Ted Myers

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
After twenty years trembling on the brink of rock stardom and fifteen years working at record companies, Ted Myers left the music business—or perhaps it was the other way around—and took a job as a copywriter at an advertising agency. This cemented his determination to make his mark as an author.

His fiction has appeared online at Literally Stories and in print in the To Hull & Back Short Story Anthology 2016. His epic and amusing memoir, Making It: Music, Sex & Drugs in the Golden Age of Rock was published in 2017, and more fiction appeared in Iconoclast magazine, The Mystic Blue Review, Centum Press’ 100 Voices Anthology, Culture Cult Magazine, the Ink Stains Anthology, Vol. 9, and Bewildering Stories. Fluffy’s Revolution, published by Black Rose Writing in 2019, was his first novel. A rare poem was published in Put into Words, My Love, an anthology from Pomme Journal in January 2020. Black Rose published his second novel, Paris Escapade, in December 2020.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Paris Escapade was inspired by a camp-sponsored trip across Europe I took when I was sixteen. That was in 1962. I made my protagonist, Eddie Strull, a little older (seventeen) because of the many adult situations he gets himself into. Although the first three chapters are almost straight memoir, the rest of the book is pure fiction.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I start a new story or book with a concept the is drawn with broad strokes. I’ve never done a detailed outline, and it’s gotten me into quite a few dilemmas in the past. But I believe a story — if it has legs — will ultimately write itself.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Kurt Vonnegut, John Fowles, Vladimir Nabokov, Margaret Atwood, Nikos Kazantzakis.

What are you working on now?
A sequel to Fluffy’s Revolution (by popular demand). It’s taking a while, though.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon, Facebook, Goodreads, Bookbub, Twitter, book bloggers, live interviews.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get a good editor/proofreader. Get trusted and literate friends to read the manuscript and give you honest feedback.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Study and learn the craft. Even if you think you’re a good writer, you can learn a lot in a classroom situation with a good teacher and a spirited group of fellow students giving you input.

What are you reading now?
The Gopher King by Gojan Nikolich.

What’s next for you as a writer?
More writing, I guess.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Last Temptation of Christ, The Magus, The King in Yellow, The Blind Assassin.

J.G. MacLeod

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
J.G. MacLeod writes both fiction and non-fiction stories. To date, she has published seven novels: Abalone is an emotionally-charged read that tells the story of a young woman involved in a violent and controlling relationship & won the 2018 Online Book Club Book of the Year Award for ‘Other Fiction’. Lady Ellen (Book One in The Adventures of Lady Ellen Montagu series) is a historical romance set in nineteenth-century Ireland & won the 2018 Breakthrough Novel Award for Historical Fiction. It also received a Readers’ Favorite Award (Honorable Mention, 2019).

Ms. MacLeod has also released two sequels to Lady Ellen: Two Paths and New London, as well as a boxset that offers all three titles in one collection. These books take place in Ireland and Canada & contain themes of family, marriage, motherhood, exile, immigration, secrecy, betrayal, and love.

Ms. MacLeod’s most successful release, The Future Bride: A MacLeod Time-Travel Rom Com, combines research on the author’s own family tree with time travel. It is her first foray into the rom com genre & it is a bestseller in Celtic History. The Future Bride was a Finalist in the Independent Author Network’s Book of the Year Awards in ‘Romance’ (2020).

A Moment in Time, a romantic-suspense novel was released in 2021.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Moment in Time: A Romantic-Suspense Novel came out in April, 2021 and deals with themes of trauma, second chances, and bystander effect. This is the first book that uses J.G.’s twenty-year, teaching career as the foundation for the story. It also blends suspense, psychology, and thriller elements.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write very late at night, sometimes until 4 in the morning. I am also able to write easily if I go for a hike beforehand.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I was a huge fan of C.S. Lewis, Margaret Atwood, Agatha Christie, J.R.R. Tolkien, L.M. Montgomery, and Charlotte Bronte growing up. I earned an English degree with a focus on 19th-century British Literature, so there are many other notable authors who inspired me as well, such as William Blake and Jane Austen. The Lord of the Rings, Anne of Green Gables, and The Color Purple are three of my favourite books.

What are you working on now?
I am working on The Past Love, the sequel to The Future Bride. This story also takes place in 15th-century Scotland, but one year earlier than The Future Bride. It asks the question: is the future inevitable, or can we alter the course of our lives if given a second chance?

