Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Hollywood, California, and raised on the east side of L.A. I moved to northern California to attend college, and never left, earning my BA and MA degrees from San Francisco State University in Cinema Studies. While teaching and working on a post-graduate degree at U.C. Berkeley, an opportunity came to join the San Francisco Giants new Video Production Department, and I jumped at it. After seven years with the Giants, I returned to teaching, while also working as a private investigator. I am currently teaching Cinema Studies in the Bay Area, while writing. I live in San Francisco with mys wife Rena and have an an adult son, Cole. There are currently 4 books in circulation as part of the Lucky Lucas detective/mystery series. The next book should be released around Christmas 2014.
.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Nola’s Future was released early 2014. All the books in the Lucky Lucas series attempt to provide the reader with a fun reading experience, while also touching on certain social issues. My first idea was that of a young student who falls under the spell of a married college professor and the subsequent difficulty she has when she tries to end the relationship.
A parallel storyline involves Jesse Santos, a San Francisco private investigator, and friend to our main protagonist, Lucky Lucas. Sant0s is wounded in a fatal shootout while trying to apprehend a bail jumper in the beach town of Santa Cruz and that case continues its own spiral down the looking glass when the deceased bail jumper’s brother is released from prison and comes looking for revenge along with his drug addicted female cousin sidekick.
The two dramatic and violent cases explore contemporary issues of abusive relationships and the personal and familial cost of unbridled drug use and addiction.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think i have any unusual habits. Like most writers I know discipline is the key. I try to write everyday, usually in the morning, either quite early before going to work, on during regular morning hours if my schedule allows for that.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I continue to enjoy and admired Elmroe Leonard, find Pete Dexter, Danielle Woodrell, and James Sallis books hard to put down, and thoroughly enjoyed the Robert B. Parker novels. There are so many others whose influence has undoubtedly seeped into my pores…Chandler, Hammett, Cain, and Don Delillo.
What are you working on now?
I am in the editing stages of the 5th novel in the series and hope to have it released by the end of 2014. We’ll see!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a website (markgummere.com), use social media outlets, attend periodic writing conferences and simply try to stay active and engaged with writers and readers. It is the most difficult aspect of the whole writing life.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writers write. Try to enjoy it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write ‘something’ everyday.
What are you reading now?
I am simultaneously reading Elmore Leonard’s Pagan Babies and Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. My mood that day seems to determine which one I pick up first (of course, if I can’t immediately find one, I’ll grab that other…that also works!).
What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to continue writing the Lucky Lucas series novels, and work in a couple short stories as well. I also hope to find the time in 2015 to rework a play from a couple years back titled Baby Blue.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Man…how ’bout 5 choices…
1. Don Delillo’s Underworld (just for the language if nothing else),
2. At least one Elmore Leonard novel,
3. Daniel Woodrell’s Bayou Trilogy
4. A book pf poetry
5. Jim Murray’s The Last of the Best (a collection of articlse written for the L.A. Times on sports figures from Muhammad Ali, to Tiger Woods, to Fernando Valenzuela).
That would do it

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
For most of my adult life I have been a science fiction and thriller writer. I am told that I am known for having a literary writing style, one that encompasses dark themes and complex, paranoid characters. The best known of these are DR. ADDER, THE GLASS HAMMER, and FAREWELL HORIZONTAL. And I have a recent indie publication, the novel THE KINGDOM OF SHADOWS, set in the sinister and glamorous world of the film industry of the Third Reich. At last count, I think I have written over 40 novels and a dozen short stories.
Something totally unexpected by me is that I am credited with the invention of the term “steampunk,” which I guess is true as this was a word I coined in a letter to Locus magazine in 1986 to describe the Victorian-inspired books that were being published in the early and mid 1980s. My most recent print publication is in this subgenre: the novel FIENDISH SCHEMES (Tor, 2013), a sequel to my 1987 Victorian fantasy INFERNAL DEVICES.
But my these days I am concentrating on my new Kim Oh books — a Young Adult Suspense & Thriller series. The first five novels are available now online from Amazon. (“Kim Oh” is my pen name for these books.)
