Sounded Forth the Trumpet: The Pursuit of Lee from Gettysburg by James Sagerholm

The book is a fictional account of what might have occurred if the president, the Secretary of War, the general-in-chief and the commander of the Union Army of the Potomac had aggressively used all forces available to them in order to prevent Lee’s escape with his army to Virginia after his defeat at Gettysburg. If such an effort were made and succeeded, the war would have ended in 1863, saving over 300,000 lives and millions of dollars.

About Unforgiven

My approximately 3000-word short story “Unforgiven” tells the story of a Black man from the south in the early 1900’s who seeks to venture to the northern cities in hopes of financial success, against the wishes of his new wife. The story includes a bit of the supernatural as the main character is haunted by his deceased wife who blames him for their failed life up north and for the untimely death of their promising son.

The story flashes back from the main character’s current lonely and simple life to a time when he was living in the south with his new wife’s family poised to take over the family farm. Unfortunately, our main character had been bit by the city bug and convinced his new bride to follow him to the bright lights of the city where times were tough, where there was no decent housing and where they lost their son to a gang of young white racists who attacked him when he was returning home from the basketball court “on the wrong side of town”.

After their son’s death, the wife no longer has the will to live. All of their hopes and dreams were pinned to their son who had become a very successful unprofessional basketball player. the couple was stuck in the dingy and small apartment while life passed them by. Eventually, the wife dies and above the fireplace mantle would remain her haunting portrait that at first silently and then much more verbally blamed her husband for every failure.

The old man goes insane as his dead wife’s accusations continue to bear down on him from above the fireplace. He dies in the apartment in front of that picture but, there is a strange change to the picture. The smell of his decaying body permeates the apartment complex, causing his body to be discovered by the landlord. Much time has passed since his spirit left his body and the apartment’s condition reflects that. While searching the apartment for clues, the police discover a photo of the backside of three individuals: a man, a woman and a little boy walking down a sunny country road.

As with many of my works, “Unforgiven” has been self-published and has been received well by readers.
