Awesome Author - SE Bloom

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written two books so far, and have plans for many more in the works. I live in Magnolia, Arkansas with a stray husband and a menagerie of animals, most of whom are from earth. A few of them may be alien.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
TAKEN BY THE SLITHERING HORROR is an erotic horror tale which takes the more erotic fantasies of modern women to the strange terrain of apocalyptic left field.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write a few hundred words, get up and walk around, and then repeat. The best ideas come to me when I am distracted.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Numerous books and authors from sundry fields, including science fiction, horror, fantasy, romance, and physical fields such as hard physics and the other sciences.

What are you working on now?
I have an idea for a ‘romantic detective’ story. It is still peculating.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still trying to figure that out.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing and expect it to take some time to get going.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
When you don’t know what to do next, just write.
When you find that you are wasting time, just write.
Just write.

What are you reading now?
A book by Stephen Baxter about the Xeelee.

What’s next for you as a writer?
More writing.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

Awesome Author - Ben Spencer

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hey! My name is Ben Spencer and I’ve been writing for nearly eighteen years. I started off writing literary fiction, but, as my reading tastes have changed over the years, I’ve transitioned over to fantasy (although I do believe it’s fantasy with a literary bent). I’ve written six books, four of which have found their way into the world.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Deer King. The idea for The Deer King came to me a few years ago, but I let it simmer for a while before I began. The epic fantasy genre is awash with medieval tales, so I thought I’d try something a little different–a series inspired by the colonial era. I’m a history teacher, and I love early American history, but, like nearly everyone familiar with the era, I’m well aware of its horrors. The Deer King is my effort to revisit the time period, and then, by adding a couple of tweaks (like say, offsetting the technological superiority of the settlers with an indigenous reincarnated war god), imagine how the outcome might have been a little different.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
If there’s anything unusual about my writing habits it’s that they’re so predictable. Every night from 8:30 to 10:00 p.m. I do my best work when I keep to a routine.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Fate and Furies by Lauren Groff. All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders. Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. And oh so many more.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on Novella Three in The Deer King series, as well as a strange literary/fantasy hybrid of a novel.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve been trying to build reviews organically with The Deer King through goodreads and by reaching out to readers and writers that I know. I’ve had success with a couple of book review sites, and I’m eternally grateful to those kind souls who’ve read my book and written heartfelt reviews.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write. As much as possible. That’s what writers do. Make sure you’re happy with what you’ve written. There’s no point in being published if you don’t actually like the work.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I don’t take advice too seriously. I’m more of a “figure it out yourself” kind of guy. I like listening to Noel Gallagher interviews, because a lot of what he says is tongue in cheek, which I take more seriously than someone being overly earnest.

What are you reading now?
I like to read a mix of styles and genres at once. I’m currently reading The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, The Shell Collectors by Anthony Doer, and American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson by Joseph J. Ellis.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to continue working on The Deer King series for the foreseeable future. As the series is written in novella form, I have a lot of freedom from book to book. If you’re a reader looking for a smart and independent fantasy book series that isn’t afraid to take risks, I encourage you to hop on for the ride.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Hamilton by Ron Chernow. The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. The Winds of Winter by George R.R. Martin (Ha!).

Awesome Author - Caldric Blackwell

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a twenty-something who currently lives in Southern California. I have written four books and am currently working on a fifth. My first book is an adventure-filled early chapter book, titled “The Enchanted River Race,”which follows a team of children as they compete in a river race. My second published book is the beautifully illustrated picture book, titled “The Boy Who Couldn’t Cry Wolf,” which revolves around a young werewolf who is self-conscious about his inability to howl.