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Twitter and Amazon have been the most successful for promoting my novels.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be yourself and write what inspires and heals you. If you write, then you’re already a writer. Listen to your characters and treat them as you would real people. Don’t follow an outline so rigidly that your characters cannot breathe. If they say or do things in the heat of writing a scene, see where it takes them and worry about your outline and editing afterwards.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Get the first draft down and worry about editing later. Too many people edit obsessively as they go and never finish everything. I just write, like a faucet turned on, and worry about what to add and cut in later stages.

What are you reading now?
I am re-reading Jane Eyre currently. I am amazed at how effectively Charlotte Bronte uses first-person narration. The psychology captured within this story is stellar. Don’t listen to anyone who says you must write in third person all the time. I also love how Bronte shows us how slow travel was in the 19th century. She describes how a 6-mile buggy ride took an hour and a half!

What’s next for you as a writer?
I push myself to grow in some way with every project. A Moment in Time was my first time writing from both a male and a female point of view. I am going to write a non-fiction book next in which I delve into narcissistic abuse and how to end the cycle and heal.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Future Bride, as it is a comedy and would help me laugh in a tough situation. Tim O’Shei’s book, How to Survive on a Deserted Island. It might come in handy. And The Lord of the Rings, as it is my favourite book series of all time.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my very first book I’ve written and I’m so excited about publishing it! I have always wanted to share my story because I have had such amazing results with my weight loss journey and all of the very hard work and time it took me to get here. I very strongly believe that the “diet industry” wants us to fail. There’s a 97% failure rate in the industry but is the highest revenue making industry in the world! I’m here to break the mindset of having to go on “diets” that are completely unsustainable and killing yourself at the gym.

I have unlocked the key on how to incorporate your weight loss journey with mental AND physical changes. You cannot go on a weight loss journey having one without the other, it just won’t work. Truth be told, losing weight is the majority of a mental journey then a physical one in the aspect of our habits and how they need to be adjusted, added or eliminated in order to be success in losing weight.

And that’s what I’m hear to show you!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
How To Finally Shed That F^*king Fat! I finally shed that f^*king fat with a sustainable, healthy and great way that can work for anyone!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Nope, just a plain ole writer, sorry to disappoint.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The “diet industry books” have made me want to prove what they are doing is so wrong!

What are you working on now?
I’m working on creating a book about how to unf^*k your brain. Writing How To Finally Shed That F^*king Fat really opened up my eyes that people need to understand how society has manipulated our minds on what’s right, what’s wrong, how we should do things and how we shouldn’t do things. This is so off beat from how we should be using our brains. We need to have a better hold on what our mind is trying to tell our body that’s incorrect and how to adjust that so we are freeing our mental state into a positive state of mind with healthy thoughts and habits.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still working that since I’m new to all of this but right now I’m heavily into Clickfunnels in order to promote my book, my journey and coaching through my book.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write! When you think you can’t, just do. If you need to collaborate with someone who has done this before, than do that to. Use your resources!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You can plan and build all day, everyday but taking action is the key to success!

What are you reading now?
I am reading Russell Brunson books, who is the creator and founder of Clickfunnels. I typically read books that open my mind to how I can better build my brand and businesses. However, I have loved Marian Keye’s books, but with being a new mom and building my businesses, I have like time for pleasure books at the moment.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m not quite sure yet, but I’d say to see what I have in me to spill out onto paper and see where that takes me.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, Sushi Is For Beginners by Marian Keyes and The One Thing by Gary Keller

A journalist by education, and internet marketer by professional experience, I am a story writer by passion and the skill of story writing is in my blood and soul. I have written many comics and so far 6 have published. My debut mini-novel released on Amazon Kindle just now.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is WRONG NUMBER VOL 1. My publisher saw my work in his other series. He gave me an idea about a story that starts with a wrong number. I planned and shared my concept based on his idea. He loved it and believed that I was the best person to work on this novel. My novel turned out to be something better than what I thought. I submitted whole story of 21 chapters to publisher. VOL 1 has first 7 chapters of my story.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not that I can notice.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Alan Moore, Frank Miller, and Anupam Sinha.

What are you working on now?
A story featuring vampire werewolves which is my own creation. A story for another American publisher. And a story for a French publisher.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a blog but people visit my Facebook and Instagram most. So mostly I promote my books here.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Do not let criticism affect you. And write that what you are sure that you can write best.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never think easy. Do not let reader guess what happens in climax.

