Awesome Author - Genevi Engle

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
After serving five years in the Marine Corps, I started focusing more on my writing. In total I’ve published four but I’m currently publishing two under my very own publishing company, Corvus Quill Press. I hope to adapt all of my book into film scripts.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Escape From Sonne Graol; Prison on The Sun”

It’s a mashup of the German word “Sonne” which means Sun and the Irish word “Graol” which means gracious. Put together, it illustrates the desperation of the characters and how bad they don’t wish to be punished by the sun. It shows how desperate our protagonist is.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I listen to film soundtracks while I write. The music from my favorite films like The Matrix, X-men, and The Dark Knight bring inspiration to my characters and their settings.

I also act out certain portions of the story to put myself in the shoes of certain characters.

I have an obsession with Arizona Tea which fuels my writing.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson,
House Of The Scorpion by Nancy Farmer,
1984 by George Orwell,
Deathnote(Manga) by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata,

What are you working on now?
A book called “Sky City”, which is a post apocalyptic story about a small family, living in an ark. As their food supplies begin to decrease, they must set sail on a flooded Earth, in search of a city that floats above the doomed planet.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I usually film my own book trailers using actors and models and promote on social media.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write from your heart on the first draft. Edit once you’ve completed the book and write a book that you’d love and wouldn’t want to put down.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t make art to satisfy everyone. Make art to satisfy yourself and to say what you want to say. People will listen.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to adapt my works into screenplays and begin my first horror story.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire
Perfect Dark Initial Vector
Maximum Ride: School’s Out Forever

Awesome Author - Anne C. Miles

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi, my name was -almost- Florence Daphne, but thanks to the intervention of my father, it is Anne Christine. My mom wanted to call me “Flossie.” Shudder. Dodged a bullet. I’ve written one fiction book so far, and am in the midst of writing the sequel. The series is called “The Call of the Lorica.”

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The book is called Sorrowfish. When my daughter first went to college we didn’t speak for a few years. She was going through a lot personally and didn’t want to share those things with me out of shame and fear of rejection. I was deeply hurt because we had been very close and I went through grief. Part of grief is anger. One day, while furious I thought, “She’s just selfish.”
And then another thought came.
“No, she’s sorrowfish.”
And somehow I understood. She was acting from deep pain.
I’ve always believed the music we hear in our minds can sometimes be helpful messages and referred to such experiences as “listening to Cosmic DJ.” Then I’m a fantasy nut. I’d started in 1998 to develop this other universe we visit in our dreams. My daughter is a sculptor and I think all of this together just fused in my mind and gestated until out popped this book. In my fantasy world, music is magical. My main character is a young sculptor. It’s very special to me.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Outlines give me cooties. I have them… but seriously. I develop a weird rash. I think I’m allergic.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Susan Cooper, CS Lewis, David Eddings, Barbara Hambly, Tolkien, Robert Jordan, LE Modesitt, Anne McCaffrey, Steven Pressfield, Dallas Willard and John Eldredge.

What are you working on now?
Book two of the series which is tentatively named Heartfire. I’m looking for . btter title but right now it’s the only one that fits.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m a newbie. But I’ve been in marketing for my day job for a long time. I think influencer outreach is likely going to be my best friend.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read the War of Art by Steven Pressfield.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Develop a heart with ears on it. A hearing heart.

What are you reading now?
I just finished a re-read of The Armies of Daylight by Barbara Hambly

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing my series, then writing the prequel.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My Bible, a survival manual, The Screwtape Letters, and The Grey King

Awesome Author - Bill Ricardi

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hey folks! I’m Bill Ricardi. Over the past couple of years, I’ve written seven novels. My first three books (‘Another Stupid Trilogy’) got picked up by Podium Publishing for full audiobook conversion. Since then I’ve started a new trilogy in the Panos universe, and written two books in my urban fantasy series, ‘The Ihy Saga’. The final book is a stand along romance, just now being sent around to publishers.

Though I’m originally from the U.S., I now live in Belfast in the U.K. I love the people, particularly my hubby. It’s also got a great quality of life for a low cost of living, important for a full time author!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest published book is ‘Cadence’, sequel to ‘Rhythm’, the second book in The Ihy Saga. The entire series was inspired by my own past relationship with bullying and abuse, and the way that music saved me.

