The Voice of Phoenix by Zylkia Ivette Swensen
The Voice of Phoenix by Zylkia Ivette Swensen
The Voice of a Phoenix is one of the books that I’ve read, and I can truly agree that the content matches the title. I especially love that Zylkia did not just jump into the book and make it just about depression; she made us feel her feelings and carried us along from her childhood to every one of her relationships to the birth of each of her children. I love it! I love how detailed and honest she is, and through the book, from when I got to chapter six, my emotions got more intense. The way Nana treated Zylkia and her kids almost made me shed a tear; no mother deserves to go through the pain of someone hurting their children or living in a motel or women’s shelter just because they need to get away from their abusive husband, and I was really hoping she found a man who would be her soul mate and love her completely, which she did at the end when she got married to Ken, her best friend and husband. Losing her children was her greatest fear from the moment she was about to lose Kian when he was thirty days old in chapter six, and any woman will understand why she nearly lost her sanity when Andy, who wasn’t her biological child, was taken away from her in chapter ten, and how Andrew used her love for Andy to get the house from Zylkia. When I finally got to the end of the book, I was truly happy because she found happiness in her life, got married to her soulmate, and I loved how she still gave marriage a chance the fourth time because many women won’t want to marry after having those bad experiences with Javier and Andrew. I also loved how she was with all of her children at the end, excluding Andy. I love how she raised her and Ken’s children and how she’s working at Party City, where every day is a party, and you can be sure she’s truly happy. She ended the book with positivity and advice for the readers on why they shouldn’t give up on themselves. Zylkia the phoenix rose from her ashes, and the book couldn’t have ended any better.
There have been numerous times when I had the choice of taking my life. I have known pain. But I also know love, hope, and life. If you are in a similar situation, please consider reading my book. I know it will help you because it helped me. Writing this book save my life and I hope it can help you too.Suicide is something that is not talked about enough. Eve’s Covering
About Eve’s Covering
Eve is troubled by the mysterious circumstances surrounding her cousin Alice’s death, but the police won’t take her seriously. When Eve’s family becomes entangled with a religious cult, she struggles with the ideas and leaders who now assume control over her life. But when her rebellion threatens the safety of her family, she gives in and joins the cult’s mission: an orphanage in the Soviet Union. Or, at least that’s the mission on the surface. When Eve discovers the orphanage is a cover for something much more sinister, she sets out to rescue her friends who’ve slowly disappeared, one at a time. The trouble is–she knows too much. If she’s caught, it will be the end of them all.
Eve’s Covering is inspired by the author’s personal experience of life in a cult. Written as fiction, much of Eve’s life is based on her own move to northern Michigan, where her family joined a cult, costing her her friends, family, and everything she held dear. When strange, supernatural things began to happen, she escaped, and ended up homeless in a foreign country before making her way home–only to find it gone. This is her story. This is Eve’s story. A story of escape and of God’s covering of protection: Eve’s Covering.

The Negotiator’s Cross
About The Negotiator’s Cross
The unlikely protagonist of this new novel is Father Ishmael, a seemingly ordinary Catholic priest from Texas, who has come to Mexico City to minister to his flock, but who has left behind a past full of secrets. One day, Father Ishmael’s world turns upside down, as one of his parishioners has disappeared. Fearing that he’s the victim of kidnapping by a cartel, local authorities draw Father Ishmael – as a hostage negotiator- into a web of complex, dangerous relationships, where nothing is as it appears. Set in the 1990s in a variety of settings, ranging from Texas, Mexico, Cuba, Bosnia, Russia, and Austria, Father Ishmael’s story takes one through a tale of diplomacy, espionage, kidnap, genocide, and murder across three continents. The characters – from Father Ishmael, a priest and hostage negotiator, to a Mexican-American businessman, a traumatized Russian Spetsnaz veteran, a brilliant GRU General, a morbidly obese CIA officer, an elderly cartel leader, and a legendary deep-cover Mossad operative – set the novel’s pace and tone. In it, Father Ishmael takes readers on a singular journey of drama, intrigue, loss, and faith.
“A captivating crime story that takes the reader on a world tour of late twentieth century history and geopolitics. The plot dives into the hidden world of espionage and subterfuge, in which Kenneth Dekleva’s Father Ishmael character brings to mind memories of John le Carré’s George Smiley and Charles McCarry’s Paul Christopher. A reading adventure!”
Daniel Levin, author of Proof of Life: Twenty Days on the Hunt for a Missing Person in the Middle East
“Kenneth Dekleva’s The Negotiator’s Cross is the magical story of Father Ishmael, a priest with a dark past, who finds himself on a journey where his faith and faithlessness are tested by gangsters and spies in Russia and Mexico. The story speaks to the emotional wisdom of listening to one’s heart while moving through a dangerous and uncertain world. Adventure, intrigue, and betrayal play out on a broad canvas in this elegantly written debut novel.”