My two most recent books are in the middle grade fantasy genre. The first book in the series (titled the Young Alchemist series,) is “The Missing Alchemist,” follows alchemy student Craig Pike and clever archer Audrey Clife as they travel across mysterious lands and battle other-worldly creatures in a quest to rescue a famous alchemist. The second book in the series, which was just released, is “The Sacred Artifact.” The book centers on Craig’s attempt to uncover the secrets of a mysterious artifact, which entails journeying to the birthplace of alchemy to seek the advice of a mysterious, ancient alchemist.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is a middle grade fantasy novel, titled “The Sacred Artifact. The story follows fourteen-year-old alchemy student Craig Pike, Cornelius (a famous alchemist), and Audrey, a witty archer, on an adventure to uncover the secrets of a sacred artifact. Their adventure takes them to a number of magical places, including the birthplace of alchemy itself. They soon discover their journey is more complicated than they anticipated, and they aren’t the only one looking to uncover the secrets of the sacred artifact.

The series was inspired by a fun idea that came to me while brainstorming ideas. Basically, I had this idea of a student alchemist who was struggling to learn the art … yet gets thrust into a situation that really tests his skills. Out of this idea, an entire world of alchemy and interesting characters grew.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t say they are unusual habits but maybe unique. For instance, while working on my latest middle grade fantasy novel, I would listen to entire albums from start to finish. It kind of brought a different vibe to the writing process from just using a random playlist.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
In general, I’m a big fan of Hemigway and Steinbeck. I’m not sure influenced is the correct word, though. I don’t try to emulate them…and I don’t think I ever could. But I’d like to think some of their brilliance, even if just a trace, makes its way into my writing somehow or another. In terms of the middle grade genre, which my two most recent books are a part of, I’m a big fan of Rick Riordan and Lemony Snicket.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently taking a break from the middle grade fantasy genre, now that the Young Alchemist series is complete. I’m working on a young adult book presently. It’s very different from my other projects, but I’m excited about it.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
For my newest middle grade fantasy book, “The Sacred Artifact,” I tried a new approach to promoting it. I wanted to focus on smaller blogs and sites rather than just the big ones. It’s a lot more work intensive reaching out to dozens of blogs, but I think it really connects my book to the readers who would enjoy it most.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be persistent. Keep reading in your genre and keep writing no matter what. Don’t be afraid to revise for a year, if that’s what it takes.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t give up.

What are you reading now?
Currently am re-reading “The Sun Also Rises.” Feels like a good book to set the tone for the upcoming summer.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Right now most of my time is focused on promoting my middle grade fantasy novel, “The Sacred Artifact,” as it just came out! Once the promotion period dies down a bit, I’ll focus more on my upcoming YA novel. Currently, I’m just working on it in little increments of time, but I’ll be more dedicated to it once my schedule clears up.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Good question! That’s hard. My answer probably changes from day to day. Today, though, I’ll say: “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “The Great Gatsby,” The Grand Meaulnes,” and “East of Eden.”

Awesome Author - Krystal M. Anderson

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live with my husband and four children in southern Utah where I grew up riding horses through the red sand. It gave me an appreciation for the rugged western landscape and a desire to explore every inch of it. We had two boys and two girls (including a set of twins!) within four years, so they are all best friends and keep us running. Being a wife and mother is my greatest joy, and I love hearing their little voices every day.

I write sweet historical romance because, well, history fascinates me – especially the wild stories involving the American westward expansion. I’m new to this world of writing books. I have two published so far, with two more releases planned this year (2019).

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
History fascinates me. In virtually every account I read of the westward expansion and the sacrifice it took to manage it, I think to myself that what these people went through is more fantastic than anything I could dream up. When a particular place or event snags my attention, I wonder what it may have been like to be there, and a book idea is born.
My current work-in-progress is the Heart of a Miner series. It’s focused around one or more characters who mine, though not all of them will be in the Owyhee mountains and Silver City, Idaho. I visited Silver City two summers ago and was completely taken with the history. It’s a ghost town, but there are still 75 structures standing, including the Idaho Hotel which was built in the 1860s. It’s still open to visitors in the summer months, and many of the original features are intact, such as the wallpaper, oil lamps, and wooden floors. Walking those streets, I could imagine the noise, the bustle, the hunger for wealth. I tried to capture that in the series.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Nah. I’m pretty plain-Jane when it comes to that.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many. I really admire Caroline Fyffe, Christopher Paolini, Sarah M. Eden, and Jennifer Moore. There are plenty of others.

