Black & White by Erol Rashit

About Black & White by Erol Rashit

Confronting racism, transcending duality: Black & White is a metaphysical Western, set in modern times and incorporating more than a touch of the East.

A young white man, Igor, adopts as his mother a middle aged black woman, Sylvia, after meeting her in a café, each having come from the nearby cemetery. The deeper he delves into the death of Sylvia’s son, the more embroiled Igor becomes in the activities of Los Angeles criminals, and the more he becomes the focus of a police investigation himself. If this were an old Western movie, the heroes and villains might almost be wearing white and black hats respectively. Then again, the hats could be misleading: Igor’s appetite for polyamorous relationships is not exactly respectable; nor is his willingness to match the brutality of those he seeks to outwit as he immerses himself within a tangled web of deception and violence.

‘He who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, he is wise among men.’
—Bhagavad Gita IV, 18

Author Bio:
Erol Rashit was born in London. He studied ecology at the University of Liverpool and obtained a PhD from the University of London for research into the effects of environmental fluctuations on species diversity. During a period as a photographic artist, he had several one-man shows, but these generated little in the way of income. Eventually, he resorted to paid employment, qualified as an accountant and for several years held the post of Chief Accountant at Imperial College. Having made enough money to fund his future (modest) requirements, he has withdrawn from the ‘rat race’ in order to concentrate on his main interest: techniques for examining the illusion of ‘the ghost in the machine’ and for tracing consciousness back to its true source.

Mr. Pizza

About Mr. Pizza

Most people make at least one really harebrained decision in their life. Tony Piza is no exception.

It’s 1973, and Tony decides he needs a carefree year off after college—with pay. So, to the shock of his tight-knit family and closest friends, he postpones law school and smooth-talks his way into a job teaching sixth grade at a Catholic school in Staten Island, N. Y. A paid vacation if ever there was one! Yeah, right.

Say hi to the Moby Dick of miscalculations. His pathetic effort is making him look bad, especially compared to the other sixth-grade instructor, Sister Theresa, an energetic young nun with a disposition that could have turned Attila the Hun into a daisy-picking philanthropist. It’s also crimping his efforts to enchant Colleen O’Brien, a stunning, straight-talking teacher who sees right through him. And, even worse, he’s starting to feel guilty about shortchanging his students, especially after learning about the issues some of them are dealing with.

So he shifts gears, engaging the kids with his irreverent humor and theatrical flair. But sometimes you pay a price for pushing the envelope. His offbeat style antagonizes the powers that be: the alpha-male president of the school board, and the pastor who’s more interested in single malt scotch than saving souls.

A showdown seems inevitable. Whether he can survive it—well, that’s something else.

Bio – J. F. Pandolfi

J. F. Pandolfi went to Fordham University as an undergrad, then taught at a Catholic elementary school before attending Fordham Law School.

Practicing law certainly had its moments, but to call it “utter euphoria”—well, that was a stretch. Plus, the voices that had taken up residency in his head (rent-free, the deadbeats) kept insisting that he share his writing with the world. An award for his flash fiction piece, “Psychology for Dummies”, convinced him that the voices might be on to something. And so he called upon his fond memories as a teacher, which served as a backdrop to his debut novel, “Mr. Pizza”.

J. F. also briefly believed he had won the New York City Marathon. Alas, it turned out to be a dream, apparently brought on by an acute case of restless leg syndrome.

A staunch supporter of the fight to eradicate adult illiteracy, J. F. was accorded a Special Recognition in Literacy Award for his efforts.

The Dying Days of Segregation in Australia: Case Study Yarrabah by Barbara Miller

About The Dying Days of Segregation in Australia: Case Study Yarrabah by Barbara Miller

FREE ON AMAZON TILL 12PM 20 AUGUST PACIFIC TIME THEN 99C FOR 7 DAYS
Did the deep north of Australia experience racism, discrimination and segregation? Yes. But it was different from the deep south of the USA. A system similar to South African apartheid existed on Aboriginal reserves like Yarrabah in Queensland till as recently as 1984. This book, The Dying Days of Segregation in Australia: Case Study Yarrabah, is unique in that Australian Aborigines themselves tell their story of living under legal discrimination on reserves and discusses their aspirations for self-determination, local government and land rights.
Human rights abuses of the law they lived under are discussed in detail as well as government policy that promoted racial discrimination. Race relations are examined. The book is a political history from contact till now between white and black Australia and puts Yarrabah in a national context.
Despite past racism and discrimination and some lingering examples of this in government policy and society’s attitudes, Yarrabah today is a thriving community run by an Aboriginal Council. It still has some of the hallmarks of a disadvantaged population like lack of housing and health issues.
Yarrabah is no longer a reserve. It is still a discrete community but its residents do not experience segregation and can come and go freely and have the same human rights as other Australians. For those interested in politics and government and public affairs policy in relation to ethnic studies or minority studies, this is the book to read. History buffs and legal eagles will find it fascinating. The author has a long term and close association with Yarrabah.

Author Bio:
I remember being 10 years old, sitting inside a tiny bedroom closet with the door shut, pen and paper in hand, anxiously writing my first fiction story to the dim glow of a plug-in nightlight. A couple completed pages seemed like a full-length book. Small office, small story, small boy–everything small except the dream inside me.

Since then, life has led me down many adventurous roads…from obtaining a BS in sociology at Brigham Young University, joining a corporate marketing team, to becoming a husband and father of two girls. All the while, my childhood dream inside the closet was always knocking to get out. And finally, I’ve opened the door with my debut novel RED LASHERS.

This story was inspired by many life experiences: the emotional heartbeat comes from the grief of losing a loved one to death and the fatigue of witnessing so much cruelty in the world; the suspense from influencers such as the Hardy Boys and Goosebumps (my childhood reading); the originality from a dream I had. A literal one. Yeah, I’m a dreamer. Sometimes I wake up thinking “hmm, I should write that down.”

Other dreams I enjoy: family; friends; chips and salsa; a good movie; a great view; warm sunshine on the skin; and cold ice in my cherry coke. Living the dream. I hope you live yours.
