Awesome Author - Holly Hazen

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Migraine Management: How to Reduce Anxiety, Manage Pain and Prevent Attacks is my first book. I have been doing research and writing articles about migraines on my website since 2009. I’ve had them myself for over twenty years. Very chronic, very severe and painful for 20 days each month. I’d never had a month off until recently.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Migraine Management: How to Reduce Anxiety, Manage Pain and Prevent Attacks is the name of my latest book. It was inspired by an overwhelming desire to help more migraine sufferers, rather than one at a time as in my counselling practice. So I surveyed my online followers about what they most wanted help with. Pain management and stress management were the top two. So I wrote the migraine pain management course and this ebook. It wasn’t really as planned out as that, but it did all eventuate.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I binge write!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Arthur C. Clarke, Ayn Rand, Eckhart Tolle, Louise Hay, Richard Gerber, Marianne Williamson. Just to name a few.

What are you working on now?
Marketing and promoting my ebook and course. Now that’s a whole new world!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far …. awesomegang! I’m just beginning, so I’ll have to keep you posted.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t wait too long to write your book. It’s given me more joy than anything I’ve done so far.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Hmmm…. that’s a big question. I can tell you the best question I was ever asked. It was by my boyfriend (now husband) when I was in complete anguish over taking yet another tablet for my migraine. Do you want to hear it?

It was “is it ever just a headache?”

I had to reply, “no” and ever since then, I just take my abortives (with no pressure or stress). I think that saved me 6 years of needless suffering. Maybe more!

What are you reading now?
Ok, so maybe I need to find a more fun or romantic book – but right now I am reading Trauma and Recovery by Judith Lewis Herman.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m looking into migraines causing PTSD and what therapies might help that. And I’d love to do something more positive like a lovely inspiring migraine journal.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
#1 Practicing the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
And then maybe: Illuminata by Marianne Williamson, A Practical Guide to Vibrational Medicine by Richard Gerber, M.D. and Chicken Soup for the Woman’s Soul by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, et al.

Awesome Author - Elaine Stock

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY for the first half of my childhood then in upstate New York for the second half, I “get” both city and rural living. Not one to accept No easily, when my husband and I were newly married, in need of a home as well as a place for his piano restoration business, and the bank said No to approving a mortgage, we bought, for cash, a dilapidated 19th century railroad station and fixed it up ourselves. It’s now home and business. I also ignored No through the years of trying to become a published author, eventually landing an agent and a publishing contract with a traditional publisher.

Prior to my debut novel Always With You launched in January of 2016, my award-winning short story In His Own Time was published in a short-story anthology. Another short-story, The Forever Christmas Gift, was published in the Kindle-bestselling anthology Christmas Treasures: A Collection of Christmas Short Stories. My romance novella, And You Came Along, will be released in November of 2017. Meanwhile, I await word from my agent on 2 more manuscripts.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Always With You made its debut appearance during Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. Although this wasn’t an intentional launch date upon my part, I believe the timing was perfect.

When I had attended a RWA writer’s workshop in Saratoga, NY (home to the famous racehorse track) attendees were given racehorse names. We were asked to come up with a story premise based upon the horse’s name. My horse was named Don’t-Tell-Isabelle. Immediately I wanted to know what Isabelle wasn’t supposed to know and why. This story, which I titled Don’t Tell Isabelle, brewed in my thoughts for a while.

Then, 9-11 struck. It shook me up, as well as many. In trying to understand the horrors and craziness of this world, and in a narrower field—of family or relationships—I had a tough time separating faith from my writing. Don’t Tell Isabelle shaped into a story of faith encroached and manipulated by the evil of hatred. It sold to Elk Lake Publishing and became Always With You.

It’s a story about falling in love with the right–as well as the wrong–person. And, what happens when you discover your husband is hiding a huge secret from you: he’s a white supremacist. Will good or evil succeed?

