I was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and lived there most of my life. After high school, I attended Rutgers University in New Jersey, University of Miami in Florida, Oakland University in Michigan, and Seton Hall University in New Jersey. In 1968, I received a BA degree in psychology followed with a MA and PHD equivalency in education.
My career centered around the education of students in an inner-city environment. I was involved in inner city education for thirty-eight years. During that time, my focus was to help children develop the skills of listening, evaluation and problem solving. And through that process — and practice – I helped students develop ideas and strategies to improve their focusing skills. My premise was that without student focus and interaction, learning would be limited. I feels it extremely necessary to zero in on learning skills sometimes using material outside subject content. My strategy was to actively engage students by becoming involved with the subject at hand through outside research. I developed effective ways to check for understanding, ways that allowed all students to process and respond to the subject at hand. Every month students were involved in a project requiring research. I used questioning as the main tool to maintain student interest and classroom momentum, questions that reflected the objectives of lesson content. More importantly, I strived to instill in students an ability to question and challenge what was being taught and varied instructional activities that engaged students. There was an emphasis on responsibility and accountability. Instructional techniques were meaningful and hands-on. I instilled in students a need for empathy and perspective taking when responding to the ideas and responses of others and strived to make the learning environment as comfortable as possible to allow all students to actively demonstrate their learning.
My interest in media, empathy and propaganda grew out of my experiences in education and became more fueled by the changes in our culture after 9/11, as well as the increased focus on technology as an educational and political tool in the past two decades. More and more, I witnessed information presented through media that was more opinion than substantiated fact. “Fact Checking” in the media is an attempt to counter this phenomenon but it occurs ever so rarely. I decided to write a book that points out the concerns related to acceptance of information without verification or back up research.