Love, Heartbreak and The End of You. by Astone Jackson
Love, Heartbreak and The End of You. by Astone Jackson
This book of words is half of it. This is not only for me but for strangers and people who feel and never forget. For the past two years I’ve read poetry from my past. Open conversation with a version of myself from long ago. The version of myself who let a guy cheat but promise forever. The girl who broke my heart. To a kid I will never know and a best friend who went astray. Basically what I am saying is in this time I got to see who I was and all the parts I never laid to rest. So…these words and your name in here are a summoning. Letters on a Ouija board and reading them is a seance with the once silent ghosts that haunted me. Well, here’s your funeral. Thank you for coming.

The Legend Is Born by Gerald R Knight
The Legend Is Born by Gerald R Knight
This faraway, pre-contact story begins with Helkena, a young, still untattooed girl enduring a typhoon crashing over the only island she has ever known. Her home is Wōtto, one of the dry, windswept atolls of the northern Marshall Islands. The newborn infant Ḷainjin has just been entrusted to her care by his mother, who has sailed her fleet of proas into the open ocean to save them from certain destruction.
Helkena, having barely survived the storm, must now travel to Naṃdik, a wet atoll in the southern rain belt of the Rālik Chain. As Ḷainjin’s surrogate mother, she will sail with the infant by outrigger canoe in the company of his maternal grandfathers. These kind men had recently helped the Wōtto Islanders overcome the terrible drought that typically follows a typhoon. With the trade-wind season approaching, it’s soon time to complete their voyage. The grandfathers begin teaching
Helkena the traditional navigational arts along the way.
Her goal is to get her tattoos on Naṃdik and, in time, to find a man there to take home to Wōtto. But will she entice a man from the lush south to her barren desert island?
Far from being a simple story, this colorful, romantic tale presents a surprising background to the lovemaking culture of the Marshall Islands. This is a free introduction to the early years of young Ḷainjin, the hero of the Legends of Ḷainjin historical literary fiction series

Money Changers and False Profits: A Suspense Thriller
About Money Changers and False Profits: A Suspense Thriller
“Like the man seated across from him,
the one thing the detective hated more than anything else was a liar,
especially among his colleagues.
Yet, here he sat,
on the verge of telling the biggest lie he’d ever told in his life.
Lying to the D.A. was, in his mind, a horrible situation.
Dragging his supervisor into this deception was even worse…”

in a hidden world where religion, faith, diplomacy and politics are intertwined
through a scandalous relationship between the Vatican and her bank, the
American and Italian Mafia and the Propaganda Due (P2) Masons.
Based on true historical events, this story is not short on debauchery, greed,
money laundering, lust for power, corruption, collusion and murder.

