Awesome Author - Leigh Roberts

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a new author although the desire to write has been burning in me, ignored, for a long time. I have written eight of the nine books in my first series: Wrak-Ayya: The Age of Shadows. I have always had a vivid imagination, and as a child, spent a great deal of time in my imaginary worlds rather than in reality which served well as a means for me to escape a difficult childhood.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The first book in the series is called Khon’Tor’s Wrath. Gracious, I have found that trying to title a book before it is written is a challenge. It is almost like getting that new puppy and having to get to know him or her before deciding on a name. I think this is one aspect of writing that many authors struggle with – that and trying to write those book descriptions! I would rather write 100 books than try to write ONE book description!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wish I could report that I do, indeed, have unusual writing habits-such as dictating all my books in Klingon. When I do write, I can sit for hours and hours. There is nothing I would rather do, than write. If someone would just open the door and toss in food and an occasional beverage, I could happily stay at the desk for weeks.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I grew up in a rich era of the sci-fi giants – Arthur C. Clark, Isaac Asimov. When I was not reading a book I had my nose poked in a superhero comic book. Okay, so yes I read an occasional Richie Rich – but my favorites were the DC superheros. Loved the original Star Trek. Yes I know, it seems hoakie now – but in its day it was the most forward-thinking show there was. I lived for Sunday nights when it came on NBC!

What are you working on now?
I have written the first eight books. Books one, two, and three will be launched by the end of October 2019 (hopefully) and Book Four by Thanksgiving. Books five, six, seven, and eight will follow thereafter-once they survive the editing process! I have been blessed to have a fantastic editor.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My website is www.leighrobertsauthor.com I have some video trailers on this site also. You can also sign up to be notified of new releases on this site – or just follow my author page on Amazon.com.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My best advise for new authors is 1) Take a long-term perspective and hang on for the ride. 2) Never try to write and edit/research at the same time. They are conflicting activities and you cannot engage your right-brain (creativity) when you are doing left-brain tasks (editing, research). 3) Hire the best editor you can find but also one you can work with. You do not just want something who will tell you what you want to hear – but you also do not want the truth delivered through your heart on the tip of a spear. If you cannot give you constructive feedback without breaking your spirit, find another. The author’s journey has enough challenges and your editor should not be one of them.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advise I have ever heard is that, “Just because something is not important to you doesn’t mean it is not important to someone else.” You don’t want balloons at your party? That is great. Just don’t let that stop you from bringing balloons to someone else’s if they like them.

What are you reading now?
Mostly I am now reading about my craft (how to market my series) and books for other authors. I am blessed to be in a tight-knit authors community and we help each other out by reading each other’s manuscripts as Beta Readers!

What’s next for you as a writer?
My goal is to get my first four books on their way and then get books five through nine published so I can start on Series Two. Ultimately there will be three series in the Etera Chronicles: Series One: Wrak-Ayya The Age of Shadows / Series Two: Wrak-Wavarra The Age of Darkness / Series Three: Wrak-Ashwea The Age of Light.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring three blank books so I could capture all my new ideas until I was rescued. I do not mean this to sound arrogant, because to try to only select three from the number of incredible books ever written is nearly impossible. Now that I have recognized what I believe is my calling, if I could no longer write, I think my soul would wither.

Awesome Author - Rembert Parker

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I started writing for Dungeons and Dragons in the eighties and wrote for a few other gaming companies as well.

I began posting oped-style essays to my blog and eventually started collecting those in my first two books in the Resisting The Challenges of the 21st Century series.

Lately I’ve been working on Music history instead since I can no longer comprehend the news.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
LOST OR FORGOTTEN OLDIES VOLUME 1: Hit Records From 1955 To 1989 That The Radio Seldom Plays

I was a disk jockey on Nashville radio in the late sixties doing a Saturday Night Oldies show. My blog and the Lost or Forgotten Oldies books are a way for me to make a return to the past.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I add a new Lost or Forgotten Oldie to my blog every day:

https://whatwasleftin.blog/

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I started out reading the Hardy Boys and Chip Hilton books and then moved on to all the Science Fiction and Fantasy books in our local library. That was, of course, a few decades ago…well, maybe more than a few.

I also read most of the comics that came out as well, and now run a comic and game store.

What are you working on now?
More Lost or Forgotten Oldies books.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Every day there is a teaser on both Facebook and Twitter for the new Lost Or Forgotten Oldie of the day:

https://facebook.com/rcopies/

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Finish the book you’re working on.

If you’ve finished your most recent book, start writing another book!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Writers write.

What are you reading now?
the news…we can’t make this stuff up

What’s next for you as a writer?
Aren’t daily essays enough for you?

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
3 or 4 very long books that I haven’t read yet…why take along something I’ve already read or a short book?

