Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a husband, father of three teens (well, two teens and on who is knocking on the door) and I have been a writer for most of my life. I write mostly short fiction in the horror and dark fiction genres and my work has appeared in three books to date with a fourth being published in September.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Phantoms in the Moonlight (scheduled to be released on September 8) is an anthology that my Second Draft Podcast co-host, Alaine Greyson, came up with. The idea was to create an anthology of Halloween-themed stories that cross genres and utilized the particular focus and talents of the three contributing authors (myself, Alaine Greyson and Marie McGrath).

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know about unusual, but all of my first drafts are hand written in a notebook. The second draft of my story comes about while I am typing out the text into a Word document.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have always been a huge fan of Stephen King and his On Writing book has provided me with great advice and guidance along the way. Outside of the horror genre, Patrick Rothfuss has created some absolutely spellbinding stories that have a way of grabbing hold and not letting go until the last page.

What are you working on now?
I am working on a few short stories and I am getting my head around a series of stories that could potentially span multiple mediums (namely a podcast, a novel and a series of short stories). Once I start that, my immediate future will be spoken for.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have utilized a variety of Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites to promote the books and I am still feeling my way around to find the best way to market my stories.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get the first draft down on paper and don’t listen to the inner critic. There will be time to fix the story, patch up the plot holes and get rid of all the repeating words. When you get that first draft done, you have something to work with and that is a great feeling.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It’s never as bad as it looks.

If you only go by how things look the first time you take them in, you’re usually missing the point. Give things time and the tough times can become lessons that will make you and your craft better.

What are you reading now?
Year One by Nora Roberts. I grabbed it from the library before the world screeched to a halt and lo and behold the book is about a pandemic that demolishes the world as we know / knew it. It was tough getting into it just because of the subject matter hitting a little too close to home now, but I’m glad I stuck with it.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing my first novel is tops on my list and as I mentioned earlier I have a big project on the horizon that should be interesting.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
On Writing by Stephen King; The Wise Man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfuss; and The Diamond Throne by David Eddings would be the three books I would take as they all provide me with great amounts of entertainment, but as long as I had paper and a pen with me, On Writing would get me writing too.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Well, I’ve only published one book so far but I do have plans to continue the series I am working on. Currently, I have quite a lot of projects, I believe I have fourteen or so other books I have yet to complete. They range from murder mystery thrillers, to full-on fantasy novels. I am a huge fan of everything spooky and supernatural so a majority of my projects are focused around that.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Art of Seduction is my first novel I have ever completed, a lot of my book storylines come from recurring dreams that I have strangely enough. Usually when a dream sticks with me I write it down. I thought it was a really magnificent concept so I decided one night to brainstorm and eventually it sprouted into a novel and then into a series. I gathered a lot of inspiration from the 1900s, I love the look and just the lifestyle. I love the gothic vintage look to everything back then and I have an obsession with everything spooky and supernatural so I definitely gathered a lot of inspiration from horror/thriller movies.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Oh my, I’m quite strange when it comes to writing. Usually I have to be alone when I write because I just get so enveloped in what I’m writing, I can get quite mean when I get disturbed sometimes but I don’t mean too it’s just because I’m really focused. I do really love writing in a quiet room but I live in the city so that’s unlikely, so I usually listen to classical music. Music has a huge influence on what I’m writing so I have a lot playlists.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I grew with Harry Potter, I was completely obsessed with it growing up. I watched the movies when I was very young and I just loved every part of it. As I got older, just watching documentaries about J.K. Rowling completely inspired me because she went through a lot in her younger years and she worked very hard to get where she is today. Shakespeare is another who inspired me a lot, when I was going through Highschool, we had to study classic literature and I soon became obsessed with Shakespeare, I read everything I could get my hands on, I watched the movies and he became an absolute favourite of mine. Neil Gaiman is another author that has influenced me a lot, I love Coraline, and Stardust is one of my favourite novels of his. Edgar Allan Poe has influenced me a lot as well, the darkness of his poetry is just bewildering and I love it so much.

