Do you have any unusual writing habits?

I personally do not have a well worn marketing strategy. I mainly focus on creating the books. I plan on trying to methods to see what sticks.

Too much to count. Could not choose a best.

Keep writing picture books for kids about God and books on political theory.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in Yorkshire, England, which is one of the most beautiful places in England, and have spent a great part of my life exploring it. As a result, I have now just published my 5th book about my travels and adventures across the north of England, often accompanied by my dysfunctional friends. We have hiked, camped, and been lost along the way, but at every stage, we have had fantastic adventure after fantastic adventure and created lifelong memories to treasure forever.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Walk on the Wild Side sees me walking a relatively short route through the beautiful dales and hills of the Yorkshire Wolds. I wanted to try something a bit more local, and I was very surprised at what I found. This land is more ancient than I could have ever imagined, and has a wealth of interesting stories to tell, every one better than the last.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am a solitary writer, as are most people I would imagine, but lately I have been writing at the same time as home-schooling my son Max, who is ten, and it has gone surprisingly well.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Bill Bryson has been a big influence, as has Douglas Adams, who both appear to have a dry but incredibly funny sense of humour.

What are you working on now?
My tan.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social media doesn’t work for me, so I tend to start with Awesome Gang and go from there. I am trying to build links to the local newspaper, who seem quite willing to help out.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be persistent. Don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do anything, ever.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Be persistent. Don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do anything, ever. Seriously, never give up.

What are you reading now?
I have just discovered a number of Indiana Jones books that I am slowly making my way through.

What’s next for you as a writer?
There are a couple of ideas rattling around in my head, but I think the next thing for me to do is to stop and take stock before I commit myself to any particular direction.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring along Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, of course, because it is funny, as well as The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, just because it is such a long book and would keep me busy. I would probably need to read it more that once as well, in order to fully appreciate it.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I refuse to admit how long ago I decided to write novels, but it was a LONG time ago. I took several detours along the way, serving at US embassies around the world, earning a D.Phil. at Oxford, teaching senior military officers at the Naval War College in Newport, RI (USA), and building my dream house with a view of the water (I needed a place to write, didn’t I?). When I’m not writing or reading JD Robb books (yet again), I’m is active in several writing groups and runs a charitable non-profit foundation.

I’ve written six books so far, but Home Waters is the first I’ve let “out in the world.”

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My contemporary novel, Home Waters, was inspired by my obsession with the ocean, particularly Narragansett Bay where I live. I know I’m not alone in being inspired by the ocean; I look out at the water and feel like a knot inside of me relaxes and lets go. In Home Waters, the setting affects the main characters in concrete ways.
The other thing that inspired me was the answer I came up with when I asked myself,
what if? In this case, what if a scientist discovered a serious threat to the waters on
which he lived and then, while trying to deal with that, a family crisis explodes in his lap?
We all have families and work we care about; how do we cope when they both reach crisis point at the same time?

I’m inspired by books that are fun and I try to keep that in mind in my own writing. If I want a lecture, I read non-fiction. If I read a novel, I want to be entertained.

BTW, I hope to use my love of baseball in a book one day soon.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Is it unusual that I have to be able to see a body of water in order to write?

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Since I’m a voracious reader and have been my whole life, too many to count. But that’s a bit vague.
• Years ago I read a series of novels by Nora Roberts set on Chesapeake Bay and I was completely enthralled.
• My story is different in virtually every specific, but it does have something in common with those Chesapeake Bay books (in addition to the type of setting).
In both:
o The characters care deeply about family, but also have serious careers they work hard at and that matter to them.
o They struggle to balance the two and it isn’t easy.
That’s pretty much the task I give my characters in Home Waters: how do you balance work and family when both need you desperately? I have to confess, my characters surprised me by figuring out smarter solutions that I, as the author, started out with. Things us ordinary people can help make a reality.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on the second book in the Narragansett Bay series. A supporting character in Home Waters is the focus of book two.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Countdown deal on Amazon with promotion on Awesome Gang

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t expect instant success. This novel-writing thing is challenging and there is a lot to learn. Be persistent; you’ll get there.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Lisa Cron’s book, Story Genius. She shows you how our brains crave story (and what about stories our brains are looking for).