What are you working on now?
I’ve committed to participating in my first collaborative writing project, so I’m writing a story to contribute to a 13-author Western box set releasing in July – and I’m so excited about it! I’ve also begun brainstorming for book three in the Heart of a Miner series.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I participate in several facebook groups and try to get to know readers that way.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Not yet… I’m still learning the ropes!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t get hung up on bad reviews.

What are you reading now?
Caroline Fyffe’s Colorado Hearts series. Love it!

What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to be here for the long term, so I’m really just working to put stories to paper and create awareness.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My scriptures, the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini… and Seeking Persephone by Sarah M. Eden.

Awesome Author - Aisha Munir

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Rinum is my pen name, and I just graduated from Hunter College with a degree in biochemistry and a minor in creative writing. I was born in Pakistan and I came to America when I was four years old. It’s been a back and forth journey ever since. I started writing at the age of ten, but I never published anything when I was young. I’ve written two books: The City of Saints and Curing My Venom.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Curing My Venom. It’s based on the five stages of grief. I wrote this book as a form of self-therapy.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write where ever I can. This includes the notes app on my phone, and if I don’t have my phone, I text ideas to myself using someone else’s phone. I’ve written poems in textbooks, on the back of exams, on applications and on napkins.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Every author around me has influenced me. Everyone is unique in their own weird way. I loved the Harry Potter series. The Alchemist, The kite runner, The subtle art of not giving a f***. Books have their own personalities, and sometimes they leave their marks on you.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a few things. I can’t stick to one.

Awesome Author - Woke Money Hero

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a Money Coach but with a twist: I grew up wealthy, watched my parents lose it all, and promised myself when I was 13 that I wouldn’t let money control me. That led me to save over $100,000 three times in my life and retiring by 37. This is my first book although it’s the book I have had in me for years and needed to write for even longer than that. My goal is to help people gain control over their money.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I wrote 27+ Hacks to Financial Freedom after getting laid off from a 9-5 job for the third time and declaring that I was never going back. Although I initially found financial freedom through real estate, I had newfound time on my hands and started exploring the world of “making money online”. Guru after guru promised the moon but after watching 30 of them do their thing, I found an actual winner. The key was knowing the right hacks to win which is the inspiration for the book. There’s 1) the way that everyone does something which gives you average results, 2) the way that you could come out way ahead but potentially risk losing a lot of money, or the third way: the most efficient, most productive way. That’s the foundation of my book and how I teach people to save money.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I just go 🙂 I can sit down and write for 14 hours (plus bathroom and food breaks, of course!)

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Without a doubt, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”. I think we’re all caught up in making our parents proud of us. I even dedicated my book to my Dad. He taught me there’s no such thing as “can’t.” He’s not an author, but I learned a ton from his failures and he should have written a book on what NOT to do. Come to think of it, this would make for a great blog post…

What are you working on now?
I’m working on building and monetizing my website wokemoneyhero.com. It’s the most fun and the most work I’ve ever done. Such is the life of the entrepreneur.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Family & friends 🙂

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I think there’s a book inside of everyone. The hack is to accept that and do with it what you will. The world can learn something from everyone.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Make savings automatic. That right there will help you grow your savings because you aren’t actively thinking about it. It’s when you think you need things that you run into trouble.

What are you reading now?
I search “ways to grow an audience” quite frequently. Medium is my BFF.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Growing my blog. I’ll be writing continuously every couple of days for the next year.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
-Rich Dad, Poor Dad (as a reminder of how to think different)
-Feeling Good (as a reminder of how to think smart)
-The Secret (as a reminder of how to think big)

Awesome Author - Jennifer Diebold

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an extremely spiritual person. I write about spiritual topics. All I ask is that you keep an open mind like myself. This is my first book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Journey to Enlightenment: Transcending Dark Nights of the Soul is the name of my latest book. People I knew along the way told me I should write a book one day. I never thought I actually would but then I saw a webinar from Self-Publishing school I knew then that I want to write. I was in a near death car accident in 2017. Angels saved me. I knew then they saved me so I may complete my purpose in life. Getting the messages in my book out is one way to fulfill my purpose. I enjoy writing a lot.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I love to handwrite on paper before I type because the messages flow so much better that way.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Brene Brown and Stephen King are two of my favorite authors. The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren is a book that fascinates me.

