Dr. Regine Muradian

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist, author, speaker, consultant, and mental health advocate. In my clinical practice, I work with children, adolescents, and adults who present with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and adjustment problems such as depression, anxiety, executive functioning, and ADHD. One of my passions is public speaking, and in my consultation work, I have spearheaded a variety of workshops on positive parenting, teen issues, and family conflict resolution. I am fluent in five languages and love to travel and learn about different cultures. I am also a mother of three children ages 15, 12, and 9.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My current and first published book is called, Franky and The Worry Bees. It was released on September, 30 2020. When COVID-19 hit in March 2020, I found how difficult it was to connect with my clients online. We were both adapting to telehealth and I could see how disconnected they were. I began sketching and using illustrations to help my clients express their negative thoughts. I created two bubbles one with bees inside it and the other was empty. The exercise was to imagine that the bees represented all the negative thoughts one felt. For example, “I am not good enough, I am not smart, I am not brave.” These negative thoughts feel very real to a child or person so the idea was to switch those negative thoughts into positive ones and write in the empty bubble the antonym of the negatives. For example, I am good enough, I am smart, I am brave.” The child, teen, or adult (yes my adult clients have enjoyed this exercise as well. What I discovered and by repeating the positives every day they actually started feeling better and more confident. My character Franky was then created and brought to life by my incredible illustrator Timna Green.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am not sure if this would be considered as unusual but I tend to draw out my ideas first. I can see the story unfold and then just start writing. I love writing articles and blogging so when I feel inspired I could write about 3-4 articles in a few hours. I also discovered my love of writing children’s books which was very spontaneous and not planned. Now I can’t stop writing and am creating a Franky series.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
One of my favorite children’s books is Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The main character August is so inspirational and has touched all my children as well. August just wanted to be treated normally despite his differences. I love that the book focuses on empathy, accepting others as they are. Nowadays many children are bullied for being different. Children with anxiety, just want to “feel normal.” I try to always normalize and empower children that they are not their disability or mental illness. When a child finds their inner passion and self-confidence it’s a game-changer. As a clinician, nothing makes me happier. When I saw this happen with my Franky character I knew I had to turn it into a story and share it with the world.

What are you working on now?
At this time, I am working on three new titles in the Franky series.
1. Franky and His Homeschool Adventures
2. Franky and His Special Talent
3. Franky and His International Adventures

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My website is www.reginemuradian.com I have a book tab where you can click and it will direct you to my amazon page.

I have also been promoting via Instagram, Twitter, and Linkedin

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Many in my profession or other authors have reached out to me asking about my journey. I love helping people and I had great advice offered to me as well during this process. My best recommendation is to not allow fear to get into the way. Writing, editing, re-writing, illustration creation is such a long process. I was patient and did not give up on the process. I was mindful and kept reminding myself during the difficult days that the end product will be beautiful and all worth it. Keep your vision and focus on the results!! I promise you if you do you will reach your goals.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Listen rather than offer advice especially with family.” This is one of the best advice I have received from my father who has been my mentor and greatest support. I recall him saying this to me as a child and it stuck with me. Interestingly most children and teens just want their parents to listen and not ask advice. This is something I teach my parents to listen and ask if their child wants their feedback or advice. This puts the person who needs to share in a position of control and creates peace and healing.

What are you reading now?
I have dedicated my reading time to my son. It’s a wonderful time to spend together where he chooses a book he’s interested in and I read a chapter and he reads another. This is our favorite time together before bedtime.

What’s next for you as a writer?
At this time I am busy for the rest of this year and 2021 with my three new titles in the Franky series. I am also a frequent contributor to various magazines and love blogging. You can check out my blog on my website and stay updated with my media contributions as well.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring:

1. Mindfulness by Ellen J. Langer
2. The Art Of Happiness by Dalai Lama
3. Cooking Wild by John Ash

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Alicia Searl is a Christian author that recently published her first devotional for moms entitled, Wounded. She hopes to offer you a little encouragement with her passion of pouring out her heart and sharing the real pursuit of happiness – Jesus!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Wounded was written out of a wounded heart. Alicia Searl shares her heartfelt stories of how she is constantly seeking truth to set her free to be the mom God is calling her to be. She realizes that failure is always an option, but with Christ, defeat doesn’t have to be. Like many moms, she yearns to be valued, craves deep and meaningful relationships, and is constantly searching to find calm in the chaos.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I actually love to write when my middle daughter is playing the piano, it inspires me. She plays beautifully and it gets my brain juices going.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Many Christian authors including Lysa Turkerst, Becky Thompson and Pricilla Shirer

