contact isn’t so noble as in ST, the questions asked are more along the lines of, “Could these people help us with our problem?”

Q: Did you submit the manuscript to traditional publishers?

A: No, for multiple reasons. Research I did indicated self-publishing is the way of the future, and MedMissions is all about being in the future. By maintaining ownership and control I can involve talent in further developments as seems appropriate. Also, signing with an outside publisher could be a legal headache given that people from around the world read bits of future plots or contributed ideas before development was closed to the general public.

Q: Have you written other novels?

A: I have a two-hundred-thousand-word fantasy novel on my hard drive, written before my children, who are off at U now, arrived. I don’t think I even sent it out. It’s a bother sending things out, so I started a thriller instead. Now I’m more mature, and will re-visit and publish it. I also have a short, unpublished Star Trek novel I learned the craft from, with help from the Ottawa Lyngarde writing group. Parts of it are being converted into the next MedMissions book, though of course I have to excise a lot of material very specific to the ST characters and setting.

Q: How much is written for MedMissions?

A: The first Novel, Earth and Beyond: MedSci Missions 1 is available for purchase now. A ten- thousand-word glossary of terms can be read for free on the main website, and probably other places before too long. A Ship Guide and Medical Compendium are written but I’d like to get them illustrated before the official release. There’s a script for a six-page promo comic, as well as a twenty-two page one, MedMissions: Vol.1 Metasapian Menace; Issue One: The Science of Subterfuge, that will hopefully one day kick off a comic series. Again, Illustrations are needed. Novel two is in progress, following the plot line worked out for the equivalent of four seasons of a TV show.

Q: Are you trying to be the new Gene Roddenberry?

A: Oh, gosh, no. He was one of a kind, the icon of outer space. I’m ever thankful for the excitement he brought to me that led to my own adventures.

Q: What are the future plans for MedSci Missions?

A: To go further into the future with it. The stories will continue. Certainly in novel format, and hopefully in others. I’m open to the idea of having short story anthologies with multiple authors in the future. I’d love to see what other people came up with in the MedMissions universe.

HS PAISLEY GREW UP IN TORONTO, CANADA. At the age of 18, she left her hometown to play basketball for the University of Ottawa. Paisley graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts and three All-Canadian awards to her name.

After university Paisley played one year of professional basketball in Germany. While there, she began to write her first full length novel. In the fall of 2014, Paisley hung up her basketball shoes and went back to school. She spent a year at college before deciding to focus on her writing.

In 2015, Paisley realized she wasn’t done with basketball and started training again. In the fall of 2016, she signed her second professional contract, this time in France. Basketball gave Paisley the freedom to write nearly full time. Now she is completing her fourth pro season while working on the second instalment of the Lochlan Ellyll Series.

Author Bio:
Born in Cuba and raised in Central America, R.J. Pineiro spent his early years in the midst of civil wars before he migrated to the United States in the late 1970s, first to Florida, where he attended Florida Air Academy in Melbourne. There, RJ earned his pilot’s license and high school diploma in 1979, before heading to Louisiana for college.

R.J. earned a degree in electrical engineering from Louisiana State University in 1983 and joined the high-tech industry in Austin Texas, where he worked in computer chip design, test, and manufacturing, before retiring in 2012 to focus full time on his books.

In addition to his high-tech work, R.J. added an instrument rating to his private pilot privileges. He also holds a black belt in martial arts, is a firearms enthusiast, and enjoys the privileges of his Open Water SCUBA certification.

In the late 1980s R.J. began studying to become a novelist. As he read every chance he had, from classical literature to contemporary novels, R.J.’s love of storytelling became uncontrollable. Using an aging personal computer, he decided to start his writing career. Once he began, he never stopped.

His first published work, SIEGE OF LIGHTNING, a novel about a sabotaged space shuttle, was released by Berkley/Putnam in May of 1993. His second novel, ULTIMATUM, about a second Gulf War scenario, was released the following year, 1994, by Forge Books, which went on to publish R.J.’s next 12 novels over the following 13 years.

In 2015, R.J. teamed up with TV News military analyst Colonel David Hunt to kick off the “Hunter Stark Book Series.” The first book in the series, WITHOUT MERCY, about ISIS gaining acquiring nuclear weapons, was released on 3.7.17. The second book, WITHOUT FEAR, about the war in Afghanistan, was released on 8.7.18

​In 2017, R.J. also teamed up with New York Times bestselling author Joe Weber. The result is ASHES OF VICTORY, a novel of global terrorism and international conflict released by Ignition Books on 9.3.18
