Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a Storyteller of fictional drama mystery suspense thrillers. I have written so far three (3) novels. I came from a large family. I have six (6) sisters three (3) brothers, and Daddy died when I was five months on this planet called Earth. Mother was left with ten (10) children to care for, and we were what they called in those days, Dirt Poor, but to the goodwill of others, neighbors, family, and friends we all survived quite well. I suffered Tuberculosis at age six, hospitalized four months. Back then it was like being in a haunted hospital. Children of all ages were screaming for their mommies and daddies. I discovered why that was when they came for me, strapped me down to feed tubes through my nasal passage, down my esophagus into my lungs to draw out what fluid and mucus would drown me eventually. At age nine I woke paralyzed with polio and hospitalized having to have a spinal cord injection, which may cripple me for life or perhaps not. Thank goodness the latter was my fate. Ups and downs followed me around. I was somewhat of a nomad in my younger years, late teens through my twenties. And I met a lot of people in my travels. I experienced a lot of strange behavioral patterns in myself and others. I have been to the dark side. Astro traveling is real. One time, unintentionally, it happened. It was very strange and scary. An experience I do not care to experience again. I have seen strange things. Yes, ghosts, apparitions, spirits, angels, devils, whatever they were, lasted perhaps moments in time but sticks with you forever. I tell tall tales, and no, none of the above is a tall tale, but fact, truth and simple, and who believes, believes, who does not, well, does not. I am now entering the third act play in my existence. I hope it will prove to be worth all I have thus far experienced as a human born of this realm, on this round surface which hangs out in the Universe mysteriously. My goal is and has always been to get my stories into the film industry, to give my characters life through humans acting out as my characters in what we perceive; real life.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Hellen Back. The inspiration comes from a place I have no thought. An idea comes from many aspects of all things, perhaps a day ago, a month ago, or years. Ideas come and go, but it is when I sit down and begin to tell my story that the characters tell their own tale. I just get lost inside there and hope for the best.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do not know of any.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Well, not an author, but a great director. Mr. Alfred Hitchcock is, was, and always will be to me, one of the greats who developed far beyond his time. King is a most desirable author with a mind all his own. Koontz has a style I like very much. Christie is dark in her thoughts, whipping together characters and plots of well deserving. So many for so many reasons.
What are you working on now?
Getting myself established for one thing. I usually find myself glued to a story during the winter months when my mind is less apt to be filled with sunshine, pools, outdoor barbecues. Winter is solace to me with the cold drafts heightening my mood to a level of better understanding myself.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
All and any I can possibly get promoted within cost.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
write.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To be who you are meant to be and not to let anyone say otherwise.
What are you reading now?
Nothing at the moment.
What’s next for you as a writer?
To tell stories until I cannot tell them anymore.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My three, and most likely my favorite… Dolores Claiborne

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello there.
I was born in Hackney, East London and after my formative school years, I then went on to study, live and work in a number of countries.
For example I lived in Cyprus, Denmark, Portugal and Spain, to name a few countries, and I have also travelled extensively around the world from the Far East to the United States.
My studies led me on to study psychology, philosophy, and the human mind on a deeper level, and as a qualified psychotherapist, I have helped hundreds of people over the years over come any difficulty in their lives.
My background led me on to writing self-help and personal development books so that I could help as many people as possible around the world.
To date I have five published books and my sixth book is now complete, and will be released in 2017.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I have just released my fifth book entitled The Secrets of Connecting and Understanding which is aimed at helping the reader develop more successful relationships in his/her life. The book contains many new ideas, principles and techniques to help the reader develop more meaningful interactions with others whilst at the same time building on levels of empathy and sympathy to create stronger bonds and greater emotional understanding of human behaviour and interaction.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Nothing too extreme really.
I usually make sure I am pretty relaxed when I write and I am fairly disciplined when I write and when I go over ehat I have written…
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Too many to mention really.
Before studying Psychology, I also studied English literature at school and college, so I read many of the classics, and many famous authors as well.
It helps to study literature in greater detail as you develop a greater understanding of writing styles, and the different rhythms writers use in their poetry or fiction / non-fiction books.
What are you working on now?
As mentioned, I have finished book six in my series, and my goal is to write at least ten books in this series…
After writing a manuscript, you need a lot of time to read through it, correct certain things and maybe rewrite some sections. It really is a Labour of love for me though, and I love writing personal development and self-help books.
For me it is a very cathartic process as I have to think from a higher level to write what I do.