What are you reading now?
A novel about an Indian superhero.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am working on a story to be published in a French comicbook series.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

I’m a fairly new author, and I’ve written 2 books. I am currently working on book 3, a fantasy romance. I’ve wanted to ne a writer for as long as I can remember. I first started with poems. I kept them in a journal that my mother still has today.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written three books making up The Morrigan Chronicles trilogy (Awakening, Forged, and Raze). I’m currently working on a crossover series and am bursting to get it down on paper. I love going on road trips in my Jeep and those experiences always make their way into my books. If you are a fan of the television Supernatural, Vikings, and Peaky Blinders—you will find a few “nods” to them throughout my books.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Raze is the last book in The Morrigan Chronicles. I had it completely written when I went on a road trip with my Dad through South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. We had such a great time and I fell in love with that part of the country. We were sitting in a cabin in Red Lodge, Montana when I told my Dad I had to re-write most of the book because these places had to appear in the book. I was able to complete the book and print it out for my Dad to read before he passed away. That book and that trip will always hold a sacred place in my heart.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m a HUGE Kurt Cobain fan, so Nirvana is usually playing in the background, though I do cheat on them with Pearl Jam occasionally.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
SO MANY!!! I’m a huge fan of anything Leigh Bardugo writes. Melissa Albert, Stephanie Gerber, Victoria Schwab, and of course the wonderful and great Patrick Rothfuss

What are you working on now?
I have a crossover series I’m working on right now. I’m not saying who is the main character here, but I do tell you who it’s about in the Note From The Author section in Raze. I’m a fan of taking a minor character and creating an entirely new world for them to grow in.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have yet to figure that out!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write because you love it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Listen to things “backwards” to hear what someone is really telling you.

What are you reading now?
Lore by Alexandra Bracken

What’s next for you as a writer?
Keep writing!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Six of Crows series for sure, and channel my inner Kaz Brekker.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been writing off and on for years, but became serious about writing after I finally finished an entire manuscript (which shall never see the light of day). I am a YA fantasy author, and an avid reader of that genre! I’ve published two books in my series, The Hurricane Chronicles.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent book is Intruder – and it follows our main character Reka as she works to discover what happened to Khan after the cliffhanger of the first book, Storyteller. Along the way, she must work to convince Khan’s cantankerous older brother, Yuriel, to join in their quest.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write everywhere, and I plot out my books with colored post it notes on my bedroom wall. I keep everything on Google Drive, which means that I can, and have, written in Airbnbs, coffee shops, while road tripping, at parks… basically any chance I get, I’m probably writing!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
C. S Lewis was the first fantasy author I read. Lately, I’ve really enjoyed Sarah J Maas, Marissa Meyer, Sabaa Tahir, Grace Draven and Brigid Kemmerer.

What are you working on now?
Currently I’m revising and editing the third book in my series. It’s called Healer, and focuses on mending the broken bridges between the two brothers, Nakhan and Yuriel. I hope to have it ready for publication by January 2021.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far we’ve seen the most success on Facebook, Reddit and Instagram. I believe that having a lot of enthusiasm for your own books helps sales – if you’re excited about it, others will be too!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
WRITE, WRITE, WRITE. Then take a break, and do something else. You have to live to inspire your writing. Also, read a lot, not always in the genre that you want to write in. Good writing is inspirational, and will push you to become even better!

What are you reading now?
Right now, I’m working my way through the An Ember in the Ashes series, by Sabaa Tahir. I’m in awe of her worldbuilding, and the way that she draws you into the world despite the slower pace of the book. There’s so much there that you have to really slow down and chew your way through the books, and that’s a great compliment. I love the fresh take on Roman culture, and I can tell there’s so much more to be discovered in this story!

What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to write a couple of standalone fantasies, as well as finish up the Hurricane Chronicles. I’m also working on a contemporary romance series, which would hopefully be available in a couple of years.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Hmm, good question. I’d bring A Court of Mist and Fury as my happy, guilty pleasure read. Then I’d bring Lord of the Rings, because it’s so long, I’d have reading material forever, even with how quickly I read. Then I’d bring two books I haven’t read yet, ideally a Hades/Persephone retelling and something else (maybe pirate based? Enemies to Lovers?) and I’d cross my fingers that they’d be great books!

