Bringing You Weekly Tips From Authors

Happy Saturday Authors!

This week I was a guest co-host on the Sell More Books Show. It has been a year or so since I was last on a podcast and it was fun. My friend Jim Kukral and I discussed a lot of news and interesting topics that are happening in the publishing world.

Get yourself a cup of coffee and give the podcast a listen. Let me know if you would like me to do more podcast in the future. I may have to start an Awesome Authors podcast or something.

Awesome Author - Wayne Meyers

wayne-chair-lowTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Wayne discovered his love for writing at ten years old when he wrote a story about the flowers from his bed sheets coming to life. With a voracious appetite for science-fiction and fantasy, it was only natural he turned his pen toward these genres, creating bold new worlds filled with exciting, interesting characters doing incredible things.
In addition to reading and writing science fiction and fantasy, Wayne enjoys spending time with his incredible family, walking, helping other aspiring authors, and remaining active in his community. His latest favourite TV show is Grimm, and if you play one of the latest Marvel Universe movies there’s a good chance he’ll stop what he’s doing to watch.
A Brooklyn native, Wayne currently lives in Northeastern Pennsylvania with his family and five cats, realizing his dreams one story at a time. He’d love to hear from you at WayneMeyers.com, where you can find his social media links and sign up for his mailing list.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I just self published VISITOR, a science fiction space opera style novel inspired by a vivid dream I had as a teenager.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not sure what constitutes “unusual” but I write whenever I can.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Many of the old time science fiction and fantasy authors I grew up with, such as Isaac Asimov, Tolkien, and Terry Pratchett.

What are you working on now?
Just finished my next book, a high fantasy story called, MYTHIKAL MAGIK.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up! Writing is a very challenging activity, but well worth the effort. Write as much as you can, critique other writers to help your own, and read as many books as you have time for.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write first, edit later.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing more books, perhaps a sequel to VISITOR.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
This is a question I find too hard to answer.

Awesome Author - Bodie Myers

Bodie-JesusTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a guitarist, writer and house husband living in Northern California. This is my second book and first with a new publisher called 10th Rule Books. My first was a Kindle Worlds book called Bringing Knives to Gunfights I did mostly for fun (actually everything I write is mostly for fun).
Mostly honestly I like to keep to myself. Plus I may be fictional myself.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Hell Book 1. It was inspired by the classic tough guy 80’s action movie line, “See you in Hell,” often uttered by the hero as he dispatches the bad guy. If there is a Hell, and I doubt there is, wouldn’t chanced be good they would meet again and continue whatever they were battling each other over. Some of my favorite power metal bands, such as Jag Panzer, Manowar, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Dio, provided further inspiration.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I do most of my writing at night, getting the best stuff done between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. I don’t ever do an outline, and never know how something is going to end when I start.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
For crime fiction Richard Stark, Elmore Leonard, and Robert Parker are my favorites, though there are plenty of newcomers like Greg Barth, Eric Beetner and Mike Monson doing great things in crime fiction.
Like everyone else I read a lot of Stephen King and Dean Koonz and it no doubt had an affect.
I also loved comics growing up and still kind of do. I should also give shoutouts to filmakers like John Carpenter, Robert Rodrigez, Quentin Tarintino, and Walter Will who influenced what I write as much or more than any novelist.

What are you working on now?
Hell Book 2

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Honestly I’m still trying to figure that one out. I hoping it is you guys, so far I’ve liked what I have seen.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m a new author myself, so I may not be the best person for advice but if I must: Just do it first of all. Second spend a lot of time on the re-write and keep in mind less is probably more.
Beer can be your friend and don’t be afraid to be terrible because the first things you write will be (though you may think they are great).

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just write. Elmore Leonards 10th rule (see a connection with my publisher?) from his 10 Rules of writing has proven to be helpful, basically he said ‘Leave out the boring parts.’

What are you reading now?
Garth Ennis Punisher Max volume 1, Ridgerunners by Rusty Barnes.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Probably massive failure. Hopefully I write another book better than the last one.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Rum Punch – Elmore Leonard
Comeback – Richard Stark
Life Expectancy – Dean Koonz
The Shining – Stephen King

Awesome Author - Shannon Thompson

DSC_0207-1Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Shannon A. Thompson, and I’m a young author, blogger, and poet. I’m also a cat lady who loves watching murder shows in the middle of the night. (I just can’t help myself.) I grew up all over the country – moving every two years – and I write YA books. Currently, I have two YA series out – The Timely Death Trilogy and Bad Bloods – and the first books in those series are free. If you love paranormal romance with new creatures, check out Minutes Before Sunset, book 1 of The Timely Death Trilogy. If you love X-Men and an election gone wrong, check out Bad Bloods: November Rain.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is actually two books: Bad Bloods November Rain and Bad Bloods November Snow.
Bad Bloods in 35 words or less: 17-year-old Serena is the only bad blood to escape execution. Now symbolized for an election, she must prove her people are human despite hindering abilities before everyone is killed and a city is destroyed.
It was inspired by how much politics affect the youth and others who don’t even have the right to vote.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am a vampire, which means I’m only awake at night. (Literally.) But my strangest writing habit is probably using Barbies.
#MondayBlogs Writing With Barbie

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Every book I read influences me! But I think Meg Cabot inspired me the most as a young reader.

