Bringing You Weekly Tips From Authors

Happy Saturday Authors!

This week over on Kboards there was some action when a writer got her Amazon account shut down over what I think was some sort of click bot scheme. While I am happy that she got her account back in good standing In her original post she mentioned that it could have been due to promotion websites.

After a few post she realized that the books in question where not submitted to the promo sites she had mentioned. (We were not one of them)

It didn't matter though as all book promotion sites instantly came under scrutiny and rightful so based on her original post. She went in and modified her post when she realized the error but by that time there were already 4 or 5 author websites reporting that a book promotion site caused an author to be removed from Amazon KDP.

While everyone meant good and tried to help the speculation that the post caused was nothing more than speculation. The original post was over 20 pages long as everyone came up with theories. The moderators did a great job of editing the forum but if you go and look now you will see that book promotion sites are mentioned throughout the first 5 or six pages on the thread.

The reason I am talking about this is because of the speculation. I am sure that the 3 book sites that were mentioned were probably under a lot of pressure for no reason and I am sure they had a less than stellar week. I know submissions to us were slightly down. I still had to pay people to work when there wasn't that much to do. I can't imagine what it did to their staffs.

What I would like to take away from this is to not take action on anything you hear based on one writers experience. It may not be what it seems but when they tell 2 friends and they tell 2 friends the rumors start. Authors were pulling their books out of Kindle Unlimited for no good reason. Think before you take an action that affects your bottom line and writing career. Sometimes taking a deep breath and thinking about it is the way to go.

Here is a link to the thread http://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,237687.0.html You would be better off spending your time writing but after I talked about the thread for so long I figured I owed it to you to see what I was writing about.

Awesome Author - Claire Boston

HeadShotTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My first contemporary romance was published in 2014 and that was followed closely by the other three books in The Texan Quartet. I am currently editing the third book in my next series, The Flanagan Sisters which will be out in October 2016.

When I’m not writing I can be found in the garden attempting to grow vegetables, or racing around a vintage motocross track. I also enjoy playing cards and board games.

I live in Western Australia, just south of Perth, with my husband, who loves even my most annoying quirks, and my grubby, but adorable Australian bulldog.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest release is Break the Rules which is book 1 in The Flanagan Sisters series. It was inspired after reading Bad Ground, which is the true story of the Beaconsfield mining disaster that occurred in Tasmania, Australia a few years ago. Two men were trapped underground for two weeks after the tunnel they were in collapsed.
The story got me thinking what would I do in a similar situation, or how would I react if I was on the team trying to get them out. The setting of the story changed from an underground mine to an oil refinery as time went by, and focused on the heroine working in a male dominated industry.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
It depends on your definition of unusual! I have a really structured routine to make sure I get the words down each day, and some people might think that strange.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read my first Nora Roberts when I was about eleven and I fell in love with romance and all of her books.

What are you working on now?
I’m just finishing Blaze a Trail which is the third book in The Flanagan Sisters series. It’s due to be sent to my editor by the end of the month. I’m also playing around with the idea for a fourth book in the series.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This is hard to answer. I’ve been traditionally published up until now and so it’s been difficult to tell what has been the most effective marketing tool. I do like interacting with readers on Facebook and at book launches. I’ve also tried promotion in newsletters with various degrees of success.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t try and do it all at once. The most important thing is writing the next book, but do schedule some time for promotion and social media. Every time I hear of something new to try out, I add it to a list and slowly I work through and investigate whether it will be useful for me. Remember what works for one person, might not work for you.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You can’t edit a blank page. This gave me the courage to just write without censoring myself or worrying that it wasn’t perfect.

What are you reading now?
I’m between books at the moment, but I have a bunch of books on my bookshelf that I want to get to.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m playing around with the idea of a novella length non-fiction series and I want to brush off some of the fantasy novels I’ve written and see if I can sell them. When I’ve finished The Flanagan Sisters series, I’ll decide on a new romance series to write.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Can I bring my Kobo with lots of books? The battery life is pretty good and I think I could read more than just four books.

Awesome Author - Jack Strange

Jack-Strange-in-colourTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a former odd-job man. I’ve worked in many jobs including moving corpses in and out of a morgue. I have a wife and two adult daughters and they all seem to approve of my aspiration to become a full-time novelist, which I’m very pleased about.

I’ve written two works of non-fiction (but you won’t want to know about those – trust me on that!) and one novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The ame of my novel is ‘Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse’.

