Just for Fin

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I write humorous non-fiction books on finance, with an aim to make it easier for non-finance professionals to gain a better appreciation of important financial issues. I am a financial professional with over 2 decades of experience in the investments and banking industries.

I have written 2 books till date, both of which are a humorous take on the issue of tax havens and how the rich & powerful use this to escape taxes.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Uber Tax Haven is my latest book. It is the second book in my 2-part book series on Tax Havens. This book was inspired by a desire to be able to do something against the growing issue of the lack of effective government response to the many leaks that have taken place highlighting the abuse of tax havens.

My response to the issue, is that tax havens should be made accessible to every person on the planet. It’s only if tax havens could be used by everyone, that governments would be forced to do something about the issue of the rich & powerful using tax havens to escape paying taxes.

The book details my plan for a revolutionary company that would make it as easy for anyone to join a tax haven and escape paying taxes, as it is to hail a taxi using Uber.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write in bursts of inspiration, at which times I can write extremely rapidly.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The set of books in the Wiley Investment Classics list has been a great source of influence for me in my investments career. The books that have inspired me in terms of my writing style, include Where are the Customers Yatch’s and Liar’s Poker.

What are you working on now?
Trying to promote my books as a self-published author! 🙂

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
At early stage of learning how to promote my books. Don’t yet truly know the answer to this question.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Do feel bad if you don’t sell one copy of your first, second, third, fourth or even fifth book, keep writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Someone has already written anything ever worth writing. So don’t get stuck finding a unique story. Take any story and make it unique.

Christen Holly

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Christen and I recently published my very first book! The book sold like crazy! Within the first three weeks of my book release, I sold over 400 copies of my book!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Office Trivia Book: Over 1,000 Trivia Questions! After I got out of the Army and became a single mother, I had a hard time finding work. During this difficult time in my life, I found comfort in watching my favorite TV show, The Office. I watched The Office everyday, so I decided to write a trivia book about it. It took me about 6 months to write, but it was so worth it!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
While I am writing, I always have soft bilateral beat muisc playing or a TV show playing as background noise. I also have trouble writing if I don’t have a Black Cherry candle burning. Strange, but it works!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite authors are Jenna Fischer, B.J Novak and Mindy Kaling. Mindy Kaling is a huge influence to me. Her book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, has inspired me to follow my dreams and to never give up on my goals as an author.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I am focusing on marketing my current trivia book. I do plan to write a second edition of the book in the near future. I have also had the opportunity to send a copy of my book to one of the cast members from The Office! My main goal is to get each cast member of The Office a copy of my book!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My main source of marketing is through social media, so I spend a large majority of my time marketing online on social platforms. Instragram has been the source of most of my sales this far.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up! Work hard on your book and even harder on promoting it. After you finish writing your book, the most exciting part is promoting and marketing. Market, market, market!! Word of mouth and social media are the best forms of promoting your book!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’ve watched countless youtube videos about free makerting and promotion. Try to promote your book for free when you are first starting out. There are websites that will promote your book for free and social media is one of the best forms of free marketing.

What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading B.J. Novak’s book, The Book with No Pictures, and Jenna Fischer’s book, The Actor’s Life: A Survival Guide. I love reading books by the cast members of The Office. They are all so inspirational.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ll be attending the Scranton Office Convention this summer to promote and sell my book. Cast members will be at the convention, so I am very excited to promote my book there.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh wow, this is a major Office reference! Ha! Ha! I’d choose the Physicians’ Desk Reference hollowed out with waterproof matches, iodine tablets, beet seeds, protein bars and a NASA blanket inside of the book and in case I get bored, I’d also bring Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for Desert Island.

Alexis Furr

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a married writer of sexy erotica. I mostly write about puppyplay, ponyplay, and BDSM but I write the occasional Paranormal book as well. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember and took the plunge to join the ranks of published authors. When I’m not writing, I’m reading, playing video games, and spending time with my husky and cat.

I currently have 18 books published

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Belonging to the Centaurs is my latest book. It’s about a girl who volunteers to go as tribute to the centaur shapeshifter village to be a human pony for them.

I’ve always been fascinated with ponyplay and puppyplay where someone takes on the role of a pony or puppy. Generally in those roles the world becomes less complicated. I also liked the aspect of Narina being thrust into a new world and having to decide whether to adapt or to try to hold onto her previous life.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I work part-time so I get a lot of time to write so I write pretty much any time of the day. Sometimes I wake up early in the morning with thoughts about my current writing project and have to start writing. I even write at my lunch time at work sometimes.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a big fan of Laurell K. Hamilton. She was a big influence on my interest in vampires and shapeshifters and the ability to write explicitly about sexual relationships and still advance the story forward.

