Interview With Author Brenda Mahler

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Professionally
I co-authored an Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development publication (Strategies for Teaching Writing: An ASCD Action Tool, 2000), earned National Board Certification and a master’s degree in education. Teaching writing has always been my passion and watching youth explore the power of language is amazing.

Since retiring, I have started writing on Medium and Vocal Media to share essays of personal experiences and memoirs. I post regularly to publications on the topics of travel, self-improvement, writing strategies, and parenting.

Three books are available to readers on Amazon.

Lockers Speak : Voices from America's Youth
Live a Satisfying Life By Doing it Doggy Style
Understanding the Power of Not Yet: Accepting the Challenges of New Beginnings

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Understanding the Power of Not Yet: Accepting the Challenges of New Beginnings

When my 33-year-old daughter had a stroke, life and priorities changed. As I sat beside her bed first in the hospital and then in a rehabilitations center, writing became my coping mechanism. As she improved, my notes began to form into stories and eventually became a book to inspire others.

Act one begins when Kari wakes in a hospital bed surrounded by family and continues through rehabilitation. When she returns home, act two illustrates the power of hope determination, and overcoming the odds. Her experiences and the events of those around her offer encouragement for stroke victims and their support systems by revealing survival strategies that help manage the unknown.

Kari demonstrates how to be the director of her own drama one day at a time. The lessons learned teach the value of community, family, and love. It is a testament that our role is not to watch life happen but to make it happen. Some of life’s worst experiences provide reminders to remain faithful. Faithful to self, beliefs, and loved ones. People who confront struggles with resolve, purpose, and willpower are my heroes. They have grit.

Kari continues making gains. Each day reminds us, this is a marathon with short-term successes. Though obstacles sometimes slow her journey to recovery, no barriers stop her progression. Her actions exhibit determination. Kari doesn’t talk in terms of what she can accomplish, will achieve, or desires to complete; she simply lives life. She doesn’t complain or exclaim, “I can’t.” She says, “Not yet.” I fall asleep each night expectant to witness the next day’s accomplishments.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Since retiring as an English teacher, I write most mornings with a cup of coffee and am blessed to have a husband who usually keeps my cup full and the liquid warm. Since we travel a lot in our motorhome, I often am juggling our two Yorkshire Terriers and a laptop in the passenger's seat.

Before retirement, writing occurred during stolen moments of time between required tasks. Those notes provide inspiration for short stories, poems, essays, and memoirs. Writing is a reflection of life.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
At the risk of becoming a cliche and exposing my geekiness, I proclaim Mark Twain, Maya Angelou, and Harper Lee to be my literary role models. However, for escape I crave Janet Evanovich or any author who pulls on my heartstrings and offers an adventure. Jenny Lawson's blog is my go-to when I need a touch of honesty and humor to help survive reality.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I am working on a new concept that is a cross between an urban dictionary and a collection of humorous pet stories. It provides readers with definitions of new words from the viewpoint of dogs by sharing the animals' interpretations.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far marketing my books to specific audiences that connect with the topics has been most successful. For instance, my latest book about my daughter's stroke recovery has been well received by other stroke survivors on Facebook.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write daily even if the words are only chicken scratches on the back of receipts or notes on a phone. Collect ideas for when more time can be allotted to release the creativity and let it flow unrestricted.

After teaching writing for years, I also encourage writers to identify a writing process that works for them. They should read about writing and then adopt the strategies that support their style, interests and skills.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never give up. It takes a while to develop a voice, identify the audience, define a purpose, and organize material into a coherent, final product. Give yourself time.

What are you reading now?
Sarah Maas' A Court of Thorns and Roses Series. Loving it!

What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing is a reflection of who I am, what I am doing, and where I am going. Since I am deciding what to do in this new chapter of my life, I am waiting for directions from fate.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Atlas Shrugged by Ayan Rand
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Bible

With these three there would never be a boring moment.

Elizabeth Holland

Elizabeth Holland

Interview With Author Elizabeth Holland

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I write predominantly romance novels, but also have a couple of short stories focused on mental health. For me, reading is a chance to escape my thoughts and feelings and lose myself in a new world. I try to bring this into my own writing and provide the opportunity for the reader to escape their everyday worries.

The Cornish Vintage Dress Shop is an example of me writing something idyllic for the reader to escape to.

In contrast, my short story, Behind Closed Doors, focuses on a number of different mental health struggles. It's a brutally honest account of what everyday looks like when you're battling your mental health.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book releases on 12th November and it's called A Merry Christmas at the Castle. It follows Eve Merry as she leaves her life in London behind to cook in a castle over the festive season. However, she soon realises cooking in a castle is demanding – especially when the chef has lied on her CV! With a brooding Scotsman to contend with, this Xmas is going to be one to forget.

I love Christmas and for me, there's nothing better than curling up with a festive romance. This book is a pure indulgence of everything I love at Christmas.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn't say I'm unusual, but I would say I'm quite disciplined. I try to write at least a few words each day. Some days I'm not feeling it and I know there's no point in pushing it. When the creativity hits, I more than make up for those slow days.

What are you working on now?
I'm trying to have a little break, but two stories are fighting to put on paper. I have one manuscript I'd like to re-write, which will fit into my vintage series. There's also a new story idea bouncing around my head, which would fit into a new series stemming from A Merry Christmas at the Castle. I'll have to see which one wins the fight as to what I write next!