The inspiration for it came from many places. I was thinking one day about the fact that most, if not all, zombie fiction, depicts zombies as brutish and unintelligent. I got to thinking: what if they were as clever as us? What would the consequences be? I decided to write a book that would set out to answer that question. In the course of writing it, I decided it would be more interesting if my zombies liked their food cooked, just as we do. It seemed natural to assume that intelligent creatures would desire cooked food. From there, it was just a small step to envisage some kind of chain of events that would transform all the celebrity chefs on the planet into zombies, and ensure that they knew a thing or two about cooking their food (the human species!).

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t write my books in the order in which they’ll be read. I might write a middle bit, and then a beginning section then a closing section, and so on. I flit back and forth along the timeline.

I don’t make any plan for my books, either. I just let them roll out any which way they want to.

I believe that the subconscious mind is far better at planning than the conscious mind.

It works for me, anyway.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Way too many to list here, but I’ll name a few.

Ernest Hemingway. Love his stripped-down style.

The great American pulp-fiction authors of the ’50s and earlier:

E.g., Theodore Sturgeon, Jim Thompson, Richard matheson. Every aspiring writer can learn lots from these guys – how to begin and end chapters, how to pace a novel and build suspense, and so on.

Russell H Greenan. Why is it that so few people appreciate him? – As soon as you’ve rushed out and bought my book and read it, go buy ‘It Happened in Boston?’ by Russell H Greenan. That man knew how to plot, and how to use words.

I could name many more, but it’d take all day.

What are you working on now?
The sequel to ‘Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse. It’s called ‘Zomcats’.

Given that there’s a cat in my first novel, you might be able to guess what the second novel is about.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook, probably.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the best book you can, then promote it as best you can.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
‘Don’t wait for inspiration; go looking for it with a club’ – Jack London

What are you reading now?
‘Clusterfuck’ by Carlton Merrick III
‘Sun and steel’ by Yukio Mishima

What’s next for you as a writer?
A fuck of a lot more writing!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
‘It happened in Boston?’ by Russell H Greenan. I’ll always enjoy dipping into that book.
À la recherche du temps perdu by Marcel proust ( a good meaty desert island read)
The complete works of Shakespeare (you just have to read some Shakespeare!)
The Bible (not that I’m religious – I just think that maybe I’d get round to reading it at long last if I was on a desert island with a limited supply of reading matter)

Awesome Author - Kestra Pingree

me-and-babyTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an artist who likes to do a variety of things. I sing, I draw, but most of all I write. There’s just something thrilling about telling a story. I crave it.

As for how many books I’ve written… that’s a harder question to answer. I have three books published currently. All three of those books belong to the Soul Seer Saga. As of now, I also have three books written and almost completely revised. So, soon I’ll have six books published. Two more of those will be in the Soul Seer Saga and the other is a standalone young adult novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest published book is Desert Dweller: The Lunar Dancer. It’s a short story that gives a bigger look into the world of the Soul Seer Saga.

I can’t say any one thing inspired the Soul Seer Saga itself, but I’m a big fan of dystopian novels. I drew inspiration from all the different dystopian series I’ve read, sprinkled in a little fantasy, and came up with the Soul Seer Saga.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I’m big into planning and outlines though. I won’t start writing a story until I have all my groundwork done.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Neal Shusterman. He’s written some of my all-time favorite books. The Unwind Dystology is my favorite series, and Challenger Deep is my favorite standalone novel.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on my standalone young adult novel. I’m marching into some new territory with that story, so I hope it all works out!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Right now I’m simply experimenting with the first book in the Soul Seer Saga being free. That change has helped me move more copies just on its own. Beyond that, I use social media sites.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be prepared for a lot of perseverance. I don’t know what else to say beyond that. I still feel like a new author myself. There’s a lot to learn, but with hard work, you can make it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You can accomplish anything as long as you keep fighting for it and never give up.

What are you reading now?
Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Experimenting with genre.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman would be #1. I’ll keep that book close to my heart, always. Blue Fish by Pat Schmatz would be my second. Third would have to be Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson.

Awesome Author - Allan Greenbrier

20160420_084940Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Glad you could take a moment. They call me Allan. I am from southern California and still there, now in San Diego. My first entrepreneurial venture was with my best friend. We started a surfboard company, KeDa Surfboards. We sold a lot of boards. With money in our jeans, we bought cars, and discovered girls. That was the end of KeDa.