It is manifested in the premise that a certain ancient Egyptian god, Ihy (god of sex and music), is the only god with real power in the modern world. He looks for Hosts, people who will share their body with the spirit of one of his 72 children. Enter Lucas (aka ‘Lucky’), an abused, legally emancipated young man living in his car out in the Massachusetts woodlands. He accepts the hosting of Izadore (aka ‘Izy’), and together they learn how to control their music-based divine powers.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
After I finish writing a book, I completely shave my head and beard. I feel that it gives me a clean start to whatever the next project might be!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Almost too many to name, but I’ll hit the biggies: Roger Zelazny, Katherine Kurtz, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, R.A. Salvatore, Anne McCaffrey, Lawrence Watt-Evans, Douglas Adams, and Stephen King.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on book 2 of The Blackstaff Siblings, the fifth Panos novel. ‘A Princess of Last Resort’ set the stage for this epic tale of a brother and sister who become unexpected heirs and leaders of an kingdom. All the while they’re on the run, trying to figure out who attacked the northern elflands, and doing their best to get back to their parents.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
At the moment, Prolific Works. They’ve grown my fan club by leaps and bounds.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
You need to put out many, many books before you can make a living at it. There’s no get rich quick shortcuts. it’s all hard work. i use the King ‘On Writing’ system, but that might be too hardcore for some. Whatever you choose, try to write and promote every single day.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
‘Don’t pee on the electric fence.’

What are you reading now?
I just finished the complete Lovecraft collection. Old-school horror done right.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finish The Blackstaff Siblings trilogy, keep writing The Ihy Saga for as long as it inspires me, and pump out more romance titles in my ‘spare’ time. 🙂

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Great Book of Amber
The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
How to Survive on a Deserted Island

Awesome Author - Gabrielle Dahms

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
So far, I have written two non-fiction books about real estate investing. They belong to a series with seven titles in it. The first book “How Trends Make You A Smarter Investor” is available via Amazon and several other distributors and retailers. The second book “Finding Profitable Deals” is launching on June 27, 2019.

I’d like you to know that this series grew out of some twenty years of professional experience in the world of real estate. And I started writing this non-fiction series while also working on a novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The first book How Trends Make You A Smarter Investor is about nine big trends that affect real estate investment and how investors can gain from them. The second book Finding Profitable Deals spells out many real estate niches – some of which readers may never have thought about-, what makes them attractive, how to find great deals in them, and how to assess the niche, etc.

As a real estate broker and investor of twenty years the books aim to guide others through the vast body of knowledge about the field, to save those who are or want to become real estate investors time, money, and painful lessons. Having read many books on the subject, I realized that most other authors write their books as sales tools for their services, membership programs, and systems. While that is fine, the series I am writing wants to inform and educate and help people make good decisions instead. No hype. No sales pitch.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have a regular writing schedule and also write when inspiration strikes. It’s a great combination.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Many. Among them are Isabel Allende, Eudora Welty, William Zinsser, Joseph Campbell, Carlos Fuentes. These writers inspire me. Others exist.

What are you working on now?
On completing the research and first draft of the third book in the series, a book about negotiation.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Ask me about this when I am farther along in the book promotion game.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write and re-write.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Trust yourself – and do the work.

What are you reading now?
Research materials and a friend’s novel.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing the series, then writing my first novel.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Blank journals so I can write. And I love Gandhi’s Book of Prayers, something that might come in handy being stranded.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my first amazing book (Kane) that took me on a journey as well. I have had a passion for writing for over ten years and also write poetry and articles. I plan to expand into kids illustrated books

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Kane is my first and latest release that I’m excited about because it’ll really get you involved and thinking. I was inspired to write this book based off the last chapter in The Best Part. I had wrote that years ago and decided to turn it into something more interesting and juicy.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Of course! It has to come to me in most cases. I can’t just sit down and start writing. I have small visions of what I want to write next so it’s good to have pen and paper nearby.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
To be honest, I haven’t read a book in awhile as most would otherwise think but i do get some inspiration from James Patterson, Ashley and JaQuavis Coleman and the last book I’ve read is Afterburn by Zane, which was very interesting.

What are you working on now?
At the moment im working on putting together a kids book series as well as getting ideas for the next part of Kane.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
There are many ways and websites to choose when promoting and advertising. Awesomegang is an awesome way to promote! Hire experienced but affordable help. Fiverr is good as well.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be consistent. Nothing great happens overnight. Keep writing. The more you expose yourself the more people feel comfortable.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The advise I just gave!

What are you reading now?
Kane: When it’s too good to be true

My own book!

What’s next for you as a writer?