What are you reading now?
JD Robb, Origin in Death and Michael Lewis, The Undoing Project. I just finished Lisa Garner’s Before She Disappeared (highly recommend).

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finish book two in this series. Get the word out on Home Waters.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
JD Robb’s Survivor in Death; Nora Robert’s Chesapeake Blue; Abraham Verghese’s Cutting for Stone; and Deborah Cramer’s Great Waters.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
To date I have written five full length novels and three novellas. All but one are historical fiction. I went down the rabbit hole of contemporary romance when I wrote On the Trail of Love, about a girl who inherits a mechanical bull business. My first two early historicals, A Secret Hope, set in ancient Ireland, and The Fury of Dragons, set in Roman Britain, were both inspired by St. Patrick’s early writings.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Test of Gold is Book 1 in the Hearts of Gold trilogy. It is set during the Gilded Age in New York City. Think Downton Abbey, but in turn-of-the-century New York. The true story of Consuelo Vanderbilt inspired my story. She was the original “Dollar Princess,” one of many young heiresses with multi-million dollar dowries who married cash-poor British aristocrats. Money exchanged for a royal title!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to listen to period appropriate music while writing. I also daydream about which actors and actresses could play the part of my characters.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Anya Seton, James Clavell, Diane Gabaldon, Francine Rivers, and Larry McMurtry, to name a few.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on the second book in the Hearts of Gold trilogy, called Threads of Gold. I have an unusual main male character in this story, with an unusual birthmark. That’s all I’ll say!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I stay active on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. I also try to drive traffic to my website.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up! And take the long view. I started writing in 2004, and this is my first traditionally published novel. And most important, learn the craft and constantly try to improve.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Jodi Picoult’s quote: “You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.”

What are you reading now?
The Earl’s Lady Geologist by Alissa Baxter.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have ideas for a Western trails series and a sequel to my first two early historicals, A Secret Hope and The Fury of Dragons.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’m not sure I could survive with only four books! But I would take Shogun, Katharine, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Lonesome Dove, for sure.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Launching my first book this week!
I am a world traveler and mom to her four young children. I have visited over 25 countries and nearly all 50 states, dragging my kids wherever I can.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Passports and Pacifiers—Traveling the World, One Tantrum at a Time
I was inspired to write my book while in Scandinavia with my four children (7, 5, 3, 1). I had found a Kids-Fly-Free promo so we were spending significantly less than we would have to go many places near our home. The trip was so phenomenal and eye-opening to the kids and I wondered, how can I inspire more parents to travel with their kids?

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write a lot in my head as I’m falling asleep or putting a kid down for a nap. If I have my phone, I try to jot it down there so I don’t forget it in the morning. If it’s really good, I get out of bed and at least get a first pass on paper.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Bill Bryson and Christopher McDougall
Currently enjoying work by George Mahood – who I discovered while looking for comps!
Mary Laura Philpott (fellow alum), Michelle Obama, Kristin Hannah

What are you working on now?
Promoting my book which launches this month! Also, I’ve started writing my second book, similar in content to Passports and Pacifiers, but with a different spin. (It’s kind of hard to travel during a pandemic but we’re doing our best to stay entertained!)

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Since I’m launching my first book, I’m really just trying to get it out there. I’ve attended a lot of free classes on Amazon, Goodreads, and have been reaching out to do interviews and podcasts.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep at it. Don’t be afraid to fail.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Work hard.
Be kind.

What are you reading now?
About to start Commonwealth by Ann Patchett for my book club. I recently finished Mexican Gothic and Little Weirds which I liked for different reasons. I’ve also been reading Holes and The One and Only Ivan with my kids.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m excited to see where this takes me! I’ve taken a year off of corporate America to spend more time with my kids and focus on my writing.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
In a Sunburned Country, by Bill Bryson, to reminisce about my time in Australia, to laugh, and to truly freak out about being on a desert island.
To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
Maybe Unbroken to inspire me to survive?

H.R. van Adel

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written the first installment “Covenant of Blood” of a fantasy series called The Thayria Cycle.

