Paul McCracken

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am Paul, I’m 30 and I am a crime fiction author from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

I currently have two books on Amazon with a third on the way. All of my books are within the crime genre and are set in Northern Ireland, mostly in and around Belfast.
I have just finished my forth book which I have started submitting to publishers.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book to come out is called The Last Rains Of Winter, being published by PM Books. I was heavily inspired by the American author, Richard Laymon at the time of writing this book. I was very interested in the idea of morality and how some people may justify murder in their own minds. I wanted to blur the lines between right and wrong, to make the reader make up their own minds if the main character was a monster or the result of his circumstances.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I used to believe that I had to be in a certain mindset or it had to be a certain time to write. This then added fuel to the fire when it came to writers block until I realized that there is no perfect mood or timing to start from.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Endless Night by Richard Laymon
Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone by Dennis Lehane

What are you working on now?
I’ve just finished and began submitting my forth book. I intend on taking a short break from writing to free up time for other things. But with that being said, I have another book sitting waiting which

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My author website: PaulMcCrackenBooks.com

&

My Amazon page: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Paul-McCracken/e/B07BJ93BBP/ref=dp_byline_cont_pop_book_1

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stay true to your vision and don’t change it to suit an audience or someone of a certain position e.g an agent.

Everyone has different tastes in what books are good and bad so try not to take criticisms to heart. But consider criticism and take it onboard, grow and learn from it. You’re only as good as your next book.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Even professionals can offer bad advice.

What are you reading now?
Nothing right now but I plan to get book 2 in Iain Kelly’s State trilogy, having enjoyed the first installment.

What’s next for you as a writer?
To try and promote my current novels which are available now as well as look to writing two others I have on standby.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Count Of Monte Cristo
Endless Night
Mystic River

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I write fantasy fiction and poetry, and I have a strong interest in mythology and folklore. I just published my second book, Shadowlands Poetry, in 2020.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent book is Shadowlands Poetry. The inspiration for this book of poetry was to focus on the fact that even in the darkness there is light. You cannot have the darkness without the light – which I thought was a fitting message for how chaotic the world has been in 2020.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I typically write the first draft of a book by hand. I buy a new notebook and new ink for one of my fountain pens and get writing!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Neil Gaiman, Angela Carter, Ray Bradbury, H. P. Lovecraft, M. R. James, and Edgar Allan Poe are the classics for me. Any anything folklore (Brothers Grimm).

What are you working on now?
I’m currently editing Healer of Sorrows (Book One Shadowlands Saga), which will be part of a fantasy fiction series. I’m very excited about this series, because it combines Norse mythology and strong female characters.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m new to promoting my books, but I’m very happy with awesomegang. com, discountbookman.com, and pretty-hot.com.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Try to write 100 words every single day. It can be complete jibberish, but writing daily keeps you inspired about writing and will give you the foundation of a good habit.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Writing is not a special skill that you are born with. Anyone can write and publish their work. Writing is a work ethic, so keep at it!

What are you reading now?
Sky in the Deep (Adrienne Young)

What’s next for you as a writer?
I will continue to publish poetry and fiction. I’m looking forward to publishing 3 books in 2021: YA, poetry, and fantasy fiction.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Complete works of Edgar Allan Poe, Graveyard Book (Neil Gaiman), and the Bloody Chamber (Angela Carter).