What are you working on now?
Currently I am working on a tween devotional for girls. My heart really wants to speak truth to girls that are coming into the age of discovering who they are, more importantly who they are in Christ.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
As a new author I am still finding my groove and what works. I use social media and my website, but honestly I am not too techy and still fairly new to social media, so it’s all in God’s timing and all in His hands.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up! If you feel called to write, share your heart, your story. It truly matters!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Pray and pray some more about where God is leading your heart as a writer. Spend quiet time with Him just discussing your heart and where you want to go with each book and let Him guide you.

What are you reading now?
Doing a Bible Study on New Testament, just finished Triggers by Amber Lia and Wendy Speake. Honestly, I love Christian self help book, I need all the help I can get- ha!

What’s next for you as a writer?
Continue to work on the tween devotional, hopefully coming out the fall of 2021, entitled Chasing After Jesus. I also see in the near future writing a preschool devotional, and maybe even a couples devotional down the line.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Bible, yep that’s about the only book I would need. Maybe a few of the devotionals that have inspired my own writing.

Chuck Carr

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I must admit, I knew that I should be writing. Instead, I tried to do life different. It was a twenty-year dream to write a book, and the first monumental fear to overcome was actually starting. Authors face fears of many kinds, but if they don’t sit down and start writing, nothing will ever happen. In 2018 I suffered a traumatic brain injury that put me on the couch long enough to realize I needed to be writing, and haven’t stopped since. My first novel, “The Convergence,” is a dimly lit reflection of what my life lost in tragedy can become when God changes your eyesight. After that book was very successful, I continued writing, figuring I should write about what I know best, and decided to do a self-help booklet to help people through the struggles of wrestling grief. I lost a spouse in 2008. I know how hard life can be at that point of loss. I wanted to help as many people as I could to get through grief and loss. Now, just released last September was my memoir, an inspirational read of how a life lost in despair can be ignited, given hope, and lit for all the world to see. I want my life to mean something to others, inspire them, and see that there is always hope.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is “All That the Locusts Have Eaten: God’s Redemption Through Loss and Heartache.” After my accident, which fractured my skull in two places, I felt all the burden and pressure to be something I couldn’t be anymore. There was at least some permanent damage to my brain. I had already suffered the loss of a spouse, a divorce, and a church split, but now losing my health seemed like too much to bear. I was bound to a recliner 24/7 and became isolated and vulnerable to depression. This memoir is my true story of how I was lifted out of that dark hole of hardship and set on a new course of empowerment and purpose. I’m nothing other than an ordinary guy. If my life can be used to mean something, anybody’s can.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I suppose that of all my favorite places to write, sitting on the floor is the best. I’m not sure why. I have a desk. I have an office to write in. I have a kitchen table. I don’t know why those places don’t seem to be as productive as a floor, but when I sit down on the living room carpet, it seems like things flow better there than anywhere else. Of course coffee is another requirement.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
As far as authors, I admire a few people, but for different reasons. My mentor is one who has sold himself out to live for a cause higher than himself, and I highly respect him for it. Going all in is something when focusing on your life purpose is something I will always be thankful for learning from him. I admire a woman by the name of Ann Voskamp, though I have never met her, because she speaks my language, and I can identify with the words and pictures she paints in her books. I have been influenced by Kristin Hannah, because I love her style and the arrangement of the craft in her pages. Finally, I am inspired by Joni Eareckson Tada and Amy Bovaird, who both were dealt a bad hand of cards in life, though didn’t let it defeat them, turning to writing when life turned against them.