Awesome Author - Andrea Wilson Woods

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Andrea Wilson Woods, and I am an author, writer, patient advocate, and entrepreneur. I am president and founder of the nonprofit Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association. I am also the CEO and co-founder of Cancer University, a for-profit, social-benefit, digital health company. My debut book Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days is a medical memoir about raising my younger sister Adrienne from the age of eight until she died from liver cancer at age 15.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book is titled Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days. The subtitle reflects my sister’s 147-day battle with liver cancer. The title reflects how when she became bald, she realized how beautiful she was.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well, I don’t write when I’m drunk, and I always edit when I’m sober, which is 99% of the time.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Too many. I admire any author who can make nonfiction read like fiction and fiction seem like nonfiction.

What are you working on now?
I have four more books in me (at least). I am trying to decide which one should come next. Both are nonfiction but have very different topics.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Be shameless. Seriously. As the author, you know your work better than anyone and it’s up to you to get it out in the world. While I work with marketing professionals, I do a lot of the work myself. If you look, opportunities are everywhere.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
1. Read, read, read especially in the genre you write.
2. Write an amazing story.
3. Hire professional editors and proofreaders.
4. Learn how to sell because it is the author’s responsibility to sell her books.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t treat people the way you want to be treated; treat them the way they want to be treated.

What are you reading now?
I just finished listening to The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides on Audible. On my Kindle, I finished Rich Dad, Poor Day by Robert Kiyosaki. On my nightstand I have Unaccountable and The Price We Pay, two nonfiction books by Dr. Marty Makary.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I will continue to promote my current book for at least a year if not longer.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Even though I prefer books I can touch, I would bring my Kindle and load it up with hundreds of books! I would download all of the books to my device so I wouldn’t need Internet. 😉

Awesome Author - Anthony Delstretto

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a native of Detroit, Michigan, and am retired from a forty-plus year career in education, as a teacher and school administrator. My parents were the children of immigrants and I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, in the 1950s in a neighborhood full of other Italians as well as Irish and Polish. We eventually moved to California where I graduated from the University of California and married. This is my first work of fiction, although I’ve published a number of articles in educational trade journals over the years.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book is PULLING GOD’S TEETH, the first in a trilogy called “The Last Italian: A Saga in Three Parts.” With the advent of the internet, I discovered cousins in Italy I never knew I had. Getting to visit them and the home village of my grandparents in northern Italy sparked an interest in the history and culture of the country. It even led me in 1993 to acquire dual Italian citizenship for myself and my family. Eventually, I felt compelled to create a fictional work to illustrate the life and times of a remarkable people with whom I’m pleased to share blood ties, and, perhaps in the process place my readers in settings and situations that are new and interesting to them.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not having written a novel before, let alone three, as I started out I tried not to think of all the words I had to produce. Instead I resolved to take on the project in bites I could manage on a consistent basis. I found that I could write a coherent narrative of about a thousand words a day, so that’s what I set as a goal. I wrote every day, five days a week (occasionally with some longer breaks) from February 2018 until the end of June 2019.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I enjoy the grand historical sagas of James Michener, and non-fiction historical works by authors like Rick Atkinson, Doris Jearns Goodwin, and Edmund Morris.

What are you working on now?
I’m looking at a collection of poems I wrote over the years and never published, trying to decide if they’re worth formatting as a book and offering on Amazon.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m not active on social media so I count on sites such as Awesome Gang to get the word out to potential readers. I’m also using BKnights, Book Goodies, Whizzbuzz, Armadillo, among others.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’d say take time to outline a plot as opposed to just jumping in and don’t let yourself get overwhelmed by the scope of what lies ahead. One Italian proverb I ran into when writing my book was, “A little at a time fills the pocket.” I’d say that’s a workable strategy for any author as far as creating content.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Treat people as if they already were what they should be, and you help them become what they can be.” — A paraphrase of a quote attributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

What are you reading now?
Believe it or not, “War and Peace.”

What’s next for you as a writer?
PULLING GOD’S TEETH and “The Last Italian” trilogy is my first foray into Amazon Kindle Publishing. In the coming weeks, I expect I’ll be fully engaged in monitoring how that whole process unfolds.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Patrick O’Brian’s entire twenty-volume “Master and Commander” series, “The Landmark Julius Ceasar”, and probably a good how-to-survive-in-the-wilderness handbook.

Awesome Author - Dawn Doig

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Dawn Doig and I am currently an English as an additional language teacher working internationally at the American School of Yaoundé in Yaoundé, Cameroon. I was an audiologist for 23 years, hopping around the globe and providing services to patients and their families in countries in this great big beautiful world. I currently have eight children’s picture books published with three more getting ready for release. Five more are currently collecting dust and I have started writing another. My books are inspired by the amazing children I have met in two very rewarding careers as an audiologist and educator, family, friends (including the furry kind), and experiences in different cultures. I am excited by the recent increased interest in my books and currently have a total of five reviews that are all 5-star. It’s a start!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My newest release is ‘Melvin Fastidious the Sailor’, published under my maiden name, Dawn Young. It was inspired by my father, who is 80 years young, a veteran of the Canadian navy, and an individual with OCD. We laughed a lot growing up about Dad’s need to have things ‘just so’ and still do when we reflect on his nature for perfection.

