Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a first-time author who loves telling exciting magical stories centered around African Americans and rooted in Christian themes. I enjoy reading, playing games like Assassin’s Creed, and hanging out with my girlfriend. Through his stories, he desires to push his readers to question societal norms. I have written one novel and one novella.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Spirit Warriors. I wanted to tell compelling stories in the fantasy realm that was centered around african Americans because I didn’t see many as I read fantasy growing up. Also, I wanted a story that was about more than just young love, swords, and magic but that questioned societal norms and challenged beliefs.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I love to listen to music really loud because it helps me visualize what I am writing. I also like to be outside during certain scenes so when I’m describing the sunshine or the wind I can feel it.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Cinda Williams Chima, Walter Dean Myers, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Brandon Sanderson, George RR Martin, N.K. Jemisin, and Tomi Adeyemi

What are you working on now?
I am working on book 2 of Secrets of A Hidden Realm, the book after Spirit Warriors. I am also working on a screenplay for a movie that I want to produce called Doohman. It is centered around a young black boy who struggles with the meaning of manhood.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook and Amazon ads.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the story you want to read.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never give up on your dream.

What are you reading now?
I am currently reading The Fifth Season, Good profit, and The principle of the Path. I would say attempting to read as I have just recently published by book and am extremely busy with it.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to push out my next book before the end of the year and continue promoting Spirit Warriors.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring the entire Seven Realm series. I never get tired of reading it.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a freelance writer and editor cum blogger.
I have written four solo books and been a part of two co-authored books so far.
I have also edited a book written by another author.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Love (Try) Angle is my latest book. It is in fact my debut novel.
I had been meaning to write a novel ever since my first book (poetry collection titled A Rustic Mind) came out. After years of contemplating over an idea, the plot for Love (Try) Angle came as an inspiration in a dream one day and I just knew this is what my debut novel would be based on.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to challenge myself every now and then. So, when I come across a new genre or form of writing as a reader, I immediately want to try it out myself too. But my quirk here is that I don’t emulate, I add my own bits to it, and voila! I have something new completely.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Almost all books by Enid Blyton and Sidney Sheldon,
Harry Potter series by JK Rowling,
God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
Godfather by Mario Puzo
Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie
The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera

What are you working on now?
A nonfiction book based on the lives of women who are into multiple professions.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Word of mouth and reviews (honest and unbiased/unpaid reviews) have worked best for me so far with all my books.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Focus on the content of your book more than the marketing. If it’s a good book, it will find the right audience who will appreciate it. Also, understand the types of publishing that exist out there clearly before you decide to publish.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t write to get published.

What are you reading now?
Once Bitten Twice Lucky by Sundari Venkatraman.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m planning to be more experimental with my writing. As in, I want to write genres and formats that I have never written before, like a thriller or horror story.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban
2. The Bell Jar by Slyvia Plath
3. The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway
4. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
5. Sophie’s Choice by William Styron

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a midwestern comedian who writes while trapped in hotel rooms. I’ve written 3 full-length pieces of nonfiction, more 99-cent mini eBooks than you can shake a stick at, and 1 work of fiction.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The current book is called We Are 100, and it was probably inspired by the anger issues I have. Heh.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not that I know of… I have problems writing at home, if only because having two young kiddos makes things chaotic. So, if you call only being able to write in a hotel room unusual, there you go.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I really enjoy Michael Lewis. Other than that, On Writing Well and The Elements of Style are fantastic.

What are you working on now?
Right now I’m trying to edit my 7th comedy album… so, not writing anything at the moment.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Best method seems to be word of mouth. We Are 100 seems to be generating great fanfare among the few people who have discovered it so far. Now, how to reach that critical mass known as success…

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Nope. I don’t know what I’m doing, so I shouldn’t try and tell others what to do.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never give anyone advice, because you’re just telling them how to be like you.