I know the readers will love my latest instalment as I have had a lot of positive feedback already!!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
There are many different ways to promote yourself and your books. Most of it is trial and error so you really need to figure out what’s best for you…
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep going no matter what and learn to love what you do.
Constructive criticism is okay, but don’t take things to heart and don’t get discouraged.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t wait…
Life goes by quicker than you realize….
What are you reading now?
I am now reading…
My manuscript for my next book!
This is the hardest part of writing as you aren’t as creative in this process. You have to carefully read through checking for typos and better ways to write everything…
Other than that, I also read many other things for inspiration and knowledge.
Educating yourself is a continual life long process.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I will continue writing no matter what..
It’s important to have… a passion in life, and its important to stay motivated.
I aim to write at least ten books and then I will take it from there.
I also fancy writing other genres so let’s see… time will tell
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring only one book…
It would be about how to escape being stranded on a desert island!

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My love of reading romance fiction goes back to those early years when I was raising a young family. It wasn’t until much later in life I actually took up the pen to write my first historical romance, Wind Warrior . I really don’t fit into one specific niche. Once a story starts to flow, it’s only then I know what genre/sub-genre it will fit under.
I have only one regret, and that is not getting to this point in my career much sooner, rather than later. Life has a way of setting up road blocks, which for me I know now, was supposed to work out that way. Because of those detours, I have become a more passionate and expressive writer, allowing me to create the kind of raw human emotion I want my readers to feel.
It is my hope you walk away with not just an entertaining read, but the importance in knowing, “Without imagination & dreams, we lose the excitement of wonderful possibilities.”
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Pawn for Malice. I was a Legislative Aide for N.Y.S. Senator, Dale Volker, back in the late 70’s early 80’s, who was the sponsor of the Death Penalty Bill. Being in the midst of the legislative process, I came up with an idea and put together a very rough draft. And then, I became pregnant with my son Jason, who was born two months premature. You’d never know it, if you saw him now. Two years, later, his sister Alyssa was born. Life just got crazy being a mom and working full time.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Would you believe, I just sit down and go at it I’ve always been that way. I don’t write out an outline or long summary of what I think the book will be about. I kind of just get this idea in my head, sit down and just let it flow. All of my books have been like that. My Gramma, God rest her soul, told me I was blessed because the words generated straight from my soul, up to my heart, and out through my fingers. I think she was right with 11 books published and more on the way.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Romance … romance … romance. I’m a diehard romantic. I learned much later in life also that my mother’s dad was half Native Indian and from a tribe in New Mexico, which we’re still trying to learn more of. When I discovered, Cassie Edwards and her Savage Series, holy moly!!! I read them all. My love and respect for that culture led me to begin my Iroquois Series, because I originally was born and raised in upstate New York and never found a romance based on tribes of the Iroquois Nation. That’s when, Wind Warrior was born.
What are you working on now?
Right now I’m trying to promote the PreOrder Release Launch for ‘A Pawn for Malice’ ~ It’s a thrilling, passionate, and suspenseful romance that entails, self-discovery, survival and a love that is so strong, it conquers the evil trappings of a criminal mind. I’m offering it at 60% right now on Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and Apple iBooks until Nov. 6th. When it launches on the 7th, it reverts to the full retail price of $4.99.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I literally do everything I possibly can i.e. blog tours, utilize my social media, get the word out via my email list, promotional ads on Facebook, Goodreads, IndTale Magazine and so many other sites that are way too many to note. Exposure is key, but I do believe a lot of it is pure and simple luck.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t ever give up, or let a rejection stifle your desire to become a writer. When I first started mega, mega years ago, no one was open to giving advice. I took a creative writing course at a local community college to learn the formula of writing fiction and it helped immensely.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Stay true to yourself and never allow anyone to snuff out your light.
What are you reading now?
