Neil Kay

Neil Kay

Interview With Author Neil Kay

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I'm a British teacher living in Yokohama, Japan. I've been here for years now and I'm probably here for good. I started writing in June of 2021 and published my first book in March 2022, the sequel was published in August 2022 and I'm hoping to release book 3 in Feb/March of 2023.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The last book was called Fear the Draugr. My series is historical fiction and horror, the first book is about demons living in the chaos of post-Roman Britain. FtD is book 2 and set in the early Viking age. The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell and the TV adaptation The Last Kingdom were inspirations along with legends about undead creatures from Scandinavian saga literature and folktale.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Probably not that unusual but I never start until after breakfast. I can't write while hungry.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Bernard Cornwell because his historical fiction is full of interesting little details. Outside of my genre I like Zadie Smith as I admire how she can write from the point of view of very different characters with a large degree of empathy.

What are you working on now?
Book 3 in the series. It's untitled but I'm wracking my brains. It's a serial killer hunt with many of the supernatural elements found in books 1 & 2. It's set in York in the aftermath of the Harrying of the North in which the Norman conquerors burnt the north of the country to the ground resulting in a famine.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I'm still trying to find that answer for myself! Reddit and Facebook have been decent for me.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Set a daily word limit and stick to it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best way to market your book is to write a second, then a third, and so on…

What are you reading now?
Manga, where I live it's cheap and an invaluable way to memorize Japanese vocabulary. I've read Kimetsu no Yaiba most recently.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Book 3 out in Feb/March 2023 and hopefully selling enough to replace my PC so I can write book 4 faster!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson.
Shogun by James Clavel
White Teeth by Zadie Smith
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

J. Treacy Cole

J. Treacy Cole

Interview With Author J. Treacy Cole

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am the author of the series Robin Winter's Tales; creator of Chippy and the Pink Balloon (an animated short film); screenwriter of Consumed, Modern Persecution, Helen Hires a Hitman (with Elizabeth Hawes), and Ubiquitous Indignities. I am an online teacher currently living in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I am also a reader of screenplays for a nascent film production company out of Los Angeles. It's exciting to be the one to point producers to a screenplay that might just make a writer see her/his/their idea on the big screen!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent book is actually a screenplay! It's called Ubiquitous Indignities and is a 2022 award winner at Assurdo Film Festival in Italy. It's an animated short about a little pink blob who wishes she was blue–and the lengths she goes to try to become blue. It's based upon growing up in a society that puts so much value on thinness. Though it's animated and a short film, it's most definitely not for children!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am a relatively ordinary writer! I use outlines and colorful notecards. I like to know where I am going. It gives me confidence and allows me to flow without worrying I'll get lost.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The books that most influenced me are those that I read growing up. I didn't have television in the summers, so I became a voracious reader. A huge favorite was Candle in Her Room by Ruth Arthur about a terrifying, evil doll. I also read many series: Boxcar Children, Trixie Beldon, Meg Mysteries, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, etc. I was obsessed with The Harry Potter Series and the author Philippa Gregory. Also, Ursula K. LeGuin and Lois Lowry were and are favorites.

What are you working on now?
Currently I'm working on the production aspects of Ubiquitous Indignities and making Robin Winter's Tales into a limited series that I hope to sell some day!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I put quite a bit of effort into creating my website a few years ago and quite honestly I've abandoned the effort. My website is direct and to the point and you will know what I create by visiting there. I don't regularly update it or write a blog — I'd rather spend the time working on my projects, advertising/posting on Instagram, and connecting with others in the reading/writing/film communities.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I just want to encourage your to go for it! Set aside a time to write. Carve out those times for yourself. Create a space for yourself.

When you think it's time to publish or seek a literary agent, that's when you must find an editor. Don't ever work with someone who tears you apart, but put yourself in a place where you are able to listen without getting defensive. Work together to make your piece a polished one. If you are a genius of some sort perhaps you don't need an editor, but I find I must have one or more outside perspectives. I need fresh eyes to see elements in my writing that I cannot see.

Careful about writing groups. They can be helpful, but I have seen terrible writers give better writers critiques that were unhelpful to say the least. Be sure your groups are competent and encouraging.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
"Kill your darlings." (If you have never heard of it, do google it. It has been attributed to many authors, but it might first have been coined by Arthur Quiller-Couch in 1916.)