From there I journeyed into science and technology writing for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. In many ways, the regulatory approval of products is essentially the art of bringing boring data sets to life. Demonstrating the value of the product by making the information readable, engaging, entertaining, and connected to real people wins approvals. Success in that art has earned me the freedom to chase the art of fictional story telling. I love it.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Quiescence Terminated was inspired by the current state of terrorism, the rise of terrorist capabilities sponsored by a state actor like Iran and the impact that kind of terrorism could have on the presidential electoral process in the US.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Typically up at 4 am and writing until 7 or so, a walk to breakfast. Tennis till the afternoon then writing till dinner. While in the last year and a half I have only self published one book I have actually written three others. The writing is fun. The marketing not so much.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stevenson ‘Treasure Island’
Sidney Sheldon
Hemmingway ‘The Old Man and the Sea, and the Snows of Kilamanjo’

What are you working on now?
Finishing a standalone adventure series I call beach reads ‘the getaway’ series. Patterned after Sheldon’s Hart tot Hart TV series.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still learning the marketing. Website Novelsbyallan.com

Do you have any advice for new authors?
We all love writing, keep at it. Marketing not so much but with 200,000 new titles showing up on Kindle per month it is a necessary part of the writers life.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Eat half, walk double, laugh triple, and love without measure.”

What are you reading now?
“Dark Mysteries of the Vatican” by Paul Jefferies.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Continuing to learn to entertain through prose.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
How to Build a Boat, How to Survive at Sea, How to Catch Fish without Bait & the Bible.

Awesome Author - LaTonya Watkins

316138_1946630585174_8331066_nTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
LaTonya Watkins lives in Alabama. She enjoys reading and writing books in the fantasy, romance, and religion genres. Writing for her has always been a fun outlet to get away from day to day issues and settle down for the day. It has taken her sometime to realize that no other career path work. She is the author of three books written for those who are looking for something new and exciting. She loves building a world that doesn’t exist in the real world. Then she creates characters that tear it down in an epic way.

When she is not working as a full-time author, she enjoys watching television, shopping, driving around town, hanging out, crocheting, and spending time with her cat Samara. Her goal as an author is to write the things she is most passionate about and entertain those who wish to escape reality.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Last Seeker Guardian Book 2
I wrote the book from a dream I had. It started as an imagination and I expanded it by adding characters to go with the epic world. I usually don’t remember my dreams, but this one I manged to remember some detail, jolting down the experience before expanding it forward. I find that writing in scenes help me better organize my thoughts when they are all over the place.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to write between the hours of mid-night and two in the morning when I’m a night owl and four in the morning to eight in the morning when I’m a early bird.
I also find that my thoughts flow much better when I am isolated and when I am lying down in my bedroom.
Sometimes I will not eat anything the whole day if I got something exciting to write.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite author is Kristina Douglas with the Fallen Series. It has been my all time favorite since I started reading it when I was in college. I love her style of writing and the steamy romance in her dark fantasy novel. I’m also a fan of J.C. DIEM Mortis Series. The first book in the series was my all time favorite since I was looking for something new concerning vampires. It was gruesome, it was rough, and it was vampirific!!!

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on Huntsmen Book 3 in the Last Seeker Series.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I usually promote my books on social media first and my blog: www.ebookfantasyreaders.com Later, I want to try book signing when I have built a readership, etc. Right now I am focusing on building a book collection so that readers have many options to choose from.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Before you get into this industry, you have to love what you do because it isn’t easy. Don’t expect to get rich, but let your book sales surprise you. You’ll have to study and research marketing, editing, publishing, and so on. You’ll learn something new everyday as you continue to write.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To become great at your craft you must never give up and practice, practice, practice! Eventually, you’ll get it.

What are you reading now?
Sacred Bloodlines by Wendy L. Owens

What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to take each day at a time and study my craft until I have reached my full potential.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

Awesome Author - Sharon Stiles

sharonstiles-oct2005-onwhite-200Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a hypnotherapist and in the past have written a few ebooks as part of video webinars on sleep and stress. I have just written my first standalone book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Stop Trying To Be Positive: How to reduce negative thoughts without forcing yourself to be positive.

The inspiration came from my clients. I see a lot of people who have lives dominated by anxiety and negative thoughts. The standard response from a lot of people is to look on the bright side and think positively but that can be hard work. I wrote the book to help people find a naturally more positive mindset so they don’t have to struggle with the forced positivity that can seem impossible to achieve.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No

What authors, or books have influenced you?
A lot of people in the self help industry have influenced me – hypnotists, energy practitioners, nutritionists, positive thinking experts. Some have been published authors and others have been professionals at workshops.

What are you working on now?
I am completing a book I wrote several years ago about chronic illness and mindset. The person who was going to market it never did and so it has just been sitting around since then.