Nothing right now. I’m in the midst of my next project and planning out how to market it, plus, tending to all my social media platforms, I’m exhausted … all in a good way though.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Well, I SO SO WANT to make a best seller’s list just once in my lifetime. To me, that’s the “tell all” sign of success. I’ve written three movie scripts, one of which made it in the Top 5, I’d love to see opted for production. That would be way cool. “If you don’t do, you don’t get,” again, my Gramma use to say. I’ll just keep plugging along and hope for the best.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Geez Louise !! As much as I love, love, love reading romance fiction, being stranded on a desert island isn’t going to be a walk in the park. So, my practical side is telling me I need a book on how to a build shelter, a book on survival skills, and a boxed set of Jude Deveraux’s books.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born on the south side of Chicago but have been living in the Pacific Northwest for over three decades. I’m a huge fan of the natural landscape, which often shows up in my writing. Relationships between people also fascinate me, and the books I read always revolve around human interaction. I’ve published one novel, one collection of short stories, and a variety of essays, articles, and stories.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Women on the Brink is a short story collection. Each story was inspired by real life situations-not necessarily my own, but people I have known or have heard about. There are all sorts of problems, issues, and dilemmas that women of all ages face in real life, but we don’t talk about them. Or, if we do, we aren’t heard. This collection brings some of these truths to light.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I need total solitude when I’m working on my fiction. I used to tell my family not to bother me unless there was vomit, blood, or fire. Nowadays, I have to make my husband promise to be absolutely silent when I’m writing, because his voice carries through the doors and walls in our home and through the hardshell of my skull, too. Sometimes I just have to go away from everything and everyone to get my work done.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The authors who influenced me in my youth were Albert Camus and J.R.R. Tolkien, although I don’t write like either of them. As a writer I devour anything by Tana French, Barbara Kingsolver, Laura Lippman, Toni Morrison, Liane Moriarty, Gloria Naylor, Ann Patchett, Anna Quindlen, Marilynne Robinson, Alice Sebold, Elizabeth Strout, and Anne Tyler. As you can see, they are writers of various genres and styles. They’re also all women.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a novel set in the Yellowstone area. It alternates between present day and a significant historical period. It focuses on relationships among women and the individual’s drive toward authenticity. Landscape plays an important role in this novel, as it does in some of my other work.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still working on that. I do send out a monthly newsletter to my fans and readers in which I talk about writing, reading, and life…everything from grizzly bears to gridlock. From the feedback I’ve received, I think it’s a great way to connect.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the best book you can. Don’t rush it. Enjoy the process and don’t worry about the end result. As cliche as this sounds, it’s absolute truth: the writing life is a journey, not a destination. Think hard about how you define success.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never give up, never surrender.
What are you reading now?
I just finished reading Tana French’s novel The Sacred Place. Next up: The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead and also Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I get my novel finished I’ll have to find a new agent/publisher. I’ll also turn to working on some essays and a nonfiction book about wellness writing.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. Wilderness Survival for Dummies, Cameron M. Smith
2. The Swiss Family Robinson, Johann David Wyss
3. Fear: Essential Wisdom For Getting Through the Storm, Thich Nyat Hanh
4. Good Poems for Hard Times, ed. Garrison Keillor

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
At 25 years old pushing my rusted 1987 Honda accord in morning traffic is when I learned the truth about the past, the future, and the present. I realized I was in that situation because of one thing, the person I had become. With this new found understanding I simply began to work on myself and I noticed success started to come into my life with less effort then it ever had before. Simply by living as if everything was a reflection of my being, and with total responsibility for my own life, I transformed my life on all levels from the physical, to the mental, and most importantly, the spiritual. With this new simple but profound concept, I was able to go from broke to making six figures, from homeless to buying my first home, from depressed to joyful, in a few short years. Although I am proud of my quick successes, I am more excited about what I have learned during the process, I realized that I am a creator. I could create context for my life, and anybody can also create context for their life once they were aware of that ability. I realized that the cause of all things are generated with or without intention by human beings, and that if a human being could take full responsibility for his life he could be the cause to all the results that take place in his life, and create his life with intention.
With this new knowledge I felt compelled to share it. I know that I needed some ammo for this bold idea so I decided to dedicate my life to learning the process of creation. I Define Success as: The achievement of a future ideal. To have a idea and make that idea tangible, sensible, and physical is the process of creation. It seems that what we create is a reflection of our being and our being is controlled by one and one person only, us. The Creator loves us so much he allows us being, he gives us the freedom to be anything we want to be. This is the ultimate form of love because the possibilities of being are infinite, we can be anything, and if creation is the reflection of our being then that would mean that we also can create anything we wish to as well. I can prove this fact not only with analogies, but also scientifically, and I have dedicated my life to teaching, and motivating others to be the cause of their own lives.
My writings include Finish, and The Success Magnet: Cultivate The 5 Values That Attract Success.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called The Success Magnet: Cultivate The 5 Values That Attract Success. At one point in my life I was broke, depressed, and embarrassed, then I had a course of events take place in my life that lead me from being broke to making six figures. I simply learned to take responsibility for my life and from their the universe got on my side to help me succeed.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I like to write in the presence of other people. I find it hard to work alone. I love to be in a coffee shop, or with other writers, or in the middle of a mastermind group.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read the bible daily and I love to read the bible now that I know that it’s not written for everybody to agree with its aspects. I think it was written for each individual to get what they get from it. I also love to read zen books, and Buddhist books. Authors I love are Jim Rohn, Stephen Covey, Brendon Burchard etc. The book that changed my life though was Steven Pressfield, The War of Art. That book empowered me to sit my ass down and write this book I wrote today.