What are you working on now?
I have an erotica about a woman who finds out her husband and best friend are having sex together as well as a vampire paranormal book in the works.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve been having a lot of success on Twitter with the added benefit of making new friends and getting involved with the community there.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get writing. Whatever your skills, if you don’t write it doesn’t matter. Make connections in the writing community. Ask for help when you need it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You don’t have to be perfect, you just need to strive to learn to do better.

What are you reading now?
An erotica book about a girl falling for her best friend.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to keep writing. I have so many ideas and there are always more ideas that come.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Watership Down, Queen of the Damned, a Laurell K. Hamilton book

Isaac Rubio

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Isaac Rubio is a writer, animator, illustrator and storyboard artist with many years working in the animation, advertising and entertainment industry around the world. Together with Michelle Giraldo, he created the book series “My Little Piggy” in 2015.

Mr. Rubio has excelled in different fields of audiovisual productions, being a key piece in winning projects at prestigious festivals such as Sundance Film Festival, Bentonville International Film Festival and San Diego Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival.

His work as an Illustrator has recently been recognized by the book Pictoria3: The best contemporary illustrators worldwide.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My picture book, My Little Piggy. What I love most about my work is creating stories and convey emotions to people. My wife is a talented writer, passionate about educational stories for children and I have extensive experience in storytelling for movies and TV. The idea was born 7 years ago when we bought a piggy bank at a local fair and decided to work together in these children’s books to teach children the importance of money, its origins and how to handle it healthily while preserving the most important human values such as love, friendship, family, solidarity and teamwork.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I usually draw some sketches on my computer before I start writing some lines, especially for the most complex situations. In this way, I can visualize the situations clearly and blow my imagination.

As an artist, this process is very inspiring when creating stories for TV too.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on some animation productions in Los Angeles, CA as lead animator and concept artist.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Patience is the mother of all virtues, especially in the habit of writing.
Ideas must be fertilized, conceived. They come with natural discomforts, migraines, dizziness, weaknesses, insomnia, nausea, etc.
Care must be taken not to fall into mental blocks, and then the expected time comes, when you finally give birth and you can start writing your book. A new job starts, and you must continue working to make it grow.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Discipline is the bridge between goals and achievements.

Robert Owen

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hey there, thanks for reading this, so what to say about myself?
I guess we should start with the basics then.
I’m originally from the United Kingdom, but have lived and worked in India for many years, primarily in Kolkata (Calcutta).
I used to be a paid up member of the rat race and worked for several multi-national banks over the years, but got fed up of the straitjacket of the nine to five existence, monthly one to ones, and meaningless annual personal development plans.
I’ve been an avid reader since the age of five and would literally read anything and everything. I used to be criticised when young for having an ‘over active imagination’ but somewhere along the line I realised this was quite the boon for a writer.
I’ve literally consumed so much literature over the years that I realised I should put something back into the World, hence I’ve decided to become a full time creator.
This is my first novel but I hope to build this into a series and to create a full blown alternative history World for people to enjoy.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
‘Durga Noir’ – I fell in love with Calcutta and Bengali culture whilst working there in the first half of the 2010s and often wondered what it would have been like to live there in the days of the Raj. This inspired me to dig deeper into the history of the British Empire, what I found was a lot darker than I’d been brought up to believe in the UK where we still cling to the notion of a benign and enlightening past.
From this I began to develop an idea of an alternate World where the Indians were actually in charge of the Raj, and I wondered how would that World have progressed with that key difference.
I wrote ‘Durga Noir’ to be a fairly light introduction into that World and also because I’m a great fan old Noir movies, a detective thriller naturally seemed to be the place to start.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m terribly inefficient when it comes to writing, I usually get up around 8am with good intentions to crack on with the current project, then find myself procrastinating until around Midday at which point I start panicking that I won’t achieve anything that day. The panic usually subsides after lunch and finally get into a groove around 2pm and will actually write until about 8pm (which I think drives my partner mad!).
So I’m usually at the laptop for around twelve hours a day, but will only actually produce quality output for half of that time!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh gosh, there’s so many! Tolkein, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, Heinlein, William Gibson, James Michener, Stephen King, C.S. Lewis, Ian Fleming, Dashiell Hammett, Iain Banks, James Ellroy, Elmore Leonard, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen…….and enough now there’s just too many.

What are you working on now?
A short story collection based on the loose theme of ‘the nature of reality’ – how do we know what’s real and what isn’t? Are we all living in a simulation? Lab rats in someone else’s experiment? Are there really alternative realities out there? Other dimensions? Who bloody knows? I certainly don’t but it’s fun to speculate!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Mostly Twitter and Amazon, but I’m hoping to reach a wider audience through this site.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Believe in yourself. Enjoy the writing, it’s your baby and you can pretty much do what you like with it.
Give it a go as and when you can, we all have a story in us.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Always bet on black?
Nah, probably, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch”.
Or just throw in anything from Groucho Marx.