I have also started a novel about a hypnotist so hope to have that completed soon.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This is my first book so I can’t say.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
As a new author I can’t really comment. I am reading advice from existing authors so hope that will prove successful.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
With regard to writing it would be that completing the book is just the start because there is a lot of promotion to do.

In general life I think it wold be to prepare for the worst, expect tbe best and then you are ready for whatever happens.

What are you reading now?
The Will to Live which is about the effect of the mind in illness. Also A Second Chance which is the final book in a series about a woman’s life in New Zealand at the turn of the 20th century.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing my novel about a hypnotist is the next thing on the list I then have ideas for some more books with the same character. Some more practical self help books are planned. Now I just need the time.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That is such a difficult one because I dread being without anything to read so if I was going to be there for a long time they would have to be long books. I think I would take an encyclopaedia because it would be full of interesting things. I would also take a couple of good mysteries or detective stories. If it’s allowed, I would take an empty notebook so that I could write my own books as I would definitely have the time on a desert island.

Awesome Author - Shabbir Hossain

IMG_1250.smaller-sizeTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Shabbir Hossain graduated from University of South Alabama in 1994 with a BS degree in Business Marketing. He started his first business the year before graduating – Byte 1 Computers and Software. Where Shabbir and his friend and partner build and sold computers to various local businesses. In those days the demands for personal computers were not very great, so they ended up closing the doors in just 18 months.
After moving to Tampa, Florida, Shabbir leased a BP gas station from a local company, launching his first gas station venture. Shortly after that, he applied to the BP Oil Corporation to become an authorized dealer and was ultimately selected to lease and operate either one of two stations. One was in Greenville, SC, and the other one in Mobile, AL.
Having lived in Mobile before, Shabbir chose to move back to Mobile and worked hard to build up a relationship with the local community there. Before long, Shabbir owned seven gas stations and secured yearly sales were over $5 million dollars on a consistent basis.
In last 20 plus years in business, he has owned, leased, operated and or sold over 25 Gas Station Businesses. Along with gas stations, he also has been involved in many other retail businesses like Quiznos fast food chain, liquor stores, laundromat even a wholesale operation where he sold to 85 local gas stations and convenience stores.
The key behind Shabbir’s rapid success was mostly common sense marketing, creative promotion, and innovative new age merchandising skills – the type of strategies that so many gas station owners overlook, along with common sense location management strategies.
Today, Shabbir shares his knowledge and expertise of gas station business management via the CStore Business Academy blog site (http://gasstationbusiness101.com).
Shabbir recently started a new weekly audio podcast show call “Gas Station Business 101 Podcast”. In this podcast he talks about all the recent changes, opportunities, and challenges of today’s gas station business, he also shares tips, tricks and ideas on how to start, run and grow a gas station business successfully in todays economy.
You can find his show in many of the fine podcasting directories like iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry, and Tunein radio.

Shabbir has published 4 books so far, out of the 4 books, 2 are on gas station and retail business and one on retail marketing. The 4th book is a free book he wrote on passive income ideas.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The last book I published is Gas Station Business Start-Up. This book is truly a summary of a few episodes of my podcast show. You may ask why would I publish it as a book, well after writing the first book and starting my podcast, I have realized, some people want fast and quick answers to 6 very common questions, they don’t want to read a 200 page book that includes everything under the sun about Gas Station Business.
In my first book I talked a lot about how to find and buy the ideal business then I went on to talk about how to grow that business with proper marketing and merchandising strategies. But in this book I simply answer 6 most asked questions ever.
1. How do I find a good business for Sale?
2. How to find out how much money a gas station is making?
3. How do I come up with right pricing/valuation of a gas station?
4. What is The Return On Investment (ROI) in a gas station Business?
5. How to write the best business plan for a gas station?
6. How do I get a bank to finance my deal?

In last 3 years these are the 6 questions I received over and over in my email, more than any other questions.
So this book is a quick start up guide for those who are looking to get into gas station business and need to find these answers in a hurry.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Funny you asked, I usually spend about 4-5 hours a day on the road. While I drive I keep a notepad handy and every time I get an idea I note them down (off course only when I am at a traffic light and not moving). I use bullet points and later when I am at my desk I elaborate on those bullet points. Unusual ? You decide

What authors, or books have influenced you?
When I first read the 4-Hour work week by Tim Ferris, I was taken back by his analogy. I would say his book had a very positive influence on me and my work.