On a personal note, I was born in Los Angeles in 1950, and I currently live with my wife Geri in Ecuador. We love traveling and exploring new locales and cultures so it’s anyone’s guess where we will go next. Also, few people are aware that I am a major ballet fan. My wife and I have been known to show up more than five times in a week during the San Francisco Ballet season. Of course, right now this would be quite a commute.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is KIM OH 5: REAL DANGEROUS FUN, the fifth book in my new thriller series. I’m using the pen name Kim Oh for this new series because these books are really different from the ones I’ve written before — they’re faster, funnier, and with lots more action, but with surprising depths to them as well.
In a lot of ways, my heroine Kim is sort of a psychological self-portrait, even though she’s very different from me as well. She’s an orphan who’s had to figure out the world on her own, and how to make her way in it. Some people betray and abuse her, and some people befriend and help her. She has to risk everything, including her own life, to protect the people she loves.
I’ve discovered that this is how most people view their own lives and struggles — we’re all fighting for what we believe in, and surviving the best we can. I believe that the Kim Oh Thrillers are some of the best books I’ve ever written, and they’re where my heart is right now as a writer, because I feel they connect so well with my readers’ lives. I see myself in her, and so do my readers.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to stand up when I write. It keeps me energized. Also, to help retool my brain, I take frequent breaks to practice on my bass guitar.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The classic science fiction writer Andre Norton, thriller novelist James M. Cain, and mystery writer Gil Brewer.
What are you working on now?
These days, I am working on the sixth installment in the Kim Oh series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have found that the most successful method to promote my indie books is the use of websites that also have an extensive email subscriber list.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write as much as you can and as often as you can. When readers like your work, they want more from you and hate waiting for a new story or installment in a series.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Listen to everybody at least once.
What are you reading now?
These days, I am not reading as much as I have in the past — I am writing.
What’s next for you as a writer?
More Kim Oh. And more Steampunk.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
THE EDINBURGH LECTURES ON MENTAL SCIENCE, by Thomas Troward;
The collected novels of Harrison Ainsworth;
HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN SHORTWAVE TRANSMITTER; and
PRACTICAL SHIP BUILDING

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have appeared in principal acting roles in film, television, and theatre, opposite stars such as Bruce Willis, Rosie O’Donnell, Nathan Lane, Holland Taylor, and Jason Robards. I have written and directed many musical plays for family audiences (toured through Encore Performing Arts of NY, and one published through Eldridge Plays and Musicals). My one-act plays, Infatuation and Neighbor were performed in New York City. Another one-act, Swing, was performed by Stageworks of NY and published in the Marquee Literary Journal. I wrote The Perils of Pauline, available on CDROM (through Prentice Hall Publishers). I received my MFA from Goddard College in Vermont, and MA from SUNY New Paltz. I am currently Head of the Department/Professor at a college in upstate New York. PAPER DOLL (mystery/romance) is my first novel. My upcoming novels include An Infatuation (Dreamspinner Press), Drama Queen, and Nick the Nerd (for children). JoeCosentino.weebly.com.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My mystery/romance novel, PAPER DOLL, is inspired by famous child actors in Hollywood. In the novel, an ex-child star must investigate who attacked her in the past and who is attacking her now. Here is the book cover blurb:
Jana Lane was America’s most famous child star until she was attacked on the studio lot at eighteen years old. Now a thirty-eight-year-old beauty and mother of two living in a mansion in picturesque Hudson Valley, New York, Jana’s flashbacks from her past turn into murder attempts in her present.
The local suspects include Jana’s down-on-his-luck husband with a dislike for living off the fruits of his wife’s young labor, Jana’s sister and male friend (who both have eyes for Jana’s husband), Jana’s show business father, her deranged loyal fan, and Jana’s young Guy Friday who covets her fame and shares an uncanny resemblance to Jana.
Forced to summon up the lost courage she had as a child, Jana visits the California movie studio she once called home. This sends her on a whirlwind of visits with former and current movie studio personnel. It also leads to a romance with the son of her old producer—Rocco Cavoto—the devilishly handsome filmmaker who is planning Jana’s comeback both professionally and personally. With Rocco’s help, Jana uncovers a web of secrets about everyone she loves, including the person who destroyed her past and threatens to snuff out her future.