I’ve also written a book called “The Police Are Not Your Friends.” It’s an anti-authority book aimed at kids, but at the same time it’s really not for kids.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Covenant of Blood” refers to a pact made between two anti-establishment characters prior to their rebellion against an entity known as the Sarasinian League.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do my best work in the morning and/or while fasting.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
By far and away my biggest influences are Hugh Cook and Robert Cormier.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the second book in The Thayria Cycle. I’m also writing a standalone novel set in the same world.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve no clue, and no real marketing strategy. I hate advertising (I use adblockers EVERYWHERE!) and don’t like the idea of pushing things on people.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing. Seek advice from readers and writers when you have to, but follow your instinct.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Work hard and be good to your mother.

What are you reading now?
I only read grimdark fantasy and military history.

What’s next for you as a writer?

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. A seriously good book about the Spanish Civil War that I can never remember the name of.
2. “I am the Cheese.”
3. Dunno.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been a romance author since 2009 and currently have over 30 published novel, shorts, and novellas. I also have over 20 audiobooks for fans like me of that format.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My upcoming release is titled, Mate Run: Pia. I’m a huge fan of science fiction futuristic romances. My heroine is a hospital worker who is nearing retirement and decides it’s past time she focused on love and marriage. To do so, she visits a matchmaking agency. In my world, humanity has been divided into two factions: infected and noninfected. The idea of this story came to me in 2019, before Covid. It’s interesting how life imitates fiction.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m totally emo when it comes to writing. I have to be in the right head space emotionally before I can write. This means any bit of stress can negatively impact my writing habits.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been a romance reader since the age of 13. All of the early romance writers who are still in the game, like Jayne Anne Krentz and many others, have had an influence. I pull a little bit of writing technique from many books, styles, and authors.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on book two of my Mate Run series: Cherise. She’s one of the infected, hiding among the noninfected. As a hunted woman, seeking a mate among the infected is risky, but she’s tired of being alone.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
LOL, like most authors, I’m still learning this promotion thing. I can’t say I have a best method but my goal is to become proficient in marketing.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write what you love. Don’t chase money or approval. If you love what you do, you’ll keep at it when the negative reviews come or the books don’t earn as much as you hoped.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Your best promotion is your next book.

What are you reading now?
I’m listening to Wait for It by Mariana Zappatta and Shadow Blade by J. C. Daniels.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Translation of my book catalogue into Spanish. Last month I had my short, Illicit Attraction, translated. My goal is to get at least 10 more translated this year.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d totally cheat. I’d get a solar powered battery charger and bring my iPad or Nook which are loaded with hundreds of titles. This way I won’t be limited to just a few.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I write Women’s Fiction and Romance.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book just released. It was book 4 in the Hideaway Lake series. When I wrote the series, we had stayed at this wonderful small town with a lake in the mountains of Pennsylvania. As I was sitting on the porch I knew there was a story to tell, so I told it and I’m still writing about that beautiful little place.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I’m always against a deadline. It is self-imposed but I like writing that way.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many. But in The Women’s Fiction category I would have to say, Pamela M Kelley, Rachel Hanna, and Kirstin Hannah to name a few. I could fill up this page with names of authors that have inspired me.

What are you working on now?
I’m still working on the Hideaway Lake series book 5, The Sisters of Summer.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love awesome gang <grins> and Bookbub to name a few.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes. Keep writing. The more you practice and get those books out there, the better of a writer you become. Nothing tops that.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never, ever give up. Such a simple sentence, but it’s so true.

What are you reading now?
I just finished a book on email marketing. I love to keep up with the trends and markets. I feel as if there is always something new happening. For pleasure reading, I just finished the Beach House by Rachel Hanna.

What’s next for you as a writer?
You never know. There is always a story to be told. I love what I do and am constantly making mental notes of another story to write about.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
First, my bible. Then, I’d take along a trilogy by Heather Graham. One Wore Blue, One Wore Gray, and One Rode West. It’s such a great series. I think I’d take along Kathy Gifford’s The Rock, the Road and the Rabbi. I’ve been meaning to read that for a long time. It’s in my library on my kindle.