What are you working on now?
Last few weeks I am working on my podcast and trying to create some instructional videos for my blog readers.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I think Amazon is the only channel I tried selling and promoting my books.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I myself is new to writing, so I don’t think I am in a position to give any advice as of yet.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
A friend told me once ” You don’t have to be a writer to write a book or a good blog post, as long as you have something to share, you should write it, let your readers decide the rest”

What are you reading now?
Rich dad poor dad by Robert Kiyosaki

What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to write a fiction that I have outlined many years ago, but never did get enough courage to get started yet.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Team of Rivals
A Brief History of Time
Born to Run

I think these 3 books are plenty for me

Awesome Author - Ronson Duncan

ron-2Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a native of Louisville, KY (correctly pronounced LOU-A-VULL) and now reside on the Gulf Coast of Florida. I formerly owned and operated a Tampa Bay boat towing business called SEA-TOW, where I worked hand-in-hand with the Coast Guard during oil spills and rescuing stranded boaters. It was the product of my experiences there that inspired my first novel “WIRED” published in 2010.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“TAKEN & AFRAID” is a stand-alone sequel published in 2015. It picks up the action six months after WIRED ends and it has received rave reviews on Amazon. You can check them out on Amazon or my website at www.ronsonduncan.com.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m a morning person and do most of my writing in the wee hours. I’m pretty much brain dead after twelve noon.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve always been drawn to fiction with the likes of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and John Sanford. I also enjoy Dan Brown, John Grisham, and Clive Cussler. They’re all very talented fiction writers.

What are you working on now?
Right now I’m polishing the TAKEN & AFRAID screenplay, which was recently adapted by screenwriter, Katherine VanPelt. She did a super job in writing the movie script and everyone expects T&A to hit the silver screen. It will be available for option in August 2016.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Most of my promotion is done through Amazon and my website: www.ronsonduncan.com. I also use free book sites like Awesomegang to expand my readership. The last time I did a free book giveaway, I reached over 1,800 new readers, which is (get ready for it) “awesome.”

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writing is a merciless master. It’s a journey rather than a destination. Keep plugging away at your writing and don’t get discouraged. The more you write, the better you will get. Write at least two hours every day and read other authors in your genre. I am still learning.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“You will miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky

What are you reading now?
“All The Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. He’s an amazing long-form writer.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ll be spending the next few months promoting my two screenplays: WIRED and TAKEN& AFRAID. Please keep your fingers crossed for me.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

Awesome Author - M.R. Graham

ProfileTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello! Call me M. I’m an anthropologist by training and an educator by trade, collector of pens, hats, umbrellas, and tea tins, student of history and folklore, aficionada of all that is steampunk or gothic. I have published six books and two short stories – science fiction, fantasy, horror, and poetry.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent book – upcoming release – is called No Cage for a Crow. It’s a Victorian adventure featuring Morrigan, the sister of Sherlock Holmes. I like sharp women in my literature, and I like my nineteenth-century London dark and dirty beneath the sparkle and pompous pageantry of the upper classes.
This one will be serialized. Part one is up for preorder right now, and part two will follow shortly.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
To have unusual writing habits, I’d have to have writing habits, and I’m afraid I’m horribly irregular.
I will say, though, that I write everything longhand before it gets typed up. I type very fast, and sometimes my fingers can outstrip my brain, and I have to delete huge swaths of text that made no sense at all. Writing longhand gives me more time to craft a sentence, and moving it from paper to screen gives me a chance to squeeze in round one of editing, right there.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a huge fan of the nineteenth and early twentieth century writers, of Poe and Doyle, Lovecraft, Stoker, Gaskell, Wodehouse, Christie, Sayers, and earlier writers like Ann Radcliffe and Mary Shelley.
I also love Montague Summers. He was nuttier than a fruitcake, but his entirely-serious work on vampirism, witchcraft, and demonology provides excellent material for fictional terrors.

What are you working on now?
Far too much.

I have the ongoing Liminality series reaching its midpoint with The Mage (which follows The Medium and The Mora). With luck and diligence, it will be out late this year or early next.

No Cage for a Crow, while written, is still in process, and will take a lot of work yet before the serial is complete. Morrigan Holmes is likely to receive a number of other books once this one is published in its entirety.

