Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I started writing in late Dec 2017 when a work colleague told me she had been publishing books using Amazon. I am now midway through writing book 12. All but three are historical detective mysteries – three, coming out in 2022, are set during World War II.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest release sees the start of a new detective series set in the late 50’s early 60’s. It is called A Time to Kill (yes, I know!!) but the quote which comes from Solomon is an essential element of the story. The story was inspired partly by a wonderful book by the US journalist, Charles Glass, who wrote about WWII deserters and what happened to them. It’s moving and wonderful – I can’t recommend enough.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I make it up as I go along. If I don’t know what’s going to happen then hopefully the reader won’t either…

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My books are pitched somewhere between Agatha Christie, P.G. Wodehouse and Carl Hiaasen! Any of those three!

What are you working on now?
My new book will be published in a month or so. It is set in Monte Carlo where I spent two years of my life. Who could not be inspired by the Riviera and the history of Monte Carlo. It calls to mind Grace Kelly, Alfred Hitchcock & Cary Grant, the Monaco Grand Prix. Pur, unadulterated glamour.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am equally poor on Facebook and AMS but they tend to be my ‘go to’ sites.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Three pieces of advice:
1. Write!!
2. Have someone who knows what they are doing edit it. Self-editing is the path to hell and bad reviews.
3. Publish it! Don’t put it in a drawer – get it out there!!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
A mate of mine, a real entrepreneur, told me that my problem was that I was too risk averse. Meanwhile, he had made a small fortune on Amazon and his website selling supplements without having any experience of the area or the product. He said that he was the sort of person who jumped out of a plane then started to assemble the parachute.
So…I jumped out of the aeroplane!!

What are you reading now?
Mayflower Murders – Anthony Horowitz

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finish ‘The Bluebeard Club’ the latest in my Kit Aston Mystery series (the one I mentioned earlier set in Monte Carlo)

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
David Copperfield
Tom Brown’s Schooldays
Pride and Prejudice
In Search of Lost Time (I’m counting this as one book – in fact, one sentence…!)

Isabella Harron

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a Texas girl who loves the outdoors. I love the Texas countryside from our hill country to our rivers and beaches. I spend the majority of my time with my family on our adventures and I long to travel more. I began writing in my head twenty years ago but never took the time to sit down and pen my ideas to paper. Since devoting more time to my writing craft I have completed seven books that are available on Amazon. I have two that I currently working on and hope to have them published later this year.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Missed and Misunderstood: A Texas Romance. This book began as one story of two remarkable individuals that met and came very near missing their opportunity to ever see each other again. What began as this simple love story emerged after I took an interest in the growing problem of illegal immigration into our state. My question then and one that continues to bother me is: What happens to the children? Mary, my lead character is one such adult who was directly affected by her mother’s choices. Mary’s heritage dictated her life. Fortunately for my lead character, she developed a raw sense of self-worth and continued to grow into a wonderful woman who found the perfect man for her. Missed and Misunderstood is not only a romance but a touching family drama.

What are you working on now?
I am near completion on Rumor in a Small Town: A Texas Romance. In small towns everywhere but especially in Texas, the rumor mill runs faster than any internet system. This book is a budding romance and the small town’s opinion on that romance.

Maryanne (Pen Name: M. Rose) Peluso

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My full name is Maryanne Peluso. Rose is my Confirmation name. I am using a Pen Name to protect the identity of many of the individuals mentioned in my memoir. I am a devout Catholic and a former Franciscan Religious Sister. Prior to entering the Catholic Convent, I was a graphic artist for nearly 10 years. While in the Convent, I earned a Masters Degree in Pastoral/Spiritual Theology. When I left the Sisters in 2007, I went to work for a Parish in Northern New Jersey as the Director of their Religious Education Program. However, because I’ve been a chronic pain sufferer for over 22 years, I had to stop working full-time and applied for SSDI. I was born and raised in Newark and Irvington, New Jersey. I now live in Central New Jersey with my 82 y/o mother and my pet lovebird, Cheekie.