Lynnette Clement

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Lynnette Clement is an author, radio co-host, and actress from Philadelphia, PA. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Education. Lynnette is passionate about helping people be their best self. She has written two books, a self-help book titled, Cheaters Never Win: How to Stop Cheating in Any Relationship or Never Start and the fiction novel, Ardent Grandeur.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of her latest book is the fiction novel, Ardent Grandeur, available on BarnesandNoble.com. Lynnette was inspired to write Ardent Grandeur, in effort to paint the picture of how our life decisions matter more than we think, because our decisions impact the individual as well as those around them. The intended purpose for the book Ardent Grandeur is to help people make better life decisions.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When writing, Lynnette has the habit of creating an outline first and come up with the chapter titles, so that she can organize my thoughts before she begins to write.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The books that have inspired Lynnette are: Barack Obama’s A Promised Land and Daymond John’s Rise and Grind.

What are you working on now?
Lynnette is currently working on the sequel to Ardent Grandeur, the fiction novel.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
http://lynnetteclementauthor.godaddysites.com/

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Lynnette’s advice for new authors is to figure out what you want to write about and why. What important impactful message “take away” do you want the readers to get from reading the content in your book. Then, figure out if you want to be a self-publisher or if you want to work with a well known publishing company, to do so you will need a literary agent, because most well known publishing companies will not accept “unsolicited manuscripts.” Do your research, the internet has a wealth of information about how to obtain a literary agent as well as how to self-publish, if you choose do. Before you submit your work to any one, make sure that your finished work is Copyrighted by the Copyright office. Do your Research, Research, Research. Research your topic to see if someone else has the same thoughts and ideas before you Publish your book, and Cite all sources.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice that Lynnette heard is, “Don’t worry about getting it perfect as you are writing, you will edit, revise, re-read, rephrase, and edit again a number of times, just get your thoughts out first and then go back to edit. Have someone else read over your work, because they might catch typos and errors that you might have missed and they might also have questions that will help you clarify the meaning in a rephrase to make what you are saying clear and easy to understand by all audiences.

What are you reading now?
Lynnette is currently reading, The Women’s Bible.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Lynnette is working on the sequel to Ardent Grandeur and trying to have her book, Ardent Grandeur transformed into a feature film.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If Lynnette was stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with her, she would bring, The Bible, Rise and Grind, Cheaters Never Win: How to Stop Cheating in Any Relationship or Never Start, and Ardent Grandeur.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve always enjoyed writing, but “life” got in the way of making it a priority. Between working to pay the bills and raising three kids while my husband had a busy deployment schedule in the Coast Guard, I somehow always managed to push the dream back. I started publishing some articles and short stories a few years and when the idea of Ellipsis came to me, I decided the time was finally right. It’s my debut novel, but I’m already working on another!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Ellipsis. Ellipsis really confronts one of my worst fears as a modern parent. It’s certainly a scenario I’d thought about before. I was inspired about the suspense portion though, which the title refers to (that ellipsis… you see on your phone when someone is typing), from a news story. In that story a woman had received a series of odd texts that greatly impacted her. I immediately knew I could pull a great story from that.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really, I’m pretty stereotypical- I do best with obscene amounts of caffeine and a cat nearby.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh geez so many! I’ve always been an avid reader. My book choices are so diverse it’s hard to narrow down on just one. My favorite author is James Mitchener, and my style and genre is absolutely nothing like his- but I do get a LOT of confidence from the fact he didn’t publish his first book until he was 40.

What are you working on now?
It doesn’t have a title yet… like Ellipsis, the protagonist is going to be a college girl, but her story is going in a very different direction.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Well I’m pretty new at this, let’s hope it’s Awesome Gang 😉

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write. Even if it’s for your eyes only, keep working that writing muscle.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
A writing mentor once told me the most important thing for any writer, was to have a strong voice. Know your voice, don’t attempt to be someone else.

What are you reading now?
I’m one of those people who “reads” on multiple platforms… I have this great read, The Hunter, by an indie author named Hannah Cole going on my kindle, and Night Road by Kristin Hannah on audiobook.