What are you working on now?
For now I am focused on promoting The Journey to Enlightenment: Transcending Dark Nights of the Soul. I will have my next book out in possibly 4 to 5 months or so.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Trust and allow the writing process. If I can do it, so can you. I had moments of negative self-talk which is normal. Just keep plugging away because once the momentum builds up it will not be as difficult.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Trust and allow the writing process.

What are you reading now?
books from other first time authors.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am promoting the ebook to get the messages out. Then I will work on the paperback. In 4 to 5 months or so I will be working on promoting the next spiritual book.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I love self-help and motivational books especially those that are spiritual.

Awesome Author - Judi Roller

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have published two. The first, “The Politics of the Feminist Novel,” won an Outstanding Academic Book Award from “Choice” magazine, a publication university and college libraries use to make their book selections and an award described by my publisher as “prestigious and well-deserved.” My second and recent, “His Name was Brownie: Close Encounters with Dogs, People, and Other Ridiculous Animals,” stems from my lifelong love of and laughter with animals, especially dogs.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“His Name was Brownie: Close Encounters with Dogs, People, and Other Ridiculous Animals.” I’ve always thought of my admission ticket to parties and get-togethers as telling entertaining stories to make people laugh. Usually, they were about animals. At one such party, an English professor friend suddenly looked serious and said, “you should write these stories up.” So fifty years later, I did.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I jot down ideas when they occur to me on pieces of paper and write when the spirit moves me–often I just write pieces of something and then as they get to be numerous, I start organizing them.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
As a child, Albert Payson Terhune and Walter Farley. I always loved animal stories. As an adult, too many to name but Barbara Kingsolver is right up there, along with Alice Walker.

What are you working on now?
Just promoting this book, which was written for fun. The next one will be grimly serious.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far, countdown deals.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read every book you can for years and years. Then read books with advice about writing. Then do it your way.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You should write.

What are you reading now?
“The English Patient.”

What’s next for you as a writer?
A serious novel.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I couldn’t do it. I can watch movies over and over without remembering a thing about them–always new. But I remember every book and everything in it–it just wouldn’t work.

Awesome Author - Kashavera Williams

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Kashavera. I love writing. I have written a few short stories. The biggest complaint I had was the stories were too short. So, I have listened and decided to give them a novel. I have written a book of poetry before. None of which are available right now. The books that’s available is my book of letters. I had a rough childhood and needed to release the pain and anger. I have decided to share it with the world.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Girls: Book 1 Brandon Returns.
This book was the first attempt I had at writing an actual novel. I thought I was going to just do short stories. I never thought I had the attention span to do it. The Girls is my favorite story that I have written because it really steps outside of the Kashavera box. I love writing this book so much that there’s at least two more books coming.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I get this creative energy that comes along and I can’t help but to write. I eat, sleep, dream, and talk writing. I love it. It’s a passion.
Before I started typing, I used to actually write in books. I could write on my bed, the sofa, and on the toilet. I know, ewe. lol Some of my poetry were writing as I was in the john. Sorry! I like to write when it’s dark and relaxed outside. It feels less like I am at work.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jackie Collins (RIP beautiful). I was introduced to her work by a book called Dangerous Kiss. It was the most amazing experience for me. She cussed in her book. It blew me away. My poetry was very lollipop. No cussing. No deep serious in your face things. Everything was nice and sweet. Well…that changed when I read that book. She encouraged me to just be Kashavera. I can be sweet but I am also very real. I no longer hold back. I also read a book by Sista Soulja called The Coldest Winter Ever! I was influenced by the fact that she stayed true to her roots. If I must deliver a message, do it! Thank you ladies.