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Let me just say that I have been at this a very, very long time. I’ve worked in publishing for over thirty years. I’ve been an author for twenty years and a publisher for six, with various related responsibilities sprinkled in between.

I have six published novels, Yesterday’s Dreams, Tomorrow’s Memories, Today’s Promise, The Halfling’s Court, The Redcaps’ Queen, and Baba Ali and the Clockwork Djinn (cowritten with Day Al-Mohamed). My newest, Daire’s Devils, is scheduled to release next year. I also have eight short story collections, Eternal Wanderings, A Legacy of Stars, Consigned to the Sea, Flash in the Can, Transcendence, Between Darkness and Light, The Fox’s Fire, and The Kindly One, and three non-fiction writers’ guides: The Literary Handyman, More Tips from the Handyman, and LH: Build-A-Book Workshop. I am also the senior editor of the Bad-Ass Faeries anthology series, Gaslight & Grimm, Side of Good/Side of Evil, After Punk, and Footprints in the Stars.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My upcoming novel, Daire’s Devils, is a military science fiction adventure set in a universe originally created for my husband’s role-playing system, the Alliance Archives Martial Role-Playing Game. The novel started as a series of short stories I wrote for various themed anthology projects. The first story was called Carbon Copy and it was for the anthology Space Pirates, edited by David Lee Summers. I had so much fun with the premise and the characters that I kept bringing them out to play whenever another anthology opportunity came up. Each story linked to the next until soon I already had half a novel’s worth of words. It took some effort to weave everything together and flesh it out, but it was well worth the effort. This is the most action-packed novel I have ever written.

In short, the novel revolves around a special forces unit assigned to an advanced flagship prototype that various corporate and military forces want to secure the tech specifications for. It is soon discovered that the crew has been infiltrated and Daire’s Devils come up hard against those trying to steal the high-tech designs.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wear earplugs so I’m not distracted by background noise. Because I have tinnitus it is almost like having a built-in white noise machine.

Also… I am a non-linear pantser, so not only do I not outline my work in advance, but I also don’t write in sequential order. And yet, in the end, everything comes out tightly woven and consistent throughout. I can’t explain it and hardly anyone believes it (except for my co-author) but it’s true!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love to read and have done so voraciously since I was very, very young. I can’t really point to any one author or book that has had a specific impact on me as an author. I would have to say every book I have ever read. See, I can’t quote grammar rules at you or even particularly realize when I’ve broken one of them not on purpose, but I have a very instinctual grasp on writing just from years and years and years of immersion. Now, that doesn’t mean I am perfect. I am the first to admit I very much need an editor, but I have a very good inate sense of pacing, flow, and structure. All of that is thanks to the many authors that entertained me over the years.

What are you working on now?
My current project is a novella for the cryptid series Systema Paradoxa. I can’t tell you what it is about because the series is featured quarterly in the subscription box Cryptid Crate, so the details of the book and the specific cryptid feature are carefully guarded until the crates ship. However, for those who are not familiar with the term cryptid, they are creatures suspected to exist or have existed, but for which there is no scientific proof. Examples would be Bigfoot, the Jersey Devil, Nessie, and other such creatures where they are reported sitings and lore and legend, but no evidence.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use the scatter effect. I sign up for every author’s page site that comes up and I maintain an active presence on social media. I also do three things for every book: 1) submit to Publisher’s Weekly for review, 2) schedule one month on NetGalley for review, 3) send copies to Locus Magazine. I also use Itsy Bitsy Book Tours when I have a little extra cash.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Consider this a dedicated hobby and be prepared to put in a lot of work and time before you get anywhere, if you get anywhere. There is no predicting what book will take off and there is no magic combination for making that happen. Publishing is as much luck as it is skill and opportunity.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never respond to reviews, or any other kind of opinion or critique, good or bad. Whatever the context, it can only reflect poorly on you if things go wrong and that can damage your literary career.

What are you reading now?
I am in between books at the moment.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Next verse, same as the first! LOL I always have projects in the works and random opportunities present themselves at every turn. I don’t know what I will be up to once I complete the cryptid novella. I have plenty of things I should be writing, but who knows which one will start ticking first.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A boy scout or survival manual, a blank journal with pen, anything by Patricia Briggs or Anne McCaffrey.