My Journey…so far…
I suppose it was inevitable that I finally became a writer. Growing up, I was surrounded by the constant tap tap tap ding of my grandmother's manual typewriter as she constantly worked on a myriad of writing projects.
I grew up just south of Modesto, California, and graduated from Ceres High School. During my days of study at Modesto Junior College I developed an interest in psychology when I began working in a locked mental facility. In 1988 I began my 20 year career with the Army Reserves where I served as an Armorer, Drill Sergeant, and Combat Medic Instructor.
After earning my AA from Modesto Junior College, I went on to study at Sonoma State University where I earned my BA in Psychology with distinction, and did Post-Graduate studies in Neurobiology. During my post graduate days I worked at the San Francisco VA Medical Center at Ft Miley where I worked in a schizophrenia research lab.
Following my graduate work, I went on to work in the medical field as an Obstetrics Technician at a local hospital.
Today I make my home just outside of Modesto, California with my two sons, daughter two dogs and cat. I still try to find time to serve as a docent at Columbia State Historic Park in the Sierra foothills east of Modesto.
My Work
I find inspiration everywhere, especially in the lesser known chapters of historical events. I feel compelled to bring these interesting, hidden historical gems back to life. Our greatest lessons in life and as a society come from the successes and failures of those who came before us.

Unlike Bern, she has vivid and intense memories of her childhood and of her parents, but her shyness, insecurity, and reclusive existence prevent her from experiencing any new events that could become new memories. It is only when her father’s best friend is murdered that Anna steps out of her rigid life. His murder seems to involve a secret government program on memory engineering that Anna’s father had headed. Anna solicits Bern’s help in solving the mystery of the murder, and in doing so, discovers a mystery about herself that her father has kept secret all her life.

Thoroughly by Ormond Ferraris with Charl Pretorius
About Thoroughly by Ormond Ferraris with Charl Pretorius
South African horseracing has a rich oral history replete with anecdotes covering the excitement and salacious details of what happened on the thoroughbred scene. But over the last few decades very little of worth has been captured as a written record for posterity.
In a nick of time “Thoroughly!” fills that void. Trainer Ormond Ferraris is a true legend of the turf with an illustrious career spanning seventy years. He is practically the last of the surviving doyens with the experience, reach and gravitas to make sense of such a vast sweep of SA’s racing history.
A rare bounty of insights is contained in these chapters as Ferraris recalls first hand, in typical no-holds-barred style, the horses, events and personalities that shaped his life in racing.
Old time racegoers will relish his reveals of racing scandals and fallouts with powerful owners.
Punters will glean pearls of wisdom as the sage recount’s tales of gambling derring-do, of spectacular betting coups that connected – or went horribly awry.
Aspirant trainers will better understand the nuanced art of getting horses super-fit and primed to compete.
Pedigree boffins can delve into the breeding archives, tapping into Ferraris’ enduring knowledge, to recognise how famously successful SA bloodlines were formed.
And buyers searching for that elusive diamond in the rough can learn from a master horseman about the conformation attributes to look for in an equine athlete.
“Thoroughly!” is a fitting collaboration between the usually taciturn Ferraris, into his 90’s and now willing to share a lifetime of accumulated knowledge; and intrepid journalist Charl Pretorius – never one to shy away from controversy nor averse to dealing with complex characters.
This book remembers a time when the thoroughbred was at the very heart of this great game; jockeys and scheming trainers had to use their wits to survive; and the monopoly that racing had on gambling propelled it into a golden era that may never be seen again.
Multiple factors have since contributed to a steep erosion in racings fortunes, all noted, indeed lamented in this straight-shooting chronicle.
Ormond Ferraris is one of SA’s greatest trainers with a record that withstands even the most critical scrutiny. The fact that people who worked with him (Mike de Kock, son David Ferraris, Mike Clements) have gone on to thrive in their careers around the world is testimony to his training methods and staunch life principles.
“Thoroughly!” is no self-indulgent memoir. Instead, it is an honest, at times cutting account of inspiring or deeply flawed characters and remarkable equine champions in SA, an alternatively magnificent and maddening country constantly riven by political and economic challenges. All of which makes it a compelling, can’t-put-down read – and a valuable literary resource for future generations.