What are you working on now?
Book III technically I believe it’s Book IV. I am also working on a script for book 1. I have dreams and I want to introduce the world to my Girls in motion.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I thought Facebook and YouTube. I am still learning. I am opened to new ideas.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just be real. Don’t allow anyone to silence you. writing is a freedom and when you allow others to take that freedom from you, you stop being you. Your books stop being real. You won’t even recognize who you are in print and will hate your work. Another advice is, even in the negativity, there could be some helpful information. Have thick skin and don’t be so sensitive. Had it not been for me combing through all of the hate, I would have never tried to write a full novel. They asked for it. Now they got it!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“You are Lisa Simpson”
Alright, probably not what you were looking for but it resonated with me in a way that it made me feel some type of way. I am Kashavera. There’s nothing wrong with that. I love me. All of me. I feel people should feel the same about themselves.

What are you reading now?
My book. lol. Not being stuck up. I am just trying to get this done and out. I am going to read another Jackie Collins’ books. I am also going to purchase the next book in the Winter series. There’s a woman by the name of Chanel Fields. She wrote the book “The power of forgiveness.” I think I am ready for her book now.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Script writing and hopefully connecting with Lions Gate for my film. A girl could dream couldn’t she? 🙂

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My first novel, Power of Forgiveness, Any book by Jackie, and the next Sista Soulja Winter book.

Awesome Author - Sean Robins

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a huge Marvel (plus Game of Thrones, Star Trek AND Star Wars) fan, which shows since my novel is loaded with pop culture references. If you are a sci-fi fan you will enjoy them tremendously. I even went full Deadpool in my first draft and broke the fourth wall multiple times, until my editor told it was distracting and kept taking her out of the moment. Shame. Those fourth-wall breaks were hilarious. Still, I can guarantee a few laugh-out-loud moments. Case in point: The “good” aliens in my novel are a race of pranksters, whose main goal in life is pulling other people’s legs (They have four legs, hence the slight change in the idiom).

I am a university/college level English teacher, and including Canada, I have lived and worked in five different countries. I have met people from all around the world. Plus, my parents are from a different background, and so is my wife. As a result, diversity has become a major theme in my novel. My characters look like the bridge crew from Star Trek. One of my female characters even impersonated Uhura once, albeit posthumously.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Crimson Deathbringer.

This is how it all started: I have got purely obsessional OCD. What this means is a thought enters my mind—usually something negative—and doesn’t leave. I end up having to think about it 5000 times a day, and once this starts, my life is ruined for a week, two weeks, a month, or six months. I’d tried a lot of different ways to get rid of this problem: therapy, medication, meditation… Nothing ever worked, until I read an article that said the people who had this problem had an overly active imagination, and it would help if they channeled it into something productive, like writing.
I’d always wanted to be a writer. This is literally a childhood dream, one of those you give up when you grow up. I had the story of The Crimson Deathbringer in my mind for years (even started writing it and stopped a few times). When I read that article, I was going through a tough time in my marriage (fighting with your wife is no fun, even for sane people), and my mind had gone into its life-destroying over-drive, so I told myself, “Well, you’ve tried everything else, let’s give this a shot.”
And then a miracle happened.
My mind put the same energy it used to put into producing BS and making my life miserable into coming up with stories. Ideas would come to me fast and furious, and I had to stop whatever I was doing several times a day to write them down. I’ve been OCD-free since then (I know, I sound like a recovering alcoholic).

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I think about what I am writing 24/7, with ideas coming to me from all directions. Is that unusual?:)

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite author is Jim Butcher (The Dresden Files), which is probably how I ended up writing in a first-person POV with the same light-hearted, funny tone as he does. The fact that my MC’s name is Jim is purely coincidental though.

What are you working on now?
My second novel, which is about a nerdy scientist and a sexy female mercenary who use a time machine to defeat an alien invasion.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?

Do you have any advice for new authors?
With only one published novel, I am pretty new myself, so no.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It’s not exactly advice: It’s a line from Galaxy Quest: “Never give up; never surrender.” I got some 25 rejections until I found a publisher who accepted my first book.

What are you reading now?
Persepolis Rising by James S. A. Corey.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing my second novel:)

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Any three or four books from The Dresden Files series.

Awesome Author - Violet Pennington

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been a writer ever since I was a kid and always dreamed of being a published author. As a kid, I imagined my days as an adult would be spent sitting a desk in front of a pretty window writing books. Life didn’t quite turn out that way but I’m finally getting around too fulfilling the author part and it feels pretty good!