My stories often come to me in dreams and then I get up and write them.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Dr. Seuss; Robert Munsch;Mercer Mayer; ‘Stellaluna’

What are you working on now?
I am trying to finish the illustrations for a book I have written and Illustrated with cartoon characters I created when I was 12 years old.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t think any one site has been overly successful to date. I am still struggling to become ‘known’ and get my books into the hands of children around the world.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Do it because you love it, not because you want or expect to be famous.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t give up. Your time will come.

What are you reading now?
I am relearning French so French compositions at the moment.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am starting a book about my mother and her ‘collection’ of things.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
‘Stellaluna’; anything by Diana Gabaldon; anything by James Patterson

Awesome Author - Laura Jennings

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an author/illustrator with a great love for fantasy and animals. I’ve always been fascinated by animal psychology, their relationships to us, and how they problem-solve. For me, it’s a toss up between horses and dinosaurs as to which I like more. I really had a big gap in my dinosaur knowledge when I was inspired in 2007, and the science has just leaped forward in incredible bounds. The new species discovered, soft tissue, pregnant specimens: all of it is just incredible. I tried to put as much of that into my book as I could, because I hoped my readers would find that as interesting as I did.
I’ve written two other ebooks, a soft sci-fi series called Highsong.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Mark of the Conifer was inspired by the award-winning Museum of Natural Life at Thanksgiving Point in Utah.
Their displays were the first real dinosaurs I’d ever seen. I grew up in Texas, which was underwater for most of the Mesozoic, so if you like jellyfish and the Cambrian period it’s great. Not so much for dinosaurs. Thanksgiving Point is truly spectacular, able to rival the Smithsonian, so if you get the chance I can’t recommend it enough. You will be in awe.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write at 9PM every night. I’m a night owl, which I think most creative types are. I used to get home from a job at 9PM, and I’d sit down and write for an hour or two every night. I did that for years, so now even if I’m not actively writing on a novel my brain has this little ping when 9PM hits.” Time to write!” It’s been a very helpful habit.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Brian Jacques, the author of the Redwall series, is truly amazing. I read his books over and over as a kid. I would finish the books I had and just start over. His rhythm and diction are just wonderful.
When he died, I cried because I’d never written him telling him how much I loved his work. I ended up writing a bunch of other authors to make up for it. Tamora Pierce, Stephen King, Holly Black, Charles de Lint. All big influences that I’ve greatly appreciated.

What are you working on now?
I’ve got the rough draft of an entire trilogy set in a fantasy version of Assyria. It’s about a slave girl and magic horses, abuse and freedom, and how the stories we tell ourselves can be salvation or destruction whether it’s personal or societal. The first book is about a race, but it becomes much more than that as the series progresses. I’m really excited about it, and the artwork I’ve done for it so far.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m really not very good at marketing my book. I’m either too busy actually working on stuff, or not sure where to go or what to do. But I’m teaching myself and moving forward.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Develop a good writing habit. Don’t go back and reread a rough draft; all it does is discourage you. Write the draft and get it done, then don’t look at it for 6 weeks. Then you’re allowed to look at it.
Everyone thinks books become amazing right out of the gate. They don’t. You have to rewrite, rewrite, and rewrite first.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Get The Elements of Style by Strunk and White.

What are you reading now?
I’m working my way through Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. I really enjoy his sense of fun and wonder. You can tell he thoroughly enjoys his process and that’s infectious.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m fiddling with a possible trilogy or four-book series set in a fantasy version of Indochina. I love folklore and that’s an area of the world I haven’t read much folklore from. I get to mess around with caste systems, tigers, and lots of really interesting monsters. I’m excited about it, but very happy it’s just my own little secret world right now.
I’m also dabbling in some werewolf stories. I feel like werewolves are poorly represented despite being furry superheroes. Being a werewolf didn’t used to be a perk. I want to explore actual lupine psychology. Wolves are shy, aggressive animals who bully to survive. How that would grate on human motivations and relationships? On a werewolf pack?

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Watership Down by Richard Adams. It’s my favorite book of all time, and heavily inspired Mark of the Conifer.
Something long by Stephen King. It, The Stand, Under the Dome.
A couple of books by Charles de Lint with his interwoven characters.