What are you reading now?
Empire of the Summer Moon.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m bouncing around another nonfiction in my noggin at the moment.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band is hands down the best book ever written. I read it every couple years and never cease to laugh, roll my eyes, and shake my head in wonderment, confusion, and shock.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I write sweet Southern romance novels set mainly in the American South in the 1950s and inspirational nonfiction. In my novels, I hope you’ll find inspiration and a gentle—yet compelling—story that is intriguing and entertaining. About my nonfiction books, a reader wrote that I offer spiritual tonic and hope.
I like to laugh with people but not at people. I don’t like to see or hear about people or animals being abused. I’m a spectator fan of several sports, my favorite being tennis. My favorite vacation spot is any beach. I don’t like being in the dark and am fearful of snakes! I don’t enjoy being in elevators. I can’t jump rope. I played varsity basketball in high school. I would describe myself as hopeful, enthusiastic, and optimistic.
I was raised in Tennessee and have lived in several American Southern states. Our cocker spaniel died when she was 14-1/2 years old. The pain of her death lasted so long. I still miss her and don’t plan to get another pet–it hurt too much when we lost her.
My interest in books peaked when I was in junior high school. I loved being around books so much, I wanted to be a librarian when I grew up. I took creative writing in college and that sparked my interest in writing. My first published piece happened in the early 1990s and was an article in a denominational magazine.
My first novel published was That Summer, book #1 in the Caney Creek series, and came out in 2012. I have 14 published novels and novellas.
I have four nonfiction books published: Amen and Good Morning, God: A Book of Morning Prayers, Amen and Good Night, God: A Book of Evening Prayers, His Awesome Majesty: Praising God’s Greatness, and America: Her Hope for the Future. I’ve coauthored with Vickie Phelps Writing 101: A Handbook of Tips and Encouragement for Writers, Simply Christmas: Memories, Traditions, and Stories of the Season, and How to Write for the Christian Marketplace.
My writing career includes more than 200 articles and short stories, which have appeared in over 50 well-known Christian and secular publications including Guideposts, Decision, and The Upper Room. I’m an online contributor to Christian Devotions Ministries (http://www.ChristianDevotions.us).
My devotions appear in eight anthologies and I wrote devotions on assignment and freelance for the following daily devotionals: Devotions, Open Windows, Pathways to God, The Quiet Hour, The Secret Place, and The Upper Room. I’ve taught workshops at writers’ conferences and I wrote an inspirational newspaper column for seven years.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book, Just You and Me, is a Christian beach story of love, forgiveness, and divine providence. In this sweet mid-20th-century romance, a magnificent mistake brings Allison and Jim together, each at the beach with a buddy. An unfamiliar instant attraction tugs at both their hearts. But when Jim gives Allison a compliment, she misunderstands it as a pick-up line. When Jim subsequently falls silent, Allison determines to find a way to get him to love her. Jim has spent half of his adult life in the Air Force and will soon leave the military. He wants Allison by his side to help him with the challenges his new lifestyle will bring. But after a horrible accident at the airfield, Jim keeps his diagnosis from Allison for fear she may not want to spend their lives together.

I love the beach. My first memory of the beach was a trip with family when I was four years old. As a teenager, and because I was an only child, my parents allowed me to bring along a friend on our beach trips. Adulthood brought me trips to the beach with my BFF, and I’ve even enjoyed solitude at the ocean on business trips. I shared my love of the beach with my own family, and now my children and grandchildren take pleasure in their beach trips.
So, it’s no surprise that I’ve finally written a story with my characters visiting a beach. I enjoyed writing Just You and Me, where Allison and Jim’s adventures take place at Panama City Beach, Florida, in 1958 before the location became a favorite destination for Spring Breakers.
I began writing Just You and Me on September 6, 2020. In October that year, my husband passed away. He was a great supporter of my writing, and I knew he would want me to finish this book. I completed the first draft of Just You and Me in late January 2021. Then came the editing of the first draft and polishing the story for publication, which is more difficult for me than writing the first draft.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I need total quiet and solitude when I write. I don’t outline my story before writing it. I’m what is called a pantster–I write from the seat of my pants. However, before beginning a novel, I ponder ideas about the beginning and end of the story. I’m blessed to have never had writers’ block where nothing comes to mind that I can write about.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
As a reader, my all-time favorite book is Gone with the Wind. There are so many authors I love to read. If I tried to list them, I’d probably leave out somebody. I enjoy reading clean and wholesome romances, romantic suspense, and mysteries. When I began writing, I kept it to myself. Many people describe writers as introverts. That was me—truly a closet writer. So my inspiration came solely from God. Then I met Karen Ball—author, editor, and literary agent—and she is a great inspiration to me.