What’s next for you as a writer?
A continuation of honing my craft, and finding the stories I think need to be told.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Hawaii, Alaska, The Source, The Covenant. Yep, you know who my favorite author is.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a mother of 2 rambuctious boys under five years old, and run three businesses. I spent all of my self-development time learning how to juggle it all, while trying to keep a positive mindset. I decided to write a book about the lessons that I have learned that have helped me not just keep it together, but thrive.

I am a first time author and I am hopeful that a reader gets even one takeaway that will be a game changer for them.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Box That Bitch. I was scheduled to speak main platform at an association conference a few years back and I totally froze on stage during my rehearshal. That jerk of a voice in my head started screaming at me that I wasn’t good enough to be on that stage and I had nothing valauble to say to the 3K audience members that I was going to be talking to.

A couple of days later, when it came time to give my presentation, I was vulnerable with the audience and told them about my inner voice and just kind of off the cuff said, “I have been boxing that bitch for the last two days.” Everyone in the audience started laughing and after many people came up to me to tell me how their inner voice is such a jerk too and they struggled the same way I did. So that became the inspiration for the topic and title.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am a first time author, so I am not sure really what “normal” habits are. But I think for me I just try to write how I would have a conversation with someone.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many! I read 20-30 books per year. I love authors that are authentic and vulnerable. Brene Brown, Rachael Hollis, Joe Dispenza, David Goggins. So many more!

What are you working on now?
Launching my first book!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This is new to me, so I am starting with Amazon and my social media accounts. And learning about awesome sites like Awesome Gang!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just start. I had thought about writing a book for a long time and couldn’t get myself to get momentum. But then I started with an outline, and then grew it, and kept writing as things would come to my mind. The first draft was such a cluttered mess and I felt a little discouraged from it. But then with each new draft it got better and better until I could finally see it as a book. So just start, and be patient and kind to yourself throughout the process.

What are you reading now?
Atomic Habits, Dear Girls from Ali Wong (Hilarious!), and the Love Languages books

What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to make an impact with my book. We all have that inner voice in our heads trying to hold us back with fear and self-doubt and I want to share strategies that have helped me defeat that voice.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Well probably a book about surviving on an island for sure! Never read one of those so I would have to find one 🙂

And probably Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl because it would remind me to stay positive and make the most out of the situation.

And then definitely comedy because entertainment would be important. I am currently reading Ali Wong’s Dear Girls and laughing my butt off so I would take it with me to laugh.

I was semi-retired before the age of 50, but still acts as a specialist consultant on various business activities.

I live with my wife and two children in North Somerset, Bristol, UK.
I have just written my first book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Master the Art of Money | Achieve Financial Freedom

The book came about after my unsuccessful search for an all-encompassing educational financial book for my two children.
I wanted a book that covered all the important aspects of “money”, “saving” and “investing”, in an easy to follow, logical and informative way.
As I couldn’t find a single book anywhere that covered the broad range of financial subjects I wanted my children to learn about, including how to secure their own financial futures, I decided I would write my own, after all, I’ve been making, saving and investing money, for well over three decades now, so I know a thing or two about it.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Je pense vivement que chaque auteur a ses préférences vis à vis du ” comment ” , qui selon moi dépond majoritairement de l’inspiration qui, je le souligne, est inflexible.

What authors, or books have influenced you?

What are you working on now?
Je travaille sur mon nouveau roman, ” Il était une fois, un écrivain sans histoires” qui va paraitre le 13 février prochain, je suis impatiente de voir la réaction de mes lecteurs face à cet ouvrage

Do you have any advice for new authors?
C’est de ne pas lacher prise, ce n’est pas le rejet de la part d’une seule maison d’édition qui décidera de votre destinée dans votre journey d’écrivain

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Cette question m’a fait repensé à un conseil que ma mère n’a pas arreté de me répéter depuis toute petite, “Essaye encore, Essaye toujours,”

What are you reading now?
Je viens de commencer un livre de Guillaume Musso, ” Et après ”