What are you working on now?
I am coaching people one on one, I am also developing a confidence mastery course, and I am campaigning to speak to spread this idea of responsibility and self expression.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I think focusing on the message is key. I set out initially because I want to reach millions of people but I learned that sometimes you have to do it for the one person you can help. I stopped trying to reach the world, and started reaching the one I can help, and the world came to me.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes, don’t take advice. You already know how to achieve your goals, you simply have to get out of your own way and create. Sit down and write, period.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I have ever heard is that reality is what is and anything that explains reality is an abstract concept.
What are you reading now?
Shobogenzo by Master Dogen
What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to write a book that explains what can’t be understood, but only experienced. I want to write a book that generates an experience of the here and now moment.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, The book of survival, My book, and Bucky Fullers book Synergy.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have always been very creative and after studying fashion design in my early twenties, I spent twenty years in the fashion industry as a pattern maker, production manager and designer including having my own womenswear and childrenswear labels. Needing a change, I retrained in jewellery making and created and sold my own line of sterling silver and bronze jewellery. Then I discovered a love of teaching and passed on the many skills in sewing, pattern making and jewellery making I had learned over the years to my students.
Creative writing started as a self-dare to see if I had the chops to write a manuscript. I quickly became obsessed with the craft as much as the art of writing and began taking as many courses as I could, working with a developmental editor and writing every day to improve my skills so that I could express the ideas in my head in a way that people would want to read. I am currently completing a three-year, full-time advanced diploma in applied writing .
When my first manuscript, Peak Hill, was a finalist in the 2016 Romance Writers of New Zealand Pacific Hearts Full manuscript contest, I decided that it was time to publish it. I have one more manuscript completed and currently in editing and another two partially completed.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Peak Hill was my first manuscript and while the first draft took only three months to write, I then spent another year working on it with my developmental editor both to improve the manuscript and my own writing.
In Peak Hill, I wanted to tell the story of a strong female protagonist overcoming personal tragedy, growing and finally reaching the point where she was ready for a relationship. But Peak Hill is not only a love story, it is also about relationships; not only between a couple, but also between siblings, parents and children, cousins and friends.
The story is set predominantly in rural New Zealand where the setting provides a rich backdrop for the characters.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really, I just make sure that I write every day and I constanlty challenge myself to improve.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I enjoy New Zealand writers such as Janet Frame, Maurice Gee and Eleanor Catton. However, I try to read widely including classics and contemporary works in a variety of genres.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently editing my second manuscript, a romantic thriller called ‘Closed’ and have two to other projects partially completed.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I haven’t worked that out yet. I’m hoping it’s Awesome Books or one of their affiliates.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Not yet! I’m, new too! I’m not sure I’ll ever get off this massive learning curve!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write your first draft from beginning to end without stopping to edit or critique.
What are you reading now?
I like to have a few books on the go. I’m currently half-way through ‘Gone with the wind’, just finished ‘Miss Peregrines home for peculiar children’ and I am listening to ‘Pride and Prejudice’ (again for the umpteenth time) and ‘A Passage to India’ on audio books.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Just finish editing and then publish my next MS and then put all my energies into completing the next two and completing my advanced diploma.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Only four? Hmmm…’The Rehearsal’ by Eleanor Catton, ‘Fool’s gold’ by Zana Bell, ‘Outlander’ by Diana Galbadon, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Nicole R. Locker is a resident of Lubbock, Texas. She has a Master of Science in Psychology and a love for pit bulls, Pilates, and romance novels. Nicole dreamed of becoming a writer since grade school after writing her first poem in 4th grade at the age of nine. A Social Worker since 2008, she has published life-coaching books on self-esteem and personal relationships, and has now added Fiction Romance to her repertoire.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent book is Second Thoughts, which is an alternate POV to my first fiction romance novella, First Impressions. What inspired Second Thoughts was that everyone who was reading First Impressions kept telling me they wanted more. So far, there hasn’t been a continuation story developing in my mind, but I did go back and re-write the story from the male character’s point of view. The initial idea for this “series” (no worries, they are both standalone if that’s your preference) came early one morning while I was running on a treadmill at the Rec Center of Texas Tech University. Also, there is a lot in Second Thoughts that you don’t get in First Impressions, so if you’ve already read First Impressions… well, let’s just say there’s two sides to every story!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really, although sometimes I will take a pen and one of those blank journals and write entire chapters by hand before I go back and type them out on my computer. I feel like my creative juices just flow a little bit better that way for some reason. Inevitably, when I do go back and type it all up, I will add, change, or remove some of the things I wrote.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m not sure that any particular author has influenced my writing, specifically, since my most favorite books tend to be paranormal romance, and so far all of my fiction romance has been anchored within the confines of realism. One of my all time favorite writers is Dannika Dark, and I hope to someday create the depth of characters and the superior creativity that Dark never fails to have in her books. Her Mageri Series is hands down my favorite books of all time, followed by Shannon Mayer’s Rylee Adamson Series in a close second.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on an adult romance novel I’ve titled Tragedy & Desire. I’ve been serializing chapters on Wattpad at https://www.wattpad.com/story/78646858-tragedy-desire or you can add it to your To-Read shelf on GoodReads https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31556565-tragedy-desire. It’s about 2 chapters away from being completed and sent off to my editor.
