Kirsty Kendall

Interview With Author Kirsty Kendall

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I've written my whole life since I was 6 years old. I actually wrote my first "books" at the age of 6! I have published 3 books on Amazon. Two of them are children's books, and one is a children's activity book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Unicorn Vs. Dragon: The Epic Tournament. It's part of a children's book series Hippolyta the Unicorn. The first book, Unicorn Christmas Story: The Secret Ingredient is about Hippolyta and Raina the unicorn saving Christmas. I wanted to introduce a new character. A dragon seemed perfect to me! Hippolyta the unicorn already has a human friend. Surely she would love to befriend a dragon as well.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I'm a night owl and often write at night. I never start writing (or anything, really) until the afternoon.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling, of course. But my favorite book of all is The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. It's the perfect fantasy novel! And the main character is a unicorn.

What are you working on now?
I'm plotting new Hippolyta the Unicorn books. Because I definitely want to write new books for the series. I'm thinking of writing fiction books for adults as well, but they take so much longer to write than children's books!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon ads, but I recommend studying how they work before starting a campaign. I've promoted my Amazon free e-book campaigns with Bknights on Fiverr before. It's a good budget option.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you write a children's book series, learn from my mistake: Don't write a Christmas book first! They only sell during the holiday season. You should publish two non-holiday books first, and then you can write a Christmas book in the same series if you want. That way, you'll have at least two books that sell all year round before your holiday book goes live.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do what you love.

What are you reading now?
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. And a couple of other books too. I have ADHD, and I often have multiple unfinished books I'm reading simultaneously.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I'm working on my WordPress blog which is not related to my books. And plot on new books and hopefully get them published as soon as possible. But before that, I'm marketing my latest book to get sales.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, and the Mammoth trilogy by Stephen Baxter. Maybe that's cheating because it's three books in one.

Interview With Author Claudia Ricci

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I started my writing career as a daily newspaper journalist with the Chicago Sun-Times and The Wall Street Journal. After the birth of my first child, I started writing freelance journalism, personal essays and book reviews for The New York Times, Parents magazine, the Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Sesame Street Parents Magazine, Working Mother, Business Week, Natural History, the Sunday Gazette (Schenectady, NY) and The Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield, MA).

I have published four books: Dreaming Maples (2002), Seeing Red (2011), Sister Mysteries (2018) and my new book due shortly, Pearly Everlasting.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Pearly Everlasting arose out of a vision of a woman hounded by guilt over the accidental death of her daughter. I wrote the book very quickly as the images/scenes presented themselves rapidly.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have a very unusual daily morning practice: just before meditating, I open a two by two inch journal, select a letter of the alphabet and write down all the things that I am grateful for.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Over the years I've been influenced by William Faulkner, especially "The Sound and the Fury," Virginia Woolf, especially "To the Lighthouse," "Mrs. Dalloway" and "Moments of Being;" Willa Cather, especially "Song of the Lark," Barbara Kingsolver, Michael Cunningham, Toni Morrison and Pearl Buck,

What are you working on now?
A work of memoir/fiction about my great grandfather, Pasquale Orzo, who was born to an unwed mother in southern Italy in 1870. In those days, most illegitimate babies in Italy perished so it's a miracle that he survived. I want to write his story, and that of his mother, Filomena Scrivano (scrivano in Italian means scribe.) I want to be the scribe for their very difficult experience. The working title of the book is "Angels Keep Whispering In My Ears."

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Doing readings at local venues, and using social media (Instagram) and my blog (MyStoryLives.blogspot.com) to get the word out.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
"Just Keep Writing." That was the motto my writing friend Peg Woods and I came up with this motto to keep us going. The best book to motivate and inspire is Brenda Ueland's "If You Want to Write." She says "Inspiration comes slowly and

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
When I was a journalist the best advice I ever got was from a senior reporter named Harlan Draeger who told me, "Claudia you have to write 'em and forget 'em," as a way of distancing yourself from what happens to your writing after it's published. In those days, it was wanting to be on the front page of the newspaper. In writing books, it's worrying about how many readers you have. Don't get bogged down with those worries. Just keep writing and getting your work out there to interested readers.

What are you reading now?
"The Oracle of Stamboul," by Michael David Lukas, a wonderful and enchanting tale about a little girl who becomes the adviser to the Sultan in the Ottoman Empire.

What’s next for you as a writer?
As I described before, I have more than enough challenge with the new book I'm working on, "Angels Keep Whispering in My Ears." I am also a painter and I spend a lot of time painting! I became a painter after writing Dreaming Maples, in which the main character was a painter.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, The Koran, "The Buddha's Guide to Gratitude," by Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, "Gratefulness: The Heart of Prayer," by Brother David Steindl-Rast and "The Tripitaka," the sacred texts of Buddhism.

Mary Leah Howard

Interview With Author Mary Leah Howard

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live on Vancouver Island and have written ten books. I am currently developing a style of book I call "commentaries". These books are intended to be casual commentaries on a particular subject that is researched by the author. They aren't meant to be expert opinions, rather personal views. I was inspired to do this by reading intelligent "comments" online that often have interesting insights and criticisms. Although these comments are not official views, they are real perceptions made by real people, and this to me is a valuable view.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
"The Father of Jesus: A commentary on who the biological father of Jesus might have been." I was inspired to write this book because it is one of the greatest mysteries of the past that has never been revealed.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write from the view of an ordinary person living in the World trying to make sense of what is known. I am a UX designer who uses "reality" to uncover secrets.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite author from days gone by is Ayn Rand. During her day, she was perceived as somewhat of a radical writer who discussed political views in a way that no one else had previously done. Her book "Atlas Shrugged" portrays a utopian society where individuals can develop their own abilities which, even in this day, is often a challenge to do.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I am working on promoting "The Father of Jesus" and trying to find readers who will enjoy the book for what it is: a personal interpretation of facts and events.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I recently discovered the website Kindlepreneur that is run by Dave Chesson. I took his course on doing Amazon Ads and have been reading articles on promoting books. Not only have I learned things I never knew before, I feel more motivated to telling others about my book. Thank you, Dave for caring about writers!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
"Do your own thing!" I have learned that when I do things they way I want or enjoy, I usually produce a better quality book.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never quit! If you fail at one project, start another. Many times I have heard many writers tell newbies that it is important to keep on writing and not let failure stand in your way.

What are you reading now?
I am reading "The Lost Island" by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I enjoy the books these two authors write because I always learn something about archaeology (my favorite subject) and hidden secrets (my other favorite subject).

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am planning to write another commentary but have not chosen the subject yet.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The English Dictionary
A book of crossword puzzles
A sketch pad and some pencil crayons