I’ve only written this one book, my memoir. It is the one and only story I had “inside” of me that just had to “get out.” It was written with the hope and sole purpose of helping other people. Other chronic pain sufferers like myself suffering from pudendal neuropathy. I also hope the book will bring comfort to other Christians who struggle in their relationships with the Lord.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
It is my memoir, it is the compelling true story of all that I went through in order to make peace with a mysterious chronic illness and the loss of my religious vocation.

It is entitled, “Behind the Tapestry: My Discovery of God’s Grace Amidst Chronic Pain and Loss.”

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Off the top of my head, I can’t really think of any unusual writing habits. I’m not really a writer by trade. I don’t have a degree in English or Literature. I just love to read and I like to hear about other people’s life stories. I find true stories and memoirs fascinating. So, I had this one story to tell and I just had to tell it. I wrote and wrote and wrote until I ended up with a first draft that was nearly 550 pages long. I knew that wouldn’t work so I went back to my computer and began editing – in order to cut out parts of the story that weren’t really in keeping with the memoir’s theme.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I don’t think there are any particular authors or books that influenced me to write my memoir. I mean I have authors that I favor and prefer to read. I have specific genres that I prefer also. And I very rarely will “venture into” a genre that I don’t usually read. I stick to what I like and the authors I know.

I have read some wonderful memoirs. Most of the ones that I’ve read and have enjoyed were written by “real” people who weren’t authors but happened to have a story that just HAD to be told (like mine!) and so I find these stories to be very riveting. Stories told about the types of things we see on the news – sensational murder mysteries or kidnapping stories, etc. I find these very interesting and they really keep my attention.

What are you working on now?
I am not currently working on another book. I don’t really plan on writing another book although some people that have already read my memoir are encouraging me to do so. I don’t know, we’ll see. Right now I am concentrating on promoting and marketing my memoir. Since I self-published it, I am responsible for most of the marketing and promo work. My book cannot help people if no one knows about it.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Here is my Author Website: http://authormrosepeluso.com
You can find the memoir’s own page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/memoirbehindthetapestry
I’m also on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MRosePeluso_ and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mrosepeluso_

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Any advice for new authors? Yes, I would say to do a lot of research about the writing process. If you are like me and aren’t a writer by trade, or you do not have a degree in English or Literature, you will need to learn an awful lot about HOW to write a book before you even begin writing one. It isn’t as easy as just putting words on paper. There is a system and the right way (and the wrong way if you don’t learn about the “ins and outs” of writing) to go about authoring a book. I would highly recommend that you learn, study, take classes, get books about writing from the library or from the internet, join writing clubs or groups of writers on Facebook, reach out online to the experts in the field of writing and publishing. There will be some invaluable information in all of these places. I definitely recommend that a new author takes the time to learn all that he or she could about the writing process and how to author a book before putting one word on paper.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I ever heard about writing was from a class I took online. And it is simply this – don’t ever give up! Keep writing and don’t stop. If you have a story to tell, one that just has to be told, MUST be told and you have a dream of publishing a book – go for it! Don’t ever give up on your dream. Keep working at it until you make that dream become a reality.

What are you reading now?
I just began reading “Breakdown” by Jonathan Kellerman. It is a fictional crime thriller. It is a series of Kellerman’s featuring forensic psychologist, Alex Delaware and his homicide detective best friend, Milo Sturgis. I have read many of Kellerman’s Alex Delaware books and have enjoyed all of them. I’m looking forward to reading this particular book very much.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m not sure what is next for me as a writer. I have no desire to write another book or memoir. This was my one, powerful, very personal story to tell and I did that. Right now, my focus is on promoting and marketing this memoir. So that it could truly reach its target audience and get into the hands of the people it was meant to help.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Wow! That’s a great question. Off the top of my head, I’m not sure how to answer that. I guess I would have to say probably any of Kellerman’s, Alex Delaware books; Patricia Cornwell’s, Dr. Kay Scarpetta series of books. I’ve read all 20 of them and really enjoyed the series. And then any of the many memoirs that I’ve read over the years. Probably the ones written by Elizabeth Smart, Michelle Knight, Jaycee Dugard, Gina De Jesus and Amanda Berry.