I’ve just been blessed that Alway With You has won the 2017 Best Book of the Year Christian Small Publisher Association Award.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
For better or worse, I am a serious seat-of-the-pants writer. If I attempt an outline, it ruins the fun of discovering my story world and characters. However, I am becoming more adept at managing writing a working-synopsis after I SOP plunge into the first few chapters of a new story.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve admired many authors and read many different genres. Jodi Picoult, Angela Hunt, Linda Nichols, Susan Monk Kidd, and Harlan Coben have opened my eyes about storytelling.

What are you working on now?
Romance and family drama are intriguing and fun genres for me to dwell in. I’m completing my romance novella And You Came Along (out this November).

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
It’s a mix. I’m a Twitter (@ElaineStock) addict and have found a great network of fellow authors and readers who help me, and I help them. Also, I’m discovering Twitter author promotion services, like Awesomegang.com and AskDavid. I do have a website and a very active blog (Everyone’s Story) plus both a Facebook Author page and personal page. I’m also building my Author Newsletter (http://www.elainestock.com/contact/). And you can find my browsing the book aisles on Goodreads.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m sure you’ve already heard “Don’t give up” often, and for a good reason: publishing, whether traditionally or independently, is not for the faint of heart. To add to this advice: don’t sink so low and drop out of the race upon learning of all the discouraging publishing news out there. Like life, the publishing world is tricky and scary. Just get back into your place behind the keyboard and start typing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t give up!

What are you reading now?
Broken Angels by Gemma Liviero and Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to finish research on a time-slip novel. This is a loosely-based novel on my paternal family history, fused with romance and family mystery.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, The Shack by William P. Young, and Havah by Tosca Lee. All three encourage me in my faith of a God who loves me for who I am.

Awesome Author - Samantha Gollakner

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was picked up by a Publisher when I was 18, I am currently 21. I was originally from West Allis, Wisconsin; now living in Fort Worth, Texas. I have three books out.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The first novel of my new Sci-Fi series, ‘Land of ARLENM’
I felt like the world needed something new and never before done in the science fiction world. I wanted to write the book, I always dreamed of seeing on the shelves, myself.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well, I do not write in the nude or anything along those lines. I am not sure if this is unusual, but I can write for 24 hour periods straight with out getting writers block; very frequently. Other than than, not much would come to mind.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Rod Sterling.
His ideas, the things that must have traveled through his head amaze me. I like writers who jump out of the every day box and takes risks that not everyone dares to take.

What are you working on now?
The second novel of my Sci-Fi series, ‘Land of ARLENM’

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Twitter has to be one of my favorites for online.
My all time favorite method is in person marketing; granted you might not be able to reach as many people as with the Internet, but I feel like the personal connection is something people cannot forget.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Do not give up, failure is something that happens to every writer. You have to have the determination to do whatever it takes to grasp your dreams. Leave your comfort zone and give it 120% all the time, every day. We all have the same 24 hours; use yours wisely and have a lot of patients.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You know you are on the right track when sleep becomes an inconvenience.

What are you reading now?
Fifty shades of Grey.
Never got around to reading it when it was such a hot topic. Finally, have a little time of slack.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a goal of writing every single genre there is, so far I have three down; many more to go.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The haunting of Sunshine Girl
The Rules
Bad girls don’t die

Awesome Author - AJ Eversley

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am the author of the Watcher Series, a young adult Scifi Dystopian series. Sawyer Russo has sworn to protect humanity, and as a Watcher she’s done just that. But the Bots and Carbons that took her city are evolving, and they start picking the Watchers off one by one. One last rescue mission will change everything. When someone betrays them, the line between friend and foe is no longer easily drawn. Sawyer made a vow, and she will fulfill it, even if it means ending the person who deceived them, no matter who it might be. It all comes down to one choice… Who can she save? And who does she have to let go?
The first book in the series, WATCHER, was released on March 13, 2017 and is now available through Amazon. I also have 2 FREE Novellas, KENZIE is released May 23, 2017 and MAX is released June 20, 2017. Both are free and will take you into the world of Watcher during the 10 years before book 1 picks up. Both can be read before or after book 1 without spoiling anything!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Watcher is the name of the latest book, and it’s loosely inspired by terminator meets assassins creed. I love Scifi movies as well as kick butt assassins, so I took the two ideas and put the together.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to be a “pantser”, meaning I don’t usually plot out where the book is going, I just let the characters dictate what happens. I have a loose idea of where I think it may go, but often find my self surprised with what happens in my own books!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Sarah J. Maas is the queen! I love all her series, every word from every book! She’s been a huge inspiration in creating strong female characters and dashing yet complex male characters.
Divergent and Hunger Games are old favourites as well that I often get comparisons with book series.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on Book 2 of the Watcher Series, CARBON set to be released September 2017