What are you reading now?
‘Lisey’s Story’ by that nice Mr King, I’ve been meaning to read it for years, but I always have several books on the go (reading wise) and the poor thing always got put to the bottom of the pile. Now I understand one of the streaming services is about to televise it, so I’d better get my skates on and finish it!

What’s next for you as a writer?
Develop the ‘Bharat Empire’ World and series.
Finish the short story collection I mentioned above.
Plus an idea for a film script which in my head is a mash up of the films Blade Runner and Bowfinger. Hopefully that’s better than it sounds right now!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
‘Restoree’ by Anne McCaffrey, one of the first Sci-Fi novels I fell in love with – it gets a lot of criticism these days, particularly regarding the characterisations, but it’s a fun romp and a great effort for a debut novel – not to mention its female centric viewpoint was light years ahead for the era it was first published in.

Anything by Stephen King. Wait not anything, I’m taking Pet Semetary out of the list as that still scares the wits out of me.

‘L.A. Confidential’ by James Ellroy, an amazingly rich and complex crime novel, and so evocative of the era it is set in.

Anything by James A Michener – his historical novels are so detailed with well drawn characters, weaving plots, and heart rending drama.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an entrepreneur, a recruiter and a Career Coach by profession. Since 2003, serving small & large organizations across multiple industries and job sectors.
After becoming an employer in 2010 (setting up my own search firm), I was able to study the topic of job search from multiple angles. In 2014, I’ve established Name Your Career (www.nameyourcareer.com), a training & coaching practice helping job seekers and professionals achieve their career goals.
Since then, my job search formula has helped thousands of job seekers worldwide (in over 150 countries) through my video programs and seminars. Today, I continue to serve companies and professionals globally, as a recruiter, trainer, speaker, and career coach.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
When I was 17 years old, my parents signed my brother and I up for math tutoring to help us with our studies. An unemployed engineer by the name of Salvatore Cali became our math tutor for several months. I remember the conversations he had with my father after our sessions, where he was complaining about being unemployed. At the time, I could not understand how this could be bad… in France, you get a social allowance when you’re unemployed, and so for me, that was great! One day, Mr. Salvatore Cali did not come. And when my father enquired about what happened, he told us that he committed suicide…
The title of my book is “The Job Seeker & The Coach”, and it is the fruit of a 16-year career in recruitment and coaching job seekers… My entire career was ignited by the passing of Mr. Salvatore Cali. The topic of unemployment and job search has never stopped obsessing me since.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write, even if I do not know where the story is going. I write and find out what happens at the same time as the characters.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Patrick Lencioni. The idea that anything can be taught through stories.

What are you working on now?
Building a job search academy to help people become job search coaches.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am a seeker of knowledge on this part, I would not be able to advise anyone, unfortunately.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
DO NOT GIVE UP. WRITE WHETHER YOU FEEL LIKE IT OR NOT. WRITE WHETHER YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR STORY IS GOING OR NOT. JUST WRITE.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I grew up with the notion that there is always a price to pay. The more something is going to be worth it for you, the higher the sacrifice. So make sure it is really worth it.

What are you reading now?
Your first 1000 copies by Tim Grahl.

What’s next for you as a writer?
My next novel. A story-based formula on how to be successful at work, no matter what sector or industry you’re in.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Holy Quran and maybe 2 or 3 survival books. 🙂

Sophie Kaye

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Growing up in Finland, I found plenty of time to read during long, dark winters. I sat under a blanket, enraptured by love stories. Today, I have come full circle, and am writing them.
I only started writing romance in 2019 but found it so much fun. More fun than I expected.
Christmas Cookie is my first clean and wholesome romance, but I hope there will be many more under 2020.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Christmas Cookie was inspired by Christmas. I wanted to write a feel-good story in a cozy, but slightly quirky, small-town (think Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls) with lots of interesting characters.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really, I write on a desktop, in the morning and usually have sparkling water next to me. When I take a moment to think I often take my hair down and put it back up again.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Everything from Jane Austen and Margret Mitchell to Harlequin-books.

What are you working on now?
I just finished a short story to give away to everyone who signs up to my newsletter (which you can do at https://www.subscribepage.com/bellrom). I am also editing book number two in the Bellfrey Romance series which will come out in February.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I think the best method is to keep trying new things, but don’t let it distract from your writing. Awesomegang offers a great opportunity for writers to get their books out there.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write and read and don’t listen to ALL the advice, learn who you can trust by being skeptical of everything.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Time will pass whether you are working towards your goal or not. Five years from now, do you want to be five years closer to your goal?