Awesome Author - Elias Akins

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is the first book I’ve written, but I have written small chunks of stories in the past. primarily fanfictions, with a few sprinklings of original works that were all in a sort of action thriller or action sci-fi genre.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Heaven’s Pillar the Last Rainy Night, its a remake of a story I once wrote a few years ago, in fact its going to be a start of a series inspired by the old writings me and a friend created over the course of our friendship. admittedly the tone of the book might be a byproduct of how I was feeling after my friend passed away, but in general the story is also inspired my many Indie RPGs I’ve played that focus on the psychological struggles of the main characters.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When writing notes for my stories I tend to write them as if they are a letter to someone. I’m not sure if its helpful or not I just tend to do that a lot despite the fact that I’m the only one who would ever see these notes and outlines.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m not sure if this is cheating with this question, but I’ve honestly been more inspired by Video games than I have by books. I honestly always wanted to make my own game, but I lack the programming talent to do so. I’ve honestly always been inspired particularly by Hironobu Sakaguchi, not just by the beautiful stories of his games, but just his life story. To think that Final Fantasy was this final project he worked on, his last gambit before going back to school, and to think he built the game focusing on his strengths which was his ability to write a story. There’s something so inspiring about his life, and its something I think a lot of people could relate to.

What are you reading now?
Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong.

Awesome Author - Tessa Schlesinger

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an old woman now, and I can tell you that I have screwed up in every area of life. 🙂 Through all of that, I’ve never stopped writing. I was first published as a young girl when I was 10 or 11 years old.

You can see my portfolio (not updated) here.

I don’t really know how many books I’ve written. I haven’t published most of them. I also removed all of those I did publish on the web about 6 years ago. I’m now starting over.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I wrote this book 10 years ago, and it won through to the second around on Amazon. Unfortunately, at the time, I still hadn’t figure out a lot of things and I didn’t know what I was doing. The cover was terrible, and I had no idea about anything.

Recently, I redid the cover and rewrote a bit of it. It is now the book I want it to be.

The name was originally Memories of a Magician.

The idea came to me ten years earlier. I was sitting at my desk in Johannesburg, South Africa, and suddenly the newspaper office around me totally vanished. I was on an island and it was sinking into the ground. I was a magician and I had done something terrible. It was so real that I actually thought it was happening.

And then it was gone, and I was back in the office.

I thought, “I can write a book on that.” Ten years later I did.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No.

Unless being able to write in any gentre or on any topic is unusual.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
None.

Or if they have, I’m completely unaware of it.

I started reading very early in life. By the time I was 8, I was reading two books a day during school time and a few years later, I was reading four books a day during school vacations. I had read most of the classics by the time I was 14. Books that stand out for me now as I look back was John Wyndhams ‘Day of the Triffids,’ Asimov’s ‘Foundation, Golon’s series on Angelique, Rider Haggard’s Allan Quatermain, Herbert’s ‘Dune,’ and a good few by Roger Zelazny and Robert Heinlein.

What are you working on now?
I’ve just finished writing four non-fiction books, one of which is free. They were written in order to help people with various issues – weight loss, INTJ women (we have a hard time), and lucid dreaming for help with anxiety and other mental health issues.

I’m about to attempt a film script (something I’ve always wanted to do). It’s a time machine story with a difference. I’m also about to start a series of romantic adventure in space.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m really rotten at promoting my books. I don’t know how to. So you’re the first people I am approaching.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
How to become a powerful writer.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Cut out all the adjectives. I can’t believe how my writing improved after that. Concise writing is the best.

What are you reading now?
Christine Feehan

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m really looking forward to writing a film script and starting a series of books about characters that I already love.

So call me a Romantic.

I am. 🙂

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Alexander Dumas – The Three Muskateers or the Count of Monte Cristo.

The latest Ghostwalker series by Christine Feehan.

Awesome Author - Roger Leslie Paige

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m 75 years old and since I retired ten years ago I’ve written 25 books (mainly fiction, some on chess and others on social work-which was my career).

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Wheel of Fortune and other stories. It’s a collection of short stories. Ideas are triggered off by all kinds of every day or odd incidents that have intrigued or interested me.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I write when I feel like it, usually daily. A cup of tea always helps!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Anton Chekhov, Alice Munro, Samuel Beckett, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Franz Kafka, Ernest Hemingway, Stephen Leacock, Alistair MacLeod.

What are you working on now?
More short stories! The latest is a murder mystery, a genre I’ve not explored before. I like there to be a ‘twist’ in what I write.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve no idea! I hope to find out. I put extracts on my Facebook page as I go along.