What are you working on now?
After I finish a book, I usually take a short break from writing and spend time getting the word out about the new book.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a newsletter where I announce my new books. Awesome Gang and other websites like it are great outlets for helping to promote my books. And I keep my fans on Facebook up-to-date on my writing.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new writers would be to have patience. Traditional publishing is a long road. That’s why many authors have turned to self-publishing. Whatever path you choose, write the best you can, stay determined, and remain positive.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t ever give up.

What are you reading now?
I was excited to recently find a copy of Kelly Irvin’s first romantic suspense novel, A Deadly Wilderness, published in 2010. I’ve just started reading it.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ll have a Christmas novella to come out later this year.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, Rooms by James Rubart, and The Familiar Stranger by Christina Tarabochia. I could read these books over and over.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a medical researcher and an avid reader. I have published one book so far. This book is a work of fiction, still given the possibility of different worlds around us, it may be possible in one of them. I have had a passion for writing since childhood and have been writing since then. Still, I never thought of publishing my work.
So what happened? How did I finish my book? Well, Pandemic struck the world, and surprisingly, I had some time to finish my story. Yet, writing and weaving stories is a time-consuming task. Even if this is a fiction story, I have researched extensively on the Peshwa history, time travel, and regression therapies.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my book is The Odd Life of Bethany Sutterfield. A lot of things inspired me to write this book. I am a fan of historical fiction and mystery and wanted to write something in those lines. Also, my scientific knowledge always spills into my writing. Around 2017 I was working on a sleep study where I was interviewing patients with nightmares and depression. Those stories also inspired me to flesh out the main character.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I feel like I write best when I am traveling which is unusual because generally, people need a quiet place to write but my ideas flow in chaos.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Agatha Christie’s books have hugely influenced me.

What are you working on now?
I am working on a cozy mystery.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I think Instagram and reaching out to bloggers is the best way for me to promote my books.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I am a new author myself, so I don’t know if I can advise anyone, but the only thing I can say is to be patient and believe in your story.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Your story may not be for everyone. Know your audience.

What are you reading now?
I am reading Behind her eyes by Sarah Pinborough.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am working on a cozy mystery.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot: The Complete Short Stories, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Matilda by Roal Dahl

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I grew up outside of Arizona on a ranch. Today I work on a cranberry farm in Wisconsin. I’m married with two kids. I have written two books: Milwaukee’s Revenge and Bow Season. Milwaukee’s Revenge is about a young couple who get attacked during a BLM riot in Milwaukee. The police look the other way and it becomes a race between a man out for revenge and the one detective who is trying to do the right thing… This was written in 2017 and published in March. (Crazy Timing)

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Bow Season is my latest book. An unlikely pair of detectives find a girl shot in the Northwoods of Wisconsin during bow season. The crime scene matches one from twelve years ago. The duo dives into a winding case that connects the two girls. This book has lots of banter and will leave you guessing until the end. My inspiration would be shows like True Detective.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write on my couch with the television on mute.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Gillian Flynn, James Patterson, and Stephen King are my favorites.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a book called “The Factory”

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon Ads

Do you have any advice for new authors?
In my opinion, try to write every day! Even if it’s just a little, keep moving forward.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you want to write a book, go write it. Don’t be a person who says they’d like to but they never have time. Nobody has time!