What are you reading now?
I am reading an indie author — a wonderful, cute man I met as he was doing a book signing in Barnes & Noble. Harry A Millman, PhD is the author of many books including Forensics: The Science Behind the Deaths of Famous People (which I am reading).

What’s next for you as a writer?
I would like to write the third book in the Robin Winter's Tales series, but I made a promise to myself that I would have to make a profit on the first two books before I self-publish! I have turned my focus more fully on screenwriting and film production for the time being.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would definitely take the book written by Seth via Jane Roberts in the 1970s called The Nature of Personal Reality as I wondered why I would have then chosen at a soul level to get myself stuck on a desert island. I would also take J.K. Rowling's Deathly Hallows, John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, and Ruth Arthur's A Candle in Her Room. Those last three would mean I would have friends with me!

Interview With Author OVWEDE AZIAKPONO

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
had the rare bitter pleasure of being by myself most of my life. So, an introvert is one word to describe me but entirely. In the right crowd, I could be very lively and loud. But in most, I'm silent and just nod to everything said. I've also had the sweet pain of making mistakes. These mistakes have left their ultimate scars. My writing comes mostly from these life scars. I started writing in 2016. I had it coming, they were eventually going to burst out of me. I had two choices, write them down or they come bursting out in ways I can't fathom. I've written one book. T.M Cicinski

T.M Cicinski

Interview With Author T.M Cicinski

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a 36 year old, British-born novelist and short story writer, currently resident in Granada, Spain. From Whence The River's Run is my fifth published work. My other works include another novel, a novella, and two collections of short stories. Over the course of this year, several other works will be added to this list.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest work is "From Whence The Rivers Run." It was inspired by a story I heard long ago about a man who set out to kill the crocodile that had killed his wife. I forget how that story ended, whether it were in success or tragedy, however, it made me think a good deal about the relationship between humanity and nature, and the process of grief, and the result of this pondering was the novel.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am not sure if it is unusual or not, but one of my habits is to write in bars. When I am working on something, in the evenings I often take my notes to one of two or three bars, settle down at a table, and work away with a beer and plate of tapas at my elbow. It is not important to me whether the bar is full or empty. As soon as I am settled to work, no amount of noise or activity around me disturbs me. But I like the feeling of life going on around me. Writing can be a lonely path to walk, yet working in a public place, in proximity to others, that loneliness slips away. The bars I chose have changed over the years, but my most enduring favourites for working are "El Rincón de Lorca" and "Bar Poë", both in Granada.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
To list all of the authors and books that have influenced me would be an impossible task. At different times, different authors and books have been more or less important. However, the most enduring influences I would say have been Hemingway, Camus, Proust, Saint-Exupéry, Tolstoy, and Jack London. Each in their own way achieved what I consider to be perfection in one or more of their works.

What are you working on now?
At the moment, I am working on another literary fiction novel and a collection of stories. Alongside this there is a mountain of projects stacked beside my desk, which I must get round to completing and editing sooner or later.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am inexpert in all such things. However, if I learn, I will let you know.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
You must write for you, for your pleasure, for your own development. Do not write because you want to be published, to be famous, or to be rich. If you do, the chances are that you will spend less time being happy than you will being unhappy. If you write only for yourself, for the joy of the process of writing, and the satisfaction of finishing a work to the standard you hoped for, writing will never be anything other than something that enriches your life.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
"It would be a terrible thing for the end of the world to come and for you to be in credit."

What are you reading now?
I am always reading more than one book at the same time, so that no matter what my mood, I have something that suits it. At the moment I am reading "Siddhartha" by Hermann Hesse, and "Bonjour Tristesse" by Françoise Sagan, both of which I would heartily recommend.

What’s next for you as a writer?
To continue writing everyday, and, hopefully, to continuing growing and improving as a writer.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would take Proust's "In Search of Lost Time," Tolstoy's "War And Peace", and, for something a little lighter but by no means less enjoyable, De Bernières' "Captain Corelli's Mandolin".