So far I’ve written two books and I’m actively working on a third.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is ‘Dickhead: Stupid Things Men do with their ‘Little Heads’.

This was a fun book to write but also involved quite a bit of research. As I say in the book, it’s based on something I often say to my husband. Every time I read about another guy who is paying millions to leave his wife for a ‘hot young thing’ or who is forced to resign over some sexual scandal, I say to my husband, there’s another guy who was thinking with his ‘Little Head’.

As I was researching for the book, I found so many great (and sometimes disturbing) stories and it was a difficult task deciding what to include in the book.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Hmm…let’s see. I’m very shy about my writing so very few people get to see my work before it’s published. My husband is actually my favorite editor.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a big fan of the classics – Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte are my favorites. I suspect they would both blush at my books!

I also love a good historical romance, my favorite being an oldie, ‘Enchanted’ by Elizabeth Lowell.

What are you working on now?
It’s a secret! But it will be something that goes well with my ‘Dickhead…’ title. I’ve finished the bulk of my research and now moving on to writing, cover design, an exciting title, etc.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m a complete newbie when it comes to book marketing! Once I figure it out I’d be happy to let people know what I’ve learned.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read, read, read, specifically about what other authors have experienced and how they’ve promoted their books. And know that if you’re self publishing, writing the book is practically the easy part!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I recently heard someone say that there is nothing new to be said, only the way it’s being said. So if you have an idea for a book, just write it. Maybe it will be a bestseller and maybe it won’t. But you won’t be wondering ‘what if’ for the rest of your life.

What are you reading now?
I’d like to say I’m reading some great new novel but in truth, all I have time to read right now are websites on how to be a successful author. I’ve got a lot of reading to do!

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working on my third book and hoping to have it published in the next few weeks. After that I have some other books in a completely different genre that I’d like to start working on.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
…because the characters are like old friends after all the times I’ve read it. And Elizabeth is still a strong heroine!
2. How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life by Scott Adams
… because he’s both funny AND wise. Failure is just a learning opportunity.
3. Gone With the Wind by by Margaret Mitchell
… because Scarlet was a survivor.
4. The Bible

Awesome Author - RJ Leahy

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Yes, I write novels, but I hate being pigeon-holed into any specific genre, so I’m a multi-genre author. My first book, the science fiction novel Tigra, was followed by its sequel, Tigra II: for the Sins of Rothra Orr. It is, in a general sense, a space opera, though the phrase has never set right with me. It is also an alien romance story, though again, it is not a romance novel per-se.

Wanting to stretch my writing wings, I then wrote the humorous mystery novel, Fat Chance, about a New York private eye who is forced to help solve a missing persons case in rural new Mexico. This is a light, breezy read, something to take to the beach and hopefully make you laugh loud enough to disturb those near you.

Diving back into science fiction, I next tackled a dark, dystopian, tale of the the last city on Earth, a city on the edge of ruin, being torn apart by ancient, ethnic hatreds. Angel of the City is told from the viewpoint of a brain-damaged thief, hired to rescue a political prisoner from an authoritarian police state.

My latest novel, Neverworld: The Other Side of the Map, again changes genre. It is a middle grade/ young fantasy adult novel of a girl searching for the mother who abandoned her at birth. Her search takes her to a place of myth and legend, of pirates and vampires and ogres. The sequel is almost finished.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
While I try to keep a regular schedule of writing, I often find myself writing at odd hours, often waking up in the middle of the night to scribble a few lines on the notepad I keep at my bedside. My wife’s patience and understanding, are legendary.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The list is to long.

What are you working on now?
Finishing up the sequel to Neverworld, after which I’ll begin the follow-up novel to Fat Chance, tentatively titled, White on Rice.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Nothing beats word of mouth. Short of that, I try to to the title names out there as much as possible. The usual social media as well as Amazon Ads.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
1). Read
2). Write daily.
3). Take the time to learn your craft as you would any other.
4). Read Stephen King’s, On Writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
When you find yourself in a room full of intelligent, accomplished people, listen. Do that and before long, you’ll be the one talking.