What are you reading now?
A Time to Kill by John Grisham

What’s next for you as a writer?
My plan is to finish “The Factory” this summer and then to either start on a sequel to “Bow Season” or try a western.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Lonesome Dove, Dead Man’s Walk, Comanche Moon, and Streets of Laredo… My favorite book and it’s running mates. It helps that they’re all really long too.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
For more than 30 years I’ve been a professional writer — an award-winning journalist, adman, PR professional and novelist, with one book to my credit.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I published my first novel, “Bad Rabbi,” a story inspired by a real life murder-for-hire case, in 2018. The story was inspired by the case of Rabbi Fred Neulander of Cherry Hill, N.J., who for years had a reputation as a womanizer. After falling in love with a woman outside his marriage he hired two thugs to kill his wife, a successful businesswoman/baker.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I need quiet but I can write anywhere.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many. I love many of the great 19th century writers like Dostoevsky but also modern greats like Donna Tartt, John Updike and Larry McMurtry.

What are you working on now?
Some short stories and a novella that could develop into a full novel.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get a job writing news – it’s a lot of fun and you will write every day.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write in the active voice and use strong verbs.

What are you reading now?
A Tale of Two Cities.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing, editing, rewriting.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, the Rabbit series by John Updike.

Jann Tomasko

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I currently reside in Las Vegas, Nevada but that could change next year, next month, or even next week. I was born and grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and up until my late twenties, I had no desire to leave let alone relocate to the other side of the country. Somewhere around turning the age of 30 ignited some type of feeling that there must be something better out there and look beyond the Pennsylvania borders. I moved to North Carolina in a town not too far from the shore and lived there for almost 2 years but then environmental circumstances (Hurricanes!) made me look elsewhere. I returned to Pennsylvania but not in Pittsburgh but further north towards the Erie direction and stayed there for a few years. Since then, I’ve lived on an Indian Reservation in Arizona and different places in Las Vegas and currently live as the token Caucasian what could best be described as a ghetto of North Las Vegas. My life has been interesting, truly a journey. I’ve encountered hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes and tornadoes. I’m here to safely say that I am still alive and kicking with only minor bruises and scars.
I have self-published 5 stories so far, I have another I am currently brainstorming on with a possible completion date as middle summer.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
MIKULA. The inspiration for this book came from watch too many B grade spaghetti westerns during the beginning of the pandemic. At first the idea was to do a spoof of the genre but as the book started to evolve, my attempts at humor weren’t very funny at least that was my take and the book took on a more serious direction. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some funny lines and situations, just not what I first envisioned.

The GAME-CHANGER. This book was written around the same time as MIKULA. They both started out as short stories but through the writing process became much more than that. The beginning of the pandemic influenced this as well as I had time on my hands that I did not anticipate so I took full advantage of the time. Television and movies inspired this one as it was more of a response to the unfairness and pain for victims and their families of serial killers. I tried to find a way to alleviate some of that pain through the story and I think I was successful with that goal.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I probably do. I don’t write anything down unless the idea has been in my head for a day or so and has time to develop. My scenes evolve like that and sort of write themselves. I find if I try to force something, the end product suffers but if I let the idea just swim around in my mind, an idea that I am happy with presents itself sooner or later.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I was heavily into science fiction and fantasy when I was in high school and college. Tolkien, Asimov, Dick, Harrison, Bradbury, just to name a few. The original Twilight Zone and Night Gallery series had a huge influence on me and still does. None of more stories are alike in theme or situations so I find whatever idea I can put a beginning, middle, and end to and still find it interesting, then I will attempt to flush the idea out to its fullest. There are many 5 to 9 page starts that I stopped working on because they didn’t engage me as a writer, how can I expect someone to want to read something I don’t really want to write?

What are you working on now?
A story that evolves through decades and the changes time places on the way we think and act as we continue to gather experiences and knowledge. As I age, I start to question much more than I did when I was say 25 or 30 so my main characters reflect that and some of that directly influences the dialogue. I don’t want to give to much away but it will be more political than anything I have ever done.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My website, janntomasko.net

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I think you have to have confidence in the story you want to tell. Accept criticism but remember what you want to say in the end. It’s your story, tell it the way you want.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Advice on self-publishing. I actually took a 2-3 hour noncredit course at the local community college on how to do it. Otherwise my first story (But I Didn’t Kill You!) would still be on my bookshelf collecting more dust.