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a Finnish indie author who writes in English. I published my first fantasy novel, Strands of Existence 1: Island Girl, at the end of August 2020, and now I’m trying to get the sequel ready for next autumn at the latest. Even though this is my first book, I’ve always written stories. The first time I tried to make a book I was 5 years old. I had paper, a stapler, and crayons so there was nothing to stop me. I still have it in a box somewhere.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest, and first book, is called Strands of Existence 1: Island Girl. The stories I write just sort of come to me, and I see them as a movie playing in my head. I usually get a name of a character and then I start to get a feel about who they are, where they are from, and what their world is like. I love building different worlds and getting to explore them and their laws and magic.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I cannot sit normally when writing. I always sit cross-legged with my legs on the chair under me. If I don’t, I start to fidget so much the screen shakes.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My mother read the LoRT trilogy to me when I was 5, so that definitely did the trick in turning me into a life-long fantasy lover. As an adult, I find I like Le Guin more when it comes to style. But oddly enough, I think I read more classics than I read anything else. I really like Dostojevski, Blake, Austen, and Milton. Then there is one Swedish author called Astrid Lindgren who wrote my favorite book in the world which makes me cry each time I read it. It’s called the Brothers Lionheart. It just speaks to me with its bittersweet beginning and ending.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on the sequel to Island Girl. As the first book leaves the story more or less open, I need to get the next part out soon. I’m also working on the next two installments to the series as it will very likely have four parts in total.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Oh, I’m just starting out, so I don’t have much experience in this. I’ve gotten some lovely reviews on Goodreads by just getting to know other authors in similar genres. It’s fun and beneficial.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just to trust yourself and not to give up too soon. The only thing I regret so far with going indie is that I waited so long. But that doesn’t mean you should rush with the work itself, polish it, have people read it, and listen to the criticism when it’s reasonable.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Sit your butt on the chair and write. It’s a job like any other.

What are you reading now?
I’m actually reading LoTR to my daughter at the moment, so making that into a family tradition. When I get a few minutes to myself, I try to sneak in some poetry or a book by another newbie author I’ve befriended during all of this.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Trying to learn marketing I suppose. I have my authorly escapades pretty set with 3 books still to come in the series so I get to travel with the current characters for quite a while still.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Brothers Lionheart. I can read it a thousand times and not get bored. Milton’s Paradise Lost. Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. And any credible survival guide.

It’s inspired by the Victorian history of the Pacific Northwest, where I live and how people have been enchanted with ghosts and paranormal events on the west coast.

Just that I stay up late at night and get up at 5 in the morning to write.

What are you working on now?
I have a 3 book high fantasy romance in the works Sword of Cho Nisi is an adult high fantasy romance, between a young princess whose goal is to be a warrior until she makes a fatal mistake, costing her everything she’s ever hoped to have…

…and a young man who’s thrust upon a throne he never wanted, is pitted against an enemy he never asked for, and falls in love with a woman he is forced to exile.

But there’s a lot more than a love story to Sword of Cho Nisi in this trilogy.

There are kings, and emperors, castles and river towns, skrua, falcons, mountain giants, a dragon and a wizard who has gained enough power to rule the world but seeks one more treasure…

…to gain immortality at the expense of mankind.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
BookBub is the only one that I’ve had a lot of success with but I’m hoping Awesome Gang pulls through for me!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep at it and do it for the love of doing it. Only then will it be worth the while.

What are you reading now?
James Michener Journey

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a year’s worth of editing and marketing to do on this series. I want to write some short stories to go with it for my newsletter subscribers.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d take a Bible and probably Tolkien’s The Silmarillion which I’ve never read but want to. I don’t normally read books over again, there are too many I haven’t read. So it would be more a wish list, like more of Lewis’ works.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book, The Frozen Abyss [coming out March 14th, 2021] is the second book of a fantasy trilogy.
I first started working on this story when I was a teen and have since then transformed the world over and over again until I was please with it. I found inspiration from my own life, the strong women in it, and music. There is always music.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I make a song playlist before even writing the first sentence. I use mainly classical/instrumental music that helps me set the scene in my head.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I found influence in Amanda Quick’s books and Julie Garwood. I love their take on romance and the way they write their female leads.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the second edition of my first book, The Hummingbird Effect.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still figuring it out, but as of now, I found all social media platforms a good start.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t be afraid to write down your fears.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I was told to insert part of my soul in every character I create.

What are you reading now?
The Dutchess Hunt by Jennifer Haymore.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m planning on tackling more historical themes and combine them with fantasy elements. As well as possible retellings of some classics.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
This is hard!
Definitely Ravished by Amanda Quick, The Bride by Julie Garwood, and maybe some sort of Pride and Prejudice variation.

I would take
1. The soul of Rumi

4. When the mystic meets a starfish by Myself if that is allowed ( On a humour note )