Do you have any advice for new authors?

Awesome Author - Liz Tuckwell

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in London, England with my husband about fives miles out from the centre. I’ve written two books that I’ve published. The first was “Quirky Christmas Stories”, which I co-authored with my friend Rose Bishop. The second is “Dribs and Drabbles”. I’ve also had a story published in the “MCSI: Magical Crime Scenes” anthology and in the Short Sharp Shock short horror story series.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Dribs and Drabbles”. It was inspired by a love of flash fiction and seeing how a story can be told in as few as words as possible.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do sometimes get up in the middle of the night when I’m stuck by inspiration and wander into my box room, next to our bedroom, where my computer lives to get the idea down before I forget it. My husband is not too keen on this if I forget to shut the door and the light wakes him up!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I would say Charlaine Harris, Ben Aaronovitch and Jasper Fforde. I love all their books although they have different styles of writing. Also, M. R. James, I love his ghost stories.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a novella about a young woman who somehow slips into an alternative timeline and takes the place of the version of herself there. She’s trying to work out where their timelines diverged and how to get back home.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Obviously, sites like Awesome Gang are great. I think they work better than Facebook or Twitter because those forms of social media depend on an awful lot of people looking at them.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Finish what you start. And remember that you can’t edit a blank page. Don’t publish anything until you’re sure it’s as good as it can be.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t compare yourself to other writers, it will only demoralise yourself. And have faith in yourself, don’t assume you won’t succeed before you even try.

What are you reading now?
At the moment I’m reading “The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter” by Theodora Goss. I’ve just finished reading “Breaking the Lore” by Andy Redsmith, which is similar to the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. I’m looking forward to reading Ben’s latest novella, “The October Man”.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m editing my novella and continuing to draft the sequel to it. I hope to be publishing it in the not too distant future. I’ve also got another novel I’ve drafted about a mother and a daughter who have a car crash and wake up to find themselves in a 1930’s murder mystery novel that I’m eager to edit and get published.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“Catch 22” by Joseph Heller, “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, and “1984” by George Orwell. Quite an eclectic bunch but I’m fond of all of them for different reasons. I did think I would choose science fiction or fantasy ones but these are my favourites.

My latest book is a creative venture, “Love in Siesta”-A Collection of Short Stories, released first on 10th National Writers & Poets Meet at Goa, May 26, 2019 and then on June 2, 2019, at Oxford Gallery, Kolkata.
A chance meeting with Nobel Laureate William Golding during college days, our interaction about creative imagination in penning past and future initiated me into the thematics of these stories.

Not exactly. I have a routine, rather time management, at least for an hour a day, I engage myself into writing.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My father Late Manab Gangopadhyay, an academic a noted author and philosopher had been my prime motivation. We have a great library, a personal connection of more than three thousand books, that shaped my consciousness. Books and authors on philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, language and literature across the globe have made way in figuring my critical and creative acumen. Its difficult to select a few.

At present I am translating into Bengali one of my English books on critical literature, “Redefining the Definitions”–A Critical Biography of 20th century exponents in Art and Literature. Also completing a historical novel.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Things have changed these days. From print advertisements to digital platform. My author website contains details of the books. For the latest book there are Visual Book Teasers that have gripped the attention of the readers present in the launch programmes. But I have to learn a lot in terms of modern digital publicity scenario.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
As there are more writers than readers, new authors need to be learned authors too. An exposure to the great works of art and literature, their thematics and stylistics, vision and wisdom, approach and dignity will help an author immensely. A writer must not deprive him or her from such treasures.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The advice of Gladstone as the key to success in any venture, “Stick to it.”

What are you reading now?
“The Decline of the West” by Oswald Spengler, a German philosopher of History

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am planning a project on classical canvas, of untrodden region and customs of a distant land. Already sketched in outlines.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Inheritors by William Golding
Collected Poetic Plays by T S Eliot
Collected Short Stories by Manab Gangopadhyay
Stories & Plays by Albert Camus