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am the Cypres Family Distinguished Professor in Legal Studies in Business at Hofstra University’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business, a New York attorney and the author of non-fiction, fiction and poetry. To date, I have published eight textbooks on law-related subjects and two trade books on computer-related subjects through traditional publishers. I have also self-published four short story collections, two poetry collections, and two general reference books on intellectual property. I recently completed my first novel, Hire Lernin’, to be published by the summer of 2021.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I published two books in the past two months–Echoes of Dawn at Dusk: Collected Poems, Volume 2, and Echoes of the Mind’s Eye: 13 Speculative Fiction Short Stories. My latest completed book, however, is Hire Lernin’, my first novel that deals with the experience of a naïve, idealistic young lawyer who takes on the position of academic dean at a for-profit business school in New York City in the late 1980s unaware of the nature of the industry. He immediately sets out to implement meaningful changes to update stale courses and dated curricula without resources other than his own ingenuity, entrepreneurial spirit and hard work. Despite the odds, he quickly achieves unprecedented professional success , but the misalignment of his personal vision with that of the for-profit educational institution he serves creates personal and professional conflicts with unexpected consequences. The novel is fiction inspired from my experience at the start of my long academic career in circumstances similar to those faced by the protagonist. The issues it raises about both for-profit education and traditional non-profit community colleges and associate-degree-granting institutions that formerly provided non-academic, meaningful, affordable career training for students seeking skills-based training to make them marketable to employers in a short time are real, compelling, seldom explored and worthy of an open discussion that can lead to needed meaningful change.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
For my poetry and fiction, including my forthcoming novel, I compose at the keyboard. I do not use notes, outlining or engage in character development before I write. I have a general idea of where I want to go with a story or theme (usually) but more often than not the writing flows and moves freely in its own direction. I have very eclectic tastes and competencies, and because I write about things that I both know a good deal about and care about, my writing process is organic. Ideas flow onto the page and usually organize themselves like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle falling into place on their own.

My non-fiction, of course, is different. But even there I usually work from a very broad outline and directly from notes to what can be hundreds of hours of research. To clear my mind from intensive writing sessions, I often switch from a fiction project to non-fiction ones–and sometimes even take breaks to play a video game or work on some mindless chore like shoveling snow or mowing the lawn.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
For my fiction in particular, the list is quite long and varied–from Beowulf in the original old English, to Chaucer in middle English, to Shakespeare, Milton, Cervantes, Dante, Dickens, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Mary Shelley, H. G. Wells, Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Miller, George Bernard Shaw, Tennessee Williams, Arthur C. Clarke, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Robert A. Heinlein, Roger Zelazny, Terry Goodkind, Rod Serling, George R. R. Martin, Poul Andersen, Isaac Asimov, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and on and on through scores more. In my poetry, I have been influenced most by Shakespeare for his sonnets (and in drama for his plays), Milton, Pope, all the British Romantic poets–but especially Wordsworth, Blake, Coleridge and Shelley–Tirso de Molina, Federico Garcia Lorca (both for his poetry and plays in the original Spanish) and countless others.

What are you working on now?
I am putting the final editing touches on my first novel, Hire Lernin’–the complete first ten chapters in draft form are available for free preview at both Booksie (https://www.booksie.com/644807-hire-lernin) and Wattpad (https://www.wattpad.com/story/255625705-hire-lernin%27). Both sites also offer many samples of my published work–fiction, poetry, and law. Booksie features many sample poetry readings from both of my poetry collections.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I do very little promotion or advertising of my self-published work beyond my Twitter, Facebook and blogs as I am unwilling to spend the significant amounts of money for advertising and promotion that are required for significant results that nevertheless seldom pay for themselves in terms of actual sales. I also refuse to pay for “professional” reviews–a common practice these days. My textbooks are promoted by my publisher. My professional scholarly writing in refereed academic journals and law reviews is accessible in journals by subscription in libraries and is usually also either publicly accessible through publishers’ sites or through the Lexis/Nexis and West Law legal research databases.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read broadly but write in your own voice. As writers, we are each as unique as snowflakes. Imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery; it is at worst plagiarism and at best a grainy, false imitation of someone else’s art. Each of our voices is unique and contributes to the ongoing symphony that is humanity’s combined printed works. Write about things you know well and care about, but try to stay clear of the unholy trinity of me, myself and I in your writing–unless writing a memoir.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write what you know.