What are you working on now?
The next Bad Bloods book!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I blog three times a week on https://shannonathompson.com! We talk about books, writing, and more.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read as much as you can! And keep writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Trust your reader.” Sometimes, it can be tempting to give away too much information, but most readers will feel out characters and his for themselves. Less is often more.

What are you reading now?
Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray! I love this series.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I will be at Penned Con in St. Louis this September, signing books, talking about books, and just being around bookish people.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Stranger by Albert Camus, a poetry collection by Billy Collins, and my current read so I could finish it and never wonder what happened.

Awesome Author - Frantz Michel

frantzTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello, I am a Christian author who has written 3 books (“Can God Save Haiti?”, “From The Fear of Voodoo to The Fear of God”, “THE BIBLE MADE EASY: A Complete Overview and Succinct Explanation of the 66 Amazing Books of the Bible”, plus a revised version of From the Fear of Voodoo to the Fear of God.

I am a Bible teacher and also proudly served in the US Military for 8 years. I currently live in Miami, Florida with my beautiful wife Lili and our two daughters.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled, “THE BIBLE MADE EASY: A Complete Overview and Succinct Explanation of the 66 Amazing Books of the Bible”

I noticed that many people, Christians, really do not understand the Bible. Many gave up so easily or let it be up to the Pastor to interpret the word for them because they feel like the Bible is hard to understand or has contradiction. Therefore, I felt compassion and a sense of urgency to help those who cannot understand the Bible by writing this book to show and teach them how beautiful and easy the Bible is to understand.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I basically write anywhere at any time. Once I got an inspiration, I quickly put it on paper before the thought flee from my mind.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jean Jacques Rousseau.
Book (s): Lost Tribes and Promised Lands

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on two books: “Is There Real Hope for Haiti?” and a book on Speaking in Tongues, of God or Satan?

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social media.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep writing. Even if you do not become the number 1 New York Times best-selling author or your books are not being sold in the quantity you would like, just keep writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t ever give up and work on my dream.

What are you reading now?
The Negro Question by Lee Cummings

What’s next for you as a writer?
Get my book in the hands of as many people as possible because I have a message that the world desperately needs to hear.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible and my own books.

Awesome Author - Jillian Hoff

Woman Eating Cereals And Reading In BedTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written many books, mostly erotica shorts, but as of right now I have only 3 published as ebooks (all through Amazon, for now).

I have been writing for many years, but I won’t say how many exactly as it may make me sound older than I am. I started young, trust me.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is GOOD FRIEND Volume 3: Spot Me. It is about a young woman who happens upon an old high school classmate late one night in a 24-hour gym. Alone with their memories and all that equipment, the two sort out some longstanding frustrations in a carnal manner.

It was inspired by running into old friends after many years and seeing all the ways they change and how inspiring it can be when those changes are positive. And also internet porn.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m still sorting those out. The jury is out on whether I write better erotica pent up or satisfied. It is a time of serious experimentation around my house.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
As a child I loved Roald Dahl and Judy Blume, which of course put me in just the right spot for J.K. Rowling to introduce Harry Potter’s world to me as I got a little older. As an adult, I love the books featuring Agent Pendergast by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child. GOOD OMENS by Terry Pratchett‎ & ‎Neil Gaiman blew my mind as a teenager, as did just about everything by Tom Robbins. Mix all that up with sneaking reads of letters to Penthouse and it probably starts to make some sense.

What are you working on now?
I am working on Volume 4 of the GOOD FRIENDS series, which will be at least 6 volumes (with a special Volume 0 that only my mailing list subscribers will get.) So I’m working on 4 & 0 right now. I’m also planning out a much longer story with spy and assassin elements, but that’s for a ways down the line.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m really new to this, so for the time being it’s my own website, twitter, and you guys.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be writing, or be thinking about writing. Always have a small notebook or some folded paper or something with you BECAUSE YOU WILL FORGET THAT GREAT IDEA IF YOU DON’T WRITE IT DOWN.

Write what you know, or get inspired enough by what you write to try it for yourself. Within reason, of course. I certainly haven’t done everything I’ve written about. Yet.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Most of it got printed in a book by Stephen King called ON WRITING.
Between that, the Sermon on the Mount, out of context passages from Ayn Rand, and anything the ladies say into the cameras on Chaturbate, I’m able to cobble together a decent philosophy for living.

What are you reading now?
THE CITY OF MIRRORS by Justin Cronin.

What’s next for you as a writer?
More writing, and with any luck the opportunity to do it on a larger scale.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Blank notebooks to fill.