Awesome Author - Cat Kydd

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m just a girl from Dallas, Texas who is clearly an artistic individual. I love everything arts related and have delved into various artistic avenues. I love to draw, sing, and create/design digital graphics in addition to writing stories/novels. As a kid, I would read constantly and enjoyed the aspect of using your imagination to get sucked into a fictional world. When I got older, I thought it would be cool to create a novel or series of novels which people would read and be inspired. Of course, I thought there was no way I could create a story that I felt was intriguing or engaging. That is, until the story line of Advent was conjured up from my mind. As for how many books I’ve written, Advent is my first novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my first novel is entitled Advent. Mainly, it was inspired by my first trip to New York City when I was fourteen years old. I was absolutely mesmerized by the tall buildings, city lights and bustling crowd; it felt like a paradise that was previously unknown to me. The historical buildings and events which occurred in the city further intrigued my imagination. I believe New York City possesses an enchanting charm; it’s almost as if the city has a life of its own. It’s not surprising so many authors use New York City as the main location in their novel(s). Since that trip, I could not get New York City out of my head. That was when I started to envision a female character with fiery red hair, which eventually became one of the more prominent characters of my novel. However, I felt she wasn’t suited to be the title character. Thus, taking inspiration from the life of an online friend I used to communicate with from time to time, Andrew Slater was born. The combination of my New York trip and the creation of these two characters are what sparked the conception of the novel.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I do! For some strange reason, it’s quite hard for me to write a story’s first draft on a laptop or desktop computer. To combat this quirk, I begin writing all my stories in a notebook with a pen or pencil. Then, once I’m finished writing a certain chapter, I’ll type up all the contents onto my computer for refining/editing. It’s a bit silly and slightly inconvenient, but it’s the process I used to write Advent. I still have notebooks filled with the unedited chapters and sloppy handwriting.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are so many authors which have influenced me it would take entire pages to list them all. I’ve always been a fan of classics such as Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, George Orwell, and Lewis Carroll. I recently finished reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and I now consider it to be one my favorite classic novels. As for sci-fi and fantasy, I’ve enjoyed works from Neil Gaiman, J.K. Rowling, Rick Riordan, N.K. Jemisin, Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, Michael Crichton, Octavia Butler, and many more. Series such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and The Olympians, The Hunger Games, and The Millennium Trilogy have greatly influenced my writing as well. There are certain authors whose life and work have inspired me, such as Oscar Wilde, Emily Dickinson, Hellen Keller and Sylvia Plath. Reading about their lifestyle and personality traits, they appeared to be such interesting individuals during their lifetime. One of my favorite books which has stuck with me is Looking for Alaska by John Green. I love how the novel brings up the topic of adolescent suffering and I could relate to the Labyrinth of Suffering referenced in the novel. Also, I found many of the novel’s passage to be quite profound, particularly the last couple sentences in the novel (my favorite quote). These influences are not particularly ‘literary’, but anime/manga, video games and comics have been a staple of my life since childhood. Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist has been a huge influence on me; the anime/manga’s writing style is superb. Kazushige Nojima’s writing on the video game series’ Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy is incredible as well. Certain comic books/characters such as Batman and his enemies, Spider-Man, X-Men, numerous Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse characters/stories, and Alan Moore’s Watchmen and V for Vendetta have influenced me as well.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a sequel to Advent. The title and plot are still in the works, but it should create a nice, well-rounded ending for the characters of the Andrew Slater Series. Since I finished Advent, I felt the novel’s ending did not portray a sense of complete closure. My brain refuses to let me end the story at just one book. I believe a second, and final, novel must be completed to truly end Andrew Slater’s story.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That’s a great question; I’m currently figuring this out myself! Being a newly self-published writer is quite challenging. The only real support you have (if you don’t have any connections with/through a publisher) is your friends and family, unless you happen to have a previous social media following. After reading articles about self-publishing, I’ve concluded developing a fanbase takes hard work, perseverance, and luck. You must consistently market yourself and put your books out there, in addition to writing new novels/short stories and publishing your finished product(s). A professional-quality cover and editing job will help drive people’s intrigue in your novel. Also, contacting book bloggers and magazines who review your genre and politely sending them information/asking them to review your novel is a great way to get honest/genuine reviews published on retailer sites (which help drive book sales). Another (and essential) avenue towards book promotion is creating an author website and/or blog and establishing a social media presence. This will give your readers places to find information about your work and connect with you as an author. Finally, of course, submit your book to sites like Awesome Gang for free promotion.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice is quite like my answer above. First, research and read articles on self-publishing. It will give you so much insight on how publishing works, the requirements, driving books sales, etc. When you are published, follow the marketing strategies I listed above and more you’ve discovered along the way. Tell your friends and family and ask them to spread the word; they are your first genuine supporters of your work. Most importantly, keep writing the stories which are formed in your brain and fill your imagination.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
This may sound cliché, but the best advice I ever received was to never give up and not expect your life to attain a certain outcome. Even if things might be rough now, you never know what might happen just around the corner. My life was particularly difficult at a certain period, and I believed things would not change. I was wrong; it did change in unexpected ways, mostly for the better. Once these events occurred, I decided to let go of my previous expectations of my vision of a perfect life. It was as if a huge weight lifted off me and I felt so much freer to express myself and live in the moment. It’s a hard road, but once you let go of your expectations, things seem to work out on their own.