A third project is in the pipeline, to be completed heaven-knows-when. It is, for the moment, titled “We Shall Not Sleep” and follows the next generation of vampire-hunters after the events of Dracula in the gin-soaked aftermath of the Great War.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Word of mouth, for the most part. At science-fiction/fantasy conventions, my strategy is to make awkward eye contact with people until they come over and talk to me. I’m rubbish at actual promotion, but it’s amazing how many people will buy a book anyway after a nice conversation.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
The usual advice seems to be “keep writing.” It’s good advice, so I’ll stick with that. When you’re doing really well, write more. When you feel like there’s no point, write more. A single idea might be wonderful or terrible, but if you never stop, you’re bound to hit on a gem some time.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Pay an editor.
Or at the very least, don’t edit your own work. Find a qualified friend, or your fourth-grade teacher, or your grandmother, if she’ll be honest with you. Find someone you can trust to rip it apart, because the market is glutted with brilliant ideas cloaked in dense gloop. Everyone writes gloop. Everyone. And no one is able to see their own gloop. That’s what editors are for.

What are you reading now?
What am I NOT reading now? I have a stack of books on my bedside table so high I can’t see the lamp. Some of it is research and some of it is recreation.
One that I can recommend, though, is the Vampires Don’t Belong in Fairytales series by Alicia L. Wright.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Well… more writing, I suppose. I have a to-be-written backlog that will last me the next decade, at least, so no danger of writer’s block.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I choose to cheat and grab collections! The Complete Sherlock Holmes, The Complete Edgar Allan Poe, The complete fictions of G.K. Chesterton, and My Man, Jeeves.

Awesome Author - A.E. Kendall

AE-Kendall-PicTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a fan of M/M Romance in just above every genre and have written 2 books and am working on my 3rd in the Clash at Sea series, chronicling the adventures and romance of a young French nobleman who comes of age after being kidnapped on the high seas and the rover who steals him from his ship.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book Alain & the Duke: a Clash at Sea series novella.

Alain & the Duke is an offshoot of Book 1, The Quartermaster & the Marquis’ Son which I was inspired to write after readers wished to learn more about Alain, Michel’s mysterious older brother who so influenced his actions in Book 1. In this short novella, we are given a little more insight into who Alain is and what drives his actions and view of the world. While it is not at sea and is a precursor to Book 1, it’s a fast, fun and sexy read. Best of all, it’s available FREE through the month of June in celebration of Pride month!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have a pretty busy schedule so I have to write whenever I can find the time. So I use a number of different tools, including my kindle to write as well as to revise my manuscripts when I am on the run. It helps me to stay productive and push myself to get my writing done no matter where I am, wherever I can grab a minute.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Definitely Gordon Merrick influenced me those most. I first read his sweeping novels Forth into Light and the Great Urge Downward when I was 17 or 18 which was a bit unusual for a straight, teenage girl given the content and pretty graphic sex scenes, LOL! While my sister saved money for her Harlequin romances, I saved my money to buy Gordon Merrick’s books which opened up a whole different world for me. It’s where I learned that love between two men could be both beautiful and perilous, even in the most beautiful of settings (Greece or on a tropical beach).

In more contemporary times, I enjoy reading Harper Fox who is possessed of a beautiful writing style and has an incredible gift for writing historical fiction with masculine yet vulnerable characters. Kindle Alexander is another favorite who knows how to bring a whole new level of “steam” to the written page with strong and sexy men.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on Into the Maelstrom, Book 2 of the Clash at Sea series. It’s the continuing adventure-laden romantic saga of Galen, the seasoned rover and Michel, his young French nobleman lover, the heroes of Book 1. The book opens with their arrival in Jamaica and Michel’s long-awaited reunion with his brother, Alain. In addition to more fully introducing Alain to readers, we also learn more about Galen and his mysterious past. We also experience a growing tension between he and Alain which will test the bounds of Galen’s relationship with Michel.

In Maelstrom, readers can expect humor, action, adventure and romance between Galen, our hunky pirate hero and Michel, the beautiful French nobleman he takes on as his matelot and lover.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve found that both Twitter and FB provide a wide reach to spread the word about my books. Also, using Kindle in combination with other publishing platforms is a way to get your book to fans everywhere. I’ve had great results too with sites like Awesomegang and BooksGoSocial to help spread the word out about special promos and other quality books.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t be swayed by a less than stellar review or let it hinder your passion for writing. Different strokes for different folks is true in every field and industry. For every naysayer out there, there are always many more people who may have a different and positive take on your work though not all may leave reviews.

Also, get your work out there! You’ll be surprised to find that others enjoy your style of writing. But put in the necessary time and work to put out a quality piece. There are great resources out there at competitive prices so you don’t have to break the bank, whether you are just starting out or a veteran writer. Use them!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Promote! Promote! Promote! Also, keep writing!