Enlightenment, A Chance Encounter by M.G. Hawking
About Enlightenment, A Chance Encounter by M.G. Hawking
Free on Amazon November 7th thru November 11th, always Free on Kindle Unlimited. Explore one of the great mysteries of Life: Enlightenment … what is it? Deep in the immense wilderness of the Great Range of the Himalaya, explorer M.G. Hawking has a personal encounter that sheds light on this intriguing question. In a tiny village surrounded by towering ice peaks, he has an experience that illuminates the deepest mystical secrets of conscious awareness and the true nature of the “reality” of the world around us, many of which mirror the profound discoveries of quantum physics.
“Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real.” —Niels Bohr, Nobel Laureate
“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” —Albert Einstein, Nobel Laureate
“Consciousness cannot be accounted for in physical terms, for consciousness is absolutely fundamental. Quantum physics reveals a basic oneness of the universe. Multiplicity is only apparent; in truth, there is only one mind.” —Erwin Schrödinger, Nobel Laureate
“Quantum physics provides a modern version of ancient spirituality. In a universe made out of energy, everything is entangled; everything is one.” —Bruce Lipton, Ph.D.
These profound concepts have been expressed as well by Eastern mystics and sages throughout the millennia, the philosophy of one mind, of the one-consciousness present in all things. Could the experience of enlightenment be the direct experience of this one mind? If so, what does it reveal?

Big Flame and Little Buck
About Big Flame and Little Buck
What do you do when someone you love is diagnosed with a debilitating mental illness? You can ask Emeline Bates, whose favorite aunt was taken from her home in France in the 1890’s. Or Clemens Bates, her son, whose brother Truman was sent to the Vermont Asylum for the Insane in 1932.
Truman Bates was heading for a career in the Vermont granite industry until he began to hear, feel, and see things that no one else could. He was eventually treated for a newly labeled illness: schizophrenia. Decades later, his nephew Pat Bates was a typical senior of the Class of 1984. It was then that Pat’s unlikely best friend, Dante Zuckerman, began to seriously worry that the depression Pat fell into that year would lead him to a life like Uncle Tru’s.
While there is no one way for a family to navigate their way through the complexities of mental illness, how they do so is greatly influenced by both the time and place in which it occurs. Equally significant are the friends and community who provide the support needed for a transition to a new normal.

Author Bio:
Why Big Flame and Little Buck? JJ Holbert worked in the mental health field in the 1990's. It was her first real job and she loved her position title, Psychosocial Rehabilitation Counselor, because it had so many syllables. She worked in a day treatment program in which she supported job development and training for adults with mental illness. She could be found more often than not driving the agency van around with clients on their way to pick up recycling, mow lawns, or staff a soup kitchen. In the way that only working side-by-side can, there developed a camaraderie and mutual respect that helped her grow as a person. She can only hope she had as positive an influence on her clients as they had on her. This novel is written in honor of them.

WELCOME HOME TO THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS!
Sleigh Bells Ring is a heartwarming and inspirational holiday cowboy Christmas romance filled with second chances, holiday traditions, the reuniting of best friends, and the magical promise of love during the holiday season.
There’s no love story as beautiful as those at Christmas, so pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate and indulge in a classic romance that unleashes the magic of Christmas and the true meaning of the season. This clean, wholesome Western romance will take you back to bygone days when holiday traditions were deeply rooted institutions, and when love could heal all wounds.
Returning to her family’s Montana ranch after a ten-year absence, Jordyn Dunaway pitches in to help her Mother create the special holiday magic for which the family ranch is renowned. But when she discovers that her best friend growing up—the man she has never forgotten—is employed as a ranch hand, the holiday season turns into something she never imagined.
Chad Devlin was falling into a deep abyss after leaving the military as a result of a traumatic brain injury. When his old employer invited him back as a ranch hand he found himself recovering both physically and mentally…that is until he was blindsided by the return of the ranch owner’s daughter after a ten-year absence.
The rocky relationship of the former best friends takes a back seat as the future of the family-owned ranch becomes threatened. If Jordyn and Chad don’t put their painful pasts behind them, they might lose the ranch they both call home. Can misunderstandings, mistrust, and lost years be forgotten when the magic of Christmas is in the air?
Find out with the help of beautiful vistas, warm bonfires, and the magical meaning of a special sleigh bell that ties both Jordyn and Chad to the past—and the future.
