Dr Toula Gordillo was born in Brisbane, Australia. She grew up travelling the country with a nature-loving father narrating stories, songs and poetry, and a mother who taught her music and distance education. The family eventually settled on the Great Dividing Range—a city called Toowoomba. Toula’s own life, in many ways, is as diverse as the protagonists in this book. Like the characters Jack and Emily who also ‘lived’ west of the Range, Dr Gordillo followed a dream. She escaped to an alternate reality through fantasy fiction to cope with adversity during her teen years.

At seventeen, Toula and her mother moved to Katherine in the Northern Territory. Here, Toula attended Katherine State High School and was exposed to the storytelling method of the Territory’s First Nation’s population. Shelby Kennedy is an entrepreneur and author who was born in the small town of Gibsons, British Columbia Canada. She lived in the city of Vancouver for 10 years before moving out to enjoy life in the more peaceful interior, where she now lives on her own 42 acre spread with her childhood sweetheart, their daughter, 4 dogs and 2 horses.
Shelby is the owner of 2 successful construction companies and is also a fashion, lifestyle and fitness content creator on Instagram. Now she is embarking on a new course and adding another thread to her entrepreneurial skills, by writing books that are aimed at women, providing them with workouts that will leave them with a sense of accomplishment.

Participant/Observer is Milner’s eleventh book. His writings, notably in Inroads, the Canadian Journal of Opinion, which he and John Richards founded in 1991, have led to opportunities to teach and conduct research in Scandinavia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. As recounted in the latter chapters, findings from these experiences have found their way into public policy discussion in Canada through the media and public forums. Milner’s recent focus has been on civic literacy, on the democratic institutions that underly social and economic progress, working closely with the movements seeking to reform the voting system in Canada and a number of provinces.
Henry Milner was born in a bunker in American occupied Germany. His parents, who had survived the war in the Soviet Union, moved the family to Canada, where they settled in Montreal. Earning a BA from McGill and his MA and PhD at Carleton. Based at the University of Montreal, he has taught extensively in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