What are you working on now?
Currently I am working on a novel titled “Wonders In The Deep.” In my opinion it is the best work of my writing career, and I am extremely passionate about its debut. In the hands of editing right now, I hope to release it early 2021. Sometimes the most valuable lessons in life are learned at the hardest cost, and in this story spotlighting a grandfather and a grandson, they both learn things in unexpected fashion. It is a reflection of my own life, an allegory in ways, as I try to pass on the single most important lesson I’ve had to learn in my own personal life. Everybody has struggles in life. It’s what you do with them. Set on the rocky coastline of Maine, there are ships, rough seas, mysteries, and love to unfold.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This is a learning curve for me. I’ve tried about everything. It seems that putting on a clean shirt and being in the public eye seems to sell the most books so far lol. I do have a website that is very engaged with people looking for answers. I write about Christian topics ranging from grief and loss to spiritual growth to family life. I get a lot of traffic on the web.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write. Don’t stop. Write what you are passionate about. Pour your heart and emotions into the page. Don’t stop until those that read your words feel the exact thing you do.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
That’s a tough one to answer. I suppose in all honesty, it was advice that I was given after my first wife passed in 2008. At the time I was bottling anger and a host of other negative emotions. I wrote about this exact point in my life in the opening chapter of “The Convergence,” where I was advised to get my feelings out, no matter what they were. It’s tough to explain without rewriting the chapter, but holding resentment doesn’t do you any favors. God is bigger than the box we try to put him in. Other than that, I hold very close to my heart a Charles Spurgeon quote saying “a Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to a person that isn’t.” Simply makes sense to me.

What are you reading now?
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark T. Sullevin

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have big plans for book number five. I’m already into it, having done countless hours of research. It has been fun, another fiction inspirational read, one full of positive messages. I’m tackling social issues like disability in modern culture, the dichotomy of trying to live an honorable life in a world that lives the opposite yet seems to prosper anyway, and of course, a bit of a love story as well.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
First, the Bible. It is my inspiration, my roadmap, and the breath in my life. Second, my novel coming out soon Wonders In The Deep. I’ve read it five times now and it still does it for me each time. After those two, probably Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale and Hemmingwey’s Old Man and the Sea.

Leif Hardin

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve completed one novel with three more in various stages of development.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Duskbreaker: Inferno. In 2012, I attended a short story creative writing class at my local college. As part of an assignment, I wrote a story call Black Riders. As a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction like I Am Legend and the Fallout video game series, I knew I wanted that setting. The question was, what time period. I wanted to stray away from conventions or a modern or futuristic post-apocalyptic time frame. History is one of many passions, and it occurred to me that I hadn’t read or seen much in the way of early 20th century post-apocalyptic stories. The story stuck with me, and after some tweaking, it morphed into a novel.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
In a similar vein as Francine Prose, my desk faces a wall. It helps limit distractions from the outside world. That and I consume an unhealthy amount of sweet tea. Like a lot of authors, I have my music playlists. Depending on the genera I’m writing, I could listen to Industrial Metal, EBM and Aggrotech or the work of Akira Yamaoka.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Asimov, Clarke and Heinlein heavily influenced my early Science Fiction writings while Poe, Steven King, then later Clive Barker would influence my horror fiction. Now, I couldn’t peg the influences since I draw inspiration from multiple media sources.

What are you working on now?
Right now I’m working on a few projects, The Tower, a horror novel that is half finished. A science fiction piece centered on a crew of space salvagers and the sequel to Duskbreaker: Inferno called Duskbreaker: Tribunal.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Being the FNG to self publishing, I have little wisdom to pass on in this area. I’m learning as I go, but imagine that sights such as this one would be a great boost in the arena of promoting your work. That and social media.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
For new authors, I’d pass on a few things. First, stay humble, hustle hard and acknowledge there’s always room for improvement. Second, start promoting yourself and your work now, not after you’ve launched your book. Third, never give up on your dreams, keep working hard and chase down that accomplishment.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Wherever you find yourself at work or in your personal life, do the very best you can do and don’t fear failing. It’s not how many times you fall, it’s whether you get back up that matters.

What are you reading now?
At the moment nothing, I shy away from reading while working to avoid unintentional influences or the risk of copying an idea too closely.

What’s next for you as a writer?
To grow a community of readers and publish more of my work.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
FM 3-05.70 US Army Survival Manual, US Army Special Forces Medical Handbook ST 31-91B, a blank book to use as a journal. If I had a fourth, I’d probably take something like the US Tax Code. Not as reading material but for other, more practical applications.