Colleen MacFarlane

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve just completed my first novel, titled, Listening to Her Own Voice. Beginning in the 1860’s, Rosa, my protagonist, immigrates from Switzerland with her family to Minnesota. I am a retired social worker and financial educator. I am licensed as a clinical social worker, and a financial educator. I have two Master’s degrees; one in counseling and the other an MBA in personal financial planning. My training and experience influence the characters I write about and the dilemmas they find themselves in. I live in North Carolina with my husband, and our dog Lucy, who is the inspiration for my second book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
This is my favorite question to answer. Listening to Her Own Voice was the result on pure inspiration. I’ve chronicled the life of my 2nd great aunt, the youngest of the siblings in MN and her struggle to decide on her vocation. Years ago, I was bitten by the genealogy bug, and in my research, I found out about Rosa. In my determination to thoroughly investigate my maternal side, and then track down what happened to Rosa, I actually spoke with a 95-year-old woman who’d been taught piano by her. I was so filled with inspiration throughout the year that it took me to write the book, that I never felt any writer’s block. Each and every day of writing was both hard and fun. It is the result of years of research and fact-checking, but all in all writing the book felt like I was going to a party every day.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No unusual habits; just rules. One is that I pace myself. The other is that my frisky miniature schnauzer reminds me when it’s time to pace myself. When she has had it with staring at me at the computer, she throws a fit, and that’s when I know it’s time to take time for play. I seek assistance and feedback from anyone who will take a chapter and read it. Usually I implement the suggestions. Also, when a particular piece of research is important to me, I will gladly pay an expert for information. Often this is a contribution to a charitable organization. Ultimately, however, I listen to my own sensibilities about what is right for my book, as I am the one who has given it the most time, effort, and thought.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My writing teacher recommended a book titled Plot vs. Character, and in these recent times of quarantine, it has been invaluable. Any help I can receive from writing a worthy prologue or epilogue, I am grateful for. Every writer, every foot note, every descriptive word helps the synapses in my brain to fire, and I make notes. I enjoyed Elizabeth C. Stanton’s autobiography and her fight for the women’s right to vote. I enjoy reading historical fiction. I enjoyed reading Freedom Bound by Rosalie Turner. I’m currently reading Sisters of the Resistance by Christine Wells.

What are you working on now?
I hope to publish my second book this fall, a children’s book, titled: Life’s Lessons from Lucy the Schnauzer. Anyone interested in learning more about me can check my website at www.colleenbooks.com. I have a blog there, and will let people know of any book promotions I’m planning. My 3rd book, which I am working on is titled: You Need Me. It is about a 50-year-old couple who think they are financially set to retire at age 62, only to learn their financial planner is pilfering their retirement savings.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ll probably always do some autographed book giveaways. I advertise through Kindle Select, and let the readers on goodreads know when my book is out. Following that, I will advertise in a newspaper that’s relevant to the topic. I ask friends and relatives to take a look, and provide reviews if the like it. I really enjoy written reviews such as this, and wherever, possible, am seeking to advertise world-wide.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Make perseverance your middle name. When you start to burn out, it’s time for a break. Share your joys and sorrows with someone; in other words, get support and feedback.
Know that as a self-publisher, marketing will be difficult.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
With regard to writing, it is to be inspired. Overall, advice that I would give is to ask for help, because someone will always be out there to give it.

What are you reading now?
Sisters of the Resistance by Christine Wells and Gentle Warriors, a biography about Clara Euland in Minnesota who fought for women’s right to vote.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Ideas for another book are constantly percolating in my head. I might do a ‘test’ unscientific survey of friends about my ideas. Some of my ideas will end up on the production floor, so to speak. Others may turn into a book. It’s possible I will collaborate with another writer to add to the creativity of the book.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
East of Eden, Power, books about nutrition.