Awesome Author - Elisa Di Napoli

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Originally from Italy, I like to think of myself as a citizen of the world. I have lived in New Zealand, Ireland, London and now Scotland. I am a holistic clinical hypnotherapist, performance coach, singer-songwriter and drummer. I am a jack of all trades it seems… I cannot stay still for long! I am literally obsessed with learning, I cannot stop attending online courses, training, classes of all types… In terms of what I have published, some of my poems were published back in my twenties in literary magazines and I have produced and published eleven music albums under the moniker Elyssa Vulpes. However, in terms of non-fiction books, this is my first.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Dare to be seen: from stage fright to stage presence. Ten easy steps to turn your performance anxiety into authentic power with transformational hypnotherapy. It was inspired by the fact that I suffered from stage fright for many years to the point that I almost gave up performing altogether. After trying many other’cures’ and falling short every time, I applied the principles I teach my clients and found hypnotherapy actually worked. I decided I needed to share these results with as many people as possible because I don’t want them to go through what I had to!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am not sure if they are unusual but I feel I need to move my body before I write. I need to let go of the tension first. I use music to let my body do what it feels like doing. Then I sit quietly for a few minutes with my eyes closed, to make sure I listen to the voice within. If I don’t do that I end up waking up at 4 am with all kinds of ideas and I can no longer sleep!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
In the self-help arena Tony Robbins, Rachael Jayne Groover, Charlie Morley and Lama Tsultrim Allione. In the hypnotherapy arena Milton Erickson, Ormond McGill, Randal Churchill, Adam Eason, Roy Hunter, Charles Tebbetts, Gil Boyne, too many to mention! In the fiction arena, I am a fan of Margaret Atwood, Isaac Asimov, George Orwell, Edgar Allan Poe, Agatha Christie, and Lovecraft. You cannot go wrong with the classics! I also love Stieg Larsson… I am quirky in my tastes. I will read anything a good friend recommends.

What are you working on now?
At the moment it is all about getting my accompanying online course to the book launched. I put a lot of work in making sure the hypnotherapy sessions included in the course would be available for everyone to enjoy, not only those who can afford them in person!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love Goodreads giveaways! Also, Bookbubs ads to drive pre-orders to the book. I also recommend pitching to relevant podcasts.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I would say, do not judge your first draft. Just expect it to be rough, that’s why it’s called rough draft! Do not spend endless time making it perfect. That is what the second, third, fourth etc draft is for! Imagine you are a sculptor. You get a rock to start with. You shape it into the final figure in stages. Be patient and persevere. Rome was not built in a day but most people underestimate what can get done in a year if you work on your project most days.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Can you just…. write ONE sentence? Of course, you can! Now can you write another? Of course! Keep going. Success breeds success. Make your goals small and achievable so you are always succeeding. Also: stop expecting the world to be a meritocracy and the lack of success to mean you are not good enough. Just learn from what doesn’t work and don’t give up until you succeed! Writing is about giving of yourself. If you think of it that way you cannot fail.

What are you reading now?
I am reading two books:
1) The French Lieutenant Woman by John Fowles, because I loved “The Collector”
2) Empower your Thoughts by Scott Allan – he is a fellow author and I am on his launch team, he is on my launch team so I am helping him launch his book!

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am considering writing a sequel to Dare to be Seen, called “Master the Stage”. This was the idea from the start because I have ten more sessions to share with those who will have implemented the sessions in the first book and want to take their stage presence to the next level so they can perform at their very best. I am also very interested in finishing a work of fiction that I have had in mind for years… and I have to write my new album! There’s just not enough hours in the day….

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Can I just bring my kindle? I literally cannot answer this question. It would be too unfair to too many books.

Awesome Author - John Stone

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi, My name is John Stone. I live in Florida with my wife and son. I am 42 year old and I began writing my first book just two years ago, and since then written a total of two books, and I am working of several more.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first book is titled: The Promise A Story of Faith, Love, and Forgiveness
It is an amazing story of a father’s faith in God, love for his son, and his ability to trust in God during 13.5 years of trials and tribulations. It is based on a true story.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Writing is something that I can only do when I feel inspired by God. If I don’t have God leading me, I can’t write.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love autobiographies. I like to learn about the things that other people have been through.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a teen romance novel,an autobiography, as well as book of mini- sermons.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I advertise on Facebook and instagram.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write your story. It doesn’t matter if you sell one copy, or one million. Your story is worthy of being written. There is someone out there that will benefit from reading your story.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?

What are you reading now?
The Bible.

What’s next for you as a writer?
To continue to share my story with the world, changing one life at a time.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible and The Promise.

