Awesome Author - James Miller

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Becoming a writer wasn’t even on my bucket list. My professional life had been spent in the aviation business. I’m now 71 years old, and it astounds me how God could have blessed someone like me—one who has made so many mistakes along the way.
Our aircraft companies supported outreaches to destitute people around the world, and even sponsored a chaplaincy program in a Texas facility for troubled youth. But I became burned out after so long and decided to retire at the age of 52. That’s when the real trouble started, the beginning of a sixteen-year-long wilderness in my life.
First, we lost 80% of our retirement in the financial markets crash of the year 2000. After that, I lived in a state of depression and panic for several years. It was a type of PTSD, I realize now. I tried hard to trust God through it all, but eventually I didn’t even trust myself any longer.
Thereafter, I failed at everything I tried. After sixteen years, I was so defeated that I could no longer see any purpose for my life. I ran out of options, and the boredom coupled with failure was killing me. I reached the point of wanting God to just take me home.
Through it all, my wife Carla was a rock. She never wavered in her trust for me or for her Lord. She’s my hero. I wish I were more like she is.
After I came to the end of myself, something miraculous happened. One night, out of nowhere a story invaded my head about a US Marine pilot who . . . well you get the picture—Cody Musket, a man who has reached the point of desperation, who meets a heroic woman whose faith is unbreakable.
The story grew in my head for months, but it never occurred to me to write a book. (Doofus!) I even asked God to take this story out of my head because it was disrupting my life. Finally, after about six months, I told Carla about the story. I told her I was gonna go crazy if I didn’t at least write it down. She said, “I think you should.” That’s it. “I think you should.”
I began to write feverishly and could not stop for two years. I studied hard to learn how to write fiction. No Pit So Deep, The Cody Musket Story was released in 2016 as a stand-alone novel, and I have now expanded this saga to a four-book series with a combined 440 customer reviews from around the world, many of which reveal lives that have been impacted. The first book has been on the Kindle #1 Bestseller list twice, and has won several awards.
So, there I was just a few years ago, thinking my life was over. Feeling abandoned. But if my life had not slowed down to an agonizing crawl, I would never have written this story. If I had achieved the retirement I had always dreamed about, I might have missed my greatest destiny.
I have learned that God can have a surprise waiting even when things seem hopeless. Where we may see an ending, God just sees a brand-new place to start if we trust Him.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
As I have said, my Cody Musket Series (4 books) is my only project so far. Sometimes the storyteller finds a story, but once in a while a story finds the storyteller. The Cody Musket Story literally found me when I wasn’t even looking. I didn’t know I could write until then.
The inspiration for Cody’s character was inspired by my own desperate circumstances described above. Without realizing it at the time, I wrote into Cody’s character my own failures and faults. His heroic side is the man I wish to be.
Along the way through the years, while doing lay ministry work, I had been approached by a number of US war veterans, and had been told some horrendous, life-altering battlefield stories. I also learned of their struggles as vets tried to reacclimate after returning home. I am not a certified therapist or other medical professional, but I am a good listener. As I listened, I gained insight into the mind and deep soul of some war veterans. After I began to write Cody’s and Brandi’s story, I saw it as an opportunity to include real events and keen insights as had been revealed to me by real heroes I had known. The Cody Musket Series is fiction which contains some of these real events.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Writers’ habits differ according to personality and purpose. I’m not striving to become known as an author, but I would love it if my character, Cody Musket, and his counterpart, Brandi Barnes, became household names. Their stories represent us all.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
When I was 8 years old, I read The Mark of Zorro by Johnston McCulley. Even though I was a kid at the time, that one still stands out. The Zorro character had honor and purpose.
At the age of 12, I read Serenade to the Big Bird, a personal memoir by Bert Stiles, a WWII US bomber pilot.
In recent years, Wild at Heart by John Eldredge and The Three Battlegrounds by Francis Fragipane both had a tremendous impact on me.