What are you reading now?
Killing Commendatore, by Haruki Murakami

What’s next for you as a writer?
Just to keep writing.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1). The collected works of William Shakespeare
2). Don Quixote
3). The Idiot’s Guide to Surviving on a Desert Island.

Awesome Author - Adam S. Barnett

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written five novels… you’ll be relieved to know the first four, which were terrible, have been eradicated from the face of the Earth.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My current novel is “The Judas Goat.” I was in law school and was surprised at how arbitrary self-defense laws are. With the current wave of “stand your ground” cases, I thought it would be interesting to come up with the most sympathetic scenario where a person could take the life of another, yet still find themselves prosecuted for murder. I also wanted to put a legal thriller out there that gave more of a “behind the scenes” feel to it by getting into the heads of the many, many players involved in a major legal proceeding.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t obey any of the recommended methods. I don’t plot things out in advance, I don’t write when I don’t feel like it, etc.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Elmore Leonard was the author who wasn’t afraid to let every character be smart in his or her own right. I follow that religiously. There isn’t a limited amount of “smart” going around.

What are you working on now?
Another novel! I’ve got the writing bug!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Beats the heck out of me. There are lots of services out there, but I’ve yet to figure out which ones really work.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t be afraid to write just because you’re afraid you’ll fail. Don’t write with being successful as your only goal.
Write what you love and you can’t lose.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I wish I was better at taking advice, but I tend to prefer learning things the hard way.

What are you reading now?
I love biographies and memoirs, especially those written by people who failed or people who succeeded then failed spectacularly. I tend to learn more from those. People who win at life are dreadfully dull.

What’s next for you as a writer?
When I finished, “The Judas Goat,” I thought I wouldn’t write any more novels. Yet, here I am working on the next one. I never know what I’ll feel compelled to do next.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Shut Up and Give Me the Mic by Dee Snider
A Lions Tale: Around the World in Spandex by Chris Jericho
I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution by Craig Sparks

Awesome Author - A.C. Utter

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve completed one novel, and I’m currently about halfway through the second. However, there are a ton of ideas bouncing around in my brain. So much to write, so little time!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
When She Sleeps Part I. I am currently writing Part II. It began as a short story about lucid dreaming when I was young. It wrote itself into a novel.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really, I often times have a dog in my lap, but that’s pretty normal.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Wow, so many. I’ll only name a few; Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and JK Rowling are my top three. My favorite book is It by Stephen King.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently writing Part II, the sequel to my first book. I’m also trying to decide if there will be a Part III or if I can get everything into the second book.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still learning how to promote my books. I use Facebook a lot at the moment.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m still new, so I don’t know that I have much advice besides to just go for it. Now that you can upload your book to the internet, you don’t need a fancy agent. Just go for it, see what happens.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You’ll never know until you try.

What are you reading now?
Mr Mercedes by Stephen King. So far it’s SO good!

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finish Part II, maybe finish my horror poetry compilation. I’m just really hoping people like what I write.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
It and the Harry Potter books all taped together into one book, ha.

Awesome Author - Hannah Goebel

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hannah Goebel lives in Owensboro, KY with her husband and 3, always hungry, children. She 1st heard the story of Dougie as a college student at the University of Kentucky where she earned her BA in English Education. Hannah loves Jesus, volunteering at her children’s school, eating, serving at church, laughing, and running with her friends.

This is her 1st children’s book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Yes ‘Dougie’” there really is an elephant in the yard! First-time author/illustrator Hannah Goebel has adapted the story for a children’s book nearly 65 years after it took place. The Owensboro Kentucky native has written a remarkable feel-good story which just happens to be true. Well sort of. There’s an Elephant in the Yard is based on a 1954 Mills Brothers Circus elephant who was found by a young boy (Dougie) in the backyard.
“I never set out to become an author or illustrator,” says Goebel who first heard the story from her college roommate. “I knew it was an incredible story and needed to be shared with a larger audience.”