What are you reading now?
I always have at least 2 books going at one time. I have been doing some research for my current project but I always need some pleasure reading which is usually light and about music, movies, or sports. What ever titles I would list here would be finished in a week or two so no reason to list them.

What’s next for you as a writer?
To become better at marketing myself and my brand.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That’s tough. I wrote an article years ago about the same situation but replacing albums instead of books. I had to make the list 25 because I couldn’t whittle it down to 10 let alone 3 or 4. I have never reread a book in my life and pass it along when I am done so to answer the question honestly. I would want all of my books with me because I designed all of the covers and am very proud of what’s inside and outside of each and every one of them.

M. Curtis McCoy

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I didn’t start writing my first book until after I was diagnosed with a malignant glioblastoma (brain tumor). I was given 60-90 days to live, with “zero chance of survival.” That was over ten years ago.

Now, I make it a point to live a life that brings inspiration & joy to others. I love interviewing successful leaders & sharing their insights with my audience!

At this point, I’ve published four books, but I’m blessed to be doing this full-time now! It’s incredible to live life on my own terms & work around my own schedule, doing podcast interviews & videos that stream to my channel on Amazon Fire TV! If you have a new smart TV, search “M. Curtis McCoy”, or “Success, Motivation & Inspiration” on Amazon Fire TV & let me know what you think of my show!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader” is the title of my most recent book.

I’ve always enjoyed motivational talks, pumped-up workout music, & inspirational books. Each day, I commit to doing something to improve. In 2015 I launched “Success, Motivation & Inspiration” as a blog to motivate & inspire others to achieve more in their lives.

Around the same time, I began connecting with aspiring entrepreneurs & seasoned experts. I was looking for others who wanted to increase their business & expand their market presence. I used the blog to jot down thoughts when I discovered something that inspired me.

As my social media groups gained thousands of members globally, I started receiving calls & messages from people whose lives had improved because of the principles I shared. Others reached out for guidance or advice on how to become successful.

I started spending time with successful people who were achieving improvement in their own lives. Many of these new friends had created lifestyles that allowed them to do things that others could only imagine.

The more time I spent around successful friends, the more ideas & opportunities started falling into my lap. Even though I wasn’t concentrating on writing or social media, interest from readers continued to grow.

Why Did I Start Writing This Book?
One night I received a call from someone who was contemplating suicide. Desperate for hope, this individual told me they didn’t know why, but they joined the Success, Motivation & Inspiration Facebook group while trying to decide if they should end their life or not. Thankfully, I got a chance to talk with them before they made a terrible decision. We talked about how they felt as if they had no chance of being anything but a failure. That’s when I began to realize this project deserved additional attention. When I launched the website a couple of years earlier, it was just a hobby. I just wanted to help prospective entrepreneurs in my free time.

After this call, I decided to include real-life stories & interviews with people who chose to improve their lives. I’ve interviewed professional athletes, preachers, wealthy investors, inventors, expert negotiators, & even ex-convicts turned entrepreneurs.

In “How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader”, I mix these interviews with life lessons that apply to business, relationships, & all aspects of being truly successful. I hope this book will help you achieve your ambitions, motivate you never to give up, & inspire you to pursue greatness.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write books & create content as a way to influence the world positively. Because money is not my primary reason for writing, I write each chapter of my books as a blog post that is free for the world to read. I was advised against putting every chapter out for free.

It’s actually been a great (accidental) marketing strategy because many book sales come from people reading a blog post & deciding to buy my books.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I typically read ~6 books per month as part of my daily routine.

I love the Book of Proverbs in the Bible. I often re-read “How To Win Friends & Influence People” by Dale Carnegie.

“Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill is another favorite!

“The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey is a favorite of mine.

My memory is absolutely terrible after surviving brain cancer, so reading & re-reading books often help me keep sharp.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m doing a lot of research on growing my M. Curtis McCoy personal brand via social networks, guest blogging, podcast interviews, radio interviews, etc.

