Primitive Passions, a novel of life on the border between of 17th-Century New York and New France, is the story of Sean O’Cathail, a young Irishman who deserts the Royal Navy by jumping ship in New York Harbor in 1681. On the run from the authorities, O’Cathail finds his way to Albany and becomes a fur trader at a time when Dutch and Canadian fur traders compete to control access to the natives. The English and French use diplomacy, subterfuge and force to suppress the natives; and, the natives employ any and all means at their disposal to protect their lifestyle and even their very lives.
In this environment, Sean O’Cathail learns diplomacy in his interactions with the Five Iroquois Nationa and is appointed New York Governor Thomas Dongan’s emissary to the Iroquois. He faces adversity, danger and intrigue while securing an English-Iroquois alliance and thwarting the efforts of the French to divide and conquer the Five Iroquois Nations. Even the women who love him – his Mohawk lover, Kai, and the Dutch bond servant, Laurentje van Reuyter – are eventually swept up in the primitive passions of the savage frontier.

Author Bio:

John M. Cahill was born and raised in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in the history-rich Berkshire Hills. He earned a B.A. degree in journalism and political science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After graduation, he moved to New York’s Capital District where, for 34 years, he enjoyed a successful and rewarding career in public relations and social marketing with New York State government. It was while living in New York’s Mohawk Valley that he took an interest in the history of 17th-century New York and began to explore the relationships and interactions of the Dutch and English fur traders with their Iroquois neighbors and their French adversaries. He now lives with his wife in Vienna, Austria.