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook is a wealth of knowledge. I lean heavily on the guidance of other authors who have done this already! I am apart of Facebook groups who share newsletter swaps, giveaway promos and ideas that worked for them.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write! Don’t worry about the critics, even your own internal critic, and just write. If you love what your doing no body can take that away from you!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t settle for good, strive for great.

What are you reading now?
I am of course reading SJM – A Court of Wings and Ruins

What’s next for you as a writer?
Just keep learning and pursuing my dreams

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A Court of Thorn and Roses series. Or Harry Potter but that’s more than 3-4 books and I’d hate to have to choose which ones to leave behind!

Awesome Author - Chris Phipps

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve always loved writing, but didn’t have time to get deep into it until after I retired. Now, I can do little else. I’ve lost much of my vision to glaucoma, so I can’t drive, travel, work in my garden, or even clean house (darn!) But I can bump up the fonts on my computer and Kindle, so writing and reading are great outlets for me.

I started with short stories. The Saturday Evening Post published one of them, “Grandpa and Me,” in its 2015 online anthology of best short stories. Despite that, I wanted to write what I most love to read: mystery stories. My first book in my series is “Love, Murder, and a Good Bottle of Wine.” The second book is “Snowbound.” I’m presently working on the third book, as yet untitled. Sometimes the title doesn’t come to me until late in the book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The last book I published is Snowbound, and if I tell you what inspired it, I may give away the ending. Suffice it to say, I picked up an idea from the Sunday comics, said “hmmm. I wonder if…” and I was off!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if they’re unusual. I usually have the glimmering of an idea, and instead of doing it properly by sitting down and plotting it out, I just start writing. Invariably, I have to stop somewhere and at least do an outline. But I like my method because my characters come up with all kinds of little surprises I hadn’t expected, often leading the book into something better than what I had envisioned.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh, my! There are so many! I don’t know if they’ve influenced me, in that I doubt I can ever write like they do, but I’ve read everything by David Baldacci, Michael Connelly, Ian Rankin, Greg Isles, Lee Child, C.J. Box, and several others. I’ve also read many outside the mystery genre. If they have influenced me at all, it’s pushed me to learn as much as I can about the writing craft and strive to write the best book I can.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on the third book in my series, but I also have a few chapters finished of the fourth book. I also keep meaning to get back to revising the first book I ever wrote and never published: a family sage of my own childhood. I wrote it for family, but orders kept coming in, along with encouragement to publish it commercially. I keep meaning to get back to it, but never quite seem to get to it.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m very, very new at promotion, so I don’t know yet. Until recently, I just wrote, putting off book promotion, and I still don’t pay enough attention to it.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Learn your craft. I don’t mean you have to get a degree. But take some classes, buy some good writing books, find good online sites and blogs on writing. A good critique group is essential. And the learning never stops. At least, it hasn’t for me. I’m, always finding a way to use description better, make better use of dialogue, etc.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There’s so much of it. Elmore Leonard’s “leave out the parts nobody reads,” being one that comes to mind. But probably the simple old standard, BIC (keep butt in chair).

What are you reading now?
I just finished “In Farleigh Field,” and got little else done until I finished. I don’t read as much as I used to, or even as much as I should, because, if I find a really good book, I can’t put it down until I finish. Before that I read “Shadows of the Wind,” and “The Halo Effect,” but didn’t find myself as engrossed in them. Learning to write has a downside; you never enjoy reading quite so much, because you see all the flaws, and that detracts from the story. I didn’t have that distraction in “In Farleigh Field.”