“Joe Cosentino has utilized his keen knowledge of show business through shrewd celluloid eyes with tight twists, wicked turns, and one stunning surprise after another!”
̶ Jeff Walt, author of “Hex”
“Paper Doll is a delicious concoction of suspense and nostalgia with all the trash of the tabloids and all the style of classic film noir. Romance, glamour, lust, and murder, make a page turning mystery. I can’t wait for the sequel; I can’t wait for the movie!”
̶ Gerald Fierst, storyteller and author of “The Heart of the Wedding”
It is available for purchase at:

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write late at night then do my rewrite the next morning.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Armistead Maupin’s quirky characters, Agatha Christie’s clues and suspects, Greg Herren’s pulsating urgency, and Laura Levine’s humor inspire me.
What are you working on now?
Dreamspinner Press is publishing my novella, AN INFATUATION, in February, 2015. Here is the blurb:
Muscular, sexy, and tantalizing, Mario was Harold’s hero and obsessive infatuation in high school until homophobia separated them. At their ten-year high school reunion, Harold is a teacher, and Mario is a male model. Both men are married: Mario unhappily to a woman, and Harold happily to a man. As the two meet and sparks fly, will Harold reignite the old flame and set his comfortable life ablaze? Joe Cosentino’s humorous, sweet, sexy, and touching novel will delightfully bring you back to your crushes of the past, and passions of the present!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook and Goodreads are my methods of getting out the news.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is to make an outline then deviate from it as the characters come to life. Listen to your characters and write what they say. Always ask, what if…?
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I have been given is to write for two hours every day.
What are you reading now?
I just finished Armistead Maupin’s ninth/last Tales of the City book.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am currently working on a comedy mystery series set in the world of academia. That is something I know about–academia I mean. The book titles are DRAMA QUEEN, DRAMA MUSCLE, and DRAMA CRUISE.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I was stranded on a desert island, I’d want the Tales of the City books.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I like to spice myHistorical Mystery Thriller novels with some humor and irony as I believe this makes my heroine Nicolina Fabiani and her partner in crime David Baron more interesting and believable.
I also have a downright Satirical Crime novel which pokes fun at the very dangerous Eastern European Gangs who have based themselves in London.
I have also crossed genres in the 6 novels I have published to date.
The Magdalene Conspiracy – Historical Mystery Thriller
The Immortal Madonna – Historical Mystery Thriller
Both are a part of the Nicolina Fabiani series
An Obsessive Love – Psychological Romance
From Serbia With Love – Satirical Crime
Her Soul In Peril – a Metaphysical Fantasy about Past Lives
Blood Diamonds Conspiracy – a romantic thriller
The excerpts for these novels can be read on my website www.yvonnecrowe.com
I enjoy every minute of my writing and am passionate about the intensive research I put into each book,as I believe this phase is equally as important as writing it.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest published novel is THE IMMORTAL MADONNA and this was inspired by the success of my first novel The Magdalene Conspiracy; and also the discovery 14 years ago of the amazing Archaeological Site Gobekli Tepe in Turkey. This has turned mankind’s history upside down with the discovery of what is believed to be the World’s first Temple created 16,000 years ago and proving that the prehistoric Mesopatamian civilization was organized and more advanced than we realized.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do not tend to write an outline of a book once an idea pushes its way to the front of my brain where it has been lurking for a while. I find my novels tend to morph as I write them and I prefer to retain a lot of flexibility in developing my story and characters. I sometimes find myself writing the end of the book after a few chapters. The synopsis for the novel I am writing now changed completely within a few weeks of beginning work on it. This in turn changed the slant of my new book and I think it is important to go with the flow and not become too dogmatic about the direction it will take. All becomes clear about one third of the way into the work.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are so many it is difficult to list them as I am a voracious reader across two of the most popular genres, so the choice is astronomical. Here are a few
Daniel Silva
Dan Brown
Kate Moss
Steve Berry
Roger K Ellory
Reggie Nadelson
Khalid Hosseini
Edward Rutherford
Martin Cruz Smith
I could go on and on……but won’t.