What are you reading now?
I’m re-reading A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin and A Grateful American by Gary Sinise. A three-novel, The Anna Davies Mystery Series by Rita Lee Chapman, is next on my reading list having just bought it on Amazon after purchasing the first book in the series, Missing in Egypt.

What’s next for you as a writer?
On my law-related professional writing, I hope to expand my A Primer on Immigration Law and Compliance mini-textbook published last year by Textbook Media Press and/or a general reference book on immigration law. Two scholarly articles completed this past fall will be out for review this spring– López, V. D., Avoiding the Legal Landmines Attendant to the Process of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Form I-9 Compliance, and López, V. D., When Legal Systems Clash: Why Foreign-Born Residents Fall Prey to Unscrupulous Notaries Public and What Can Be Done to Prevent It.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, the Complete Works of William Wordsworth, and the best survival guide I can find.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a new crime/suspense/thriller author. My debut book ‘Concrete Jungle’ is coming out on September 4th, 2021. It’s now available for pre-order on Amazon. I’ve been writing since I was eight-years-old. I’ve always loved reading and writing. It was always an escape to a different world. I’ve started my own freelance writing & photography company in 2014, called ‘Room with a View Productions.’ I currently reside in Hamilton, Ontario. I’m originally from Toronto, Ontario. I’m 38, engaged, and I love animals, especially cats!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my debut book is ‘Concrete Jungle,’ and its inspiration is the jungle we live in every day. The world. People are animals. Some are savages. Some are butterflies. It’s a dog-eat-dog world. My different experiences with all sorts of people are what has been its main inspiration. I love reading and watching crime/thrillers, romance, drama & suspense the most, some of which have also been inspirations.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t say unusual, per se—just a room with a view, some caffeine, nicotine & marijuana.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King and Susanna Kaysen are two of my favourite authors. ‘Girl, Interrupted’ is definitely one of my favourite books. I love everything King has ever written; ‘Misery’ is my favourite.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on getting everything perfect for the release of ‘Concrete Jungle,’ as it’s still in its editing & marketing stages.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use Social Media definitely. I also run my own website, ‘Room with a View Productions,’ and I promote all things ‘Concrete Jungle’ there as well. I do post my work on other websites to gain feedback. Vocal Media is a site that I use often and that I like a lot.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up and write every day. Persistence over perfection!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.” -Muhammad Ali

I like to replace training with writing & editing. Editing is a bitch.

What are you reading now?
“I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer.” It’s is a true crime book by Michelle McNamara about the Golden State Killer. Rest in peace to her.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to begin working on my next book once ‘Concrete Jungle’ is closer to being complete.

I’d also like to work on a ‘Concrete Jungle’ related app. It will be story-based, with choices for each character. It’s a choose your own adventure type of app.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The books that I would bring would have to be:

“Misery” by Stephen King

“Girl, Interrupted” by Susanna Kaysen

“I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer” by Michelle McNamara.

“Chain Letter” by Christopher Pike

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a new author and i just published my debut novel last month.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first book is entitled “Escape From Guinea Island.” This book is a different take on the zombie genre. I’ve been a fan of that genre since i was a kid so i tried to create my own unique story.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I usually write around midnight when everyone else is asleep. The stillness of the night and complete silence helps me focus on writing.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Mainly, mystery authors like Harlan Coben, Dean Koontz, James Patterson & Jeff Lindsay. I love reading books that would make me guess about the ending.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the sequel book on my series “Escaping the Grave”.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Well, promoting on social media works best for me. Not only I have the chance to meet a lot of readers but also my fellow writers as well.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing and never give up. Not all people are born as storytellers. There are some stories that only you can be able to tell so it is your duty to give birth to those new ideas and concept.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There is no such thing as easy path or short cuts in life. But one thing is for sure, all our hardship will have an outcome in the end. It is just a matter of time so you have to be patient.

What are you reading now?
Ready Player Two

What’s next for you as a writer?
After I am done with my apocalyptic series, I will try to write a different genre such as YA and children’s book.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A Bible, an Encylopedia, a Dictionary and the World Atlas.