What are you working on now?
Audiobooks. That’s my next major step. After that, hopefully, a motion-picture deal.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve had success interacting with readers on social media, particularly while doing guest blogging and promotions. One particular method which I tried recently achieved greater results that I expected. It was an experiment. I let my lead characters tell their own stories (500 words or less) as a way to introduce my book.
Here’s one example:

“Hello everybody. I’m Cody Musket. Much of my story was inspired by real events, so even though I’m a fiction character, it doesn’t seem like fiction to me. I’m a former US Marine F/A-18 pilot who met with unfortunate circumstances in Afghanistan, but was blessed to eventually become a major-league baseball player afterward.
“I first saw Brandi when I was a rookie with the Astros. Our team was in Pittsburgh to play the Pirates, but the Friday night game was rained out. I was about to implode. The military secrets and memories I was holding inside were destroying me. Baseball had become my only refuge from the pain.
“When Brandi walked past me in the theater that rainy night, she reminded me of sunlight and better days. I didn’t wanna stare at her, but I couldn’t help myself. The O2 rushed right out of my chest. She wasn’t the least impressed, but I followed behind her at a distance. That’s when it happened.
“These three guys in ski masks came from nowhere and tried to abduct her. Well, I totally lost it. Witnesses said I was . . . like, completely out of control. I mean, I still don’t know what kept me from killing those guys.
“Even Brandi was afraid of me afterward. But she was as curious about me as I was about her. We became friends, then gradually she saw how messed up I was. I figured she wouldn’t want anything to do with me after that, but . . . I could see she was a caring person. Then I learned her father was a decorated marine and a Purple Heart winner.
“Brandi was a single mom who wrote investigative reports for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She had exposed a child-trafficking ring, and she had a price on her head. I fell in love that first night with this brave woman who risked her life to save children, and whose father had won medals for courage in battle.
“We were now both on the syndicate’s hit list. But even as we pressed on through the crisis together, she helped me discover that Jesus has a style of His own, that He’s in a class by Himself. I mean, the things that happened in Afghanistan . . . the people who died because of me . . . I didn’t know people like me could be forgiven and even healed.
“See, I thought I was in a pit so deep that even God couldn’t find me, but Brandi . . . she never gave up on me. She knew how to listen to God, and she loved me too much to leave me in that pit. The underworld figures who sought our lives were no match for her prayers, and, as they say, the rest is history.”

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I can only advise myself, because we all have different goals. Here is my personal mantra: Write better but fewer books. I feel that many authors sell themselves short because they are rushed, thinking that the more books they write in a given amount of time, the more popular they will become. That only works if your finished product is the very BEST you can produce. Our modern culture is held hostage by time. Time can be a tyrant, ticking away like a relentless metronome in your mind, robbing you of your best creativity. Don’t be afraid to set aside your book for a few weeks, then come back to it and read what you’ve written. You will be surprised at what you see. That’s when my greatest creativity seems to kick in.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Don’t try to be just like everyone else. If you want to make a difference, set a new path.” – James Nathaniel Miller (my father)

What are you reading now?
The Ground Kisser by Lisa Worthey Smith

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am getting requests to write a 5th book in the Cody Musket series, but I am reluctant to write again until I have another story that grips me, with a plot never told before, and one that has something to say that’s vital. I believe that is what my readers would expect more than anything.

Awesome Author - Mike Flinn

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I came to the writing game late, after spending the greater part of my life in other pursuits. I have always had an interest in history and genealogy and especially Civil War history. I also have a great interest in the history of my little corner of the world, Adel and Dallas County, Iowa. I wrote my first book after retiring and running out of things to do quicker than I, or my dear wife, thought. I spent a cold Iowa winter at my computer researching and writing “Most Exciting Day,” the story of an actual 1895 bank robbery in my hometown of Adel, Iowa. After getting away with that (and actually receiving some accolades), I wrote “A Soldier’s Bounty” a historical fiction novel. The book was well received by those that read it (mostly family and friends and friends of friends) but several readers asked “But what happened to…?” In order to answer that question for these people who had been kind enough to read my work and comment on it, I wrote “The Silent Cannons.” Since writing these three works, without any member of my family trying to have me declared mentally unstable, I am now working on another story that continues with the family of my first two stories. This next story takes them into the period of 1917/1918 and world war 1. It delves into the war and the great Spanish Flu outbreak that accompanied it. True, it was a sad and tragic time, but, as with my other projects, I have “snuck a little humor into the story.” I hope to continue writing as long as I have readers. After all, we have the Great Depression, WW2, the 50’s, the 60’s and etc. to explore. I just have to keep taking my Geritol so I can live long enough to write it.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Whisky Money.” It is a historical fiction novel about The Great Depression, World War Two and the Greatest Generation. I was born a few days after the D-Day invasion and grew up knowing many of the great American heroes who fought in WW2 and came home to form the greatest generation. My generation will always admire them.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes

What authors, or books have influenced you?
John Steinbeck’s “Grapes of Wrath,” Sinclair Lewis’ “Main Street” and Babbitt,” and every book written by Steven Ambrose.

What are you working on now?
I am currently in between projects but I am doing some research on local history and especially capital crimes.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep you day job.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I hope I haven’t heard it yet.

What are you reading now?
“Cutting for Stone” by Abraham Verghese.

What’s next for you as a writer?
A story that takes place in the 50’s and a story about Viet Nam.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Anything by Stephen Ambrose or David McCullough.

Awesome Author - Rich Pitman

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Newport, South Wales. But recently moved to the picturesque Forest of Dean which is situated in the western part of the county of Gloucestershire, England. I have a five book publishing contract with Crimson Cloak Publishing based in the USA.

I have written a book series following the life of a young boy, Jimmy Threepwood, who is one day destined to destroy the world. Its a story of Evil vs Good. A story about whether a character will go through with destiny or will he become a hero. The first book is entitled Jimmy Threepwood and the Veil of Darkness. The second book in the series is Jimmy Threepwod and the Elixir of Light.

Jimmy Threepwood and the Veil of Darkness was voted as a finalist for the People’s Book Prize.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I have just this minute finished the final edit of the third book which is entitled Jimmy Threepwood and the Echoes of the Past. That will be published in 2020 by Crimson Cloak Publishing.

A number of things inspire my books. Especially things from my life. A friend of mine once owned an old yellow Mini with a red door. As we drove down the road, water would spray up through the rust in the floor. So I decided to add this as a character called Frank the Frog.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I write I try and visual the section of the story, almost like a movie. Then I write down what I saw. I find if I visualise the action its easier to write.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love James Patterson, especially the Alex Cross series. Even though its a different genre, I enjoy the stories and the twists in the plots and I have tried to add that into my children/young adult adventure series.

What are you working on now?
I am now going to concentrate on the fourth story. This one is titled Jimmy Threepwood and the Divider of Fabric and Space. I have also written my 3 year old daughter a story about a Space Race and a Spoon which I may look to illustrate and publish.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I find the best way to promote any book would be to go into schools. It has two effects. It inspires the children and gives them a valuable insight into writing and how to start and come up with ideas and it also allows me to share with them my stories. There was nothing better than a parent contacting me to tell me their son and his friends were in the garden playing as Jimmy Threepwood characters.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep going! This is a very challenging environment, but keep writing stories.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?

What are you reading now?
I do read a lot of books. Currently I am reading Dean Koontz Lightning – really great book about time travel.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Next for me would be to finish the Jimmy Threepwod series, then I have a few ideas for a new story and the aim would be to try and have that published. I carry a notebook with me and I am always writing ideas down.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
It would have to be:
Stephen King – 11/22/63 (Excellent book about JFK)
Dan Brown – Origin
Dan Brown – Inferno
James Patterson – Jack and Jill