What are you working on now?
I am now working on the third book in the Nicolina Fabiani series entitled Hitler’s Dark Shadow.
This book takes Nicolina and David Baron on the quest for David’s Jewish family’s fortune which was confiscated by the Nazis during WWII.
The story encompasses the Nazis’ interest in German Mysticism and particularly the ideology of The Black Sun and the search for The Holy Grail.
An excerpt from this book is available at the end of THE IMMORTAL MADONNA and also on my website www.yvonnecrowe.com
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Through trial and error, I have found it important to use the cross promotional concept to post my books on websites that have raised my profile and make my writing financially rewarding. Needless to say the Awesome Gang has been instrumental here.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write with a passion. Research your subject well. Write, write, write. Proof, proof, proof, edit, edit, edit. Polish your manuscript to a bright shining jewel.
Believe in yourself. Use a good editing tool. Proof and edit your book thoroughly before you release it. If you engage the services of a Digital Publisher who contracts to do this for you, check thoroughly they have done so before your book is published. This is your baby, you created this…..make sure no stone is left unturned in presenting it as perfectly as possible. Think of it as a baby at its christening, polished to perfection for all the world to see.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
One very important piece of advice I was given at the outset was NOT TO READ THE REVIEWS ON MY BOOK. If you are seen to be even moderately successful you will attract negative reviews. Apparently from fans who feel you threaten their icon; as well as the trolls who surf the net trying to ruin author’s reputations.
What are you reading now?
Baghdad Central by Elliott Colla, a novel about a policeman in Iraq pre and post Invasion. It is excellent.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I will continue to produce the Nicolina Fabiani series to a point where I will only write a sequel if I believe I can keep it fresh and interesting. I have become bored with many series written by best selling authors after the 4th or 5th sequel.
I am also writing a novel about a Muslim family who emigrated to New Zealand from Iraq after the invasion.. They are Palestians whose ancestors were driven out of their homeland Palestine, where they had lived for so long they cannot even begin to place their origins. History has repeated itself yet they are the kindest, openhearted and courageous people it has been my privilege to meet and I count them as close friends. I am passionate about Palestine and her peoples and believe the should be granted Statehood.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 months ago and decided against surgery, and chemotherapy and have survived. The tumor has now shrunk from 4 cm to where it cannot be felt. I will be writing a book about this journey in diary form as I want other victims of cancer to have choices other than medical intervention.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
And The Mountains Echoed
A Quiet Belief in Angels
Sarum/Russka
Gorky Park.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Currently, I’m pursuing a PhD in bioengineering, while writing whenever I have the time. I have two books out and two more on the way. They’re all twists the Science Fiction genre, blending biotechnology with thrillers.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Human Forged, my latest book, was inspired by a trip I took to Estonia. Outside the capital city, Tallinn, there’s a prison that was abandoned in 2001. You can explore the prison and almost nothing is off-limits. It’s creepy and frightening and, when I found out the place was a site for impromptu raves, I knew I had to a write a story that started off there.
I didn’t realize that story would take a wild twist and confront the science of cloning but that’s how things go!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I think my writing habits haven’t changed since the last time I interviewed here — I’m still pumping Irish folk music and pub songs as I write!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
David Brin inspired me to take a critical look at Science Fiction and certainly influenced how I incorporate my own research and science experience into my works. Michael Crichton, of course, is another influence; anyone who combines awesome research and the creative application of science in fiction is someone I can get behind and learn from.
What are you working on now?
I’m finishing the final touches on The God Organ. This novel focuses on an artificial organ that is designed to give its users virtual immortality. Instead, patients with the organ start dying.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I think using all the email lists and newsletters, including Awesome Gang, is a huge way to reach a large audience quickly.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you can, get in touch with others who have experience in the indie world. Your best allies and your best sources of advice will be others who have been in the trenches and survived.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep writing. You can edit it later, but keep writing now.
What are you reading now?