What are you reading now?
I've released two books in two months so now I'm having a relax and enjoying spending my free time reading! Right now I'm halfway through The Locket: Magician's Prophecy by Rachel L. Tilley and am loving it. Romance is my go-to genre, but the self-published world is filled with too many good books to limit myself to just one genre! I have lots on my TBR list that I'm looking forward to reading over the coming months.

J. D. Brown

J. D. Brown

Interview With Author J. D. Brown

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I began seriously pursuing writing after I attended my first writing conference. I have a passion for helping new writers find their confidence and voice. I write religious themed nonfiction and fiction and am working on my first fantasy novel. After publishing six books traditionally, I'm now stepping into the world of self-publishing. Currently I'm also fulfilling a life goal of getting a Master's degree in English where I've discovered a passion for many of the classic literary authors. I live with my husband and two children. I have no pets but have started a rather complicated relationship with houseplants. The results of that endeavor are still pending.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Break. It's the second in my Inspired by Faith series. The main character, Preston, was introduced in the first book as the romantic interest. I wanted to share more about him and what was going on his life. He's a quiet character who actually has a lot to say, he just has a hard time talking. I was also inspired by my own struggles with processing loss and dealing with mental health. Preston has to do both in this book.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have a tendency to write large segments of my novels in a single sitting. I'm not as good about writing in short spurts and coming back each day. If I get into the book, I just keep writing. Break's first draft was finished overnight because I just kept writing.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Carol Lynch Williams
This Quiet Sky by Joanne Bischof
Marilynn Robinson
Peace Like a River by Leif Enger
Lisa Wingate
Sarah Eden

What are you working on now?
I'm working on a prequel novel to the Inspired by Faith Series. It's called Jump and takes us back in time to the early 90s to follow the story of Preston's mom, Natalie, as a fifteen-year-old. When Natalie's father leaves her home alone for the summer, she decides to take a bus to her grandpa's house. But if her grandpa finds out the truth about her visit, she might loose her dad forever.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My blog and Facebook.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get through the first draft. Don't stop to fix all the errors or worry about getting that one sentence right. Move on and finish the draft. Editing is for later.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Figure out why you write and remember that when things aren't going perfectly.

What are you reading now?
Life to the Whole Being: the Spiritual Memoir of a Literary Professor by Matthew Wickman
Home by Marilynn Robinson
Chocolate Centered Cozy Mysteries Box Set by Cindy Bell
All Hallows' Eve Collection (A Timeless Romance Anthology Book 13)

What’s next for you as a writer?
I'm hoping to self-publish Jump in the next year. I'm also writing a dragon series for fun and thinking about a nonfiction book I may write under a different pen name.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Can I take three or four book sized notebooks? So I can write my own books for entertainment?

R. W. Hert

R. W. Hert

Interview With Author R. W. Hert

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This question always makes me freeze. Tell me I'm not the only one. Just an open ended "tell me about yourself" and static rushes through my brain and I end up staring stupidly at whoever asked it.
Now ask me what I love to read and I can go on for hours.
Why don't we start with that? I LOVE Fantasy. Especially dragons! Give me a dragon book and I will happily disappear into it. I used to dream about having a dragon. Unfortunately, the closest I've been able to get is to write them into my books, and make those books as alive as possible.

I think books should transport you. I mean who doesn't want to go flying through the clouds, or swimming with the mermaids and get so involved with the words that you actually feel like you're there. When I think of good books, that's what it does for me, and that's what I try to make happen with the books I write.

Action! Action is a must. In books and in life, I want something to be happening which is probably why I daylight as a mom of 8 kids (4 of which were adopted through foster care, and let me tell you, if you're looking for a crazy rollercoaster that is definitely one.)

I also like to get to know people. I want to understand them, and see where they're coming from. Connection is key.

As for how many books I've written it's not so easy. I have written over 25 novels, most of which will never see the light of day. I have 4 published or coming soon, and a novella also coming out soon.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Demon King which is the fourth book in the Daemarkin series. I first got the inspiration for writing this series while watching Naruto with my husband. I found Gara fascinating and started forming this idea for a human boy who had a demon trapped inside him. At first I just put him up on a snowy mountain all alone in my brain, but over time he became the lone protector of a village that didn't even like him. The series evolved from there, taking Zade on many adventures.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I'm writing my family is always asking what is wrong, or why I'm making that face because I mimic the expression of my characters as I'm writing it. My kids think it's hilarious.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite book as a kid was Dragon's Milk by Susan Fletcher. I read that book so many times the spine started breaking. One of those times I remember one part being so vivid and real that I couldn't wait to read it again. The next time through I was reading and getting very excited that this part was coming up, and then it wasn't there. That entire section didn't even exist. It took me some time to come to terms with the fact that I must have dreamed it.
It was at that point that I decided if I could dream something so amazing up in relation to someone else's story, I should start writing my own.

What are you working on now?
Currently I'm working on the 5th and final book of the Daemarkin series, the novella, and getting the 4th book through the editing process so it can head to publication.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Ads

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Enjoy what you do, but if you want to succeed make sure you treat it like a business.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Take one day at a time.

What are you reading now?
Alveria Dragon Akademy boxset

What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I finish my Daemarkin series I'm going to work on a new series where two people who hate each other are matched together for life by an oracle. It should be fun.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. Several blank reams of paper so I can write my own.
2. A survival guide
3. A dragon boxset book