Awesome Author - Stephen Tomporowski

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been an Electrical Engineer for almost 44 years and an electronic music composer (Syemak on Soundcloud) for about 7. I’ve only been publishing for the past 3 years but before that I dabbled but never went anywhere. I only got started seriously writing after meeting the author Yvonne Marrs online. Via my eBay store. She acts as my editor and one of my books, as of 6/30/19, I’ve published four, she was a co-author. When I met Yvonne, I had had a story in mind and I sat down and started to write it. I’d say the first 150 pages came out in a rush. Then I kept going further. From those initial 3 months of writing, I had written parts of five books, three of which have been published in the Raven of Iskandar series: Raven: The Call from Central; Raven: Mirabelle and Raven: The Triballi Incident. The last was just published.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I just published, on Amazon, Raven: The Triballi Incident. This is the third book of a series. The series revolves around the most popular sport of the future in which teams of ten players compete with each other in stadium sized simulations in events such as Team Deathmatch and Assault. The books were inspired by my own ‘team’ of bots on Unreal Tournament 2004. The Triballi Incident concerns the Tournament Champions taking a tour of several worlds. My beliefs on politics and culture are prominent, so I’d guess you say it was satire but I have a tendency to write laugh-out-loud satire.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not sure if this is unusual, but I tend to write incidents, then collect them into a story line and then write lots of bridge scenes. I’m most chagrined that the bridge scenes tend to be better than the incidents.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Yvonne Marrs is a great cheerleader and instructor. My favorite authors and Gene Wolfe and Jack Vance. I’d have to mention the George R. R. Martin has inspired me to keep writing my series and not make my readers wait for years!

What are you working on now?
I have two books in the works. One is the fourth book in the Raven of Iskandar series, tentatively titled Raven: Necris. After than will be the fifth book, which will actually have a different point of view and that tentative title is Vysse: Bestmartin. Readers of the series will actually recognize all those names. The other book will be a collection of thoughts on management and culture and I have a great title for it, which I won’t tell you because it’s so good someone would steal it!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Actually still looking, hopefully it’ll be the Awesome Gang! I’ve done paid advertising on Amazon and Facebook. I have yet to properly do advertising on Amazon but Facebook gets you lots of likes but little sales.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I hate to sound trite, but just do it. Get into the habit of writing and you’ll get better and better. You’ll need someone to read your stuff and offer suggestions. From my experience, someone from a different culture is a plus.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“You know what you have to do, just freaking do it!” That’s from one of my characters in the Raven of Iskandar series. And, no, I didn’t get it from some commercial but the exact origin is lost in history.

What are you reading now?
Trader Horn by Alfred Aloysius Horn. It’s an autobiographical story about being a trader in Africa in the late 19th century. And I constantly read various translations of the Bible.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Probably to finish the Raven story. I actually have the final two chapters written and they’re great. I cried when I wrote them and every time I go back and read them, however, they are very hopeful and not tragic.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
First, I’d bring a Bible. That will keep you entertained for years. Other than that, probably the Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe.

Awesome Author - Aba Dadson

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Growing up as a disabled person in west Africa, I was mocked, ridiculed and rejected so many times I ended up believing I was ‘faulty’. I was told to shut up and not speak my mind, I was told to sit quietly and take pity on myself I ended up believing I had nothing good to offer anyone.
But God saw my pain and picked me up and dusted me clean. He has used me to mentor youths and inspire people to be their personal best. I am still a work in progress, but I hope yours will be a life God uses mine to touch too.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
For years I struggled with my self image, depression and anxiety in silence. I was convinced I was alone and that I had nothing good to offer anyone. I was constantly in emotional pain and conflict. I read and read and prayed until I couldn’t pray anymore. But as I finally gave in and decided not to struggle anymore, I heard the still small voice of God within me and He led me to some scriptures and people who helped shape my life and heal my heart and mind.

This book is about my journey with God, how He helped me find myself, healing to my heart and mind and purpose. I wrote this book hoping that people who are hurting and suffering in silence will know that they are not alone and that God cares and can heal them too. I hope that the steps I learnt from God will help people going through similar struggles to find peace, healing and purpose like I did.