What’s next for you as a writer?
The book I’m working on, then the next.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That’s a hard one. Irving Stone’s “The Agony and the Ecstasy” comes to mind because I’ve read it so many time. But that may be because I re-read it every time I thought I was going to Italy, and I wanted to refresh my memory about Michelangelo and his work. Other than that, probably something like the three first Games of Thrones books because they’re so big and complex, I wouldn’t get so bored re-reading the same material over and over again. I’d do better to take pens and se4veral reams of paper because it would take much longer to writ my own.

Awesome Author - Kevin McAllion

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a journalist from Scotland and Moristoun is my debut novel. I’ve spent most of my life working as a copy editor so I decided to emerge from the shadows and write something myself for a change

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Moristoun is an island that Scottish people are sent to in the afterlife when they have taken their own lives. I was inspired by a friend who died by suicide not long after I had started writing the book. It seemed so unfair that her adventure would end in her mid-30s so I wanted to explore might be happening to her, and others who cut short their lives, in the next realm.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. But the only way I could discipline myself to write the book was to wake up at 7am every morning and write for at least one hour every day. I found that very productive and wish I could now get back to the same regime. But I now have a four-year-old daughter so free time is very much a more precious commodity.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Reading The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass was a real eye-opener. It showed me a whole new way of writing and was such a triumph of imagination. I was also influenced by an anthology of modern Scottish writing that I bought in a shop. It showed me that there was a market for stories set in Scotland and I thought: ‘If these guys can do then why not me?’

What are you working on now?
I’ve started three different books since finishing Moristoun only to end up hitting brick walls with all three due to my sloth. One is about an Elvis impersonator getting revenge on an internet troll, the other is about a road trip in Thailand (where I lived for 18 months) and the most recent one is about someone turning up in a small Scottish town and proclaiming himself the Second Coming.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I haven’t used that many. I’m a member of the Books Go Social site on Facebook and that has been good for meeting fellow authors and promoting each other’s work.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Try to write something original. There’s no point just aping your favourite writers. Most of all, just write to entertain yourself. If your own work makes you happy and you enjoy reading it, then that’s half the battle.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just enjoy this golden time you will soon cling desperately to the memory of – Homer Simpson

What are you reading now?
I’m reading the fictional biography of Alan Partridge, written by Steve Coogan, Armando Iannucci and Co. Very, very funny

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m hoping to shake off my sloth and get back to disciplined writing, helping me to make more progress with the books I have started but abandoned

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass
The Case of Comrade Tulayev by Victor Serge
The Van by Roddy Doyle
Football Against The Enemy by Simon Kuper

Awesome Author - Nic Schuck

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I run a historic tour company in Pensacola, Florida called Emerald Coast Tours. I’ve written two books. My first one,Native Moments, was published by Waldorf Publishing in September 2016 and my second one, Panhandlers, will be published by the same company in late 2017.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest and only book published is Native Moments. It is a coming of age story set in Costa Rica. It was inspired by a surf trip I took when I was 20 years old. While the story is a work of fiction, it is inspired some true events.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t have any unusual writing habits. I write when I can. I try to write everyday, but I’m not disciplined to have a set time to write.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many that it’s impossible to list here, but I’ll try. The five biggest influences would probably be Ernest Hemingway, Cormac McCarthy, Harry Crews, Larry Brown and Barry Hannah. But my writing isn’t just inspired by writers. Some of my biggest influences are probably songwriters and stand-up comedians. People like Todd Snider, Robert Earl Keen, Kris Kristofferson, Bill Hicks, Greg Giraldo, Mitch Hedberg. I could go on.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the edits for upcoming novel, Panhandlers, but I’m also working on writing my third book which will be a Western.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Writing a blog and sharing it on facebook seems to help. I really like instagram, too. But nothing compares to having physical copies handy and setting up book signings at local book stores. The face to face interaction with potential readers seems to translate into more sales. I really enjoy making a real connection with my readers.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t stop. Even when you get discouraged and you think your writing is shit, just keep writing. Keep writing, keep submitting, keep reading and you will continue to get better. At least, I hope that’s how it works.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’ll paraphrase a Ray Bradbury piece of advice. He said, Pick a room in your house and start hanging up the rejection slips on the walls and before you are able to cover all four walls, someone will have said yes. I’m sure he worded it much better, but it’s a similar concept.