Awesome Author - Tricia McGill

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have just started writing my 20th book. I was born in London England but moved to Australia many moons ago. I have been writing since I learned how to put a sentence together but only began in earnest after I retired early. I write Romance in many genres including Historical, Time-Travel, Contemporary, Family Saga/mainstream, and fantasy sci-fi.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Challenging Mountains, my latest release is book 3 in my Settlers series. Set in the early days of Australian colonisation the series starts in the early 1800s when transportation was at its height. The first book in the series features Bella and Tiger and this latest is their eldest son, Tim’s story. The earliest settlers resided in and around Sydney and in Challenging Mountains young Tim has the urge to travel further afield and sets his sights on Port Philip down south, the settlement that became Melbourne.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not as such, but I guess I am different to a lot of other writers who work to a schedule. I have always been unable to do this and just write as the fancy takes me. When I am well into a book I will write until my dogs tell me it is time to take a break as it is coming up to their meal time.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many it’s too many to put here. Because Time-Travel has always fascinated me I guess some of the authors who write in this genre had a huge influence on me. One name that springs to mind when I think of historicals is Catherine Coulter. Oh and I read a lot by Candace Camp in the early days.

What are you working on now?
I have just started research for my 4th book in the Settlers series. Originally this was meant to be a two book series but then Tim’s story needed to be told and now his younger sister began pestering me to write about her, so here I go again.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a very long list of sites where I have an author page and promote regularly, and then there is Facebook. Links to my author pages are on my Web Site, where Awesome Gang will be added. Every writer has their favourite way of promoting and it is a necessity in this day and age

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I think the best advice I was ever given when I started was that to become a writer you must simply write. Get criticism from those you trust to be completely honest with you. I’ve had friends who began writing at the same time as myself and they fell by the wayside because they often never got past the first chapter. Do not keep reading over what you have written each day or you will never ever reach the final page. Personally I like editing and re-reading, and often surprise myself by what I have written down when I go back over it after I have reached the end.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Ditto to what I said above. Like any profession it must only improve with practice. Also, never be too disheartened by rejection, there is always something to be learned even from the harshest criticism.

What are you reading now?
When I begin a new book I seldom have time to read so currently I am not reading, because I am deep in research.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Continue research as I go along. Writing historicals is an ongoing learning process. As you reach a place in time you might be stuck by a small detail which has to be researched. It’s useless saying, “she turned on the tap,” when no irrigation system had yet been built in that year. That’s just a simple example. The same goes for Time-Travels. I tend to fret about how my protagonists would clean their teeth say in 1050.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Definitely romances, but books with a touch of humour. And most of my own books contain at least one animal, usually a dog or horse, so I would take books where an animal features largely.

Awesome Author - Jeremy Zidek

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is the first popular audience book I’ve written. I have previously focused mostly on peer-reviewed journals and professional reports. I’m a startup founder, a parent to twin girls, husband to my beautiful wife, and I moved from the US to Beirut, Lebanon 5 years ago. That’s is a lot to unpack there, so I would imagine more books in more genres will follow as this process has been more enjoyable than not.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My main title of the book is called Survival of the Fattest. When we’re in our 20’s, it’s easy to find time to do just about anything, and our recovery time is pretty fast. When we’re 40, with kids, working way too much, and recovery time for working out seems to never happen fast enough, it seems like we’re living in a different world. Writing a book was something I always wanted to do, but what inspired me to get back into running was my dad’s massive heart attack in the summer of 2018. He survived, but was incredibly lucky. Considering he was essentially “allergic to exercise” for a few decades, I looked at myself and saw my future if I didn’t get back to working out. I don’t just like working out for the sake of working out. For me, there has to be a goal involved. When I trained for races in my 20’s, I would get hurt, so I figured I need to do it right, do it better now as my body doesn’t respond the way it used to. I found the methods I used incredibly successful, so have shared them in a book for anyone who wants to go from zero to marathon in middle age (or any age for that matter).

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Startup founder is a very busy life, so I couldn’t devote hours on end to writing. My style is basically to start my iPhone timer every day for 30 minutes and write, think, or jot down notes during that time. If I was in the flow, I might keep going a few more minutes, but never less. I did this every day until the book was done (about 6 months). It became somewhat of a break during my day, and instead of reading emails or listening to disappointing news podcasts (because I can’t cut out the fantasy football podcasts!), I would write.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love a lot of books, but those that are closest to this book are probably books by authors who don’t take themselves too seriously and try to give help and tips through stories. A Fantasy Life by Matthew Berry is one of my favorites as he’s able to use self-deprecating humor and excellent storytelling to cover major points.

What are you working on now?
Right now I’m going through the startup process with my company, and I started writing a book on that process. That said, many of those cookie-cutter how-to books to success or funding or profit already exist. What I’d love to see out there is a book that takes a realistic look at what it really means to run a startup and what a founder can really expect out of the process to prepare mentally.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This is literally the first website I’ve tried promoting this book. That said, in my business, Facebook is a great advertising site, and I would imagine it would be pretty similar for book promotion.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writers write. Try out the 30 min. per day method. A couple weeks in, you’ll be surprised at your progress.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I found a podcast by Hassan Osman called Writer on the Side (https://www.writerontheside.com/). He’s actually a friend of my brother-in-law, so I was kinda introduced to this at random by my wife, who always knew I wanted to write a book despite my telling her that I simply don’t have time. His methods are great, and his books seem to be pretty successful. He subscribes to the 30-min per day approach too, hence the great advice :-).