Awesome Author - Braylee Parkinson

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in northern Utah, and this is my first novel. Year ago I published a book of poetry, but Who She Was is the first full length publication.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Who She Was: A Sylvia Wilcox Mystery was inspired by random news reports and events I observed while living in Detroit, Michigan. Basically, a bunch of small, unrelated events started to swim around in my head, and I figured they would make a good story.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am a binge writer. Nothing comes for weeks at a time, but when the creative juices start to flow, there is no stopping them! I will sit in front of the computer and write for several hours at a time. There are times when I don’t leave my house for days at a time because I am writing.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Stephen King and Jonathan Kellerman. Stephen King is the master of description, and Kellerman has a way of pulling in readers and keeping them, even if his books contain unrealistic elements. I like stories I can get lost in, and both of these writers provide the escape I desire.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on Displacement and The Remnant, the next two novels in the Sylvia Wilcox Mysteries series. I plan on releasing one of them in November, and the other in February of 2020. I’m not quite sure which one will be released first, but it will most likely be Displacement.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use my website to promote my writing on my website, brayleeparkinson.com. Readers who subscribe to my newsletter receive a chapter of a serial novel each month.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice to new authors is to find people in the literary world who have achieved what you are seeking. For example, if you are just starting to write and consider publishing, look for writers who have already published books. If you are looking for a long term writing career, look for writers who have been successful and engaged in the writing business for at least five years. Learn from those who are where you want to be.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Your mindset will determine the level of success you will have as a writer.

What are you reading now?
I am currently reading Once Gone by Blake Pierce.

What’s next for you as a writer?
My next move as a writer is complete my next two books, and move into a full-time writing life. My goal is to be able to do that by spring of 2020.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb, Ordinary People by Judith Guest, and Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison

The other is the fourth book to my ghost hunters series called Deep in the Darkness. It is set to release in October.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
There’s a method? Why do I not know about this method thing? Just kidding. Honestly, I try to stay on top of sending out a Newsletter on time at the first of every month. I also set up promotions ahead of time for when a book is set to release. My “method” isn’t always the best, but with a changing market, I am constantly learning something new.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be ruthless in the pursuit of your dreams. Practice makes perfect and the more you write, the better you are going to get. Connect with bloggers and authors. Learn from them but also come up with your own ideas and don’t second guess yourself when going after them. The rules are constantly changing because someone dared to change them.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just keep writing. The more you write, the more you have out there. The more you have out there, the more you will get recognized.

What are you reading now?
Dead Ringer by Stacey Rourke

What’s next for you as a writer?
The NY Best Sellers list. 🙂 Until then, I’m going to keep word vomiting and making the magic happen. When it does happen, the magic will continue because I could never imagine life without writing. I’ve been writing since I was seven-years-old. It’s what I do.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
This question, I tell you I think I answer it different every time because I am always finding new books I fall in love with.
For sure the best of Edgar Allen Poe.
Misery by Stephen King.
Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward. Obviously, I’m going to need some steam if I’m abandoned alone. Is the boxed set allowed? Lol. No, but seriously?

Awesome Author - Bryan Butvidas

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Oh lord, where do I start? I’ll do the easy question first – I’ve written five books and one was even published by Kensington Books. Also did a cool children’s book that sold actually well. As for me? I grew up in a horrible town where my only safe place was programming on the computer or playing D&D with the few people who’d admit to being players. Went to college, dropped out because my counselor said it wasn’t worth my time so I went on to start my tech businesses, clothing companies, magazines and even a makeup company.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Airith – The Kentilan Wars. This book is actually my way of dealing with many issues within my life from when I was a child to a young adult. For some reason, all these scenarios turned into a movie in my head and characters started to form and the plot just grew and grew. So in 2012 after my Christwire Book, I sat down and started writing, released it, but due to my dyslexia and other learning blocks, the book didn’t come out as I wanted it. For the seven years after that, I spent every day writing notes, brainstorming and building a story which turned into 400 pages of brain dumb…So now, I’ve been slowly digesting it into a ten part book series.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wake up at 3am with a list of ideas that I jot down into my ‘brain dump’ folder almost every day.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Believe it or not…I do not read books. I have horrible dyslexia and have a learning disability when it comes to reading.

What are you working on now?
Book numero two in the Airith Sage.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I personally message influencers I think would enjoy my book. I send them a book, a custom made piece of clothing based on the book and some other cool items. The current book I even did a soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXJkdB6Vjwg).

Do you have any advice for new authors?
It isn’t about the sales, it is about the story you’ve introduced into the world.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The grass isn’t greener on the other side, you’re just doing a shitty job with your own lawn.

What are you reading now?
mostly memes.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan on taking English and creative writing classes at the local CC.