What are you reading now?
I read varied and out of my genre, so the Witcher books are on my desk at the moment.

What’s next for you as a writer?
The next book, and then the next one, and the one after that…

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Tricky question. Maybe an anthology of short stories and some classics, Pride and Prejudice and Gone with the Wind.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I married my boyfriend of 10yrs in March 2019 and I have 3 nieces that I help raise. I’ve always been praised for my writing growing up, have always been the hype-woman for my friends, but I never imagined myself publishing a book. I’m a millennial, so I’ve definitely considered jumping into the world of blogging, but writing an actual book caught me completely by surprise and so far, I have written over 5 books, two of which are currently published on Amazon.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
20 Day Motivational for the Habitual Procrastinator & Non-Completer, is the name of my latest book. I’m a self-proclaimed chronic THRIVING procrastinator with the attention span of a gnat haha. But I have a lot of things to say and it’s ultimately my friends and family that inspired this book as they are always telling me how encouraging I am. 365 days of motivations sounds great and has been done, but remember, I have the attention span of a gnat haha. But I figured, I could do anything in or for 20days and it’s short and sweet enough to read all at once and store all the motivational words in your mind to carry with you throughout the year. So, that’s how that happened.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m really just finding my voice as a writer and to me it’s pretty straight forward. Nothing too fun or quirky just yet. But a friend of mine pointed out something about my writing that I hadn’t realized. It’s the fact that majority of my books are “moral stories”. It was in reference to several children’s books I wrote that have not yet been released.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Wally Lamb, Zora Neale Hurston Jodi Picoult and Zane (oops, did I say that one out loud? haha). I also love and appreciate the works of Michelle Alexander, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Bryan Stevenson.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on my confidence to really put myself out there to promote my books, 20 Day Motivational for the Habitual Procrastinator & Non-Completer and my children’s book, I Raise My Hand. I’m also brainstorming ways to package my group of Moral Stories. But in all honesty, I would like to break even on the first two books before releasing more books.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I haven’t done much promo for the children’s book just yet. But for my book on procrastination, mostly word of mouth and through my Instagram, Thriving Procrastinator. I hope to make a website soon for all of my books to be advertised.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t worry about not having a complete story all worked out in your head. Start with what you have now and put it in a Google Doc. Major emphasis on creating a Google Doc. It helped keep all of my ideas in one centralized place that goes wherever I have an internet connection.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“The best way to get ahead is to start”. That was the best advice for me to actually commit to seeing my books all the way through.

What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading “Acts of Faith: Daily Meditations for People of Color”. Not reading it everyday like I should, but when I do, the message is always right on time.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m not sure what’s next for me as a writer. It has really awaken something in me that’s so empowering and liberating. So, I’m kind of just riding that high right now and seeing where it takes me.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh wow…um one of the 3 or 4 books would definitely have to be something on survival hacks on a desert haha. Other than that, I would say, the Bible and Are You There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea Handler. That book is hilarious and I’m going to need a good laugh at some point in that crappy situation haha.

Raimo Strangis

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Raimo Strangis, I am a YA Fiction author from Toronto, Canada. When I am not writing, I work as a certified professional chef. In my youth, I was a touring musician and songwriter. I currently have one book, The Kingdom of Grape, released and working on my second novel titled, With Little Means.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled, The Kingdom of Grape. This book actually began as a song. I was tired of writing songs about my person struggles, and decided to write something completely fictional. I enjoyed it so much that I turned it into a play script and now a novel!!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to walk away from a project for long periods of time. I find If I walk away for awhile I come back with more inspiration and life experience, which really helps the story. Writing for me is a marathon, not a sprint.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
William Goldman is a big one for me. His novel, The Princess Bride, is what inspired me to begin my writing journey.

What are you working on now?
Right now I’m working on a novel titled, With little means. It’s about having an opportunity to go back in time, re-live your life, and follow your dreams. We all have dreams when we are young. For some of us it’s being a rock star, or movie star or famous athlete, but for most of us, that doesn’t happen. What if you had a chance to go back and do it? Would you give up your current life? Just know that fame comes with consequences.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I think it’s important to diversify. The more sites you promote on, the more opportunity you have to find readers. There is no quick way to promote, you have to put in the time to find success. I find book blogs are great and reading community websites.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Take your time!! Writing is filled with ups and downs. Some days the words come flowing out like a river, and other days it’s as dry as a desert, be patient.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Finish your story!! This is a tough one for me. I find I am never satisfied and always want to improve my story. At some point to have to stop, finish and don’t look back. No regrets.

What are you reading now?
I find myself going back to the classics. I get a different view of a story every time i read it. Currently reading, 1984.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I wan’t to advance in my genre. My first book is YA/Children’s. I would like to move up to YA Fantasy.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Princess Bride
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Outsiders