Denise Baden

Interview With Author Denise Baden

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I run the Green Stories project and this year I have been working with Herculean Climate Solutions and the Climate Fiction Writer’s League to compile an anthology of climate solutions wrapped in short stories called: No More Fairy Tales: Stories the Save Our Planet. I edited it and contributed several stories..
My day job is Professor of Sustainability at the University of Southampton. I’ve published numerous book chapters and articles in the academic realm, and a eco-themed rom-com Habitat Man (2021), followed by The Assassin in 2022. I set up the series of free Green Stories writing competitions in 2018 to inspire writers to integrate green solutions into their writing (www.greenstories.org.uk).
The interesting thing about such a herculean task to put the world to rights via climate fiction is the divisions it reveals among all those who are striving for the same goal but come from different disciplines. The engineers love the big, bold, audacious solutions, the more impossible the better. ‘Glaciers melting? Well let’s just refreeze them! Nature lovers and ecologists say ‘how about we just stop leave nature alone? And then the social scientists pitch in with ‘what’s the point of all these projects if we’re still consuming as fast as we can in the name of economic growth?’
As editor it’s been a challenge reconciling all these viewpoints. Each story was written by a professional writer and then honed by climate experts. The stories I co-wrote myself as a social scientist, with Steve, a chemical engineer and Martin a comedy writer were an amusing but educational wrangle to determine which aspects got priority.

Judge for yourselves if we got it right.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
No More Fairy Tales: Stories the Save Our Planet was inspired by wanting to showcase what a sustainable society might look like and how we can get there. I wanted stories to be engaging, great to read and inspirational to provide hope.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Kim Stanley Robinson (visionary), Marion Keyes (so funny), David Mitchell (epic and innovative)

What are you working on now?
I'm adapting the novella The Assassin into a full length book. Also working on Habitat Man as a tv series and the sequel.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
my green stories network

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Enjoy the process!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don't try to make the first draft perfect – just get it down.

What are you reading now?
I'm immersing myself in crime fiction as I write the Assassin as a full length novel. Just finished the Guest List by Lucy Foley.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I like experimenting with different formats so am working on writing my stories (Habitat Man and the Assassin) as TV series

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
Doctor Zhivago (as it's long and will keep me going).
Survival skills!

David Craig

David Craig

Interview With Author David Craig

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I'm a US Air Force Veteran, and retired airline pilot. I've written one book so far but have ideas for several more! I was born in California, joined the military, and have lived all over the USA since. I've been an airplane fanatic since I can remember. I love everything to do with anything that flies.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Memoir of an Aviator, My journey from factory worker to airline Captain.

Aviators are not shy about telling stories, and many of my friends have told me, "You should write a book!" So, I did. Once I retired, I needed something to keep my mind active, and writing is the perfect place to recall memories and the people that inspired me.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to work in a quiet corner of my house, but when traveling to see family I can work amid a full cacophony of kids, grandkids, dogs, and associated din.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I've always loved very technical military writers such as Tom Clancy. Historical military novels by W.E.B. Griffin are also my favorite companions. I also like Nelson B. DeMille. Ed McBain is my go-to for pulp fiction, along with John D. MacDonald. Len Deighton for spy thrillers. Alastair McLean. I also like autobiographies of prominent leaders.

What are you working on now?
I'm writing a companion to Memoir of an Aviator, with many more short chapters on interesting events, people, and situations. I'm also compiling a user guide to the Amazon self-publishing process.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I'm a new author, so I am looking for a great way to get some reviews and book sales. At present, I am on Amazon, but am going to branch out to a wider sales theme.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Review your records of events, places, calendars, etc, and think about what happened and who you were with. Sometimes it is helpful to sit quietly and think about friends, places, and events. Your memory will pop up with things you may have not written about yet. Then write down a quick memory jogger of what popped up, or you will forget it!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I've had a lot of good advice over the years. Some of the best was, "If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything." That has been attributed to Mark Twain.

What are you reading now?
I'm finishing the Ed McBain 87th Precinct series. Cops, bad guys, mayhem.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I'm going to be marketing my first book, then working on a companion book of aviation stories.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That's tough! One W.E.B. Griffin novel, likely "The Aviators." One Tom Clancy, "The Hunt for Red October." David Hackworth, "We were Soldiers." Len Deighton, "Bomber."