What are you reading now?
Right now I am reading several books in very different genres including Wisdom for Creating Happiness & Peace by Daisaku Ikeda, The Undefeated Mind by Alex Lickerman, MD, and re-reading A Private Gentleman, a sweet romance with less than perfect heroes by Heidi Cullinan.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Just to keep writing steamy M/M romances, expanding my potential and enjoying life.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A desert island you say? Definitely, Driftwood by Harper Fox, Full Disclosure by Kindle Alexander, The Quartermaster & the Marquis Son by yours truly, and the Island by Lisa Henry. I can read these books (and I have!) over and over to entertain myself. LOL!

Awesome Author - J.D. Miller

theJDMillerTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born and raised in the grand hoosier state of Indiana. I released my first book this past May.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first book, The Steel Harvest, was inspired by my wish to write a story atypical to the dystopian genre. What if someone could tell a story centralized around relationships at the end of the world? It was questions like this that first started to form what would become The Steel Harvest.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to blare music at odd hours at the night.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Chris D’Lacy and Rick Rordan have been big literary influences for me. I’ve also pulled a lot of inspiration from the storytelling styles present in Light Novels, a type of book originating from Japan.

What are you working on now?
I currently engrossed in marketing The Steel Harvest, as well as beginning preliminary work on a sequel to The Steel Harvest.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve found social media is a great way to connect with readers, reviewers, and even other authors. Twitter in particular has proved especially helpful.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t let anyone tell you that breaking into the writing industry is impossible. It’s far from impossible; we live in a time where publishing a book is as simple as uploading it to the internet. With a little hard work and determination, anything is possible.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.” Robin Williams (my hero) said this once, and I stand by it wholeheartedly. What else do we have at the end of the day but our words and ideas?

What are you reading now?
SPARK: How Creativity Works by Julie Burstein

What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to continue writing, and to continue the story I began in The Steel Harvest, which is a planned series. You can expect volume two sometime next year!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Hmm, that’s a tough one. Probably the first and last volume of Spice & Wolf by Isuna Hasekura, along with Life in the Greenwood by Lansing Marion Florence

Awesome Author - Angelin Sydney

Avatar-2Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written and published six books. My debut novella was Courting Pippa, which received very good reviews and ratings on Smashwords and Goodreads.

This was quickly followed by Lifesaver in a Bikini, a romance/thriller. Basically, this is the prequel to the Cameron Series.

Book One of the Cameron series is entitled Return to Cameron Country, about an Australian Special Forces soldier named Bryce Cameron and the love of his life, Belle. Book Two, entitled Cameron of the Skies is about Black Hawk Helicopter Pilot Banjo Cameron of the Australian Air Corp. This also features Andy Cosgrove, a U. S. Nightstalker-in-training helicopter pilot. Both are full-length action/thriller/romance novels.

Two stand-alone books followed. Loving Faith and Hope and a short story called When Angels Dare.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My lastest book offering was Loving Faith Hope.

It has an interesting premise: Love is not deserved, it is given. The main protagonist, Luke Walker, is an L.A. firefighter. He’s our typical hero – good looking, tall and sexy. That is, until he lost his good looks saving his surrogate sister from a burning building. His long-term girlfriend sees him only as the hero he is, but all he sees is a disfigured man. Would he be able to accept the love she’s offering?

It is a story that tells of the many shapes and forms love takes. Love between lovers, love between friends, love among family members.

It is inspired and informed by a real life event.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m currently writing three stories at once. It’s both exciting and frustrating. I just can’t help it. When a plot germinates in my head, it won’t let go until I get up and start writing. My brain keeps churning out these scenes and characters all the time.

I won’t have it any other way, though. That’s just the way I roll.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
In the action and thriller genre, I am influenced by writers who were actual spies and soldiers. So, there’s Frederick Forsyth, Andy McNab, Chris Ryan, Duncan Falconer, among others. I also read a lot of military histories and autobiographies.

In the suspense genre, I am heavily influenced by John Grisham, Brad Thor, Robert Ludlum (of his earliest work), Vince Flynn and a few more I can’t recall at the moment.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on Book Three of Cameron Series, which will feature Maj Ben Cameron, Australian Military Intelligence. The story is against the backdrop of terrorism, with exotic locations such as India and countries in five continents.

Also, working on a drama/romance story called Mosaic. This tackles the subject of rape and child abuse.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
When promoting my books, I use Amazon, Goodreads, Facebook, websites like Freebooksy and Awesomegang, which have been really helpful.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Research, write well, edit, proof-read, repeat. A book is not ready for the readers’ eyes until it’s been through the process at least half a dozen times. I learned this the hard way.