What are you reading now?
The Stories of Breece D’J Pancake.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Keep writing. Finish one novel and begin the next.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Sun Also Rises, Suttree, Blood Meridian, Deep Blue Goodbye, One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Awesome Author - LAURIE HANAN

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in Hawaii and love everything about island living.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Rainbow Connection is a takeoff from my Louise Golden mystery series. By the fourth book, the little girl in the series, Emmeline, has grown into a surly teenager who finds herself in a heap of trouble. It was time for me to dig deeper into Emmeline’s character and for readers to see the world through her eyes.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know how unusual it is, but I like to write very early morning when the world is quiet and still.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Some of my favorites are Sue Grafton and Janet Evanovich.

What are you working on now?
I’m working in another spinoff from my series, a cozy murder mystery that takes place in a Senior Living complex.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Twitter seems to generate the most sales.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get your story on paper, then worry about fixing it. Allow yourself to write badly, then edit. Beause you can’t edit a blank page.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Set a goal so big that you can’t achieve it until you grow into the person who can.”

What are you reading now?
Skip Langdon Mysteries: volumes 2-9, by Julie Smith

What’s next for you as a writer?
I would like to keep expanding my Louise Golden mystery series, as well as develop my two spin-offs into series.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, and inspirational books by Caroline Myss, Echkart Tolle, and Deepak Chopra. Because in that situation I think I’d need all the inspiration I could get.

Awesome Author - Lianna Spurrier

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I just finished my sophomore year of college studying convergent media – my practical plan in life is to go into graphic/web design, although my real dream has always been to be an author. I’ve finished an illustrated collection of short stories and a novel at the moment, and am currently working on another novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My novel is called “Life in Polaroids” and was basically written on a whim. I had a lot of free time last fall semester, and a couple friends of mine invited me to do NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month. I’d barely written in a few years as school got busier, but I decided I finally had time and went ahead with it. I found a picture on Pinterest that ultimately inspired the entire book of a girl with bright blue hair and a chunky cross around her neck. I spent all of November writing, and I’m sure driving my roommates up a wall with rants and questions and ramblings about Coney Island and lesbian bars.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not particularly. I tend to make a playlist on YouTube of music for each book and always have that playing while I write, but that’s about it.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Growing up, I always loved Peg Kehret, but my favorite book that I’ve read recently is “The Martian.” In fact, that book has had a very big influence on my current project, but I can’t connect Life in Polaroids to another book or author in particular.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a science fiction novel that’s a much larger project than Life in Polaroids. In short, a group of scientists accidentally created what turns out to be a superhuman and the world finds out. It’s turning out to require a lot more research and such than I expected. In fact, I gave up for a couple weeks because I didn’t think it was possible for the story to work thanks to US laws, but I eventually figured a way around it. It’s been a struggle.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t know yet; I’m very much a new author, and am just now exploring my options, so I don’t know yet what will work and what won’t.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I feel a bit unqualified to answer this, given that I’m a new author myself, but essentially: Figure it out. Want to self-publish your book? Figure out how to get it on Amazon. Figure out how to format it for a paperback and ebook. Figure out how to design a cover. Figure out how to promote it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I read an article somewhere about an author who self-published 20 or so books on Amazon before one took off and became very popular which led him to great success. Something near the end of the article said that his advice was for new authors to just keep writing. Keep releasing books, even when no one’s reading them, because you might just hit the next bestseller.

What are you reading now?
“Red Mars.” I competed in an international science fair in 2013 with a project about Mars, and loved “The Martian,” so I have a bit of a bias toward Mars-based science fiction.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m currently trying to figure out how to effectively market “Life in Polaroids,” and push my way through a first draft of my science fiction novel. Those are the two big things.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Let’s see… “The Island,” “My Side of the Mountain,” and “The Martian.” All three of them have to do with survival (granted, one’s on a different planet, but close enough, right?) and I’d be rather useless in keeping myself alive. I’d basically be using them as how-to guides, but I do enjoy all of the books in their own right.