Tragedy & Desire is about a 24 year old woman, Perla, starting a new job after some unfortunate events left her desperate to vacate her previous one. Her first day as a legal assistant is pretty much a nightmare, and on her way out for the evening, she runs into (literally) a gorgeous but rich guy who she would be so attracted to, were it not for his obvious socioeconomic status. After her parents were murdered nearly 8 years prior in a home invasion, she and her younger sister blamed their family’s wealth and left their hefty inheritance to collect dust and interest in a bank downtown, unwilling to use it. Because of the biases that her past has created, she refuses to allow herself to get involved with this sexy stranger, Jax Maddox, but he is a force to be reckoned with and doesn’t know how to take no for an answer.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far I am still working on that. I don’t think there is a one-size-fits-all approach, but definitely running sales for free books has helped. I’ve only recently discovered the existence of websites like Awesomegang, so I definitely intend to use them more often!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
The best advice I can give to new authors is, invest in a good book cover, don’t skimp on editing, and make quality connections to promote your book instead of popping into various forums to leave a link to your book expecting others to click on it and buy. The chances are, no one pays attention to those, and people are much more likely to read your books when they feel some kind of positive connection with you personally.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Does this have to be about book publishing? I think the best advice I’ve ever heard is:
1. Pick your battles.
2. Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to. (And if you ask, then be prepared to hear the honest answer.)
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading a few different things, actually. Avalon Dreams by Alexa Whitewolf, which is a review request for my book blog (my way of giving back to the Indie Book Community). I’ve started reading the Rylee Adamson Epilogues by Shannon Mayer, and I’m also at some point planning on finishing the Harry Potter books… I’ve read 1, 2, and 7 completely… not in that order (I read book 7 after I saw The Halfblood Prince at the movie theater, then went back and started from the beginning)… now I’m midway through #3.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Next is to finish Tragedy & Desire. Then, who knows? I was also thinking of writing a Christmas novella for NaNoWriMo, but that may be pushed back to November if I can get to it, after I finish my current WIP.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh no, 4 is the max limit? Well, I guess they would have to be…
Sterling by Dannika Dark
Priceless by Shannon Mayer
Into the Darkness by K.F. Breene
The Girl She Used To Be by David Cristofano

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Robin Todd is an eighteen thousand year old vampire who has been every where and done everything. These days, he sits behind his computer and writes books about adventures lived several centuries ago. His books are in the Dark Fantasy genre, with themes of mystery and romance. He currently has four published books. Three of those are in the A Shade of Halloween series and the fourth is a standalone novel, Vampire Brothel. Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written four books and have just published my first one. All of my books are rhyming picture books for children aged from toddlers to about eight years old.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Scared of the Dark. I was very scared of the dark when I was younger and I still don’t feel comfortable trying to sleep in a silent, dark room now. I wanted to write a book that would help explain why we have a fear of the dark and that I think would have helped me when I was younger.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have to be comfy so usually write on my bed and quite often fall asleep mid way through writing! I don’t have a fixed time when I write so I can be writing at two in the afternoon or two in the morning.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I relate to the struggles JK Rowling had when she was writing the first Harry Potter. She’s an inspiration to keep going even when you don’t know where it’s going to take you.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on publishing The Blustery Day.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m just learning about marketing and promoting as I go along.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Do what is right for you. Listen to advice but at the end of the day you have to do what works for you. Don’t just try and write what’s in style at the moment, if everyone did that there would never be anything new. The internet changed the music industry, careers have been formed from blogging and videoing and the internet has changed the publishing industry as well. You don’t have to put all your hopes into traditional publishing now. Traditional publishing may give a sense of validation but you can also get that from yourself and your readers.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To thine own self be true.