What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. It’s a fascinating read, particularly because it was written and takes place in the 1800’s (Victorian England), yet is unmistakably of the science fiction genre. I’ve never read a science fiction novel set at such an older time period, it’s quite intriguing to me. When I start reading it, I often get confused about the time-period the novel takes place. I must constantly remind myself this book was written in the 1800’s and not the 1970’s. H.G. Wells was quite ahead of his time. I highly recommend it; it’s an enjoyable read.

What’s next for you as a writer?
What’s next for me? I’m not certain to be honest; I can’t really predict the future (though I wish I could). I know I will be writing more novels (currently working on one) and short stories. As I said above, I’m currently working on the second story of Andrew Slater (Advent) and I have another idea for a novel that’s based on a short story I wrote called Emmeline (Available on Wattpad, Inkitt, and my Official Blog). We’ll see how where these ideas lead me.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would have to pick Looking for Alaska as my first choice. As for the other three books, I’d pick Grimm’s Fairytales, House of Leaves (I’ve been wanting to read this novel for a while), and probably an anthology of Philip K. Dick or Edgar Allan Poe. Bringing some of Emily Dickinson’s poetry would be cool as well.

Awesome Author - Stephanie Burkhart

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I currently work as a 911 dispatcher for LAPD. I don’t know where the time has gone because I just celebrated my 19 year work anniversary. I grew up in New Hampshire, and when I was 18, I joined the Army. I got married while I was in the service and relocated to California with my husband.
I’ve been writing since I was a little girl, first my making Spiderman comics and then my own stories. Currently, I have 3 stories published with Prairie Rose Publishing and 4 with 4RV publishing.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Journey of the Heart,” and it’s a vintage romance. It’s set in California wine country right after World War II. When I left the Army and joined my husband in California we used to visit Napa and Sonoma counties often before our firstborn, so the story got the inspiration from those visits.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I always write my stories first in paper and pencil. It usually extends the writing process. I only go to the computer to type when I have a first draft done on paper.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
It’s an eclectic bunch. My earliest influences would be Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Chris Claremont and John Byrne, who are all comic book writers. As a teenager, I enjoyed VC Andrews and Victoria Holt. More recently, I’ve enjoyed reading the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. As far as romance writers go, I like Shana Galen.

What are you working on now?
I have a “ghost” romance I’m working on that takes place in Maine. I also have a romantic suspense I’m developing that takes place in the early 1990’s in Germany. The hero and heroine are on the hunt to find a lost Monet painting.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Sadly, I don’t have much time to promote, but I usually use Twitter and Facebook.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read, read, and read. Taking writing classes or reading books on writing is also helpful.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Be patient. It’s hard to follow since we live in a world of instant gratification.

What are you reading now?
I’m reading “Castle on the Sunset Strip” about the Chateau Mormont by Shawn Levy. It’s a very interesting read and something a little different for me.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully I can finish the projects I started sometime this year!!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Queen of the Tearling for sure! Queen in Waiting by Jean Plaidy. I always enjoy re-reading that one. The Bible of course.

I am a fairly new contemporary romance author, and I have published the first two books in my planned five book Horses Heal Hearts series.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest publication is Racing Toward Love, and its hero is a former British Special Forces soldier who suffers from PTSD. I have worked for the Department of Defense for my entire career, and know soldiers who suffer from PTSD. I wanted to be sure to write a story that accurately portrayed this debilitating condition, and honored the men and women who suffer with it every day of their lives.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I have writer’s block, I go my car and drive anywhere, just to clear my head. Amazingly enough, it works most of the time.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Kathleen Woodiwiss, Johanna Lindsey, Grace Burrowes and Lexi Blake.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on book three of my Horses Heal Hearts series, which I am calling Lionel’s Leap of Faith.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use Facebook marketing quite often, and it seems to be the most efficient way to reach potential readers.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you don’t write the book, you’ll never be published.

What are you reading now?
I’m reading All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have to finish the last two books in the Horses Heal Hearts series, then its on to another family of characters and stories.