I’m just finishing up another indie novel, Reho. It’s a twist on the post-apocalyptic genre.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan on expanding the series I started with Enhancement and The Human Forged. I can’t wait to explore the other stories and characters in this world.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
War and Peace, Frankenstein, and Ulysses.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in New York City, but lived my teen years in South Florida. I now live in Tucson, Arizona. I’m a graduate of Northern Arizona University, in 1974, where I received degrees in writing and American history. I believe we’re not being told the truth about what’s really on Mars, or why probes are purposely avoiding certain areas there. I’m an aerospace enthusiast, and an advocate of the privatization of space exploration.
I am working on my eighth book, a horror story entitled “The Horror on the HMS Cottingly”. My Mars themed book “The Healer” is the first one to be available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Booklocker.com, and others. My next, a fantasy entitled “In The Shadow Of The House Of God”, will be available around the end of the year.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book that is out now is THE HEALER. It was inspired by a life-long fascination with the planet Mars, and a firmly held belief that the government is not telling us the truth of what is really up there; most particularly, the structure known as The Face on Mars. Un-retouched photographs, curiously pixilated features on Mars, and many threatened whistleblowers, all point to a titanic secret, or secrets on that world, that many powerful groups intend to keep secret – at all costs. That is what inspired my book; a work of fiction- yes; but inspired by truths not yet revealed. Technology may change, but Man’s basic fears and irrational intolerance do not. And they will be the same in the 22nd century, as now.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well, I write on hard cover black & white composition books; edit them until they look like I’ve bled all over them – then I transfer the final version into my computer. I thought it primitive and behind the times, until I found out Kurt Vonnegut wrote the same way. So I guess I’m in pretty good company.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Douglas Adams, James Thurber, Thornton Wilder, and of course, my Dad, who was a writer for radio drama just after WW II.
What are you working on now?
A horror novel titled “The Horror on the HMS Cottingly”.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Being the proverbial starving artist, I rely, at least for now, on the social media. I post my book blurb on about 80 Facebook book promotion pages. And I have about 120 book reviews pending, who will publish said review (favorable, I hope!) on their blogs, as well as Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and others. This of course has an exponential effect; exposing THE HEALER to many more people. I’m also enrolled in about half a dozen book promotion services, such as Ask David.com, Whizzbuzz, and Book Viral. More could be done, true, but it’s a learning process, and I’m still learning.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes – persistence! And patience, of course. And it’s important to have a thick skin; something I have to work on every day, and not take negative criticism personally. Writing is a humbling experience, as I found out the hard way. At the risk of sounding conceited, I originally fancied myself the next Ray Bradbury or Hemingway (Not really!). Until I slowly realized that even if I WAS the next Bradbury or Hemingway – there are million of other writers out there who are possibly the next Bradbury or Hemingway, as well. Like I said, writing is a humbling experience. A lesson to be learned for any beginner.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I ever heard- and I wish I could remember where I’d read it- was from a fellow writer, who said beginning writers should first get as many books on their craft as they can, study them–and then toss them in the garbage. Because if you don’t, your books will sound exactly like every other book written. They’ll be textbook perfect – and devoid of flavor or voice. Your voice. Individuality is the hallmark of success. I’m sure many world famous authors broke many writing rules, if you can believe the thousands of “How To” books that come out every year. Thank God they did indeed “march to the beat of a different drummer”.
What are you reading now?
I tend to flit between my favorite authors. I’m like a butterfly, hopping from this one to the next. And I reason that if I’m reading, I’m not writing. But the opposite is also true. I feel guilty if I’m not reading; then when I do, I feel guilty if I’m not writing. Ongoing battle. LOL!
What’s next for you as a writer?
To work on “The Horror on the HMS Cottingly”, and find markets for the 15 short stories I’ve also written, in the genres of science fiction, horror, fantasy, comedy/fantasy, and 1 romance story. Imagine that!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. “What To Do If You’re Stranded On A Desert Island”.
2. A blank composition book to write on. (Palm fronds rip too easily!)
3. The collected works of Douglas Adams.
4. A spiritual book to uplift my spirits.