What are you working on now?
Currently I am working on a Science Fiction novel, I am a huge Science Fiction nerd and I love everything from Star Trek to Star Wars, basically I took all my Sci-Fi movie knowledge from The Matrix, Marvel, and the Alien franchise, that’s only naming a few though, I also gained some heavy inspiration from the show Firefly. So basically I’m trying to write my own Science Fiction novel, so we’ll see how it goes, I’m pretty excited.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Well since I am self-published, I’m not really good when it comes to promoting my book but I do try my best. Currently I have my own website and I’m on Instagram almost everyday. Everyday I’m learning better ways to promote my novel but it all takes time.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice to any new authors or aspiring writers would definitely be not to give up. My whole life I was always put down for wanting to be a writer, nobody believed in me and a lot of people told me I would never amount to anything and that my ideas were stupid and no one would ever want to read my stories. Don’t ever let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do, you have to believe in yourself and when you have your heart set on something, don’t let anyone change your mind. If you are truly passionate about something and believe in yourself, you can do anything.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard to be honest is that ‘You’re your own worst critic’. Throughout my life I’ve always been really hard on myself and I’m sure others are like that too, I would always negative talk myself and that’s horrible, you should never do that, beating yourself up is not healthy, you should be loving yourself, not trying to tear yourself down.

What are you reading now?
Well, currently I’m in between books. I did just finish ‘The Amityville Horror’, it was really good. I’m also in the middle of packing everything and getting ready to move but I have been meaning to sit back and get some reading done. I was reading ‘Helter Skelter’ for a while. I also have a horrible habit of buying books and never reading them and now that I say it, I feel horrible, I need to take some time out of my day and just relax with a good cup of tea and a book.

What’s next for you as a writer?
What’s next? Oh gosh, I don’t really know, I mean I wish I could see into the future but I hope that I will finish another novel and publish it. I have so many stories I want to share with the world, I want to inspire others to create. I’m really excited for the future even though I’m not sure what it holds, I do hope it is good things and I hope to publish a lot more stories as well.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would probably bring ‘The Complete Works of William Shakespeare’ with me, probably some of Edgar Allan Poe’s works as well. I would bring Stardust by Neil Gaiman with me, it is one of my favourite books of all time and Neil Gaiman taught me its alright to fail as a writer and that it’s a part of life. Last but not least I would bring Harry Potter with me, The Half Blood Prince was my favourite novel so I’d bring that one with me to a desert island. I should probably keep some room for the essentials of course as well.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I started writing in high school when I entered a poetry contest for English. I went to the Navy after graduation and began to write poetry and short stories at the end of my enlistment. A lot of my stories back then, came from my raps.

I’ve published nine books. One is a romance, of which I hope to write another one soon. The others are fantasy.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is called The Grand Librarian: The Future Wizards. It is a follow up to The Grand Librarian: Life of an Immortal. Both books are apart of my Hangman Universe, which follows the story of the Hangman, a tragic anti-hero. I got the idea of the Grand Librarian from a good friend of mine, Panhnha Tran. I wanted to add a new element to the HMU, so he suggested magic and wizards. I initially balked at the idea because I didn’t know anything about the subject. But he wrote such an intriguing character, and I had to use it.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I believe one of my unusual writing habits is that I write the first chapter, and then I write the final chapter of the book. It helps me stay focused on where I want the story to go and the ending.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
One of the only writers that has influenced me is Stephen King.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on the eighth book in the HMU series called, The Death Brothers: A Supernatural Awakening. It follows the story of the vampire slayer, Jericho Caine and the demon hunter, Father Tom Padilla. They’ve accepted their roles as the reincarnated Death Brothers and set out on a different adventure in doing so.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I usually let the publishing company handle the promotion part of the book. But now, I have sought out author interviews and Amazon to promote my books.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is to just write. When it is time to focus on the promoting aspect of the writing, then focus on that later.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard was, “Don’t sweat the small stuff”, by the wrestler Sean Waltman.

What are you reading now?
I’m not reading anything at the moment.

What’s next for you as a writer?
After I finish the HMU, which has three more installments, I want to do another romance novel. Then, I want to finish and publish the follow up to my book Cloning Around, entitled Agent Robert Bassett: Understanding Commonology.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would take Cujo and Carry by Stephen King. And then I’d take my own books. The Hangman, and The Hangman Returns.