Carter Ettore

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Professionally, by trade I am a multi-media artist/producer in the corporate marketing world, though I have worn many hats over the years. Not all of them stylish, and many of them ill-fitting. ‘Razorback’ is my debut novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My current novel is, ‘Razorback’. It is somewhat unconventional in presentation and writing style, for one, because that is the way I write, and I am not interested in “formula fiction”. The inspiration for the book came when I fully realized what it means to be a “fish out of water” with people both: more accomplished than you, and aloof; and, younger than you, and even more aloof. The rest of it came from twenty years of unusual experiences plumbed from the excess intake of beer, wine, and “brownwater”.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I try to take notes, and I want my stories to be linear, and constantly escalating. But, to keep things fluid on a creative level, I often just make a list of key points I intend to include and cross them off as I go. I let the stream of consciousness dictate what actually goes down, rather than abide by a strict beginning/middle/end arc.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My biggest influences, directly or indirectly, have been: Patrick DeWitt, ‘Ablutions, Notes for a Novel’; Charles Bukowski’s portrayal of his alter-ego, Chinaski, as a vehicle to verbalize his own misgivings and the humor within hopelessness; Chuck Pahlaniuk for his absurd microcosm imagining of near-reality; and, Gary Shteyngart, whose novel, “Absurdistan” struck a chord with me years ago.

What are you working on now?
Currently I have three book projects in various stages of development. The primary project, and the furthest toward completion is a follow-up to ‘Razorback’. It is not exactly a sequel, but it ambiguously picks up on where the core character, Leon, may have ended up. Ultimately it is a passion play of glory and frustration to the game of baseball… and pop music.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Admittedly, I am new to the business. I had great success on a recent campaign with The Fussy Librarian, but I am still working through my first rounds of promotion with paid ads, newsletters, etc., and using those results to fine tune my exposure.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Anyone can write a book. Write what you want to write. Don’t pay attention to everything the Internet tells you to do. Do what you want to do. Also, find a really good editor to give you serious notes, feedback, and suggestions that specifically fit the style of your writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Write drunk, edit sober.”

What are you reading now?
“House of Leaves”, Mark Z. Danielewski

What’s next for you as a writer?
As mentioned earlier, finishing my next book which is a sort-of follow-up to ‘Razorback’. Continuing to promote, continuing to build my brand, and catalogue… and selling my stories for twenty million dollars to Paramount. Ha! Seriously, what’s next for me is nothing different than what my next day, and the day after that, and the day after that is, and has been for years: just keep making progress on ideas, on stories, on manuscripts. Sometimes the progress and the days of progress may be far in-between and sporadic, but just don’t let them go. Keeping regularity in ideas, and notes, and execution is always what should be next for anyone who is or wants to be a writer.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
– Bukowski, “Post Office”
– Philip Caputo, “Acts of Faith”
– Patrick DeWitt, “Ablutions”

Daniel Trump

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a schizophrenic novelist living in the American suburbs. I have written about a dozen books in a number of genres like young adult, fantasy, horror, and sci-fi. Writing is how I express myself: I can’t express who I am in my normal, everyday life, so I do it with my stories. It’s that simple.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Spaces Eternal is a sci-fi romance novella inspired by anyone who has ever looked up at the sky at night and dreamt of going to outer space and having adventures – combined with the constant desire to fall in love with someone wonderful.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write at any time, day or night, and in any genre. I don’t limit myself to writing the same book over and over.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Neil Gaiman is a great writer who brilliantly creates fantasy imagery. Stephen King weaves a good story better than anyone. Max Brooks writes about characters and cultural breakdown brilliantly. and Toni Morisson wrote a great ghost story to be emulated.

What are you working on now?
I’m about to start something new, something daring, and I have no idea where it will lead.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I like promoting on indie websites. They get the word out better than amazon ever can. Sorry.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write! Do it. Write a lot and read a lot. That’s all.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write a lot and read and lot.

What are you reading now?
I am reading the Primarchs series of Warhammer Horus Heresy novels.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to challenge myself to write something less pulpy and more literary.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
World War Z, Grendel, Catcher in the Rye, Beloved