Find a good cover designer.

And, most importantly, don’t let frustration rule.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just do it!

What are you reading now?
At the moment, not reading … too busy with three stories being written concurrently. All I’ve been reading are research materials.

What’s next for you as a writer?
A best-seller listing, that’s for sure. And make enough to buy a new laptop. This one I’m using is about to give up the ghost.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’ll bring a book each of Brad Thor, Frederick Forsyth, Daniel Silva and Chris Ryan.

Awesome Author - Carol Ann King

1016173_10201611336349361_274434501_nTell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
C.A. King was born and raised in Halton County. She currently resides in Ontario, Canada with her two sons.

After the loss of her loving parents and husband, Ms. King was devastated. She decided to retire from the workforce for a year or two to do some soul searching. It was during this time that writing became her passion. She found she was able to redirect her emotions through her writing and in 2014 decided to publish some of her works.

Today her creation, The Portal Prophecies Series comes to life.
Book One, A Keeper’s Destiny, Book Two, A Halloween’s Curse, Book Three, Frost Bitten, Book Four, Sleeping Sands and Book Five, Deadly Perceptions are currently available for purchase. Book Six, Finding Balance is scheduled for release September 2016.

“I need to thank everyone for being so wonderful. It’s amazing when someone reads your work and enjoys the story. I already have people waiting for future books to be released. Is it bad that as a writer I can’t seem to put into words how incredibly wonderful that makes me feel inside?”

Carol Ann King is proud to have her name join the list of Canadian born authors. She hopes her writing will help inspire another generation of Canadians to continue adding to the literary heritage and rich culture Canada already has to offer. Her books in The Portal Prophecies series are fictional fantasy stories based on opening the door to possibilities.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Portal Prophecies: Finding Balance. This is the final novel in the series. (Of course you can expect a spin off or two – wink wink)

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
The best place for me to write is at my father’s desk. He was a lawyer and had a big, old, wooden desk that now resides in my living room. It makes me feel at home to sit and write.

As for routine, I probably need a better one. Once I sit down, there is no stopping me. It’s getting there that can be a problem. I do NaNoWriMo in November every year. That, to me, is major motivation. I find I work best under pressure and with time constraints.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I am an avid day-dreamer. Closing my eyes one day, this world evolved in my mind. I saw the characters, how they moved, how they interacted. Each one came to life. It was a world I wanted to run away to. A place I wished I could live in. I don’t think anyone or anything inspired that, except perhaps my need to escape what life was throwing at me.

Don’t get me wrong, I love reading and have my list of favorite authors, but I keep that separate from my own work.

What are you working on now?
Book Six in The Portal Prophecies series is set for release in September 2016.

After that, I have a couple spin off books coming out in 2017, A new Vampire series in 2017, A comedy book and a cookbook I am working on.

You can also find me in person at the following events

August 20th and 21st – Arts Fest (Waterdown Ontario)
August 26th – 28th Fan World Niagara (Niagara Falls, Ontario)
September 1st – 4th Fan Expo ( Toronto, Ontario)
September 11th – Hamilton PPD (Hamilton, Ontario)
September 17th – Ignite Your Soul Author Event (London, Ontario)
September 25th – Word on the Street (Toronto, Ontario)
October 1st and 2nd – Hamilton Comic Con (Hamilton, Ontario)
Weekends in October – Bizarro’s Factory of Fear (Hamilton, Ontario)
March 17th-19th 2017 – Toronto Comic Con (Toronto, Ontario)

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Try it all, then pick what works best for you!

Have you ever wondered why there is so little information on what works in book marketing? The answer is simple, different things work for different people.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
One thing everyone should do is join groups! Participate! Make yourself visible! Review other author’s books! Write a blog, especially interviewing other authors. Take time to get to know bloggers, they could one day be the most important people you know.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
In the words of Frank Sinatra:
Regrets, I’ve had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.
I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.
Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.
I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried.
I’ve had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.
To think I did all that;
And may I say – not in a shy way,
“Oh no, oh no not me,
I did it my way”.
For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows –
And did it my way!
Yes, it was my way.

What are you reading now?
Fangs for the Memories by D.R. Perry
The Curious Tale of Gabrielle by Zachary Paul Chopchinski
Nikki Magee by Peter Wendt

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am currently writing a weekly column for Books & Quills Magazine.

I will continue writing books as long is there is at least one person who wants to read them.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Treasure Islands, The Hobbit, & Poisonous Plants & Fungi: An Illustrated Guide
by Marion R. Cooper.
