Jake takes them to a rental storage complex, where they can bandage their wounds and regroup. Inside the complex they are fend off and kill a pair of gingers that have wandered inside. They spend the night in a storage unit and realize Jake’s gunshot wound requires medical treatment they are unable to give. Jake decides to find EARL, his estranged partner from the police force, who has the necessary medical supplies. Sam initially resists, wanting to find Rachel instead, but relents when Jake points out that Sam owes him for fending off the gang members.
The next morning, they drive to Earl’s hideout only to be ambushed on the road. With their SUV totaled, Sam and Jake get pinned down by another group of survivors and in desperation call for help. Hearing their calls, Earl comes to the rescue and covers their retreat to an underground bunker. Once safely inside, they tend to Jake’s gunshot wound and spend the night. Having repaid his debt to Jake, Sam tells of his plan to rescue Rachel. Jake and Earl recognize the gang from their days on the police force and agree to come along. They load up and take Earl’s old police car to the gas station where Rachel was shot.
With Earl covering him, Sam meets with the gang is arranging for Rachel’s release when a firefight breaks out. They end up killing the gang members and freeing Rachel, but Jake is shot again compounding his originally injury. To make matters worse, the noise of the fight has attracted all of the gingers in the area. The four of them run for Earl’s car, but Jake’s injuries slow them down. Recognizing this, Jake stay behind to hold the gingers off and buy them time to escape.
A month later, Rachel has recovered from her gunshot wound, but morale is low after Jake’s death. Rachel determines that life must have a purpose greater than mere survival, and resolves to share her beliefs with Sam.

Author Bio:
Darren DeSmeaux grew up in a middle-class suburb of Minneapolis with his older brother and sister. In his youth, he led an active life, often times outdoors, playing most any sport he could. Eventually, his passion turned to hockey, where he spent countless hours playing games or practicing on the outdoor Minnesota rinks.

He played high school hockey, then Junior A hockey, and went on to play Division-III hockey after that. He was voted All-American as a defenseman three of his four years in college, then played a year of minor league hockey after graduation. Once his short flirtation with the professional hockey ranks ran its course, he retired and moved back to Minnesota.

Darren’s early retirement was short-lived, as he began his business career shortly thereafter as an inside sales representative. After six months of phone sales, he moved into finance, where he has filled various roles for about the past 9 years. He received his Master of Business Administration degree while he worked full-time.

His first role in finance was working for a medical device manufacturing company, and after two years, he took a different role at a large grocery retailer and distributor. Two years later, he was presented with a great opportunity to work for a small, rapidly-growing telecommunications retailer that had just relocated from another state. Darren spent the next five years working directly for the CFO and hand-in-hand with the private equity ownership group.

The company grew from just over 100 retail locations to over 1,200 locations in a span of four years, which included fourteen separate acquisitions and a large merger. The entire company was then sold to another much larger private equity group. Darren DeSmeaux left the company in early 2017 to take a career break and pursue a freelance writing career, although he remained on as a consultant through October 2017 while the company transitioned its headquarters away from Minnesota.

Darren has written two books (only one of which has been published) and is currently working on two more; Bipolar Man – Anxiety Andy and the Investment, which is the second installment of the ongoing comic series, and The Adventures of Baby Doll and Chi-Chi, a children’s book based on the real-life adventures of his two daughters.

He is an agreeable, sarcastic, and analytical person who is very easy to get along with and is amongst the most honest and genuine a person there is. He loves sports, especially golfing and hockey, and he enjoys many various activities such as writing, SCUBA diving, being a father, watching movies, and reading about science and outer space.

He has also recently tried to become involved in helping fight against the stigma of mental health ailments. Along with that, Darren has expanded his knowledge of consciousness, reality, existence, Buddhism, meditation, spiritual awakenings, the afterlife, and many more somewhat related topics. Misheard Lyrics: What if everything you heard was wrong? is about the ways we misunderstand the world. It is an irreverent and often hilarious novel about misheard lyrics, religion, messiahs, friendship, and the nature of the universe. Each chapter title involves a misheard song lyric and many are discussed in context throughout the novel.

Charles, an agnostic newspaper columnist and struggling novelist, and Chip, a jovial minister who swears like a sailor and runs a Haitian United Methodist church in Miami, discuss Charles’ various attempts at writing a book about messiahs. The pair’s wide-ranging topics include the origin of religion, faith vs. science, dogma, evil, magic, existentialism, the end of the world, the meaning of swearing, masturbation, astrophysics’ discoveries about the Universe, post-traumatic stress disorder, gay marriage, and whether we’re all really just living in a computer simulation.

The book alternates Charles’ attempts at starting his book with the pair’s discussions about the book and religion in general as well as biographical flashbacks from Charles’ life that feature other characters. Edie was Charles’ girlfriend back in 1975. PSTD from her tour in Viet Nam as a photographer for Look magazine complicated their relationship. Steve was Charles’ piano virtuoso friend reduced to bankruptcy and working odd jobs. Poet Allen Ginsberg also appears as Charles’ mentor.

I started writing in third grade (mostly stories about mowing down Nazis) and was editor of my sixth grade newsletter. Years later I went to graduate school for poetry writing, studied under Allen Ginsberg, and produced a poetry magazine, Plainspeak. Subsequently I wrote two cancer newsletters for Duke University Cancer Center and software manuals and training programs for The Nielsen Company.

Fascinated by the way people misinterpret lyrics and the messages of song, I started my first novel, Misheard Lyrics in 1989, believe it or not, and chipped away at it infrequently until 2015. I decided at that time that I should take the advice I had given to a friend who “couldn’t find time” to write his own novel: You’ve got time. You’ve got a half an hour a day. Just write something. So I did. With the help of that friend, I managed to finish Misheard Lyrics on Christmas Day, 2017.

I have contributed technical chapters about the Internet to two widely-published books and several national magazines. I have also written numerous white papers and seven non-fiction books about social media and social selling. But I enjoy fiction writing the most.

I live in the Twin Cities with my wife.