What are you reading now?
Well, since I’m looking to raise VC funds soon for my startup, I am reading Secrets of Sand Hill Road: Venture Capital and How to Get It by Scott Kupor.
What I really want to read next: Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I think I will write about something in the startup world, but from a realistic approach. It can mentally break you, and most podcasts, books, articles, shows, …etc tend to lionize and glorify the founder. I think this is actually less than helpful, and a realistic book about what the typical entrepreneur will face would be useful in preparing mentally for that challenge.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’ve always wondered what I would want to read repeatedly if I could only read a few things repeatedly. I love non-fiction books that make us think (like Malcolm Gladwell) and I love fiction books, particularly Russian Literature for some reason. But after reading those once, I don’t have any desire to reread them. I do like to laugh, so all my books in this situation would be books by comedians or people I found funny.

Awesome Author - Chad Rickard

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Chad Rickard and have have just completed my first book, a memoir about my time in Afghanistan as an embedded Combat Advisor to the Afghan Army. I recently retired as a Sergeant Major, after 27 years of service to the U.S. Army. I grew up in Central Pennsylvania and moved to California in 1996 where I have lived since then. I’m married with three children, one in college, one in high school and one in elementary. We live on a 10 acre ranch with chickens and goats and I spend my time taking care of the animals and land now that I’m retired.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book is called “Mayhem 337: Memoir of a Combat Advisor in Afghanistan” and it is a story based upon my time embedded in the Afghan Army in 2008-2009 as a U.S. Army Combat Advisor. It was a particularly dangerous mission, my third combat tour following two tours in Iraq, and many of my friends and family thought it worthy of sharing. I initially sat down to write a long letter to my oldest son about why I missed so much of his young life being deployed all of the time and the it morphed into a book that is now published and doing well on Amazon as a Kindle e-book. It is due to release in paperback around November 1st.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am overly critical of myself and a perfectionist which caused quite a delay in getting this book ready. It took me a while to be able to get words on paper and be comfortable with the fact that I could come back and edit later. Once I let go and started writing the book was much easier to get out in the initial draft.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I am a HUGE fan of Vince Flynn and the Mitch Rapp series. I also read everything John Grisham writes. I don’t believe either of those authors influenced my memoir but I thoroughly enjoy their writing style. I also read just about every non-fiction, military history book I can get my hands on.

What are you working on now?
I’m developing ideas on writing about my second tour of duty in Baghdad, Iraq with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division. My Battalion received a Valorous Unit Citation at the completion of an 18-month tour of duty based on experiencing the longest sustained combat of any Battalion in the war’s history. We suffered over 20 Soldiers killed in action and roughly 125 Soldiers wounded in action in heavy fighting in an around Baghdad. My focus will be on the Soldiers we lost in battle as I do not want their sacrifices lost in history.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still new at writing and promoting. So far I have only used word of mouth through Facebook and Instagram. I have relied on my friends and family to push the word and share the links to my book which has kept my book as the #1 new release in it’s genre for the first week. I’m also holding strong in the top 20 overall in Afghan Military History against books with big name publishers and promoters.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Sit down and start writing. I procrastinated for a long time before I forced myself to start. Once I began and it just flowed naturally. Have confidence and take a chance.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“You will never know if you don’t try.”

What are you reading now?
I am patiently waiting for a new book called “All Secure: A Special Operations Soldier’s Fight to Survive on the Battlefield and the Homefront” by Tom Satterly

What’s next for you as a writer?
Research and compiling data for my next endeavor. Lots of traveling to visit the families and friends of fallen comrades that I will feature in my next book.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Good to Go by Harry Constance
Inside Delta Force by Eric L. Haney
American Assassin by Vince Flynn
The Bible

Awesome Author - Janis Bruns

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a personal development coach and I teach and support people in overcoming difficult changes in life, like quitting a job and finding their passion, getting over fear and anxiety, etc. I am a retired Special Forces officer and been coaching people since then. I use breathing and mindfulness as the core instruments in order to make every change pleasurable. This is my first book!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called The Transition Manual – Successful Integration After Military Service Into Functional Civilian Life.

There is a stirring number of retired soldiers and veterans who are struggling with integration in civilian life. Relationship difficulties, emotional problems, financial insecurities, and many other concerns after leaving the military. I had it all of this after retirement but I was working hard on doing the inner work and cleared my mind and emotions. Many soldiers find themselves in addictions or homeless just because their minds can’t adapt to the new environment. I wrote this book to inspire and empower them so they could go through this process much easier and enjoy the new life.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do all the mind mapping and then I do deep breathing exercises to expand my consciousness and details would start to come up more easily.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Just Breathe by Dan Brule, The Conversations with God by Neal Donald Walsh, The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle

What are you working on now?
Translating this book in my native language (Latvian)

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start writing, don’t overthink too much. I thought that my book would be only 30k words big, but as I just continued with writing I ended up with 54k. Just write about the stuff you find helpful and interesting to yourself.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
No matter what – It’s gonna be OK!