Doug “Dougie” Wetzel (who is also a long-time Owensboro resident) is an all-American boy who truly met a live elephant when he went outside to play in 1954. Dougie went inside to tell his mother, Lavon. Thinking her son simply had an overactive imagination, she responded that she should go outside and play with it. The elephant had, in fact, escape from the Mills Brothers Circus and ended up in Dougie’s yard.

“I think every mom can relate to Dougie’s mother,” said Goebel, whose motivation to share the story comes partly from seeing how warmly received it was by her own children. “I love their imaginations and watching them grow as people.”

It’s the “growth” part that inspired the rest of Goebel’s story. “Heppie” the elephant is lost and hungry, and little Dougie takes it upon himself to feed and return him to the circus.

“The theme of the book is that we have a responsibility to help those in need in ‘our own backyard’ by using resources at our disposal and throughout our community. Charity, generosity, and kindness need to be extended to everyone—even those very different from us.”

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Stories often start on a scrap of paper from her purse or from the back of a napkin which has ideas jotted down.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Sick Day for Amos McGee
Finding Winnie
Sleep like a Tiger
Rosie Revere Engineer
Charlotte’s Web

What are you working on now?
There is a 2nd book coming that is almost finished – it’s yet to be title. It follows the unfailing love of a horse and the horse’s owner, a girl named Bennett.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Since my book was released just a few weeks ago, I have no idea!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep plugging away and enjoy the ride.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You will never regret helping too much.

What’s next for you as a writer?
To continue to write children’s books and to read the manuscripts of other aspiring authors.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
To Kill a Mockingbird (the 1st “grown-up” novel I fell in love with in 6th grade)
Pillars of the Earth
Bible
Jane Eyre

Awesome Author - Zita Harrison

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an avid fan of Gothic literature! As a child I fanatically read ghost stories, and in high school fell in love with Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights” and Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre”, a love that continued into adulthood. I find the darker side of humans fascinating. It’s an integral part of who we are, a product of what life has thrown at us, and is responsible for much of our behavior and many of our choices. And it’s infinitely more interesting than the average, “normal” side of things, whatever that is! 🙂 My writing philosophy follows Pablo Picasso’s words, “A work of art must make a man react, feel strongly, start creating too, if only in his imagination. He must be seized by the throat and shaken up; he has to be made aware of the world he’s living in and for that he must first be jolted out of it.” I have written two books so far and am currently working on my third.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Owl Manor – the Dawning”, a Gothic horror/romance and part of a trilogy. As I said before, I am an avid fan of Gothic literature, and am inspired by books I have read, as well as movies I have seen in the genre.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I try to stick to a schedule, but as everyone knows, the ideas don’t follow any schedule! So I find myself scrounging for a napkin and pen in a restaurant to write down ideas!!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
From the classics, Gothic literature writers such as the Bronte sisters, Edgar Allan Poe, Daphne du Maurier. From more current authors, I love Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Sarah Dunant, Kate Morton. It’s not just what they write, it’s the way they write. It’s beautifully sculpted writing, like poetry. The writing itself, in addition to the story, is moving.

What are you working on now?
“Owl Manor – the Dawning” is part of a Gothic horror/romance trilogy, and I am currently working on the next book in the series, “Owl Manor – Abigail.”

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I find scrolling for book promotions on the internet turns up some very helpful and lucrative sites. Amazon ads also help. Other than that, I have my own author website and blog, which I have been neglecting lately because I’m trying to get my current novel going. It’s hard to find time to juggle everything!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I firmly believe we need to write what we enjoy, what we have fun writing, not what others might expect us to write. That way it will resonate and people will enjoy reading it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I ever got was to plan out every chapter before beginning the actual writing. That way you have your story goal and character arcs in mind when you begin writing and it’s easier to stay on track. After that it’s a matter of filling in the “meat” – descriptions, dialog, etc.

What are you reading now?
Right now I’m reading “Craven Manor”, also a Gothic novel, by Darcy Coates. It’s the first book I’ve read by her and I’m really enjoying it!

What’s next for you as a writer?
Keep writing and hope to find the people who enjoy what I write!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
All the books by Daphne du Maurier I haven’t read yet!