Robert Locke

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written books on ADHD and also children’s stories. My most recent venture has been into satire and especially the crazy goings on in the UK.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Brits Are Bonkers.
They say that truth in satire is a valid definition. As surreal events merge into ridiculous facts, I am beginning to wonder if there is any need for satire at all. Often, the truth is much more fun and comic although it may often be tragic too like the UK’s initial response to COVID-19.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite authors are Doris Lessing, Lawrence Krauss, Oliver Sacks, and Joy Williams.

What are you working on now?
I am a top writer in humor and satire on Medium so I continue to write daily for that platform and these stories will become my next book. I aso write short stories, articles on mental health, life lessons and Italy where I live.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Dave Chesson on Kindlepreneur

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t go into it blindfolded.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write and experiment

What are you reading now?
I am reading Joy Williams. Her collection of stories called “The Visiting Privilege” borders on the surreal at times and this helps me generate ideas for my own writing.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Publish another collection of humorous essays

David Howden

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Cambridge, UK, and began drawing cartoons from an early age. After school at sixteen, I became an apprentice bookbinder restoring and binding leather books and journals by hand. A trade I have now been involved in for over thirty years.
My cartoons and updates on my writing can be viewed on my ‘David Howden Illustrator and Author’ page. Many cartoons used in my books, as well as work-in-progress shots from initial pencil to ink, are featured. Many of these were used in ‘The Tooth Bearer’ illustrated book.
My daughter provides much of the inspiration to write these books and also has helped with the drawings, submitting some of her own for the illustrated copy.
The Tooth Bearer is my first book to be published however I have started to work on the sequel.

If you are interested in knowing more about the world of ‘The Tooth Bearer’ then join my illustrator and author page on Facebook.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Tooth Bearer was inspired by the visits to my daughter by our regular Tooth Fairy called Tilly, who would often leave a note for us to read. As time progressed the world of Tilly grew and I decided to write the stories down.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
As I work as a full time Book Binder I try to write as much as I can in my spare time. Usually first thing at the weekend, and with a good cup of coffee helps.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I am loving the book ‘ That’s not all folks’ by Mel Blanc written around 1988. Having always loved the cartoons his voice was featured in I wanted to find out about the person.
I also enjoyed the Terry Pratchett series of books and in my youth read a lot of Stephen King.

What are you working on now?
I am working on the sequel to The Tooth Bearer and really enjoying being with the characters again.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am very new to promoting, which is why I am here. Usually though I post on my face book page.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be proud of what you have achieved, so many people don’t write their books and then wish they had.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Just go for it” by my wife.

What are you reading now?
Still reading Mel Blanc’s book plus a story my daughter has started on her own.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am enjoying the stories about the fairies and their friends, I think I’ll stick around here for a bit.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
First book would be how to build a working radio out of coconuts.
Second would be 101 ways to build a raft.
Third would be a copy of cooking with coconuts.
Forth would be a copy of The Tooth bearer as I’m always looking on ways to market it to the locals if I happen to meet any on my way home.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written 10 books now. It’s a milestone for me. Most are romantic fiction, what I mean is that they are really a mix of fiction and romance. There is a lot going on, lots of emotions, and some love to make you feel better about it all.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Sweet is my latest book. I wanted a strong badass heroine who wasn’t pretty bc she self harmed when she was younger but was so strong, so much more than looks. I paired her with the most handsome rockstar I could describe… and then I let them play.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I need a playlist that I play over and over and over until I can’t hear it anymore…

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Contemporary romance authors such as LJ Shen, Emma Scott but also French classics.

What are you working on now?
A new rock star series. 5 brothers and a secret…

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social media is a big one, of course. Give give give and sell is my motto. You can’t be always selling. But talk about you, your life, your other passion and you’ll get there eventually.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep going, listen to your voices, find what works for you!!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do not read your reviews on goodreads around release !!!

What are you reading now?
I’m reading a lot of poetry. My latest read is Awakend by Hydrus.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Publish some poetry, maybe dab into another genre.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Pablo Neruda’s poems
Dracula
The Iliad and the odyssey