What are you reading now?
Paulo Coelho – The Alchemist

What’s next for you as a writer?
Creating an online course for my book. This is a great tool to give more feelings to readers and learn from you personally.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

Awesome Author - Nolon Savas

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have been a journalist, soldier, enumerator, roughneck, roustabout, prospector, blaster, doodlebug, security guard, and a convict librarian in a New Mexico prison. Fact is, I’ve done many more jobs just to stay afloat than the ones mentioned. I worked the deeprock mines after graduating high school. I joined the Army to escape Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, a diagnosis I would not learn of until I was sentenced to a halfway house for six months in 2004. I weighed 110 pounds after the ravage was done. I started writing again while a resident in a homeless shelter following the halfway hotel experience, placing it aside to take care of my mother in her dying days. How long did it take to write “Shadowdancer”? About forty-two years. It cost me a great deal more to research the substance of the book than the reasonable cover price to buy it.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Shadowdancer”. This is my debut book. Shadowdancer, and the next four books, are based upon my personal life experience.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I writing in my library, the largest room in my house other than my living room. I spend most of my time at home here as I have no distractions like a television, radio, or bothersome neighbors.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Any and all of the Southern Gothic writers.

What are you working on now?
I am co-authoring a memoir with another published author who has recently undergone chemotherapy for breast cancer. Did I mention that she is autistic? The book is as informative as it is positively reinforcing. It should be published before the end of 2019.

I am also working on book two of my four book semi-autobiography. It should be available to the public by early March, 2020.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook at Pariah Press, and Twitter at Nolon Savas.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read, read, read. Once you have read thousands of books a fledgling writer should try his or her hand at established forms of poetry: villanelles, odes, sonnets, and the like. Become a keen observer of life. Talk with as many diverse people as you can. Above all LIVE LIFE. Other than Emily Dickinson, I firmly believe that living life to its fullest is a prerequisite. Travel is, after all, a proven form of education.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The Golden Rule. Sadly, there’s a cultural disconnect today with treating others as you would like to be treated.

What are you reading now?
“The Peyote Religion Among The Navaho” by David F. Aberle.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Complete my quartet of books of which “Shadowdancer” is the first book, followed by a book about living with the maelstrom that was my psychopathic brother. That book WILL NOT be written in first-person narrative but will be based on a true story as are my quartet.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Holy Bible, a massive collection of the world’s proverbs, Story of Civilization by Will and Arial Durant (I fudged; it’s an eleven volume set), and a blank book for writing in (ever-so-small to conserve space)

Awesome Author - Neil Gray

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m part entrepreneur, part nerd, part strategist, part author, part explorer, part father, part husband.

First and foremost in my day job I am an enabler. I’ve successfully created & exited two start-ups, and held senior positions in multinational companies in the UK & USA. I’ve the ability to innovate, strategically plan, model & subsequently deliver. My proven, repeated accomplishments of delivering to the bottom line, removing pain points & aligning teams; are based on clear leadership, technical comprehension, strong people skills and a drive to win.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Planting Light Bulbs is my first book and born out of frustration of trying to push water uphill with many managers who continue to believe the way to do things is the same as it always was.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Much like my pasta I just throw it at a wall and see if it sticks.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Many of the great business books inspired me in life but typically the books are one dimensional. They have a point to make and replay it multiple different ways to get the point across. This might be the way to sell books as I was not inspired to write in a similar style – I had lots of points I wanted to convey.

What are you working on now?
Another start up. Writing a book was a journey in of itself and I came across many problems that needed to a better answer.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Since its a business book the most social site applicable to raising the awareness of the book has been LinkedIn.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t quit the day job. Writing a book hoovers time and the direct financial rewards are far from guaranteed.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best way to get things done is to simply begin.

What’s next for you as a writer?
To be decided. It depends on how my initial book is received.

Awesome Author - Anna Marie Jehorek

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a wife, mom, Irish dancer, and pug mom living in Raleigh, North Carolina. I’ve always been a writer but it wasn’t until I took a creative writing course a couple of years ago that I tried my hand at fiction.

My love of writing paired with a passion for traveling to Ireland inspired me to pen my first novel, The Cottage on Lough Key. The fictional story takes place in the town of Boyle in County Roscommon which is my maternal grandfather’s hometown. Hence, writing the book was a labor of love.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is The House with The Georgian Door. The contemporary romance was inspired when I was writing an article about a bed & breakfast in Virginia. While there researching, I thought to myself a B&B would be a great setting for a novel. I knew just the B&B!