I’ve read a dozen books on personal branding, & I’m taking some online classes as well. I currently only have ~600,000 followers across all platforms, but I think my next book will be on personal branding: what works & what doesn’t.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Awesome Gang is… AWESOME!

I’ve also been getting a lot of sales from https://instagram.com/MCurtisMcCoy/ & from my author page on https://facebook.com.com/MCurtisMcCoy/

I’ve been invited to speak at Caesar’s Palace & other venues that helped create brand recognition for me as an author.

I wasn’t a celebrity. In fact, I don’t think anyone knew who I was when I started writing my first book. I think creating a personal brand is necessary for every author who plans on doing this full-time.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
You can do this! Just start writing & get your thoughts on paper (or your blog). There’s always time to edit & edit again, but you won’t get them back if you don’t put the words on paper (or blog, etc.)

A quick suggestion for new authors: Buy your name as a domain name! If someone searches for your name, and there’s no website, or worse: if it takes them to a site you don’t own, that’s not good!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’m interviewing successful leaders every week on my Amazon TV show & on the “Success, Motivation & Inspiration” podcast, so I receive an incredible amount of great advice.

The advice I’m about to share was actually given to me when I was young. My mom says, “no one has time to worry about what you’re doing because they’re too worried about how they look to other people.”

We often feel shy to talk in front of a crowd or be the first couple on the dance floor, but everyone else is self-conscious too. Stop worrying & enjoy yourself!

What are you reading now?
Author Laura Bull surprised me with a copy of her newest book, “From Individual to Empire: A Guide to Building an Authentic and Powerful Brand”. I’m reading it for a second time this week, and I’m really enjoying the lessons she shares!

My friend, H.J. Chammas, is an award-winning best-selling author and self-made “Employee Millionaire” who has achieved financial freedom by investing in rental properties throughout Asia, Dubai, and Europe. I’m listening to “The 4 Stages of Building Wealth: How to Achieve Financial Freedom Before Leaving Your Day Job” again on Audible & always learn something new from his books as well!

What’s next for you as a writer?
Right now, I’m working to build the M. Curtis McCoy brand & my goal is to get the blue (verified) checkmark on the social platforms I’m active on. That seems to provide credibility when potential readers search for an author.

I’m also planning to spend some time traveling the world & writing in foreign countries soon.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1.) The Bible. That may be cheating because there are so many great books crammed into one.
2.) A book on wilderness survival.
3.) A book about how to build boats.

Since this is a theoretical question, I’d also bring my phone (with a ton of audiobooks downloaded) & a solar charger.

I may not ever use the book on wilderness survival or boat building until I memorized each book I had downloaded.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is the first book I’ve written but it’s not the only writing I’ve done. I workshopped a musical I created (book, music and lyrics) in NYC for many years before having twins. (Best project ever!) Now that my kids have graduated from college, I’m back to pursuing my passion for writing.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my book is Our Better Selves. It is a memoir that details the difficult time in my life and how I learned to overcome the obstacles I faced during this time period and in the aftermath the events.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write everything down quickly and sort through it all later. One time, I wrote 20K words in one day. Sometimes, things just pour out of me. I think it’s because I’m always writing in my head and when I get a chance to put it in a document, it comes out in large chunks!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Margaret Atwood, Joyce Carole Oats, Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Jean Rhys, Virginia Woolf

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a podcast to address my other passion, cooking!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m really new at this so I have a lot to learn. So far, I have learned quite a bit by watching videos on YouTube, specifically by Joanna Penn of The Creative Penn.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
When I first started writing this memoir, I thought I would be done in less than a year because I wrote the first draft in less than three months. I got so much positive feedback, I thought I was close to being done. But I kept revising because it really needed it. Three years and 16 draft/revisions later, it is a much better book and one I’m really proud to present. Writing is a craft and a good book takes time to write.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It’s cliche but don’t be afraid to kill your darlings. Get rid of anything in your manuscript that doesn’t add to telling the story.

What are you reading now?
A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m collaborating with a friend on a work of fiction.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Sophie’s Choice
The Handmaid’s Tale
The Color Purple
Their Eyes were Watching God