What are you reading now?
Shoeless Joe which was the inspiration for Field of Dreams.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working on the books I’ve written to get them ready for publishing.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’m a Stranger Here Myself and The Cat Who Came in From the Cold by Deric Longden

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I won a prize for “writing interesting stories” when I was six years old so I guess writing was always there. It came out as soon as I literally learned how to put pen to paper. I discovered journalism in high school so I knew that’s what I wanted to do as a career. I was a reporter for the Associated Press and Miami Herald, among other newspapers, and worked as a correspondent in Latin America writing for major media outlets including Time, Business Week, Financial Times, the Houston Chronicle and The New York Times.
I’ve written two novels and co-wrote a non-fiction book, “Peace in the Hood: Working with Gang Members to End the Violence,” a groundbreaking book on gang intervention (Turner Publishing, 2014).
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I had two books released in August in a weird coincidence (different publishers).
“Skin of Tattoos” is a literary crime thriller set in LA’s gang underworld. We meet the protagonist, Magsm as he comes out of prison wanting, as most parolees do, to go straight and never return “behind the wall.” To do that, he has to get away from his gang, the Cyco Lokos, but the “clica” has undergone some changes since he’s been locked up, namely his rival Rico, who set him up on the charge that got him imprisoned, is now the “shotcaller” or leader. It’s a story of revenge and rivalry, but there are also other layers: Mags’s quest for his father’s approval, the hardships faced by a poor immigrant family, as well as the larger picture of the socioeconomic factors that drive gangs in our society in general.
“Girl on the Brink” is a YA romantic thriller that chronicles the story of a teen romance that turns abusive and how the protagonist, Chloe, recovers from this emotional upheaval.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I sit in this weird way with one leg folded to the side and the other leg crossed over it, angled to the other side so basically my legs are going in opposite directions. It looks odd and is totally un-ergonomic but I find it very comfortable!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Probably my favorite all time author is Graham Greene. Many of his books are about the concept of being a foreigner, an outsider/observer, which I relate to on a personal level since I’ve lived in many countries both as a child and as an adult. That feeling of being an outsider comes through in both my novels.
As a reader, I love immersing myself in foreign cultures and settings because you always learn something new. As a writer, Greene’s work made me see how key setting can be. It can almost become almost like another character with a personality all of its own.
Having lived in Central and South America, I’m also partial to Latin American authors. One of my favourite books is “The Goat’s Party” by Peruvian Nobel prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa. This book is a fictionalization of the 1961 plot to assassinate the Rafael Trujillo, the dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic for 31 years. I found it fascinating, like a window into an unseen world in the way it fleshed out historical events with the motivations and emotions of the real people.
What are you working on now?
I’m rewriting a romantic suspense novel called “In the Heat of the Tropics,” which I just pulled back from a publisher so I can rewrite and re-release it. The romance is between a newspaper reporter and a homicide cop who spar during a serial killer case, but sparks of passion fly.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I think you have to do everything in today’s cluttered book market. Social media, blog tours, personal outreach through authors’ groups, newsletters, library events. I’m doing a bit of everything. I’m at the beginning of the journey so I’ll see what works!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Believe in yourself and that you have something worthwhile to say. Don’t let anyone steer you from your path. Use adversity to develop strength. And just don’t give up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If someone critiques your work, it’s only one person’s opinion. But if two people make the same observation, you need to pay attention to what they’re saying. More often than not, it’s something that needs fixing.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading “Robbery Under Arms” by Rolf Boldrewood, which I picked it up because it’s an Australian classic despite my thought it might be a stodgy read–it was published in 1881. I was completely wrong! I’m spellbound by this frontier tale of Captain Starlight and the Marston boys: bushrangers, cattle rustlers but generally sympathetic scallywags as they evade the law through goldfields and bush country. It is deservedly a classic.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve got two novels both in the final stages. One is called “The Revolutionaries,” and it’s a literary political thriller based on the 2002 coup attempt in Venezuela, where I was living at the time and working as a freelance journalist. The other is called “Angels Lust.” It’s a detective mystery set in Los Angeles.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

Queen of the South by Arturo Perez-Reverte
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