When I traveled to Ireland back in my single days, there was a bed and breakfast I fell in love with. That B&B and its location was the inspiration for The House with The Georgian Door. Although the story is fiction, I was constantly picturing that place as I wrote.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if it’s unusual, but I like to get away and isolate myself. Being alone with my thoughts, some soft music, and a pug or two to keep me company is the ideal environment for writing. The solitude allows me to let my imagination take me places without distractions.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
When I was a little girl I read All-of -a-Kind-Family by Sydney Taylor and it captivated me. To this day, it’s an all-time favorite and a book I recommend for young readers. Now that I’m an adult, authors like Maeve Binchy, Philippa Gregory, Emily Giffin, and Taylor Caldwell are some of my favorites who have influenced me and my writing.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I’m busy with the promotion of my latest novel, The House with The Georgian Door. As a self-published author, there’s so much that needs to be done. I’m also writing on my travel website, PulllOverAndLetMeOut.com.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’d have to say Facebook and Twitter have been great for promoting books. Additionally, I have a website called PullOverAndLetMeOut.com which is a travel site where I’m able to share my travels and my books with readers.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Persevere. Half the battle is actually completing the story. So many authors start a project and put it aside. Even if you can only write a page a day, by the end of a year, you’ll have 365 pages!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I know it’s nothing new but the best advice I heard was to show it don’t tell it! So often when I’m reading and re-reading a manuscript I’m picking out dialogue that I really didn’t need because I could show it instead.

What are you reading now?
Right now, I’m afraid I’m so busy with my book and travel website, I’m not reading anything. However, once things calm down a little, I intend to immerse myself in the Outlander series.

What’s next for you as a writer?
The next project I’m planning to begin is a third novel set in Ireland. I’ve got a few ideas I’m running through my head but I’ll need to do more research and perhaps a little travel before putting pen to paper.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Picking only three or four books is tough, but I’d have to say I’d take The Constant Princess by Philippa Gregory, Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy, a dictionary, and a thesaurus – I’ll need them so I can write more books!

Awesome Author - Y. Daher

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Y. Daher is author based in Toronto, Canada. He had a passion for writing and reading since he was a child. Although he would make up many stories and characters in his mind, he never had the courage to put them on paper. All of that changed in his junior year when he had to hand out a literary essay based on his favorite T.V series: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. His teacher told him it was a great work, but wasn’t surprised since she always knew Daher was a great writer and was surprised he hadn’t written anything yet. He let that statement sink in and thought; why not? Two years later and he published his first book: Raw Kingdom which is available on E-Book and paperback.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is also the first of a series in which I was working for a long time. It was loosely inspired from my own experience dealing with the fact that I’ve been accustomed to one particular way of life, and as I grew older and started to realize the hard truths of life, I thought to myself; this can’t be it! This can’t be who I am! I’m can’t be defined by what surrounds me, surely I’m more than that. And that was the start of my journey of self-discovery. A journey that Khadir will also partake in his adventure in Djadzele.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to be very inconsistent in how much writing I get done. But that isn’t due to laziness or procrastination. I will write as much as ideas flow into my head. I almost never write just for the sake of writing, I need to make sure that what I write has a strong substance so that when its time to edit, I won’t be looking at my screen asking if what sort of substance I consumed writing this.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
This may come as a surprise, but a lot of my inspiration comes from comic book style of writing. Particularly those of the late 70s to the late 90s. Don Mcgregor and Christopher Priest were among my favorites to read (particularly because I’m a huge Black panther fan).
A lot of the writing style I used in Raw Kingdom was inspired by the earlier solo BP stories such as Panther’s rage and my favorite: Panther’s quest. But my biggest inspiration is Ta Nehisi Coates, responsible for masterpieces such as Between the world and me and We were eight years in power. And the fact that he also contributed to BP run sealed it for me.

What are you working on now?
Right now I’m drafting the sequel of Raw Kingdom, which will delve deeper into the world of Djadzele and introduce Khadir to part of the world he thought he would never see, let alone, exist.

Awesome Author - Mawson Bear

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Not many writer- bears have published books. That’s probably because big paws hit several keys at a go which makes an awful muddle. But with help I managed to finish It’s A Bright World To Feel Lost In.
I like to ponder about this baffling world. Almost everything baffles me. I like dapper bow ties and piles of cushions. I am proudly plump and roundish.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
She Ran Away From Love was inspired by pondering about adventures and quests and finding oneself.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Bears only write between naps, and so quite often not much gets done.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Charles Schultz’s work, Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes, AA Milne (but of course), and Shaun Tan.

What are you working on now?
The next book is called Dreamy Days and Random Naps, and after that, Islanders.
Like She Ran Away From Love, these are little picture books suitable not only for children but for grownups.
